This week we address the difficult topic of the January 6th protest turned insurrection at the United States Capitol Building. It was a dark and scary time for our country to see what was thought to be peaceful protestors supporting President Trump’s claim of victory in the 2020 United States Presidential election March on the Capitol, lay siege to a joint session of congress and breach the building all for the purpose of disrupting the final stage in certifying the election.
We’ll discuss what happened and the progression from protest, to riot to insurrection. We’ll layout the timeline of events as we know at this moment. We’ll talk about some of the crimes committed and the assault on the building itself and what led up to it.
We’ll also talk about the outcome. What was the ultimate result of the insurrection. What happened to the people who participated. What consequences the president and his party face as a result. What the future might hold after this unprecedented event. And finally we’ll have an open discussion about how to talk to your kids about events like this so they can understand what is going on, feel safe with day to day life and can cope with the fear and anxiety unexpected events like this can bring on.

[SEGMENT 1]
Terms
- Protest: an expression or declaration of objection, disapproval, or dissent, often in opposition to something a person is powerless to prevent or avoid:
- Riot: a noisy, violent public disorder caused by a group or crowd of persons, as by a crowd protesting against another group, a government policy, etc., in the streets.
- Insurrection: an act or instance of rising in revolt, rebellion, or resistance against civil authority or an established government.
What happened?
- January 6, both sessions of congress (Senate and House of Representatives) officially certify the election results which have already been counted, recounted, legal challenges resolved and certified by the states
- There’s a lot we still don’t know about what led up to it
- It stems from President Trump refusing to accept the results of the election
- He continued to cling to false claims of the election being stolen from him through various methods
- Miscounting of votes
- Fraudulent votes
- Invalid votes
- Lack of access for Republican observers to view ballot counting
- Etc.
- Despite dozens of investigations, recounts and lawsuits absolutely no evidence has been uncovered to support any of the allegations of the election being rigged or stolen
- Despite the lack of evidence President Trump continued to rouse his followers to get behind his lies
- On the morning of the attack the President held a rally outside the White House
- Several people spoke at the rally including the president
- Most speakers continued to push the false narrative of the stolen election
- They used inflammatory language to agitate the crowds and get them riled up
- President Trump then encouraged them to march on the capitol where a joint session of congress was in the process of validating the election, the last step to completing the process before a new president is sworn in
- Protestors overwhelmed the capital police who were there to contain the crowds
- The crowd quickly turned from peaceful protest to violent riot
- They breached the perimeter of the complex and soon broke into the capitol building
- Senators and representatives were evacuated from the building for their safety
- It wasn’t until several hours later that the national guard and other law enforcement resources were called in to regain control of the situation
- What happened on January 6 was a blatant and deliberate attempt by the President of the United States to stop the process of government that led to a peaceful transfer of power.
- In every definition of the work, the President sparked an insurrection in an attempt to illegally stay in office
[AD1: SSE]
[SEGMENT 2] What was the outcome of the events?
- The attempt to stop the certification of the election failed, President-Elect Joe Biden was certified
- Four protestors and one capitol police officer died as a result of the insurrection
- Many members of the Presidents party have broken away their support for him
- Numerous businesses that work with the Presidents Trump Organization have broken with him thus imposing a financial burden on him
- Numerous organizations that provided political donations to Donald Trump and the Republican party have pulled their support
- A large security presence is ramping up for the January 20th inauguration of the new president
- Including:
- a large contingent of national guard
- Local police agencies
- Other government agencies
- Including:
- Several key people in President Trump’s organization have resigned in protest
- The house of representatives have voted to impeach Donald Trump
- The only president in history to be impeached twice
- There is an ongoing threat of violence not just in Washing DC but around the country at the hands of Donald Trump supporters
- Donald Trump has been banned from social media after using it to inflame the situation
- Donald Trump has begun to soften his language to try to curb continued violence
- Donald Trump will not attend Joe Biden’s swearing in and will likely vacate the White House earlier in the morning before the ceremony
- Donald Trump will have to face the impeachment trial after he’s out of office
- He’s also facing numerous other legal against him both at the state and federal level
- There have been over 100 arrests of rioters from the attack already and more likely to follow
- There are at least 10 capitol police office under investigation for possibly aiding the rioters
- There is a growing movement to ensure that Donald Trump cannot ever run for president again
[AD2: ENTERTAINMENT]
[SEGMENT 3] How parents can help their teens cope with the insurrection
- Give your children the space to ask questions
- The first step in opening a dialogue with your children is creating a safe space for it.
- That means remaining calm, nonjudgmental, and approaching the conversation with your listening hat on.
- Your children need room to share what they’re thinking and feeling.
- The dinner table is a great place to snag some uninterrupted time in a familiar environment.
- Make sure your children know that it’s OK to ask questions. And remember that it’s OK to not have all of the answers to their questions.
- Limit media exposure based on the age of your child
- There can be a bit of a tension between shielding your children from real life versus exposing them to too much.
- By limiting media and social media exposure, you can avoid a flood of information that crosses the threshold of what’s too much for your child.
