- ANAHEIM, Calif. (KABC) — Disneyland employee unions are asking the state to delay the park’s expected reopening in July out of concerns for health and safety.
- The reopening is planned in phases, with Downtown Disney opening on July 9 and the theme park throwing open its gates on July 17.
- The Coalition of Resort Labor Unions, about a dozen labor groups representing some 17,000 workers, wrote to Gov. Gavin Newsom asking for a delay in reopening.
- “Unfortunately, despite intensive talks with the company, we are not yet convinced that it is safe to reopen the parks on Disney’s rapid timetable,” the coalition wrote.
- The group praised Disney for some measures, such as paying workers salary and benefits for a time after the closure, and for coming up with plans to take the temperature of workers as they enter the workplace. But it also said some issues remain unresolved, such as plans for testing.
- Disney has released a detailed plan to protect the health of workers as well as park guests.
- According to Disneyland’s website, these enhanced health and safety measures include:
- Mandatory face coverings for both cast members and guests
- The addition of hand-washing stations and physical barriers throughout the resort, where appropriate
- Reduced theme park capacity to ensure physical distancing
- Appropriate signs added to help guests move throughout the resort
- Temperature checks for guests prior to entering the theme parks, Downtown Disney District
- Daily health screenings and temperature checks for cast members
- Expansion of Mobile Order through the Disneyland app, Apple pay and more
- Enhanced cleaning and sanitation throughout the resort

- Walt Disney World Resort has officially canceled all Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party for 2020.
- Below is the official update from Disney Parks Blog:
- “While assessing another fall special event, Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, we determined that many of its hallmarks –stage shows, parades and fireworks – are unable to take place in this new, unprecedented environment. With that in mind, we have made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. Additionally, Disney H2O Glow Nights, the nighttime special ticket event at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon, will not take place for the remainder of 2020. Guests who have already bought tickets to these events will be assisted with refunds over the coming weeks.”
- Keep in mind that if you already purchased a ticket to Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party for one of the originally scheduled dates in 2020, you will be able to get a refund. The announcement above also states that Disney H2O Glow Nights at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon will also be canceled for 2020, and refunds will be available for those event tickets as well. Disney stated that they will be providing Guests with more information over the coming weeks.
- Guests have been wondering about whether the Halloween event will take place in Magic Kingdom this year for some time ever since Walt Disney World Resort announced that certain experiences would be modified when the theme parks reopen. We know that fireworks and parades won’t be available when Magic Kingdom opens on July 11, and character meet and greets will also not take place in the traditional way that Guests are used to. Because the Halloween party was scheduled to begin in August and run through October, it is not surprising to many for Disney to make the decision to ultimately cancel all Halloween parties in 2020.
- Disney also announced changes coming to the 2020 EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival, as well as what Guests can expect for Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party at Magic Kingdom this year.
- The EPCOT International Food and Wine Festival typically takes place during the fall months, but for 2020 Disney is debuting the popular event early! In fact — It will begin in July of 2020 when the Walt Disney World Resort begins to reopen its theme parks.
- One staple of the fall season at the Walt Disney World Resort is the annual EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival. Today, we’re pleased to share that not only have we cooked up a creative, modified festival experience, it will also be our longest festival yet – giving you plenty of time to enjoy “A Taste of EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival!”
- This new take on the foodie festival will debut July 15 and continue through the fall, offering over 20 signature global marketplaces like Hawaii, Hops & Barley, and Islands of the Caribbean, spaced out around the park. And, if you’ve ever imagined a world where the floral fun of Flower & Garden is sprinkled in with the global goodies of Food & Wine, here’s your chance – guests will be able to see our newest topiary, Remy, in the France pavilion and find Flower & Garden merchandise. For scavenger hunt fans, Remy’s Ratatouille Hide and Squeak scavenger hunt returns. And stay tuned as Food & Wine merchandise joins the fun later on after the festival begins.
- We know the popular musical acts during the “Eat to the Beat Concert Series” often pack the house and, in an effort to accommodate proper physical distancing, we will not be able to host these concerts this year. There will be plenty of music to enjoy at America Gardens Theatre with local EPCOT entertainment such as Mariachi Cobre, the JAMMitors and more. These fan favorites will spread out their performances throughout the day, giving audiences more options to enjoy them.

- Walt Disney World is testing new security scanner technology with guests at Disney Springs today. This new contact-less body scanner, powered by Evolv Technology, is said to screen guests quickly and safely. If implemented at the Disney Parks, the technology could help drastically decrease wait times at theme park checkpoints. Guests would no longer have to open all their bags to Disney security officers.
- Evolv Technology states these new scanners can check over 3,600 people per hour. Visitors can walk through side-by-side or in groups. The scanners are made to detect guns and other types of weapons. And the system is made to display where the potential threat is on a person’s body or in their bag to security members in real time.
- Today, we saw a Disney security cast member watching a tablet while guests passed through.
- The system is made to be smart enough to distinguish personal items, such as phones and wallets, as non-threats.
- The Evolv Express scanner can even check the temperature of guests as they walk through. Visitors can be screened for elevated skin temperature and weapons at once. This all-in-one system seems to be a no-brainer for Disney as a way to do security and temperature checks all at once. And, this quicker system would help to drastically lower wait times at security checkpoints. It could also eliminate the possible passing of any viruses from bag to bag or Disney security offers to guests and their belongings.

- We have a bad feeling about this.
- The organizers of Star Wars Celebration 2020 have taken to the event’s official Twitter account with a bummer of a message for fans: this year’s Celebration, which was slated to take place this August in Anaheim, California, has been canceled.
- We’ll give you three guesses as to the reason for the cancellation, and the first two don’t count. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to wreak varying amounts of havoc all over the U.S. and the world, festival organizers, concert promoters, and movie exhibitors have all been left with some extra-tough decisions to make. The vast majority of events which involve the gathering of large groups of people in enclosed spaces, presenting the ideal conditions for the novel coronavirus which causes COVID-19 to spread, have been shuffled off until late this year or early next. As Star Wars Celebration is not a yearly event, but takes place roughly every two years, the cancellation means that fans won’t be able to gather to share their love of the galaxy far, far away until 2022.
- Organizers broke the news to fans with a tweet. “At Star Wars Celebration, the health and safety of our fans, attendees, exhibitors, guests, and staff is always our number one priority,” it read in part. “Due to the global impact of the COVID-19 virus and in speaking with local and state authorities on the latest public health guidelines related to indoor conventions, we have made the decision to cancel Star Wars Celebration for 2020. While this news is disappointing, we are happy to announce that Star Wars Celebration will return to the Anaheim Convention Center on August 18-21, 2022.”

- Kylo Ren turned to the dark side after waking up one night during his training to find mentor Luke Skywalker thinking of killing him. But what if his anger started developing long before that?
- Lev Grossman author of “The Magicians” is sharing outtakes from his 2019 Vanity Fair preview of “The Rise of Skywalker”
- Grossman spoke to the entire cast for the article revealed this week that he left out something big: Adam Driver’s backstory for Kylo Ren.
- “I think probably the thing that was missing for me, I wanted to see more about Kylo’s childhood,” Grossman said of the latest “Star Wars” trilogy. ”I thought they would go back to show us more about why he turned to the dark side.
- [Adam Driver] had a lot of interesting thoughts about Ben Solo’s childhood.”
- “This is actually something Adam Driver said,” Grossman continued. “He said that both Han Solo and Leia were way too self-absorbed and into this idea of themselves as heroes to really be attentive parents in the way a young and tender Kylo Ren really needed. There wasn’t really that much of it in the movie so I just think we have to assume his childhood sucked.”

- Oscars Pushed Back to April 25, Eligibility Window Extended

- As a result of the global pandemic, the 93rd Academy Awards ceremony has been pushed back from Feb. 28 to April 25, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and its Oscars broadcasting partner ABC announced on Monday. In turn, the Oscars eligibility period for feature films — which began on Jan. 1, 2020, and was set to expire at the end of Dec. 31, 2020 — has been extended to Feb. 28, 2021. The Hollywood Reporter exclusively reported on Sunday that this was set to happen.
- While highly unusual, these moves are not unprecedented. The Oscars has been delayed three times before — due to L.A. flooding in 1938; following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968; and after the attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan in 1981. And, as I noted back in March, the Oscars eligibility window was extended beyond the traditional 12-month period once before, ahead of the sixth Oscars. (That ceremony, in March 1934, was preceded by a 17-month eligibility window spanning Aug. 1, 1932, through Dec. 31, 1933, so that thereafter the eligibility period could be the actual calendar year preceding each ceremony, Jan. 1 through Dec. 31.)
- In a statement, the Academy indicated that the Oscars will still be held “at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood” and “will air live on ABC,” an apparent rejection of the possibility of a pre-taped and/or virtual gathering. And the Academy emphasized, “The intent going forward is to ultimately return to awarding excellence for films released in the January-December calendar year.”
- A number of other major changes were also announced.
- The Oscar submission deadline for general entry categories — among them best picture, original score and original song — is now Jan. 15, 2021. The submission deadline for specialty categories — best animated feature, documentary feature, international feature, animated short, documentary short and live-action short — is now Dec. 1, 2020. Oscar shortlist voting will now run from Feb. 1 through Feb. 5; nomination voting will now run from March 5 through March 10 (nominations will be announced on March 15); and final voting will now run from April 15 through April 20.
- And the Academy’s Scientific and Technical Awards presentation, which was scheduled for a June 20, 2020 ceremony in Beverly Hills, has been postponed to a later date still to be determined.
- Additionally, the Academy also announced two key dates pertaining to its long-gestating Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, which was previously expected to open on Dec. 14, 2020. It will now be unveiled to a select audience at a gala event a few days ahead of the Oscars, on April 17, and will open to the public a few days after the Oscars, on April 30.
- “For over a century, movies have played an important role in comforting, inspiring and entertaining us during the darkest of times,” Academy president David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson said in a statement. “They certainly have this year. Our hope, in extending the eligibility period and our Awards date, is to provide the flexibility filmmakers need to finish and release their films without being penalized for something beyond anyone’s control. This coming Oscars and the opening of our new museum will mark an historic moment, gathering movie fans around the world to unite through cinema.”
- Karey Burke, ABC Entertainment’s president, added, “We find ourselves in uncharted territory this year and will continue to work with our partners at the Academy to ensure next year’s show is a safe and celebratory event that also captures the excitement of the opening of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.”

