Beauty is subjective and perceptive. Every day many people look into the mirror, thinking that they’d change so many things if they really could. They use beauty products to hide what they naturally have and what they don’t like. But when they try to fit into someone else’s definition of beauty, do they truly understand what beauty really is? Teenagers often face significant pressure to meet strict, unrealistic and harmful ideals around beauty, weight, and shape. The quest for a “perfect” body or appearance can take a heavy toll on a teenager’s confidence as well as their physical and mental health. In today’s episode of Insights Into Teens we’ll talk about what you can do to help your child develop and maintain a healthy body image and self-esteem.

This week we talk about Body Anxiety. We’ll talk about what it is and some of the leading causes of Body Anxiety. We’ll look at physical appearance concerns in teens in general, how fashion plays a role in Body Anxiety, what physical self evaluation is and the difficulties in combating social expectations that lead to Body Anxiety. Finally we’ll look at some of the ways that parents can help with adolescents deal with Body Anxiety, promote a positive self image and better understand the challenges teens face regarding this topic.
What is body image and what is the significance of negative or positive body image? We’ll discuss this as well as the common causes of body image issues, the impact it has on a developing teen and at what age the issue of body image begins to play a part in our children. We’ll also look at the warning signs of negative body image, look at some interesting statistics on body image and offer some helpful hints on how to help your teens deal with negative body image.
We celebrate what makes us different in our diversity and how the melding of cultures, religions, ethnicity and preferences makes us stronger. We also look at fear, close minded and an unwillingness to learn are the basis of discrimination. Hatred and intolerance is the root of discrimination and all of the negative effects it has on us and how it holds society back. We’ll also look at what we as individuals can to do overcome discrimination, stand strong and celebrate the unity of our diversity.