- What can make it “too much”? Studies have shown that images can elicit stronger emotional reactions in children versus adults.
- Children also have a tendency to emulate what they see, a phenomenon that’s well studied.
- Talking together about what happened, instead, allows the information to be delivered to your child in a safer, more effective way.
- Reassure them that they’re safe
- Whether it’s a hug or telling them that they’re safe and that you’re going to keep them safe, make it a priority to comfort your children before you dig into the tough stuff.
- Brains don’t work as well when stress and fear are high, releasing chemicals that cloud judgment, cognition and rational thinking.
- You want to make sure they’re in a state that’s calm and receptive to information so that the whole family can learn from what happened.
- Younger kids tend to wonder if something bad is going to happen to them or to you.
- Reassuring them not only brings them peace; it allows them to feel like a kid where the burden of being the protector is on the parents.
- Kids need parents to be parents during times of crisis.
- Be transparent and honest
- Do not lie, do not sugarcoat, and do not be vague.
- For younger kids especially, there might be some things you choose not to share.
- It’s better not to say anything than to say something vague that leaves them confused and anxious.
- For what you do decide to share, be direct, yet calm.
- Kids can tell when you aren’t being honest.
- Talk about bad actions, not bad people
- Labeling people as “bad” or “good’ can be confusing, especially for younger kids.
- Talking about bad actions or behaviors instead can help highlight what you do and don’t condone without confusing your child.
- If you conflate the two, a child will likely internalize this and also conflate it later on — thinking that if someone does something bad, they are a bad person, instead of learning to reconcile the idea that one person might have good and bad actions.
- Keeping labels out of it can be helpful for this part of their development.
- Highlight the helpers
- There are typically a lot of helpers during times of crisis, and highlighting them can help instill hope for your child.
- It also helps keep the balance such that your child is not left with only negative memories about the world and people outside of their immediate world.
- It can bring comfort to know that a lot of people are dedicated to helping keep us all safe.
- Name your feelings
- This is an opportunity for parents to teach kids emotional literacy — the ability to recognize, read or name your own emotions.
- By naming what you are feeling, whether it’s outraged, upset, sad, scared or something else, we teach kids how to name their own feelings and teach them a language that they may not already have.
- Some children may not know what they are feeling, or if they do recognize the feeling, they may not have the accurate vocabulary for it.
- By modeling naming the feelings yourself, you’re giving them tools that will serve them throughout their lives — all the while sending the message that having big feelings is OK.
- Keep your own feelings in check
- Seeing your parents in distress is scary, no matter how old you are.
- By keeping your own feelings under wraps, you’ll prevent the restless energy from spilling over to your kids.
- This is where self-care comes into play, whether it’s even a short walk, reading a book, taking your own breaks from the news or doing a workout class.
- By engaging in these activities, you’ll reduce your stress hormones and anxiety levels, in turn helping dial levels of these down for your kids, too.
- Teach healthy coping skills
- This is a great opportunity to model navigating big feelings through the practice of healthy coping skills.
- Try deep breathing exercises, which settle your nervous system, or exercise or music, both of which release feel-good chemicals in the brain.
- The more your kids see you manage your feelings, the more they will learn to manage their own.
- It’s also a good time to maintain as much structure and routine as possible — including regular mealtimes, scheduled activities and usual bedtime routines, so that kids feel a sense of control in an otherwise scary, unpredictable environment.
- Regular family rituals like eating dinner together every night or sharing gratitude lists each morning can bring meaning and comfort during uncomfortable times.
- This is a springboard for tough conversations
- We should not pretend everything is fine or that nothing scary happened.
- Instead, use the breaking news as a springboard from which to have conversations on tough topics.
- Talk about racism, so that kids aren’t left utterly confused as to why some people get arrested or beaten and others are told peacefully to go home.
- Name what happened and call it out. Talk about injustices.