- San Diego Comic-Con Virtual Convention To Be Free; Set For July 22

- San Diego Comic-Con has revealed its plans for Comic-Con@Home, announcing free and unlimited attendance for the virtual convention which is now set to take place July 22-26.
- Earlier this year, San Diego Comic-Con was officially canceled due to the Coronavirus pandemic. A virtual version of the convention was announced shortly after to fill the void left by the popular annual event. San Diego Comic-Con has now announced its plans for its first-ever virtual convention, which will be free for all with unlimited attendance.
- “For the first time in our 50-year history, we are happy to welcome virtually anyone from around the globe,” said SDCC spokesperson David Glanzer. “Though stay-at-home conditions makes this a very difficult time, we see this as an opportunity to spread some joy and strengthen our sense of community.”
- While San Diego Comic Convention will not be hosting the pop culture convention as it has traditionally for the last 51 years, the Comic-Con@Home initiative will still feature aspects of the traditional convention such as an online Exhibit Hall offering promotions, specials, and limited-edition products.
- In addition, Comic-Con@Home will also be host to exclusive panels and presentations related to comics, gaming, television, film that the convention has become known for. But that’s not all as Comic-Con@Home will also have a Masquerade, gaming, and other activities for attendees to participate in.
- Comic-Con@Home is officially set for July 22-26. While attendance is free, San Diego Comic-Con will provide badges for fans to print out and wear as they log in for the virtual convention.
- As of now, San Diego Comic-Con will return for its traditional in-person convention on July 22, 2021. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on San Diego Comic-Con and Comic-Con@Home as we learn it and be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content in the future!

- The Great Debate
- Syfy Wire

- Syfy Wire’s The Great Debate is a televised version of the debate panels Syfy Wire would present at Comic-Con and other conventions, pitting four very funny people against each other as they debate various pop culture items to see who comes out “the winner.” Host Baron Vaughn and his trusty computer DB8 determine the “winner” of each debate, and then pick two people to do the big debate at the end. But it’s all really just a chance for five funny people to goof around for 22 minutes (actually more, since longer versions of the debates are shown online).
- The panel in episode 1 — Orlando Jones, Adam Savage, Jonah Ray and Amber Nash — take on nostalgia. Vaughn first asks the panel to defend an old, tired, obsolete gadget that should make a comeback. Jones argues for the brick cell phone from the ’80s, Savage argues for the Palm Pilot, Nash argues for the LaserDisc, and Ray argues for the Zune. Then the panel does head-to-head debates about topics like KITT vs. Battle Cat and what old thing you secretly loved is kinda lame.
- In the third round, Jones and Ray go back to do scenes in front of a green screen; Ray protests against Duck Hunt, and Jones has to pretend he’s a sportscaster during the Teen Wolf basketball games. Nash and Savage debate ’80s balls; Savage talks about how he was “stoner-adjacent”, so he knows the attraction of the hacky sack, while Nash talks about the Koosh, even though she only learned what the rubber-strand ball was called right before the show.
- Finally, Ray and Jones are chosen for the final debate: Who is the greater sensei: Yoda or Mr. Miyagi?