hi everyone how you doing today maddie
0:01:08.799,0:01:12.960
i’m doing pretty well
0:01:10.720,0:01:14.720
ah that does not sound very encouraging
0:01:12.960,0:01:18.080
at all is anything wrong
0:01:14.720,0:01:21.119
i’m just kind of tired oh i see
0:01:18.080,0:01:24.479
long week kinda
0:01:21.119,0:01:25.840
yeah we can have those from time to time
0:01:24.479,0:01:28.320
so this week we’re going to be talking
0:01:25.840,0:01:32.640
about something that is not
0:01:28.320,0:01:34.479
teen specific uh but i think affects
0:01:32.640,0:01:36.400
all americans and probably a lot of
0:01:34.479,0:01:39.200
people around the world
0:01:36.400,0:01:40.640
and that’s the events that happened last
0:01:39.200,0:01:42.640
week
0:01:40.640,0:01:44.640
lat not this wednesday but the wednesday
0:01:42.640,0:01:47.920
before on january 6
0:01:44.640,0:01:51.280
at in washington dc
0:01:47.920,0:01:55.680
we had some protests we had
0:01:51.280,0:01:59.680
some riots and we had what amounted to
0:01:55.680,0:02:03.119
an insurrection against the government
0:01:59.680,0:02:05.040
during a joint session of congress
0:02:03.119,0:02:06.960
when they were trying to certify the
0:02:05.040,0:02:10.560
results of the recent
0:02:06.960,0:02:11.760
presidential election and a lot of stuff
0:02:10.560,0:02:14.800
has happened there’s a lot of things
0:02:11.760,0:02:18.000
that we don’t know still
0:02:14.800,0:02:21.280
but it was kind of a scary moment um
0:02:18.000,0:02:22.800
i watched it live on cnn from work on a
0:02:21.280,0:02:24.480
news feed
0:02:22.800,0:02:26.720
and i think as a lot of people watched
0:02:24.480,0:02:28.959
it there was a lot of
0:02:26.720,0:02:30.319
questions that came up certainly from
0:02:28.959,0:02:32.879
the adults
0:02:30.319,0:02:35.040
in my company and the people that i’ve
0:02:32.879,0:02:37.280
talked to since then
0:02:35.040,0:02:39.519
and i know a lot of kids it’s tough to
0:02:37.280,0:02:41.760
avoid the media exposure
0:02:39.519,0:02:42.959
so a lot of kids have seen this too and
0:02:41.760,0:02:45.599
and i think
0:02:42.959,0:02:48.000
there’s a lot of questions that kids
0:02:45.599,0:02:49.760
might have as well
0:02:48.000,0:02:51.840
so today we’re going to talk about you
0:02:49.760,0:02:52.560
know what happened what the implications
0:02:51.840,0:02:56.000
were
0:02:52.560,0:02:58.159
and uh kind of give some pointers
0:02:56.000,0:02:59.760
to the parents out there about how to
0:02:58.159,0:03:00.400
talk to your kids about this sort of
0:02:59.760,0:03:03.920
thing and
0:03:00.400,0:03:05.760
and how to ease fears and anxieties and
0:03:03.920,0:03:07.920
stuff like that that might
0:03:05.760,0:03:10.720
crop up as a result of this and stuff
0:03:07.920,0:03:10.720
moving forward
0:03:10.959,0:03:14.239
so before we do that i do want to

0:04:08.799,0:04:11.840
are we ready to get into it as ready as
0:04:11.040,0:04:14.950
we’ll ever be
0:04:11.840,0:04:20.320
oh boy that sounds good here we go
0:04:14.950,0:04:23.680
[Music]
0:04:20.320,0:04:25.680
so before we get into the
0:04:23.680,0:04:27.440
proverbial meat and potatoes of this of
0:04:25.680,0:04:29.600
the discussion
0:04:27.440,0:04:31.840
i think it’s important to talk about
0:04:29.600,0:04:33.759
some terms that we’re gonna
0:04:31.840,0:04:35.199
that are gonna surface a lot during this
0:04:33.759,0:04:38.479
discussion
0:04:35.199,0:04:40.840
and the first being protest so a protest
0:04:38.479,0:04:42.000
is an expression or declaration of
0:04:40.840,0:04:45.520
objection
0:04:42.000,0:04:47.280
disapproval dissent uh often in
0:04:45.520,0:04:49.680
opposition to something a person is
0:04:47.280,0:04:52.000
powerless to prevent or avoid
0:04:49.680,0:04:53.440
for instance you could uh protest
0:04:52.000,0:04:56.240
against taxes
0:04:53.440,0:04:58.240
so that’s you know peaceful protest
0:04:56.240,0:05:00.639
exercising your first amendment right
0:04:58.240,0:05:02.560
everyone in the country has the ability
0:05:00.639,0:05:05.520
to do that
0:05:02.560,0:05:06.080
sometimes those progress into something
0:05:05.520,0:05:09.199
a little bit
0:05:06.080,0:05:12.560
more that’s called a riot so
0:05:09.199,0:05:15.759
right is a noisy violent public disorder
0:05:12.560,0:05:18.160
caused by a group or crowd of persons
0:05:15.759,0:05:19.840
as by a crowd protesting against another
0:05:18.160,0:05:23.039
group a government policy
0:05:19.840,0:05:25.440
etc in the streets
0:05:23.039,0:05:26.479
and then if you take it even further
0:05:25.440,0:05:28.000
than that
0:05:26.479,0:05:29.600
you’ll have what we’re going to discuss
0:05:28.000,0:05:33.120
today and that is an
0:05:29.600,0:05:37.199
insurrection an insurrection is an act
0:05:33.120,0:05:40.240
or instance of rising a revolt rebellion
0:05:37.199,0:05:41.199
or resistance against civil authority or
0:05:40.240,0:05:43.919
an established
0:05:41.199,0:05:46.160
government so that’s the terms we’re
0:05:43.919,0:05:48.320
working with today did you have any
0:05:46.160,0:05:49.520
questions concerns or anything else to
0:05:48.320,0:05:53.199
add to those
0:05:49.520,0:05:54.880
so a protest is like just a peaceful way
0:05:53.199,0:05:58.319
to go against
0:05:54.880,0:06:00.479
um something like taxes exactly
0:05:58.319,0:06:01.840
a riot is when you start disturbing the
0:06:00.479,0:06:04.000
peace you start
0:06:01.840,0:06:05.440
just disturbing people who really have
0:06:04.000,0:06:09.440
no part in it
0:06:05.440,0:06:10.319
and um you start to get a little more
0:06:09.440,0:06:14.000
violent
0:06:10.319,0:06:19.120
right and an insurrection um
0:06:14.000,0:06:23.440
is just in on an even larger scale
0:06:19.120,0:06:25.840
um so yeah so an inter an insurrection
0:06:23.440,0:06:28.160
is when you’re
0:06:25.840,0:06:29.759
so a protest is when there’s something
0:06:28.160,0:06:30.080
that you disagree with that you want to
0:06:29.759,0:06:31.840
have
0:06:30.080,0:06:33.440
changed and you go out and you march and
0:06:31.840,0:06:36.479
you pick it and you
0:06:33.440,0:06:37.600
you plead your case a riot is when
0:06:36.479,0:06:41.039
something like that
0:06:37.600,0:06:42.960
becomes violent and people get riled up
0:06:41.039,0:06:44.880
you have this mob mentality
0:06:42.960,0:06:46.160
people start breaking windows and people
0:06:44.880,0:06:48.960
get hurt
0:06:46.160,0:06:51.759
and insurrection is when you take a riot
0:06:48.960,0:06:55.280
or a group of people like that
0:06:51.759,0:06:57.520
and you direct them to the purpose of
0:06:55.280,0:06:58.880
interfering with or overthrowing a
0:06:57.520,0:07:01.120
government operation
0:06:58.880,0:07:02.720
ah that’s what an insurrection is
0:07:01.120,0:07:06.000
insurrection is a
0:07:02.720,0:07:08.639
is a purposeful act
0:07:06.000,0:07:09.599
of defiance against the government of
0:07:08.639,0:07:11.520
some sort
0:07:09.599,0:07:12.800
okay that makes sense so that’s that’s
0:07:11.520,0:07:14.319
kind of the the
0:07:12.800,0:07:16.160
context in which we’re going to operate
0:07:14.319,0:07:18.240
on here
0:07:16.160,0:07:20.560
so the next thing i wanted to do now
0:07:18.240,0:07:23.199
that we have those terms down
0:07:20.560,0:07:24.240
is talk about what happened so the way
0:07:23.199,0:07:28.240
that the
0:07:24.240,0:07:30.479
process of electing a president works
0:07:28.240,0:07:31.360
and we talked about this when we had our
0:07:30.479,0:07:33.520
our
0:07:31.360,0:07:35.599
you running for president podcast we
0:07:33.520,0:07:38.639
kind of talked about the basics
0:07:35.599,0:07:42.080
so the general election happens
0:07:38.639,0:07:46.400
the votes are counted those votes then
0:07:42.080,0:07:46.879
determine how many electoral votes each
0:07:46.400,0:07:50.240
state
0:07:46.879,0:07:52.720
cast for a candidate for president
0:07:50.240,0:07:54.240
the votes are certified at the state
0:07:52.720,0:07:58.080
level
0:07:54.240,0:08:01.199
the state then elects their electors
0:07:58.080,0:08:03.199
okay based on that certification then
0:08:01.199,0:08:07.120
those electors go to washington
0:08:03.199,0:08:10.879
and cast their ballots and then
0:08:07.120,0:08:13.919
the congress senate and
0:08:10.879,0:08:15.120
house of representatives certify those
0:08:13.919,0:08:16.639
results
0:08:15.120,0:08:18.639
and at that point in time it’s written
0:08:16.639,0:08:21.680
in stone once they’re certified
0:08:18.639,0:08:25.199
okay so on january 6
0:08:21.680,0:08:27.440
that certification happens okay and it’s
0:08:25.199,0:08:30.240
really
0:08:27.440,0:08:32.719
a symbolic gesture because at that point
0:08:30.240,0:08:34.719
in time the results are already known
0:08:32.719,0:08:36.479
everybody knows who won the states of
0:08:34.719,0:08:38.719
certified you can’t change the results
0:08:36.479,0:08:41.680
at that point in time
0:08:38.719,0:08:42.880
leading up to this point there were
0:08:41.680,0:08:45.920