0:03:29.750,0:03:35.330
should be interesting and then we will
0:03:32.210,0:03:36.080
wrap up with our insightful picks of the
0:03:35.330,0:03:47.180
week
0:03:36.080,0:03:49.910
are we ready let’s do this all righty go
0:03:47.180,0:03:53.300
for Disney detective so Disneyland
0:03:49.910,0:03:55.790
employees unions are asking the state to
0:03:53.300,0:03:57.740
delay the parks expected reopening in
0:03:55.790,0:04:01.190
July out of concerns for health and
0:03:57.740,0:04:03.590
safety so the reopening is planned in
0:04:01.190,0:04:06.709
phases with Downtown Disney opening on
0:04:03.590,0:04:10.130
July 9th and the theme parks starting to
0:04:06.709,0:04:12.650
open its gates on July 17th so the
0:04:10.130,0:04:15.020
Coalition of resort labor unions which
0:04:12.650,0:04:18.410
is about a dozen different labor groups
0:04:15.020,0:04:20.720
representing some 17,000 workers wrote
0:04:18.410,0:04:23.660
to the governor asking for a delay in
0:04:20.720,0:04:25.850
the reopening they basically said
0:04:23.660,0:04:27.620
unfortunately despite extensive talks
0:04:25.850,0:04:30.260
with the company we are not yet
0:04:27.620,0:04:33.500
convinced that it is safe to reopen the
0:04:30.260,0:04:35.690
parks on Disney’s rapid timeline so the
0:04:33.500,0:04:37.550
group did praised Disney for some of its
0:04:35.690,0:04:40.910
measures such as paying the workers
0:04:37.550,0:04:43.280
salary and benefits for a time after the
0:04:40.910,0:04:45.830
closure and for coming up with plans to
0:04:43.280,0:04:48.440
take the temperature of workers as they
0:04:45.830,0:04:50.900
are entering the workplace but they also
0:04:48.440,0:04:52.910
feel that there are some issues that are
0:04:50.900,0:04:55.669
still unresolved such as plans for
0:04:52.910,0:04:57.980
testing so Disney had released a
0:04:55.669,0:05:00.470
detailed plan to protect the health of
0:04:57.980,0:05:02.840
the workers as well as the park guests
0:05:00.470,0:05:05.000
and according to the Disneyland website
0:05:02.840,0:05:06.919
you know basically the same measures
0:05:05.000,0:05:08.840
that we’ve been hearing about is the
0:05:06.919,0:05:10.810
mandatory face coverings for cast
0:05:08.840,0:05:13.000
members and gas
0:05:10.810,0:05:15.130
the addition of hand-washing stations
0:05:13.000,0:05:17.889
and physical barriers throughout the
0:05:15.130,0:05:21.070
resort where appropriate reduced
0:05:17.889,0:05:24.400
capacity to ensure the physical
0:05:21.070,0:05:26.490
distancing appropriate signs added to
0:05:24.400,0:05:29.229
help guests move through the resort
0:05:26.490,0:05:31.270
temperature checks for guests prior to
0:05:29.229,0:05:34.389
entering the theme parks in the Downtown
0:05:31.270,0:05:37.000
Disney district daily health screenings
0:05:34.389,0:05:39.669
and temperature checks for cast members
0:05:37.000,0:05:43.000
the expansion of mobile ordering
0:05:39.669,0:05:46.210
throughout the Disneyland app using
0:05:43.000,0:05:48.160
Apple pay and and other options and then
0:05:46.210,0:05:51.040
the enhanced cleaning and sanitation
0:05:48.160,0:05:53.790
throughout the resort so as of right now
0:05:51.040,0:05:56.979
they haven’t delayed any of the opening
0:05:53.790,0:06:00.910
they’ve obviously placed their concern
0:05:56.979,0:06:03.820
for it but you know they’re still going
0:06:00.910,0:06:04.720
you know going on as planned at this
0:06:03.820,0:06:07.780
point in time
0:06:04.720,0:06:09.310
so are they citing specific concerns
0:06:07.780,0:06:11.350
that they have about these measures
0:06:09.310,0:06:12.039
because I think there’s some pretty
0:06:11.350,0:06:15.130
extensive
0:06:12.039,0:06:17.620
it’s really more with with the testing
0:06:15.130,0:06:21.910
of employees I think that’s kind of
0:06:17.620,0:06:23.680
where you know where they they didn’t
0:06:21.910,0:06:26.770
say anything about you know we’re gonna
0:06:23.680,0:06:29.770
offer testing and maybe that’s that one
0:06:26.770,0:06:32.229
you know gray area you know is this
0:06:29.770,0:06:35.289
that’s out there is this testing for
0:06:32.229,0:06:36.970
kovat or Fork Ovid antibodies because I
0:06:35.289,0:06:38.979
know the two different tasks one’s much
0:06:36.970,0:06:41.200
more available right yeah there’s
0:06:38.979,0:06:43.360
nothing the article didn’t didn’t
0:06:41.200,0:06:46.210
mention you know and it and again it
0:06:43.360,0:06:50.200
Disney didn’t come out and say no we’re
0:06:46.210,0:06:52.780
gonna you know halt anything so as of
0:06:50.200,0:06:56.410
right now everything is you know still
0:06:52.780,0:06:59.410
ago now how important or how involved I
0:06:56.410,0:07:02.919
guess are the unions and up in Anaheim
0:06:59.410,0:07:06.729
is everything at Disney unionized well
0:07:02.919,0:07:09.700
you figure it’s 17,000 workers you know
0:07:06.729,0:07:13.120
total are covered so I’m sure there’s
0:07:09.700,0:07:16.229
probably a number of but that’s among
0:07:13.120,0:07:21.099
all theme parks out there though right
0:07:16.229,0:07:23.860
yes so I’m guessing you know depending
0:07:21.099,0:07:26.860
on your level you know of employee
0:07:23.860,0:07:28.810
with the parkour what you do right yeah
0:07:26.860,0:07:32.800
I just think it’s just interesting
0:07:28.810,0:07:35.319
because we’ve not heard a lot from from
0:07:32.800,0:07:37.419
unionized workers for Disney in the
0:07:35.319,0:07:40.360
United States usually we’ve seen this
0:07:37.419,0:07:43.870
over right we saw this in France with
0:07:40.360,0:07:46.030
everything that we up there right so
0:07:43.870,0:07:49.150
interesting yeah we’ll see if it
0:07:46.030,0:07:51.990
actually holds things up I know
0:07:49.150,0:07:54.969
California is a bit more strict on their
0:07:51.990,0:07:57.099
their reopening requirements too right
0:07:54.969,0:08:00.789
right that’s why it’s taken them you
0:07:57.099,0:08:03.580
know as long to open up so so tell us
0:08:00.789,0:08:05.889
about the unfortunate Halloween party
0:08:03.580,0:08:08.860
yeah so this was kind of sad but again
0:08:05.889,0:08:11.710
not many people were you know surprised
0:08:08.860,0:08:14.199
by it so Walt Disney World Resort has
0:08:11.710,0:08:17.289
officially cancelled all Mickey’s
0:08:14.199,0:08:19.930
not-so-scary Halloween parties for 2020
0:08:17.289,0:08:23.319
so here was a statement that was posted
0:08:19.930,0:08:25.779
on the Disney parks blog it said while
0:08:23.319,0:08:28.900
assessing another fall special event
0:08:25.779,0:08:31.089
Mickey’s not-so-scary Halloween party we
0:08:28.900,0:08:33.370
determined that many of its hallmarks
0:08:31.089,0:08:36.449
the stage shows parades and fireworks
0:08:33.370,0:08:39.159
are unable to take place in this new
0:08:36.449,0:08:40.899
unprecedented environment with that in
0:08:39.159,0:08:42.849
mind we have made the difficult decision
0:08:40.899,0:08:45.180
to cancel this year’s Mickey’s
0:08:42.849,0:08:48.399
not-so-scary Halloween party
0:08:45.180,0:08:51.010
additionally Disney’s h2o glow Knights
0:08:48.399,0:08:54.130
the nighttime special ticket event at
0:08:51.010,0:08:56.860
Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon will not take
0:08:54.130,0:08:58.480
place for the remainder of 2020 guests
0:08:56.860,0:09:00.399
who have already bought tickets to these
0:08:58.480,0:09:04.149
events will be assisted with refunds
0:09:00.399,0:09:08.050
over the coming weeks so again not
0:09:04.149,0:09:10.260
really a surprise because again a big
0:09:08.050,0:09:12.820
part of the Halloween party besides
0:09:10.260,0:09:16.060
getting candy and trick-or-treating and
0:09:12.820,0:09:18.730
everybody wearing costumes is the
0:09:16.060,0:09:21.339
special parade that they do the special
0:09:18.730,0:09:23.470
fireworks the special stage shows the
0:09:21.339,0:09:26.459
special character meet and greets which
0:09:23.470,0:09:30.160
is all stuff that they’re holding off
0:09:26.459,0:09:32.410
doing you know probably for the rest of
0:09:30.160,0:09:33.790
this year more than likely you know so
0:09:32.410,0:09:37.600
you’re not going to see any of that
0:09:33.790,0:09:39.160
stuff being done so
0:09:37.600,0:09:42.550
so let me ask you as someone who
0:09:39.160,0:09:44.620
obviously we go to Disney yeah sometimes
0:09:42.550,0:09:45.910
multiple times a year we’ve been there a
0:09:44.620,0:09:48.670
number of times you’ve been there more
0:09:45.910,0:09:54.850
times than I think you know Mickey Mouse
0:09:48.670,0:09:56.259
has no nice try how does this how do you
0:09:54.850,0:09:59.380
feel about this how do you feel about
0:09:56.259,0:10:01.149
the fact that they continue and with
0:09:59.380,0:10:04.389
justifiable reason but they continue to
0:10:01.149,0:10:07.269
lop off different services that are the
0:10:04.389,0:10:08.920
appeal of Disney like how does that make
0:10:07.269,0:10:11.980
you feel about wanting to go back down
0:10:08.920,0:10:15.519
again I don’t know I think you need to
0:10:11.980,0:10:17.589
have and I think this is something just
0:10:15.519,0:10:21.639
in general you need to have something to
0:10:17.589,0:10:25.029
look forward to you need to have some
0:10:21.639,0:10:27.160
sort of hope that things are gonna get
0:10:25.029,0:10:30.220
back to normal here in New Jersey
0:10:27.160,0:10:32.560
starting tomorrow you know dentists
0:10:30.220,0:10:35.790
offices and doctors offices are starting
0:10:32.560,0:10:40.569
to afford well I’m just saying
0:10:35.790,0:10:43.360
dentist you know hair salons nail salons
0:10:40.569,0:10:45.579
you know are starting to open the
0:10:43.360,0:10:47.709
restaurants are starting to open but
0:10:45.579,0:10:49.689
just for outside seating you know it’s