disputes
0:08:42.880,0:08:48.720
on the part of the trump campaign the
0:08:45.920,0:08:51.920
trump campaign thought that they won
0:08:48.720,0:08:53.519
they went to court they had a dozen or
0:08:51.920,0:08:56.080
more
0:08:53.519,0:08:57.839
lawsuits that they brought they demanded
0:08:56.080,0:09:00.480
recounts they got the recounts the
0:08:57.839,0:09:02.160
recounts didn’t change the election
0:09:00.480,0:09:03.920
most of the lawsuits with the exception
0:09:02.160,0:09:05.279
of i think one in pennsylvania had all
0:09:03.920,0:09:07.360
been thrown out of court because there
0:09:05.279,0:09:09.760
wasn’t sufficient evidence
0:09:07.360,0:09:12.080
because they were alleging voter fraud
0:09:09.760,0:09:15.440
they were alleging
0:09:12.080,0:09:17.760
voter machine tampering all kinds of
0:09:15.440,0:09:21.680
things and they failed to provide
0:09:17.760,0:09:23.760
a body of proof that stood up in court
0:09:21.680,0:09:25.200
and they they were well within their
0:09:23.760,0:09:27.760
their legal rights to
0:09:25.200,0:09:29.279
make all these challenges and demand the
0:09:27.760,0:09:30.080
recounts and all that stuff so there
0:09:29.279,0:09:33.600
wasn’t anything
0:09:30.080,0:09:33.600
unusual about that
0:09:33.680,0:09:37.279
but after all that and after all the
0:09:36.160,0:09:39.440
results came in
0:09:37.279,0:09:41.360
and everything basically proved that joe
0:09:39.440,0:09:44.480
biden had won the election
0:09:41.360,0:09:45.360
donald trump still disputed it and he
0:09:44.480,0:09:48.480
got his
0:09:45.360,0:09:51.600
followers worked up about this
0:09:48.480,0:09:54.640
so january 6
0:09:51.600,0:09:56.160
wednesday uh two weeks ago was really
0:09:54.640,0:09:58.720
the last step
0:09:56.160,0:10:00.000
in this process and there was at this
0:09:58.720,0:10:02.560
point in time nothing that could be done
0:10:00.000,0:10:04.959
to change the election
0:10:02.560,0:10:06.480
one of the things in this process of
0:10:04.959,0:10:08.800
certification
0:10:06.480,0:10:09.519
is the vice president who serves as the
0:10:08.800,0:10:13.360
president
0:10:09.519,0:10:14.640
of congress symbolically signs off on
0:10:13.360,0:10:16.720
this and certifies it
0:10:14.640,0:10:18.320
ah so one of the things that the
0:10:16.720,0:10:22.800
president was trying to do
0:10:18.320,0:10:26.000
was to get vice president pence
0:10:22.800,0:10:28.480
to not certify it
0:10:26.000,0:10:30.079
which was not within his legal power to
0:10:28.480,0:10:32.880
do so and
0:10:30.079,0:10:33.839
i don’t know if president trump didn’t
0:10:32.880,0:10:36.320
understand that
0:10:33.839,0:10:38.160
didn’t want to understand that wasn’t
0:10:36.320,0:10:39.760
advised correctly but
0:10:38.160,0:10:41.920
he was putting pressure on vice
0:10:39.760,0:10:43.600
president hence
0:10:41.920,0:10:45.040
to do something that he couldn’t do
0:10:43.600,0:10:48.480
because he was just there as a
0:10:45.040,0:10:49.279
symbolic gesture one of the things that
0:10:48.480,0:10:51.680
they could do
0:10:49.279,0:10:52.800
is that you could have senators who
0:10:51.680,0:10:56.320
disputed
0:10:52.800,0:10:57.680
results of specific states okay
0:10:56.320,0:10:59.680
and there was a number of states that
0:10:57.680,0:11:01.920
were in question arizona georgia
0:10:59.680,0:11:04.240
pennsylvania and so forth
0:11:01.920,0:11:06.160
so you had a number of senators
0:11:04.240,0:11:07.440
basically come out publicly beforehand
0:11:06.160,0:11:10.079
and say all right i’m gonna
0:11:07.440,0:11:11.360
protest this and there’s a process in
0:11:10.079,0:11:13.360
place where
0:11:11.360,0:11:15.120
if someone raises a protest to it
0:11:13.360,0:11:16.640
there’s a discussion they could discuss
0:11:15.120,0:11:19.839
it up to two hours
0:11:16.640,0:11:22.560
and then a vote is cast but because
0:11:19.839,0:11:24.240
the majority of republicans and
0:11:22.560,0:11:25.760
democrats have accepted the election
0:11:24.240,0:11:26.880
there was no way that a vote was going
0:11:25.760,0:11:30.079
to overturn
0:11:26.880,0:11:32.880
any of the state’s elections so it was a
0:11:30.079,0:11:32.880
delay tactic
0:11:33.120,0:11:39.440
so the morning of july 6 a january 6
0:11:36.399,0:11:40.959
before that process of certification
0:11:39.440,0:11:42.560
started
0:11:40.959,0:11:45.920
the president and his supporters held a
0:11:42.560,0:11:45.920
rally outside the white house
0:11:46.079,0:11:50.160