0:10:47.709,0:10:53.290
been since the middle of March that’s
0:10:49.689,0:10:56.189
yeah that’s a really long time when when
0:10:53.290,0:11:01.029
you think about it that we’ve all been
0:10:56.189,0:11:04.269
you know in protected so let me play
0:11:01.029,0:11:08.380
devil’s advocate I say as of the
0:11:04.269,0:11:10.569
reporting yesterday 19 states are seeing
0:11:08.380,0:11:12.730
their infection rates right go up some
0:11:10.569,0:11:15.009
double what they’ve been seeing right
0:11:12.730,0:11:17.769
and laura de being among and part of
0:11:15.009,0:11:21.100
that is because things are opening up
0:11:17.769,0:11:23.019
but people aren’t doing it the right way
0:11:21.100,0:11:25.000
like you had mentioned you know the
0:11:23.019,0:11:27.910
other day there’s a restaurant that you
0:11:25.000,0:11:30.009
pass on your way home from work where
0:11:27.910,0:11:33.220
they took up part of their parking lot
0:11:30.009,0:11:35.680
area and made you know an outside
0:11:33.220,0:11:37.930
restaurant and nobody was social
0:11:35.680,0:11:40.680
distancing everybody was right on top of
0:11:37.930,0:11:43.750
each other that’s not the way you do it
0:11:40.680,0:11:46.660
whereas you know I mentioned to you when
0:11:43.750,0:11:48.880
I went out yesterday one of the local
0:11:46.660,0:11:51.459
diners that’s near the the farmers
0:11:48.880,0:11:53.920
market they had an area set up
0:11:51.459,0:11:56.800
it was all fenced in so you couldn’t get
0:11:53.920,0:11:59.139
to it without going in a certain area
0:11:56.800,0:12:02.249
and they had picnic tables set up and
0:11:59.139,0:12:05.079
they were all six feet maybe even more
0:12:02.249,0:12:07.509
away from each other so it was nice and
0:12:05.079,0:12:10.540
spread out even the Amish market that
0:12:07.509,0:12:13.660
has a restaurant they had a little area
0:12:10.540,0:12:16.029
set up obviously not you know they
0:12:13.660,0:12:17.619
couldn’t fit the same capacity that they
0:12:16.029,0:12:19.240
could in the restaurant and we know that
0:12:17.619,0:12:24.160
that you know the Amish market
0:12:19.240,0:12:26.079
restaurant you know it’s a fire hazard
0:12:24.160,0:12:28.660
probably because you have everybody on
0:12:26.079,0:12:31.899
top of everybody you know there’s a way
0:12:28.660,0:12:34.059
to do it and to do it right we even saw
0:12:31.899,0:12:37.149
it when we went down to Ocean City a
0:12:34.059,0:12:39.220
couple of weeks ago how many you know
0:12:37.149,0:12:41.860
how many people weren’t wearing masks
0:12:39.220,0:12:43.990
now granted most people were keeping
0:12:41.860,0:12:47.980
their distance from everybody like even
0:12:43.990,0:12:50.499
when we were sitting on the benches you
0:12:47.980,0:12:52.689
know that were kind of you know under
0:12:50.499,0:12:54.459
one of the pavilions most people were
0:12:52.689,0:12:56.829
kind of keeping their distance but not
0:12:54.459,0:12:59.499
everybody was wearing a mask that’s I
0:12:56.829,0:13:02.649
think the biggest thing is there’s a way
0:12:59.499,0:13:05.769
to do it and to do it smart and not
0:13:02.649,0:13:09.399
everybody is doing it the smart way and
0:13:05.769,0:13:12.459
I think that’s the thing you know and
0:13:09.399,0:13:14.529
it’ll be interesting to see what Disney
0:13:12.459,0:13:18.879
does is Disney gonna you know really
0:13:14.529,0:13:20.470
police because I’ve heard you know back
0:13:18.879,0:13:24.129
and forth things from people that have
0:13:20.470,0:13:26.019
gone to Universal where the majare the
0:13:24.129,0:13:28.559
people are wearing masks every now and
0:13:26.019,0:13:30.429
then you do see somebody without and
0:13:28.559,0:13:33.220
unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be
0:13:30.429,0:13:36.540
enough cast members walking around to
0:13:33.220,0:13:39.309
enforce it I have a feeling Disney being
0:13:36.540,0:13:41.110
Disney is gonna be a little bit harder
0:13:39.309,0:13:43.540
on it and basically say if you don’t
0:13:41.110,0:13:45.970
wear a mask you don’t come in it’s our
0:13:43.540,0:13:48.449
house it’s our rules if you can’t abide
0:13:45.970,0:13:51.369
by it there’s the door
0:13:48.449,0:13:52.839
well we’ll say I mean they I think right
0:13:51.369,0:13:55.089
now that’s kind of the attitude we have
0:13:52.839,0:13:58.649
it’s a very much wait-and-see attitude
0:13:55.089,0:14:01.660
to see where Disney takes this and how
0:13:58.649,0:14:05.379
strict they enforce it like I would love
0:14:01.660,0:14:07.149
for us to go back down like we did this
0:14:05.379,0:14:09.429
last year and go down around
0:14:07.149,0:14:13.149
Christmastime and and be there because
0:14:09.429,0:14:15.069
we you know we only did the one park and
0:14:13.149,0:14:17.289
it was rather crowded because it was
0:14:15.069,0:14:19.749
Christmas Eve and and also it was
0:14:17.289,0:14:21.759
Hollywood studios because of galaxy’s
0:14:19.749,0:14:24.849
edge and things like that I want to see
0:14:21.759,0:14:27.759
what they’re doing for the rides because
0:14:24.849,0:14:30.549
obviously we know there’s going to be
0:14:27.759,0:14:34.389
limited people in the park but what are
0:14:30.549,0:14:36.129
you doing virtual cues for the majority
0:14:34.389,0:14:40.809
of the rod are you allowing more people
0:14:36.129,0:14:42.879
to have fast passes so again not a lot
0:14:40.809,0:14:45.609
of people are waiting on well on rides
0:14:42.879,0:14:47.519
we have not really heard a lot of what
0:14:45.609,0:14:53.739
they’re doing down there now with the
0:14:47.519,0:14:56.769
reservations in the park and the no food
0:14:53.739,0:14:58.629
plans and you know right my concern is
0:14:56.769,0:15:01.569
that there’s just so many restrictions
0:14:58.629,0:15:04.899
right now on what you can do right if
0:15:01.569,0:15:06.399
you can get in the park okay but they’re
0:15:04.899,0:15:08.559
still charging the same amount of money
0:15:06.399,0:15:11.019
right and that’s where we were talking
0:15:08.559,0:15:14.350
about this you know the other night is
0:15:11.019,0:15:16.869
they really should be giving some sort
0:15:14.350,0:15:19.629
of discount to you and that was the
0:15:16.869,0:15:21.100
thing if you remember when the Park
0:15:19.629,0:15:23.739
first closed and there were people that
0:15:21.100,0:15:26.109
had upcoming reservations you know they
0:15:23.739,0:15:28.329
were offering you to cancel but in a lot
0:15:26.109,0:15:31.509
of cases they were pushing out your
0:15:28.329,0:15:32.829
reservation to later in the year and for
0:15:31.509,0:15:34.839
a lot of people that were having their
0:15:32.829,0:15:37.689
reservation pushed out they were getting
0:15:34.839,0:15:40.899
a free dining plan as as an upgrade like
0:15:37.689,0:15:42.459
ooh and then of course you find out that
0:15:40.899,0:15:44.769
they do away with it so now you’re like
0:15:42.459,0:15:48.039
alright so for that you should give me
0:15:44.769,0:15:51.639
like 50% off like and and think about
0:15:48.039,0:15:55.509
like the the cruise lines and the
0:15:51.639,0:15:57.519
airlines that are doing dirt-cheap you
0:15:55.509,0:16:00.129
know reservations and things like that
0:15:57.519,0:16:02.079
I’m surprised Disney has I’m sure
0:16:00.129,0:16:03.459
there’s something well cuz I think I
0:16:02.079,0:16:05.529
think actually that was one of the
0:16:03.459,0:16:08.349
articles I did remember seeing something
0:16:05.529,0:16:11.289
about if you did have the dining plan
0:16:08.349,0:16:13.689
and since they are taking that away you
0:16:11.289,0:16:16.059
were gonna get some sort of percentage
0:16:13.689,0:16:19.160
off of your hotel room right well give
0:16:16.059,0:16:21.860
me a percentage off of my park ticket
0:16:19.160,0:16:24.530
at that point well cuz that’s the thing
0:16:21.860,0:16:26.540
they’re not robbing you of your resort
0:16:24.530,0:16:28.610
experience you can still get the same
0:16:26.540,0:16:31.630
resort experience right they’re robbing
0:16:28.610,0:16:33.980
me of my parking area so if I’m getting
0:16:31.630,0:16:35.960
70% of the park experience that I should
0:16:33.980,0:16:38.270
be getting I should be paying 70% of
0:16:35.960,0:16:41.630
what the park ticket is right and and
0:16:38.270,0:16:44.930
like I said for for us I think what we
0:16:41.630,0:16:49.100
did this past December when we went down
0:16:44.930,0:16:52.340
I wouldn’t mind repeating that vacation
0:16:49.100,0:16:55.250
plan do a couple days at Walt Disney
0:16:52.340,0:16:58.280
World Resort maybe do a park maybe not
0:16:55.250,0:17:01.460
there’s again enough going on that you
0:16:58.280,0:17:03.260
don’t necessarily need to spend all the
0:17:01.460,0:17:06.680
day in the park just to actually have a
0:17:03.260,0:17:09.740
relaxing vacation do a couple days at
0:17:06.680,0:17:12.650
Vero Beach yeah you know cuz that was
0:17:09.740,0:17:15.949
very enjoyable we you know and that’s it
0:17:12.650,0:17:18.530
like yeah if we avoid the part of the
0:17:15.949,0:17:21.050
park that is really what’s being
0:17:18.530,0:17:25.720
affected by this whole thing will
0:17:21.050,0:17:27.980
probably have an enjoyable time yeah but
0:17:25.720,0:17:31.730
there’s things of the park that we want
0:17:27.980,0:17:36.740
to do absolutely that’s its yeah I don’t
0:17:31.730,0:17:38.840
think I feel comfortable for at least a
0:17:36.740,0:17:41.720
couple of months it you know let’s let
0:17:38.840,0:17:44.660
the park open let’s see how the guests
0:17:41.720,0:17:47.360
are that’s really who it is it’s not I
0:17:44.660,0:17:48.860
know the park itself and the the cast
0:17:47.360,0:17:50.750
members are gonna do an excellent job
0:17:48.860,0:17:53.870