we still don’t know a lot about what
0:11:49.279,0:11:53.519
happened
0:11:50.160,0:11:54.639
in the interim but it seems
0:11:53.519,0:11:56.180
you know the president was still
0:11:54.639,0:11:57.440
refusing the results of the election
0:11:56.180,0:12:01.040
[Music]
0:11:57.440,0:12:02.399
and he was still alleging all these
0:12:01.040,0:12:04.000
false claims that the election was
0:12:02.399,0:12:05.920
stolen
0:12:04.000,0:12:07.839
that he had clearly won the election in
0:12:05.920,0:12:11.040
landslide which no evidence supported
0:12:07.839,0:12:13.040
that he did
0:12:11.040,0:12:14.160
so what he did was he had a bunch of
0:12:13.040,0:12:16.720
people speak his
0:12:14.160,0:12:18.560
personal lawyer rudy giuliani his kids
0:12:16.720,0:12:24.560
spoke and stuff
0:12:18.560,0:12:28.000
and they all had suggestive
0:12:24.560,0:12:30.160
language in their speeches
0:12:28.000,0:12:31.600
and i don’t mean you know foul language
0:12:30.160,0:12:31.839
or anything like that but the suggestion
0:12:31.600,0:12:34.480
of
0:12:31.839,0:12:36.000
language was you know one one comment
0:12:34.480,0:12:38.639
was something to be effective well we’ll
0:12:36.000,0:12:40.480
take the fight to you or we’ll we’ll
0:12:38.639,0:12:42.079
contest this in battle or something like
0:12:40.480,0:12:46.959
that it was
0:12:42.079,0:12:46.959
it was a lot of language that
0:12:47.360,0:12:52.800
people now after the fact are saying
0:12:49.600,0:12:55.680
incited violence to the point that
0:12:52.800,0:12:56.399
that donald trump got these people all
0:12:55.680,0:12:58.399
worked up
0:12:56.399,0:12:59.760
told them to go march on the capitol and
0:12:58.399,0:13:02.959
even suggested
0:12:59.760,0:13:05.920
i’ll be with you marching on the capitol
0:13:02.959,0:13:08.560
so after this rally all these people
0:13:05.920,0:13:11.279
wound up going down to the capitol
0:13:08.560,0:13:14.240
and there was a perimeter of fairly
0:13:11.279,0:13:16.560
flimsy security perimeter around it
0:13:14.240,0:13:18.560
that they breached and they eventually
0:13:16.560,0:13:20.720
wound up getting into the building
0:13:18.560,0:13:22.160
and they wound up damaging the building
0:13:20.720,0:13:24.320
and
0:13:22.160,0:13:25.519
there was some threats of violence there
0:13:24.320,0:13:29.120
were some people who were
0:13:25.519,0:13:30.800
violent we had a total of five people
0:13:29.120,0:13:33.519
wind up losing their lives so a lot of
0:13:30.800,0:13:36.880
stuff happened here
0:13:33.519,0:13:39.199
but what we saw
0:13:36.880,0:13:41.839
in this process was a progression
0:13:39.199,0:13:45.440
through those terms that we talked about
0:13:41.839,0:13:49.120
so it started out as a peaceful
0:13:45.440,0:13:51.600
protest or demonstration it moved into a
0:13:49.120,0:13:53.279
riot as it started to get violent
0:13:51.600,0:13:54.959
and then it got to the point where when
0:13:53.279,0:13:58.160
they penetrated
0:13:54.959,0:14:01.279
inside the building they were actively
0:13:58.160,0:14:02.079
trying to interfere with the peaceful
0:14:01.279,0:14:05.440
transfer of
0:14:02.079,0:14:07.120
power of the presidency
0:14:05.440,0:14:09.279
and it got to the point where even
0:14:07.120,0:14:11.120
senators and congressmen who were in
0:14:09.279,0:14:14.880
there had to be evacuated
0:14:11.120,0:14:17.920
for their safety and
0:14:14.880,0:14:20.240
a lot of this is attributed to what
0:14:17.920,0:14:23.760
donald trump had said immediately
0:14:20.240,0:14:26.079
prior to this he had made some very
0:14:23.760,0:14:28.839
inflammatory remarks about mike pence
0:14:26.079,0:14:30.320
insulting him and vilifying him to his
0:14:28.839,0:14:33.279
crowd
0:14:30.320,0:14:34.880
and then sent that crowd down to the
0:14:33.279,0:14:38.399
capitol building where he was
0:14:34.880,0:14:41.199
wow and mike pence was in there because
0:14:38.399,0:14:41.920
it was his job and you know his family
0:14:41.199,0:14:45.040
was
0:14:41.920,0:14:46.880
in attendance there too so his life was
0:14:45.040,0:14:48.560
really being threatened at this point in
0:14:46.880,0:14:50.240
time
0:14:48.560,0:14:52.079
there were people that had pipe bombs
0:14:50.240,0:14:55.120
there there were people that had
0:14:52.079,0:14:56.160
guns and weapons there were people that
0:14:55.120,0:14:59.040
had restraints
0:14:56.160,0:14:59.519
zip tied restraints and evidences now
0:14:59.040,0:15:03.760
come out
0:14:59.519,0:15:06.800