doing what they have to do
0:17:50.750,0:17:56.030
it’s what’s the mentality of the other
0:17:53.870,0:17:57.860
guests and this was a story that I was I
0:17:56.030,0:18:00.170
was telling you guys last night at
0:17:57.860,0:18:02.990
dinner there was a friend of mine who is
0:18:00.170,0:18:05.600
a travel agent and she posted a rant on
0:18:02.990,0:18:07.430
Facebook because other travel agents
0:18:05.600,0:18:09.530
were saying oh if you walk around with a
0:18:07.430,0:18:11.960
drink in your hand you don’t have to
0:18:09.530,0:18:13.400
wear your mask so just you know have an
0:18:11.960,0:18:14.300
empty cup and walk around then you won’t
0:18:13.400,0:18:16.580
have to wear a mask
0:18:14.300,0:18:20.030
and it was kind of like really you need
0:18:16.580,0:18:22.550
to buck the system well where is it with
0:18:20.030,0:18:24.290
a buck the handicap right exactly here
0:18:22.550,0:18:26.240
I’ll get you a note from a doctor so
0:18:24.290,0:18:28.910
that you can get you know all your fast
0:18:26.240,0:18:30.700
passes so that’s that’s what I wanted
0:18:28.910,0:18:33.040
roads and for everyone else
0:18:30.700,0:18:36.160
and that’s what I want to see how Disney
0:18:33.040,0:18:39.100
handles the jerks that are trying to do
0:18:36.160,0:18:41.610
that if everybody’s going there and 90%
0:18:39.100,0:18:45.280
of people are wearing masks I’d feel
0:18:41.610,0:18:47.470
better about going sure you know going
0:18:45.280,0:18:50.020
there well the one thing that Disney is
0:18:47.470,0:18:52.590
improving is the security check you know
0:18:50.020,0:18:54.940
so tell us about the new hands-off
0:18:52.590,0:18:57.220
security bags yes so this is something
0:18:54.940,0:18:59.410
that they’ve started doing at Disney
0:18:57.220,0:19:03.630
springs they’re testing a new security
0:18:59.410,0:19:06.070
scanner technology with guests that is
0:19:03.630,0:19:10.990
contactless and it’s basically a
0:19:06.070,0:19:13.510
full-body scanner powered by the Evolve
0:19:10.990,0:19:16.810
technology and it is set to screen
0:19:13.510,0:19:19.090
guests quickly and safely if implemented
0:19:16.810,0:19:21.730
at the Disney parks the technology could
0:19:19.090,0:19:24.160
help drastically decrease the wait times
0:19:21.730,0:19:25.930
at the theme park checkpoints guests
0:19:24.160,0:19:29.020
would no longer have to open their bags
0:19:25.930,0:19:31.120
to have Disney security check them so
0:19:29.020,0:19:34.270
the company states that with these new
0:19:31.120,0:19:35.910
scanners they can check over 3,600
0:19:34.270,0:19:38.170
people per hour
0:19:35.910,0:19:40.630
visitors basically can walk through
0:19:38.170,0:19:42.760
side-by-side or in a group and the
0:19:40.630,0:19:45.490
scanners are made to detect guns and
0:19:42.760,0:19:47.320
other types of weapons and the system is
0:19:45.490,0:19:49.300
made to display where there is a
0:19:47.320,0:19:52.510
potential threat on a person’s body or
0:19:49.300,0:19:56.110
in their bag to security the security
0:19:52.510,0:19:58.380
members in real time so they got to see
0:19:56.110,0:20:01.090
this you know in action and basically
0:19:58.380,0:20:03.850
the Disney security cast members are
0:20:01.090,0:20:07.420
watching the tablet as people pass
0:20:03.850,0:20:09.610
through the system is also supposed to
0:20:07.420,0:20:12.010
be smart enough to distinguish person
0:20:09.610,0:20:15.460
personal items such as phones wallets
0:20:12.010,0:20:17.560
and non-threatening items and that the
0:20:15.460,0:20:19.420
scanner can actually check the
0:20:17.560,0:20:21.490
temperature of guests as they walk
0:20:19.420,0:20:23.320
through so here you’d be able to have
0:20:21.490,0:20:26.320
your temperature checked and your bags
0:20:23.320,0:20:29.290
checked all in one shot without anybody
0:20:26.320,0:20:31.590
actually having to touch you and it
0:20:29.290,0:20:34.870
seems like it would be a much quicker
0:20:31.590,0:20:37.390
system then obviously you know what they
0:20:34.870,0:20:39.810
do today this this sounds like something
0:20:37.390,0:20:42.190
out of Star Trek oh sure it does or
0:20:39.810,0:20:43.890
Total Recall wasn’t there the scene in
0:20:42.190,0:20:47.110
Total Recall
0:20:43.890,0:20:50.830
yeah yeah and like my question here is
0:20:47.110,0:20:52.120
alright this sounds great on paper what
0:20:50.830,0:20:53.680
why aren’t they using this at the
0:20:52.120,0:20:56.380
airport well and that’s the whole thing
0:20:53.680,0:20:59.740
too if this is up and running why aren’t
0:20:56.380,0:21:03.070
you using it you know in in other places
0:20:59.740,0:21:04.510
is it just so brand new and then Disney
0:21:03.070,0:21:06.970
has it but the airport
0:21:04.510,0:21:08.740
you know Airport airports don’t and
0:21:06.970,0:21:11.380
you’re taking off your shoes or whatever
0:21:08.740,0:21:13.780
like it feels like you know you don’t
0:21:11.380,0:21:16.600
have to you know worry about that just
0:21:13.780,0:21:19.210
think about again you know when we go
0:21:16.600,0:21:21.520
you never have a bag so you go through
0:21:19.210,0:21:23.740
the know bag line now you don’t have to
0:21:21.520,0:21:25.570
separate families everybody can walk
0:21:23.740,0:21:29.440
through together you don’t have to sit
0:21:25.570,0:21:32.110
and empty out your pockets you basically
0:21:29.440,0:21:34.870
just you know walk right through yeah
0:21:32.110,0:21:37.240
the concept is fantastic might come
0:21:34.870,0:21:38.890
curious as to what technology that I use
0:21:37.240,0:21:42.730
I mean they have to be using some type
0:21:38.890,0:21:44.520
of emitted radiation in order to get
0:21:42.730,0:21:47.170
these kind of reads off there because
0:21:44.520,0:21:49.240
there’s nothing that’s going to allow a
0:21:47.170,0:21:52.540
passive scanner to detect something
0:21:49.240,0:21:55.360
that’s you know concealed right right so
0:21:52.540,0:21:57.130
I’m waiting to find out how many people
0:21:55.360,0:21:59.320
think you’re gonna get cancer from this
0:21:57.130,0:22:01.030
and what radiation it Jews right like
0:21:59.320,0:22:03.280
what kind of doctor’s note are people
0:22:01.030,0:22:06.429
gonna cause I’m guessing maybe they’ll
0:22:03.280,0:22:09.850
be a separate offshoot you know if you
0:22:06.429,0:22:11.620
do want have an option of not going
0:22:09.850,0:22:13.630
through this and yeah like you can go
0:22:11.620,0:22:15.150
now you know instead of going through
0:22:13.630,0:22:16.300
the scanner at the airport you can
0:22:15.150,0:22:17.470
pat-down
0:22:16.300,0:22:19.990
right and that’s what I’m saying is
0:22:17.470,0:22:22.000
there gonna be a separate pat-down run
0:22:19.990,0:22:23.890
section for people that don’t feel
0:22:22.000,0:22:27.670
comfortable because remember when they
0:22:23.890,0:22:30.670
instituted the one scanner system they
0:22:27.670,0:22:32.140
only would allow adults right you know
0:22:30.670,0:22:34.200
they would only pick adults to do it
0:22:32.140,0:22:36.910
they never picked kids to do it so
0:22:34.200,0:22:39.790
obviously if they’re having everybody go
0:22:36.910,0:22:41.679
through it it must be well and what safe
0:22:39.790,0:22:43.270
sounds nice about this is they’re
0:22:41.679,0:22:46.030
they’re killing two birds with one stone
0:22:43.270,0:22:48.490
so they’re doing it for a weapons check
0:22:46.030,0:22:50.950
obviously yep but they’re also doing it
0:22:48.490,0:22:54.460
for a temperature check right exactly
0:22:50.950,0:22:57.100
and you know and maybe it does a better
0:22:54.460,0:22:57.450
job than actually having somebody look
0:22:57.100,0:23:00.510
through
0:22:57.450,0:23:03.090
your bag and you know so maybe things
0:23:00.510,0:23:08.130
that you know the people were you know
0:23:03.090,0:23:10.500
just a human error were missing they
0:23:08.130,0:23:11.789
could catch well you know you’ve had
0:23:10.500,0:23:14.399
situations where we’ve gone through
0:23:11.789,0:23:18.320
you’ve had personal items in there right
0:23:14.399,0:23:18.320
that you don’t want people pulling out
0:23:22.190,0:23:26.580
it’d be different if you were doing the
0:23:24.510,0:23:29.399
right checks behind a privacy screen or
0:23:26.580,0:23:31.799
right right so nobody saw you know your
0:23:29.399,0:23:34.049
other things and whatnot now I did want
0:23:31.799,0:23:38.279
to mention that was part of the other
0:23:34.049,0:23:40.500
story so even though Mickey’s
0:23:38.279,0:23:43.950
not-so-scary Halloween party got
0:23:40.500,0:23:46.260
canceled they are actually starting the
0:23:43.950,0:23:48.750
Food and Wine Festival which normally
0:23:46.260,0:23:50.850
starts in the fall that’s actually been
0:23:48.750,0:23:53.669
moved up and that’s gonna start in July
0:23:50.850,0:23:56.010
when the park opened so that was kind of
0:23:53.669,0:23:57.690
uh kind of a trade-off I kind of trade
0:23:56.010,0:23:59.880
off like hey we’re gonna actually have
0:23:57.690,0:24:01.679
this now normally they have the concert
0:23:59.880,0:24:04.590
series that goes along with it that
0:24:01.679,0:24:07.320
they’ve obviously cancelled because they
0:24:04.590,0:24:09.360
don’t want mass people but they are
0:24:07.320,0:24:12.720
gonna have the different musical groups
0:24:09.360,0:24:14.789
that kind of roam around the park those
0:24:12.720,0:24:17.010
are still going to be going on so
0:24:14.789,0:24:21.120
something to look forward to if you are
0:24:17.010,0:24:23.159
planning on going this fall well I think
0:24:21.120,0:24:24.779
that was all we had on Disney detective
0:24:23.159,0:24:28.429
that we’ll take a quick break and come
0:24:24.779,0:24:28.429
back with our Star Wars and things