suggesting that some participants had
0:15:03.760,0:15:10.959
had gone in there with the intent of
0:15:06.800,0:15:13.199
capturing or killing members of congress
0:15:10.959,0:15:14.000
in an attempt to stop this peaceful
0:15:13.199,0:15:17.279
transfer
0:15:14.000,0:15:20.000
of power really so
0:15:17.279,0:15:21.839
that’s what happened at that time so
0:15:20.000,0:15:23.440
knowing all that and
0:15:21.839,0:15:25.040
and i didn’t cite any sources here
0:15:23.440,0:15:26.000
because a lot of the accounts that i
0:15:25.040,0:15:29.440
have here came from
0:15:26.000,0:15:32.320
multiple news sources cnn fox news
0:15:29.440,0:15:32.320
usa today
0:15:32.880,0:15:36.079
the information is readily available so
0:15:34.639,0:15:38.839
anyone can go out there and look it up
0:15:36.079,0:15:41.839
if they want to look it up
0:15:38.839,0:15:43.600
so based on all of that
0:15:41.839,0:15:45.279
what are your thoughts what was the
0:15:43.600,0:15:46.160
first thing that crossed your mind when
0:15:45.279,0:15:49.519
you saw this
0:15:46.160,0:15:51.279
this happening well um
0:15:49.519,0:15:52.880
although i didn’t entirely have any
0:15:51.279,0:15:56.160
background
0:15:52.880,0:15:58.320
um i remember that i was um
0:15:56.160,0:15:59.680
i think in my room i had been done with
0:15:58.320,0:16:02.880
school for the day
0:15:59.680,0:16:03.839
and mommy was in the studio and she
0:16:02.880,0:16:06.639
ended up coming
0:16:03.839,0:16:07.839
in and telling and telling me she was
0:16:06.639,0:16:11.519
kind
0:16:07.839,0:16:14.800
disappointed with the country and
0:16:11.519,0:16:18.000
um and told me about what happened and
0:16:14.800,0:16:21.600
later on when i learned more about it
0:16:18.000,0:16:25.839
i really got kind of scared and
0:16:21.600,0:16:25.839
kind of sad because like
0:16:26.000,0:16:29.839
this is really not what should be
0:16:29.040,0:16:33.440
happening
0:16:29.839,0:16:36.560
it’s really kind of dark and
0:16:33.440,0:16:38.880
i was i’ll admit i was
0:16:36.560,0:16:40.720
kind of scared by it and i really didn’t
0:16:38.880,0:16:42.880
want to pay too much attention from it
0:16:40.720,0:16:46.480
since i was just
0:16:42.880,0:16:47.120
horrified by it i tried to not watch the
0:16:46.480,0:16:50.160
news
0:16:47.120,0:16:51.360
as much as i could um but i knew about
0:16:50.160,0:16:55.120
it and
0:16:51.360,0:16:58.320
i knew about the danger everyone was in
0:16:55.120,0:17:01.680
and learning about like
0:16:58.320,0:17:05.679
afterwards when peop when like they
0:17:01.680,0:17:08.000
started when they ended up getting like
0:17:05.679,0:17:09.439
caught and they talked and they talked
0:17:08.000,0:17:12.240
about why they were doing it
0:17:09.439,0:17:14.000
like their reasoning wasn’t justifiable
0:17:12.240,0:17:16.839
in the slightest and
0:17:14.000,0:17:18.720
it made me kind of angry because these
0:17:16.839,0:17:22.079
people exist
0:17:18.720,0:17:24.400
and they just want it seems like they
0:17:22.079,0:17:27.439
just want to
0:17:24.400,0:17:29.919
basically burn down the
0:17:27.439,0:17:32.160
the government and start a new one on
0:17:29.919,0:17:34.480
their own
0:17:32.160,0:17:37.520
yeah and it’s it’s funny you mention it
0:17:34.480,0:17:40.320
in that context because
0:17:37.520,0:17:43.120
a lot of these people who consider
0:17:40.320,0:17:45.520
themselves supporters of donald trump
0:17:43.120,0:17:47.840
consider themselves patriots you know i
0:17:45.520,0:17:50.240
love my country i love my flag i’m a
0:17:47.840,0:17:51.679
patriot blah blah blah
0:17:50.240,0:17:53.520
and then they go and try to overthrow
0:17:51.679,0:17:55.760
the government which is quite contrary
0:17:53.520,0:17:58.960
to what you would expect a patriot to do
0:17:55.760,0:18:00.080
yeah so let’s take a little break
0:17:58.960,0:18:01.520
and we’ll come back and we’re going to
0:18:00.080,0:18:02.320
talk about what the outcome of those
0:18:01.520,0:18:04.930
events
0:18:02.320,0:18:11.509
are at this point in

0:19:15.440,0:19:20.880
welcome back we are talking uh
0:19:18.799,0:19:22.840
insurrection today which is kind of a
0:19:20.880,0:19:26.799
strange topic for us
0:19:22.840,0:19:28.080
yep but strange times i guess
0:19:26.799,0:19:30.880
i thought this was an important enough
0:19:28.080,0:19:34.160
topic that we kind of had to go over
0:19:30.880,0:19:38.080
so we’re talking what was the
0:19:34.160,0:19:39.600
outcome of the events of january 6.