[Applause]
0:25:36.480,0:25:46.300
go for star wars in science so obviously
0:25:44.320,0:25:46.990
it’s like you had mentioned some bad
0:25:46.300,0:25:49.000
news
0:25:46.990,0:25:52.300
so you know we have a bad feeling about
0:25:49.000,0:25:55.540
this so the organizers of the let’s try
0:25:52.300,0:25:58.300
this again the organizers of Star Wars
0:25:55.540,0:26:00.760
Celebration 2020 have taken to the
0:25:58.300,0:26:03.100
events official Twitter account and with
0:26:00.760,0:26:06.130
a bummer message basically said that
0:26:03.100,0:26:08.800
this year’s celebration which was slated
0:26:06.130,0:26:12.030
to take place in August in Anaheim
0:26:08.800,0:26:14.500
California has officially been canceled
0:26:12.030,0:26:17.530
obviously it’s not much of a surprise
0:26:14.500,0:26:19.750
since we’ve been hearing basically every
0:26:17.530,0:26:22.420
convention that was going to be
0:26:19.750,0:26:26.170
happening this summer has been postponed
0:26:22.420,0:26:28.420
or canceled you know so the organizers
0:26:26.170,0:26:30.850
broke the news to fans in this tweet
0:26:28.420,0:26:32.950
that said at Star Wars Celebration the
0:26:30.850,0:26:35.590
health and safety of our fans attendees
0:26:32.950,0:26:37.990
exhibitors guests and staff is always
0:26:35.590,0:26:41.710
our number one priority due to the
0:26:37.990,0:26:44.050
global impact of kovat 19 the Cova 19
0:26:41.710,0:26:46.630
virus and in speaking with local and
0:26:44.050,0:26:49.300
state authorities at the latest Public
0:26:46.630,0:26:51.940
Health guidelines related to indoor
0:26:49.300,0:26:54.670
conventions we have made the decision to
0:26:51.940,0:26:57.010
cancel Star Wars Celebration for 2020
0:26:54.670,0:26:58.690
while this news is disappointing we are
0:26:57.010,0:27:00.880
happy to announce that Star Wars
0:26:58.690,0:27:06.420
Celebration will return to the Anaheim
0:27:00.880,0:27:13.420
Convention Center on August 18th of 2022
0:27:06.420,0:27:17.440
so again not really a surprise but kind
0:27:13.420,0:27:20.230
of like oh yeah another another
0:27:17.440,0:27:23.170
convention down the tubes which we
0:27:20.230,0:27:25.270
weren’t going to write so it wasn’t a
0:27:23.170,0:27:27.910
loss we thought about it we you know
0:27:25.270,0:27:30.030
because we were gonna go to the one out
0:27:27.910,0:27:32.290
in Chicago and that’s the thing is
0:27:30.030,0:27:34.480
celebration doesn’t happen every year
0:27:32.290,0:27:37.570
but for the last couple of years it
0:27:34.480,0:27:40.000
seems to have been going on kind of
0:27:37.570,0:27:43.570
consecutively in in different locations
0:27:40.000,0:27:44.950
so last summer it was in the Chicago
0:27:43.570,0:27:47.740
area this summer it was
0:27:44.950,0:27:51.610
to be an Anaheim so now they’re
0:27:47.740,0:27:54.550
basically taking two years off you know
0:27:51.610,0:27:56.890
to play had been doing them trying it
0:27:54.550,0:27:58.660
every every two years and yeah
0:27:56.890,0:28:01.390
recently with the movies coming out
0:27:58.660,0:28:03.790
there well the movies the TV shows the
0:28:01.390,0:28:06.280
game every time and there’s been a Star
0:28:03.790,0:28:09.940
Wars blitz oh yeah yeah so you’ve had a
0:28:06.280,0:28:12.220
celebration almost every year but yeah
0:28:09.940,0:28:14.110
it’s kind of a bummer I mean maybe 20 22
0:28:12.220,0:28:16.660
will be able to to head out there for
0:28:14.110,0:28:19.210
yeah yeah I’m kind of looking forward to
0:28:16.660,0:28:22.660
it coming back to Orlando right this way
0:28:19.210,0:28:25.300
we don’t have to fly right drive and buy
0:28:22.660,0:28:26.860
as much stuff as what would be very
0:28:25.300,0:28:30.040
convenient as if they did it in
0:28:26.860,0:28:33.430
coordination with the d23 convention yes
0:28:30.040,0:28:37.120
that would be wow that would be a really
0:28:33.430,0:28:39.370
expensive well and that was like when we
0:28:37.120,0:28:42.130
did celebration Orlando Trail or a
0:28:39.370,0:28:47.890
marathon weekend right so I did I did
0:28:42.130,0:28:52.150
yeah I did the Star Wars 5k yeah so it
0:28:47.890,0:28:53.710
was like a multi trip so yeah nice hint
0:28:52.150,0:28:59.380
hint Disney just in case you wanted to
0:28:53.710,0:29:02.170
make life easy for us so tell us what
0:28:59.380,0:29:05.800
kylo ren’s backstory so this was
0:29:02.170,0:29:07.810
actually a story that you found so kylo
0:29:05.800,0:29:10.300
Ren turned to the dark side after waking
0:29:07.810,0:29:12.850
up one night during you know his
0:29:10.300,0:29:15.100
training to find his mentor Luke
0:29:12.850,0:29:16.780
Skywalker thinking of killing him but
0:29:15.100,0:29:21.010
what if his anger started developing
0:29:16.780,0:29:23.140
long before that so it seems that uh Lev
0:29:21.010,0:29:25.570
Grossman who is the author of the
0:29:23.140,0:29:29.920
magician’s as sharing some outtakes from
0:29:25.570,0:29:32.740
his 2019 Vanity Fair preview of the rise
0:29:29.920,0:29:36.130
of Skywalker so he actually had spoke to
0:29:32.740,0:29:38.800
the entire cast for an article that
0:29:36.130,0:29:41.710
revealed how he you know left out
0:29:38.800,0:29:45.250
something big and that was atom drivers
0:29:41.710,0:29:47.860
backstory for kylo Ren he said I think
0:29:45.250,0:29:50.230
probably the thing that was missing for
0:29:47.860,0:29:54.580
me was I wanted to see more about kylos
0:29:50.230,0:29:58.510
childhood talking about the the last
0:29:54.580,0:29:58.780
Star Wars trilogy he said I thought that
0:29:58.510,0:30:00.640
they would
0:29:58.780,0:30:03.370
go back and show us more about how he
0:30:00.640,0:30:05.410
actually turned to the dark side and
0:30:03.370,0:30:08.200
Adam driver actually had some
0:30:05.410,0:30:12.040
interesting thoughts about Ben solos
0:30:08.200,0:30:14.920
childhood and this is what Adam driver
0:30:12.040,0:30:18.370
had actually told him he said that he
0:30:14.920,0:30:22.180
thought that both Han Solo and Leia were
0:30:18.370,0:30:26.050
just way too self-absorbed and into this
0:30:22.180,0:30:29.320
idea of themselves as heroes to really
0:30:26.050,0:30:33.190
be attentive parents and the way a young
0:30:29.320,0:30:36.460
and tender kylo Ren or Ben solo really
0:30:33.190,0:30:38.500
needed to be attended to and that
0:30:36.460,0:30:42.420
because he didn’t get that much
0:30:38.500,0:30:46.450
attention his childhood basically sucked
0:30:42.420,0:30:47.890
to say the least so yeah you know I saw
0:30:46.450,0:30:52.710
this I thought hey this is a great
0:30:47.890,0:30:55.780
Father’s Day story it’s a story about
0:30:52.710,0:30:57.520
parents not being very good parents and
0:30:55.780,0:30:59.620
your children turning to the dark side
0:30:57.520,0:31:01.090
and becoming mass murderers what could
0:30:59.620,0:31:05.230
be a better Father’s Day story dinner
0:31:01.090,0:31:08.440
happy Father’s Day to you Darth Vader
0:31:05.230,0:31:10.420
himself here you go so I thought that
0:31:08.440,0:31:13.420
was kind of interesting and it’s true
0:31:10.420,0:31:15.970
because you really don’t know you know
0:31:13.420,0:31:18.460
besides the little snippets that you saw
0:31:15.970,0:31:21.100
could you imagine how much heat they
0:31:18.460,0:31:22.600
would have taken painting han and Leia
0:31:21.100,0:31:25.600
in such a negative light
0:31:22.600,0:31:27.790
well that’s the thing is obviously
0:31:25.600,0:31:29.500
something went wrong with Han and Leia
0:31:27.790,0:31:33.610
because they weren’t together anymore
0:31:29.500,0:31:35.500
they obviously split up right was it
0:31:33.610,0:31:37.840
because their son turned to the dark
0:31:35.500,0:31:41.370
side and both of them were blaming each
0:31:37.840,0:31:45.910
other for it or was it something that Oh
0:31:41.370,0:31:48.160
bad blood of you know Anakin and that’s
0:31:45.910,0:31:51.060
why you did you know but you know if you
0:31:48.160,0:31:54.340
just watched the trilogy for what it is
0:31:51.060,0:31:55.930
Luke takes to blame in all this yeah so
0:31:54.340,0:32:01.120
not only does Luke take the blame for
0:31:55.930,0:32:03.070
turning in you know to the dark side he
0:32:01.120,0:32:05.520
also gets literally like three minutes
0:32:03.070,0:32:08.530
of screen time in the entire trilogy
0:32:05.520,0:32:10.179
like how much more disrespect could you
0:32:08.530,0:32:13.029
throw Luke’s way yeah
0:32:10.179,0:32:15.669
yeah just wrong but it would be
0:32:13.029,0:32:19.059
interesting to to see if somebody did
0:32:15.669,0:32:22.659
you know a book or something yeah you
0:32:19.059,0:32:25.059
know Ben’s childhood and and what shape
0:32:22.659,0:32:27.279
do you know a family and that’s the
0:32:25.059,0:32:31.029
thing if you look at the expanded
0:32:27.279,0:32:34.389
universe there’s an extensive storyline
0:32:31.029,0:32:36.249
about Han and Leia and raising at the
0:32:34.389,0:32:38.169
time they had three kids right
0:32:36.249,0:32:40.450
so you know in the expanding universe
0:32:38.169,0:32:43.299
you had the first ones that were born
0:32:40.450,0:32:45.669
with the twins Jason and Jeana then they
0:32:43.299,0:32:49.470
had another son who was a younger son
0:32:45.669,0:32:52.600
and in the community universe their
0:32:49.470,0:32:54.399
oldest son Jason turns to the dark side
0:32:52.600,0:33:00.399
through those dark ages
0:32:54.399,0:33:04.389
so it’s a very similar story but the the
0:33:00.399,0:33:06.970
family arraigned the family bonding that
0:33:04.389,0:33:10.529
happens is very different you know
0:33:06.970,0:33:13.929
they’re a fairly a tight-knit group of
0:33:10.529,0:33:16.299
characters yeah as the kids are growing
0:33:13.929,0:33:19.450
up the because a lot of times you know
0:33:16.299,0:33:20.769
she’s Leia still this diplomat right he
0:33:19.450,0:33:23.019
becomes head of state of the New
0:33:20.769,0:33:25.779
Republic and everything and hands by her
0:33:23.019,0:33:29.019
side so there is a lot of neglect for
0:33:25.779,0:33:30.879
the kids the kids are tossed between you
0:33:29.019,0:33:32.169
know nursemaids and babysitters and
0:33:30.879,0:33:33.730
stuff like that and they’re always
0:33:32.169,0:33:37.450
getting in the trouble and stuff like
0:33:33.730,0:33:41.139
that I could totally see how that would
0:33:37.450,0:33:43.149
turn someone like Darth Cadis or in this
0:33:41.139,0:33:47.999
case kylo Ren to the dark side right
0:33:43.149,0:33:47.999
right so it makes for a really
0:33:50.879,0:33:55.570
exaggerated averse it was because he
0:33:53.350,0:33:58.960
went to explore the possibilities of
0:33:55.570,0:34:04.539
what he could become and just like with
0:33:58.960,0:34:07.960
Anakin he had a vision of doom and gloom
0:34:04.539,0:34:09.639
that he thought he was the only person
0:34:07.960,0:34:12.040
that could save things and in order the
0:34:09.639,0:34:14.800
same things he needed the power bi
0:34:12.040,0:34:17.050
associated with the dark side
0:34:14.800,0:34:21.820
so yeah totally a believable backstory
0:34:17.050,0:34:26.320
for kylo Ren yeah so what else did we
0:34:21.820,0:34:30.960
have that was Star Wars we’ll be back in
0:34:26.320,0:34:30.960
a minute for our entertainment news

the topics concerning today’s youth we

look at how the issues affect teens how
0:35:05.089,0:35:09.859
to cope with these issues and how
0:35:07.250,0:35:12.880
parents friends and loved ones can help
0:35:09.859,0:35:12.880
teens handle these challenges

[Music]
0:35:38.010,0:35:44.020
so tell us about what’s going on with
0:35:40.990,0:35:46.300
the Oscars so obviously we’ve you know
0:35:44.020,0:35:49.660
every couple of weeks there’s new things
0:35:46.300,0:35:53.170
that that pop up with the Oscars talking
0:35:49.660,0:35:57.190
about what’s been eligible what’s not
0:35:53.170,0:36:00.460
basically you know because the movie
0:35:57.190,0:36:02.619
theaters aren’t open they had allowed
0:36:00.460,0:36:04.660
movies that were being streamed on
0:36:02.619,0:36:07.660
different streaming surfaces to be
0:36:04.660,0:36:10.330
eligible so now because of everything
0:36:07.660,0:36:12.490
they’ve actually pushed back when the
0:36:10.330,0:36:16.599
ceremony and all of the different
0:36:12.490,0:36:19.240
eligibilities for being nominated will
0:36:16.599,0:36:21.849
occur so originally the show was
0:36:19.240,0:36:24.250
supposed to be going on February 28th
0:36:21.849,0:36:27.400
and now it’s been pushed back to April
0:36:24.250,0:36:32.200
25th the plan is that it’s still going
0:36:27.400,0:36:36.720
to be broadcast on ABC but just kind of
0:36:32.200,0:36:38.950
pushed out and also the idea that
0:36:36.720,0:36:43.839
eligibility was supposed to be from
0:36:38.950,0:36:47.320
January 20th to December 31st 2020 has
0:36:43.839,0:36:50.230
now been extended to February 28th so
0:36:47.320,0:36:54.010
they’ve kind of changed the timeline of
0:36:50.230,0:36:58.180
when things can be eligible but the idea
0:36:54.010,0:37:00.400
in a statement they did say that after
0:36:58.180,0:37:03.430
you know this year they are going to go
0:37:00.400,0:37:05.800
back to a January to December calendar
0:37:03.430,0:37:10.060
year so they’ve extended it obviously do
0:37:05.800,0:37:12.070
the two the pandemic and then it’s funny
0:37:10.060,0:37:14.830
because looking at all of the lists of
0:37:12.070,0:37:18.609
things it’s more than just the Oscar
0:37:14.830,0:37:20.770
show that happens so they have the
0:37:18.609,0:37:22.990
voting that begins
0:37:20.770,0:37:26.109
so voting is going to begin on February
0:37:22.990,0:37:28.630
1st voting is going to end on the 5th
0:37:26.109,0:37:30.310
then they have the shortlist come out
0:37:28.630,0:37:34.510
then they you know they do the
0:37:30.310,0:37:36.430
nominations so then there’s you know a
0:37:34.510,0:37:38.349
luncheon and the final voting there’s
0:37:36.430,0:37:41.200
this whole big timeline that basically
0:37:38.349,0:37:43.570
got you know pushed out which normally
0:37:41.200,0:37:45.520
would start in January and now isn’t
0:37:43.570,0:37:46.870
starting until kind of like the end of
0:37:45.520,0:37:50.050
February
0:37:46.870,0:37:51.940
but then even from that point the Oscar
0:37:50.050,0:37:54.370
still don’t show up for you know another
0:37:51.940,0:37:56.610
couple of months the other thing was
0:37:54.370,0:38:00.750
that they were supposed to be opening a
0:37:56.610,0:38:03.160
Academy Awards Museum this year and
0:38:00.750,0:38:05.080
because of everything going on that’s
0:38:03.160,0:38:10.590
been pushed back so that’s actually now
0:38:05.080,0:38:13.210
going to be opening in April of 2021 so
0:38:10.590,0:38:15.100
again not really a surprise you know
0:38:13.210,0:38:16.510
they’re not canceling it at this point
0:38:15.100,0:38:18.820
they’re still planning on doing it
0:38:16.510,0:38:21.820
they’re still planning on a live show
0:38:18.820,0:38:26.230
but just being pushed out a couple of
0:38:21.820,0:38:26.890
extra months so this is pretty far out
0:38:26.230,0:38:29.620
at this point
0:38:26.890,0:38:33.400
yeah I’m assuming they haven’t announced
0:38:29.620,0:38:35.050
any kind of safety protocols like that
0:38:33.400,0:38:36.700
at this point yeah and that’s the thing
0:38:35.050,0:38:39.010
is they’re still planning on it being a
0:38:36.700,0:38:41.050
live show they’re still planning on you
0:38:39.010,0:38:43.570
know people being there the only thing I
0:38:41.050,0:38:45.570
could think of is that maybe you only
0:38:43.570,0:38:49.000
have people that are actually nominated
0:38:45.570,0:38:54.310
whereas normally you have everybody else
0:38:49.000,0:38:58.060
in there you know whoever’s you know in
0:38:54.310,0:39:00.760
the it you know the the it crowd you
0:38:58.060,0:39:02.560
know any I’m sure it’s how they’re gonna
0:39:00.760,0:39:05.320
manage this because the way that they
0:39:02.560,0:39:09.400
they do this you know they they packed
0:39:05.320,0:39:14.980
the auditorium right and I worked with a
0:39:09.400,0:39:16.540
woman who her sister or someone was a
0:39:14.980,0:39:18.820
filler what they would write all the
0:39:16.540,0:39:21.700
fillers and when you would have people
0:39:18.820,0:39:23.530
that would leave these waits to present
0:39:21.700,0:39:25.030
right you’d have these people come in
0:39:23.530,0:39:26.860
and sit in those seats to look full
0:39:25.030,0:39:28.930
right so that whenever they did a shot
0:39:26.860,0:39:30.820
of the audience you saw everybody’s
0:39:28.930,0:39:32.770
every seat full yeah like if somebody
0:39:30.820,0:39:34.900
had to get up to go to the restroom or
0:39:32.770,0:39:36.970
to present or something like that so
0:39:34.900,0:39:39.340
there is always this focus on writing
0:39:36.970,0:39:40.900
the auditorium look for right
0:39:39.340,0:39:43.270
can you imagine what that’s gonna look
0:39:40.900,0:39:45.430
like if you’re doing yeah you’re you
0:39:43.270,0:39:47.560
know every other seed or something and
0:39:45.430,0:39:51.520
that’s the other thing too is we know
0:39:47.560,0:39:53.560
that later next month mid-july the movie
0:39:51.520,0:39:56.170
theaters are supposed to be opening up
0:39:53.560,0:39:58.810
and most of the movie theaters around
0:39:56.170,0:40:00.640
here you you know you have to buy your
0:39:58.810,0:40:02.740
ticket a couple of days in advance and
0:40:00.640,0:40:05.710
you pick your seat I’m sure they’re
0:40:02.740,0:40:07.750
already gonna have blocked off seats
0:40:05.710,0:40:10.180
that are available for you to pick and
0:40:07.750,0:40:12.819
seats that are it buffers you like
0:40:10.180,0:40:15.130
buffer seats I’m sure they’re probably
0:40:12.819,0:40:17.230
gonna do something like that maybe just
0:40:15.130,0:40:18.760
who’s nominated and a guest maybe you
0:40:17.230,0:40:22.960
won’t even be allowed to guess maybe
0:40:18.760,0:40:25.089
it’ll just be you know just whoever is
0:40:22.960,0:40:28.809
bringing know anything it’s so far out
0:40:25.089,0:40:31.660
at this point in time yes any safety
0:40:28.809,0:40:34.029
protocols is there right bye-bye then
0:40:31.660,0:40:36.400
you know by then we might not need to
0:40:34.029,0:40:39.339
maybe but could you imagine watching an
0:40:36.400,0:40:41.529
Oscars all the stars wearing face masks
0:40:39.339,0:40:42.010
yeah everybody two seats away from each
0:40:41.529,0:40:43.720
other
0:40:42.010,0:40:45.720
yeah if you like watching a Donald Trump
0:40:43.720,0:40:47.970
rally
0:40:45.720,0:40:52.770
it’d probably be more people at the
0:40:47.970,0:40:55.200
Oscars that is rally sorry and hi
0:40:52.770,0:40:55.950
anyways so the same should be
0:40:55.200,0:40:59.099
interesting
0:40:55.950,0:41:02.069
yeah I’m curious if the rule changes are
0:40:59.099,0:41:03.390
gonna lead to eligibility for any movies
0:41:02.069,0:41:06.240
that wouldn’t normally have been
0:41:03.390,0:41:07.619
eligible this year yeah you know that
0:41:06.240,0:41:10.950
that’s the thing is they’re extending
0:41:07.619,0:41:14.760
the timeline even for like for Best Song
0:41:10.950,0:41:16.770
and four different categories you know
0:41:14.760,0:41:19.020
things are changing so it’ll be
0:41:16.770,0:41:20.940
interesting to see what gets in that
0:41:19.020,0:41:23.579
normally wouldn’t and what doesn’t get
0:41:20.940,0:41:26.520
in well and you know our discussions of
0:41:23.579,0:41:30.690
the last two Oscars is done on this
0:41:26.520,0:41:34.829
podcast have centered almost exclusively
0:41:30.690,0:41:37.530
around their attempts to restrict right
0:41:34.829,0:41:39.780
from like Netflix and things like that
0:41:37.530,0:41:42.780
we’re here not only do you have things
0:41:39.780,0:41:45.990
that were on Netflix that are eligible
0:41:42.780,0:41:48.990
you know but didn’t get to play in the
0:41:45.990,0:41:51.210
theater multiple new streaming services
0:41:48.990,0:41:53.039
are out there at Disney Plus peacock and
0:41:51.210,0:41:55.589
stuff like that you’ve got movies that
0:41:53.039,0:41:57.690
were released online because of the
0:41:55.589,0:41:59.730
right that make that right in theaters
0:41:57.690,0:42:02.760
right so how do you determine because
0:41:59.730,0:42:05.369
their guideline was always it’s fine if
0:42:02.760,0:42:07.890
it was streaming but you had to play and
0:42:05.369,0:42:11.460
leap at least one theater in the
0:42:07.890,0:42:13.289
California in Los Angeles County blah
0:42:11.460,0:42:16.170
blah blah blah but this year they said
0:42:13.289,0:42:18.480
even if it didn’t and it went to
0:42:16.170,0:42:20.730
streaming it would be fine so now you’ll
0:42:18.480,0:42:24.289
have a lot more movies that normally
0:42:20.730,0:42:26.880
wouldn’t be that should be able to be
0:42:24.289,0:42:31.140
nominated so what’s the interesting yeah
0:42:26.880,0:42:33.510
tell us about San Diego comic-con so
0:42:31.140,0:42:35.339
this we we knew was was happening
0:42:33.510,0:42:38.819
obviously they had made the decision
0:42:35.339,0:42:40.559
kind of early in everything that they
0:42:38.819,0:42:43.950
were going to be postponing and
0:42:40.559,0:42:47.549
canceling comic-con which for the first
0:42:43.950,0:42:52.980
time in 50 years so that kind of shocked
0:42:47.549,0:42:55.349
people but again it wasn’t really you
0:42:52.980,0:42:57.240
know it wasn’t as shocking because with
0:42:55.349,0:42:59.350
all the safety protocols and everything
0:42:57.240,0:43:02.380
and knowing how many people attend
0:42:59.350,0:43:03.040
San Diego it was obviously the smartest
0:43:02.380,0:43:05.500
thing to do
0:43:03.040,0:43:09.220
so now San Diego has revealed its plans
0:43:05.500,0:43:11.940
for comic-con at home announcing free
0:43:09.220,0:43:14.770
and unlimited attendance to the virtual
0:43:11.940,0:43:19.210
convention which is now set to take
0:43:14.770,0:43:20.860
place July 22nd to the 26th so earlier
0:43:19.210,0:43:23.680
this year comic-con had officially
0:43:20.860,0:43:26.320
cancelled due to the corona pandemic a
0:43:23.680,0:43:28.420
virtual version was just announced
0:43:26.320,0:43:31.960
shortly after to kind of fill the void
0:43:28.420,0:43:33.970
by the popular annual event so San Diego
0:43:31.960,0:43:36.730
comic-con has now announced its plans
0:43:33.970,0:43:40.930
for its first ever virtual convention
0:43:36.730,0:43:42.490
which will be free which is awesome so
0:43:40.930,0:43:45.250
for the first time in our 50-year
0:43:42.490,0:43:47.410
history we’re happy to welcome virtually
0:43:45.250,0:43:50.980
anyone from around the globe
0:43:47.410,0:43:52.630
a spokesperson had said through stay at
0:43:50.980,0:43:54.700
home condition though stay at home
0:43:52.630,0:43:56.920
conditions make makes this a very
0:43:54.700,0:43:59.050
difficult time we see it as an
0:43:56.920,0:44:03.520
opportunity to spread some joy and
0:43:59.050,0:44:08.140
strengthen our sense of community so you
0:44:03.520,0:44:10.810
know obviously they have you know all
0:44:08.140,0:44:14.020
the different panels so now they’ll be
0:44:10.810,0:44:17.970
able to be accessible the other thing
0:44:14.020,0:44:21.390
too is that they are gonna offer online
0:44:17.970,0:44:23.530
various limited edition products and
0:44:21.390,0:44:24.880
t-shirts and things like that things
0:44:23.530,0:44:27.690
that you would normally be able to
0:44:24.880,0:44:30.520
purchase at comic-con and usually only
0:44:27.690,0:44:31.870
yeah if you went there that’s usually
0:44:30.520,0:44:33.880
one of the biggest draws of comic-con
0:44:31.870,0:44:37.240
right so now they’re actually gonna make
0:44:33.880,0:44:40.030
it available I’m sure still limited you
0:44:37.240,0:44:43.660
know limited quantities but now anybody
0:44:40.030,0:44:45.790
will be able to purchase them online so
0:44:43.660,0:44:48.910
they’re gonna have exclusive panels and
0:44:45.790,0:44:52.030
presentations related to comics gaming
0:44:48.910,0:44:53.110
television film that basically you know
0:44:52.030,0:44:55.990
what they’re known for
0:44:53.110,0:44:59.110
they’re also going to be having a
0:44:55.990,0:45:04.180
masquerade some gaming and other
0:44:59.110,0:45:06.280
activities for participants to to for
0:45:04.180,0:45:09.760
activities for attendees to participate
0:45:06.280,0:45:13.240
in so it’s set again for the 22nd to the
0:45:09.760,0:45:15.730
26th attendance again is
0:45:13.240,0:45:18.580
free but they are gonna I thought this
0:45:15.730,0:45:21.400
was cute provide badges for fans to
0:45:18.580,0:45:23.290
print out and wear as they login for
0:45:21.400,0:45:26.500
their you know so you can wear your
0:45:23.290,0:45:28.750
little thing yeah so kind of kind of
0:45:26.500,0:45:31.119
cool it’ll be interesting to see because
0:45:28.750,0:45:33.220
again and something that we’ll talk
0:45:31.119,0:45:36.750
about a little bit later Wizard World
0:45:33.220,0:45:40.330
has been already doing these virtual
0:45:36.750,0:45:42.300
panels almost every other day it seems
0:45:40.330,0:45:44.830
that you know that they’re doing them
0:45:42.300,0:45:47.680
with different experiences where if you
0:45:44.830,0:45:50.380
really want to have a one-on-one chat
0:45:47.680,0:45:52.780
with somebody or get a signed autograph
0:45:50.380,0:45:55.480
from them you can pay you know an
0:45:52.780,0:45:58.330
additional fee but just to watch the
0:45:55.480,0:46:00.910
panel is free and even if you miss it
0:45:58.330,0:46:03.900
being live they do post it on their
0:46:00.910,0:46:06.790
their YouTube page so I’m wondering if
0:46:03.900,0:46:10.780
San Diego is gonna you know do the same
0:46:06.790,0:46:13.480
thing so as of right now comic-con San
0:46:10.780,0:46:17.410
Diego comic-con is supposed to be
0:46:13.480,0:46:20.380
returning in July of 2021 but to stay
0:46:17.410,0:46:21.940
home edition obviously will be coming
0:46:20.380,0:46:25.480
out if you subscribe to their YouTube
0:46:21.940,0:46:29.140
channel you’ll obviously get updates as
0:46:25.480,0:46:31.030
they come very cool very cool
0:46:29.140,0:46:38.859
we’ll be right back with our insightful
0:46:31.030,0:46:40.930
picks of the week okay go for your
0:46:38.859,0:46:42.880
insightful pick so this is a show that I
0:46:40.930,0:46:44.550
told you about and thankfully you didn’t
0:46:42.880,0:46:46.740
start watching it and steal it from me
0:46:44.550,0:46:50.440
[Laughter]
0:46:46.740,0:46:55.060
so it is called the great debate and it
0:46:50.440,0:46:57.940
is found on the Syfy network or you can
0:46:55.060,0:47:01.720
find it online on Syfy wire.com I
0:46:57.940,0:47:03.820
believe so sci-fi wires the great debate
0:47:01.720,0:47:06.580
is a televised version of the debate
0:47:03.820,0:47:09.160
panels that sci-fi wire would actually
0:47:06.580,0:47:11.890
present at Comic Cons and other
0:47:09.160,0:47:13.810
conventions basically pitting for very
0:47:11.890,0:47:16.630
funny people against each other as they
0:47:13.810,0:47:20.020
debate various pop culture items to see
0:47:16.630,0:47:22.890
who comes out as the winner in this
0:47:20.020,0:47:26.770
televised version the host Baron Vaughn
0:47:22.890,0:47:29.020
and his trusty computer db8
0:47:26.770,0:47:31.690
determine the winner of each debate and
0:47:29.020,0:47:34.240
then at the end pick two people for the
0:47:31.690,0:47:36.700
big debate at the the end and it’s
0:47:34.240,0:47:41.500
really a chance for five funny people to
0:47:36.700,0:47:44.590
goof off and you know have a good time
0:47:41.500,0:47:46.720
I watched the one episode and it was it
0:47:44.590,0:47:49.690
was funny it really was so you had
0:47:46.720,0:47:52.930
Orlando Jones Adam Savage
0:47:49.690,0:47:55.960
Jonah ray and amber Nash basically take
0:47:52.930,0:47:59.530
on nostalgia so you know the first round
0:47:55.960,0:48:03.190
was they had a table full of various
0:47:59.530,0:48:06.790
items from you know the 80s and 90s and
0:48:03.190,0:48:08.950
they had to defend which was you know
0:48:06.790,0:48:13.810
the most awesome like which they should
0:48:08.950,0:48:15.940
bring back so you know so Orlando Jones
0:48:13.810,0:48:18.460
goes for the brick telephone and is like
0:48:15.940,0:48:23.170
yeah this was sexy and if you needed it
0:48:18.460,0:48:26.290
as a hammer you couldn’t and then and
0:48:23.170,0:48:28.450
then Adam Savage takes the Palm Pilot
0:48:26.290,0:48:30.100
and he’s like look how much information
0:48:28.450,0:48:32.500
you could hold and he pulls out a piece
0:48:30.100,0:48:34.480
of paper he goes just as much as I have
0:48:32.500,0:48:35.920
on this and that’s okay you don’t have
0:48:34.480,0:48:37.720
to worry about backing it up to the
0:48:35.920,0:48:40.210
cloud because if you lose all your
0:48:37.720,0:48:46.480
information you can just start fresh all
0:48:40.210,0:48:48.760
up yeah and then and then the one was a
0:48:46.480,0:48:51.640
laserdisc you know and they pop out the
0:48:48.760,0:48:55.180
laser discs and it’s like look it’s sexy
0:48:51.640,0:48:56.410
and lasers everything and you know where
0:48:55.180,0:48:58.420
else could you see behind-the-scenes
0:48:56.410,0:49:01.480
stories that you can’t find anyplace
0:48:58.420,0:49:05.110
else you know and then finally it was
0:49:01.480,0:49:08.020
the Zune and it was like yeah this was
0:49:05.110,0:49:12.270
gonna take over for your iPods and
0:49:08.020,0:49:15.370
where’s your iPod now right you know
0:49:12.270,0:49:17.320
they basically take like the phone and
0:49:15.370,0:49:18.880
the Palm Pilot and the Zune and they put
0:49:17.320,0:49:23.560
it together and they’re like look it’s
0:49:18.880,0:49:26.470
an iPhone you know things that you go
0:49:23.560,0:49:28.840
yeah that’s totally you know totally
0:49:26.470,0:49:30.550
makes sense yeah and then you know the
0:49:28.840,0:49:34.300
next round they they were basically
0:49:30.550,0:49:38.050
battling like what’s better so it was a
0:49:34.300,0:49:40.390
kit in the car versus the battle cat
0:49:38.050,0:49:42.970
like which would you rather have and it
0:49:40.390,0:49:45.039
was like well yeah kit looked really
0:49:42.970,0:49:47.559
cool but you know secretly you knew you
0:49:45.039,0:49:50.950
wanted that you know badass green cat
0:49:47.559,0:49:52.569
that nobody would you know mess with you
0:49:50.950,0:49:55.029
know so that was that was really funny
0:49:52.569,0:49:58.480
what the what was really funny was the
0:49:55.029,0:50:01.869
final round was who was the better
0:49:58.480,0:50:04.750
sensei Yoda or mr. Miyagi
0:50:01.869,0:50:07.240
and it was just hysterical so you know
0:50:04.750,0:50:10.210
if you’re a kid that grew up now granted
0:50:07.240,0:50:13.809
I don’t know if every debate is 80s or
0:50:10.210,0:50:15.970
90s you know related but this episode
0:50:13.809,0:50:18.329
was definitely meant for people our age
0:50:15.970,0:50:20.170
you know cuz it was so funny because
0:50:18.329,0:50:22.630
every now and then there would be
0:50:20.170,0:50:25.299
comments that were made and obviously
0:50:22.630,0:50:27.309
the audience that was there a lot of
0:50:25.299,0:50:29.470
younger kids they’d be like yeah go ask
0:50:27.309,0:50:31.859
your dad he’d know about this you know
0:50:29.470,0:50:35.049
type of comments so really funny show
0:50:31.859,0:50:37.720
half-hour episodes need a good laugh
0:50:35.049,0:50:40.089
have some fun with nostalgia and again
0:50:37.720,0:50:43.150
it’s you know a bunch of geeky people
0:50:40.089,0:50:46.509
talking about geeky things so if you’re
0:50:43.150,0:50:49.059
that type of person which we are perfect
0:50:46.509,0:50:58.509
show to watch nice nice good pick thank
0:50:49.059,0:51:01.720
you so my pick this week should come as
0:50:58.509,0:51:06.039
no surprise to anyone is a documentary
0:51:01.720,0:51:11.049
about war about war my pick this week is
0:51:06.039,0:51:13.180
Rob war to total war on Amazon Prime the
0:51:11.049,0:51:15.160
Second World War was a total war in
0:51:13.180,0:51:17.170
which massive armies advanced
0:51:15.160,0:51:20.140
confronting whole populations with
0:51:17.170,0:51:23.470
impossible choices the manufacture of
0:51:20.140,0:51:26.650
weapons transformed industry and the
0:51:23.470,0:51:29.349
workforce area bombing campaigns reduced
0:51:26.650,0:51:33.160
cities to rubble sieges doomed
0:51:29.349,0:51:36.309
populations to starvation racial policy
0:51:33.160,0:51:38.759
sponsored campaigns of genocide all told
0:51:36.309,0:51:40.960
through incredible archive footage and
0:51:38.759,0:51:44.410
expert interviews what more could you
0:51:40.960,0:51:46.700
ask for sign me up
0:51:44.410,0:51:50.260
the show itself is is interesting
0:51:46.700,0:51:54.170
because unlike most World War two
0:51:50.260,0:51:55.790
documentaries that look at the specifics
0:51:54.170,0:51:57.950
of the battle or they look at the
0:51:55.790,0:52:00.800
generals or the strategies and stuff
0:51:57.950,0:52:04.370
like this this series itself is
0:52:00.800,0:52:07.790
dedicated to looking at the effects that
0:52:04.370,0:52:11.660
the war has on everything else whether
0:52:07.790,0:52:13.370
it’s the economy the industry the people
0:52:11.660,0:52:14.330
at home the people that are in the
0:52:13.370,0:52:17.740
middle of a war zone
0:52:14.330,0:52:21.830
it looks at all the collateral damage
0:52:17.740,0:52:23.720
almost and it really puts the
0:52:21.830,0:52:25.820
perspective of total war and it shows
0:52:23.720,0:52:29.300
the evolution of total war starting in
0:52:25.820,0:52:32.090
the in the 1800s when you know we still
0:52:29.300,0:52:33.740
had people that were lining up in lines
0:52:32.090,0:52:36.230
of battle and people showing up on
0:52:33.740,0:52:39.670
battlefields with picnics to watch the
0:52:36.230,0:52:42.320
battles you know down right right to
0:52:39.670,0:52:45.320
where we wind up with total war with
0:52:42.320,0:52:47.900
entire cities being destroyed it doesn’t
0:52:45.320,0:52:50.330
focus on the destruction of the cities
0:52:47.900,0:52:53.900
it focuses on the effect that it has on
0:52:50.330,0:52:59.390
this the population the citizens and it
0:52:53.900,0:53:03.590
gives you a very rounded feel for what
0:52:59.390,0:53:06.530
war does to the countries that are
0:53:03.590,0:53:10.520
afflicted by it it doesn’t glorify the
0:53:06.530,0:53:13.130
war it doesn’t you know turn individual
0:53:10.520,0:53:14.780
generals or soldiers in the heroes it
0:53:13.130,0:53:18.050
doesn’t do any of the stuff that most
0:53:14.780,0:53:21.710
war documentaries do it doesn’t doesn’t
0:53:18.050,0:53:25.580
try to make the war look appealing but
0:53:21.710,0:53:29.710
it doesn’t try to make it look atrocious
0:53:25.580,0:53:36.400
it shows you a very realistic view of
0:53:29.710,0:53:39.890
the effects of war on on a population so
0:53:36.400,0:53:44.270
World War 2 total war streaming now on
0:53:39.890,0:53:46.610
Amazon Prime and we’ll be back in a
0:53:44.270,0:53:49.060
minute less than a minute for our a
0:53:46.610,0:53:49.060
Truffaut
0:53:49.920,0:53:56.519
[Applause]
0:53:53.359,0:53:59.609
what are we a free afterthoughts so like
0:53:56.519,0:54:02.490
we were talking Virtual Comic Cons or
0:53:59.609,0:54:07.680
popping up all over the place so it
0:54:02.490,0:54:11.220
seems starting actually this Friday they
0:54:07.680,0:54:15.710
were doing something on Monday they’ll
0:54:11.220,0:54:20.099
be doing a Chicago Fire Chicago PD
0:54:15.710,0:54:23.190
virtual panel then on the 24th they’re
0:54:20.099,0:54:25.829
gonna be doing a Gotham on the 25th
0:54:23.190,0:54:28.549
Krypton which was a show we we used to
0:54:25.829,0:54:33.089
watch until Comcast screwed us over
0:54:28.549,0:54:35.130
then next Friday a Walking Dead panel
0:54:33.089,0:54:38.579
with a bunch of different characters
0:54:35.130,0:54:40.490
from that and then next Tuesday not this
0:54:38.579,0:54:42.869
Tuesday but the Tuesday after
0:54:40.490,0:54:45.809
Supernatural with a couple of cast
0:54:42.869,0:54:47.670
members so it’ll be in our show notes if
0:54:45.809,0:54:49.500
you’re interested in looking them up and
0:54:47.670,0:54:51.390
again like I said for a lot of the
0:54:49.500,0:54:54.059
wizard world stuff if you do miss when
0:54:51.390,0:54:56.730
they go live if you do go to their
0:54:54.059,0:54:58.440
YouTube channel they have all of them
0:54:56.730,0:55:02.099
usually posted afterwards
0:54:58.440,0:55:05.700