0:19:38.080,0:19:41.919
and the immediate outcome was the
0:19:39.600,0:19:46.559
attempt to stop the certification
0:19:41.919,0:19:49.600
of the election results fail
0:19:46.559,0:19:50.480
so president-elect joe biden has been
0:19:49.600,0:19:52.640
certified
0:19:50.480,0:19:55.520
and he will be inaugurated and swore in
0:19:52.640,0:19:58.880
on january 20th
0:19:55.520,0:19:59.679
and another immediate thing that has to
0:19:58.880,0:20:02.240
be talked about
0:19:59.679,0:20:02.880
was five people lost their lives during
0:20:02.240,0:20:05.919
this
0:20:02.880,0:20:06.720
there were four protesters one of which
0:20:05.919,0:20:10.480
who was shot
0:20:06.720,0:20:14.080
as they were trying to breach the actual
0:20:10.480,0:20:16.000
ground the building of the capital
0:20:14.080,0:20:17.840
three others died after the fact from
0:20:16.000,0:20:20.080
medical complications and
0:20:17.840,0:20:21.919
one capital police officer passed away
0:20:20.080,0:20:24.960
during all this
0:20:21.919,0:20:28.080
now the capitol police are
0:20:24.960,0:20:30.559
the security force for the
0:20:28.080,0:20:31.440
senators the congressman and the grounds
0:20:30.559,0:20:34.400
of the capitol
0:20:31.440,0:20:35.760
okay there are regular police force
0:20:34.400,0:20:37.679
they’re armed they’re trained they’re
0:20:35.760,0:20:40.960
investigative
0:20:37.679,0:20:44.480
and it’s their job to maintain order and
0:20:40.960,0:20:48.000
and safety in the capital
0:20:44.480,0:20:50.480
they’re limited in their number though
0:20:48.000,0:20:52.159
anyone watched the videos of the
0:20:50.480,0:20:54.000
insurrection of the capital
0:20:52.159,0:20:55.440
you’ll know that they were easily
0:20:54.000,0:20:59.760
overwhelmed by the number of
0:20:55.440,0:20:59.760
protesters and rioters that showed up
0:20:59.919,0:21:03.600
so for these capitol police to stand
0:21:02.320,0:21:07.360
their ground and try to
0:21:03.600,0:21:10.080
evacuate the our elected officials and
0:21:07.360,0:21:11.679
keep them and their families safe it’s a
0:21:10.080,0:21:13.600
heroic act
0:21:11.679,0:21:15.039
you know when you have a few hundred
0:21:13.600,0:21:18.320
maybe police officers
0:21:15.039,0:21:19.679
on site versus thousands of angry
0:21:18.320,0:21:22.240
rioters who
0:21:19.679,0:21:23.760
after the fact we learned had weapons
0:21:22.240,0:21:24.960
and were violent
0:21:23.760,0:21:26.960
to the point that people were even
0:21:24.960,0:21:30.000
throwing fire extinguishers at
0:21:26.960,0:21:32.240
capitol police to hurt them
0:21:30.000,0:21:33.600
for these men to stand their ground and
0:21:32.240,0:21:36.159
and do their jobs
0:21:33.600,0:21:38.080
and protect the people that were their
0:21:36.159,0:21:41.600
responsibility
0:21:38.080,0:21:43.039
was the definition of heroism
0:21:41.600,0:21:45.600
to put your own life on the line to
0:21:43.039,0:21:47.440
protect others yeah
0:21:45.600,0:21:49.520
unfortunately one member of the capitol
0:21:47.440,0:21:52.000
police lost his life during that
0:21:49.520,0:21:52.000
struggle
0:21:52.240,0:21:56.240
another outcome is that many members of
0:21:54.559,0:21:57.760
the president’s own party have now
0:21:56.240,0:22:00.960
broken away from him
0:21:57.760,0:22:02.159
and are against him at this point in
0:22:00.960,0:22:05.600
time
0:22:02.159,0:22:08.480
so you have like some key republican
0:22:05.600,0:22:10.400
elected officials who aren’t behind the
0:22:08.480,0:22:12.559
the president anymore
0:22:10.400,0:22:14.880
what are your thoughts on on these
0:22:12.559,0:22:18.720
couple of outcomes
0:22:14.880,0:22:22.400
well i’m glad that the attempt
0:22:18.720,0:22:24.559
to stop the certification did fail um
0:22:22.400,0:22:26.240
i’m honestly really glad that it did
0:22:24.559,0:22:30.720
fail um
0:22:26.240,0:22:34.480
because just the app the fact that
0:22:30.720,0:22:37.520
it was all caused just to get
0:22:34.480,0:22:38.799
uh the president-elect to be certified
0:22:37.520,0:22:43.280
was
0:22:38.799,0:22:46.159
kind of dark and the fact that people
0:22:43.280,0:22:48.080
believed the lies that donald trump had
0:22:46.159,0:22:50.559
won the election
0:22:48.080,0:22:51.600
um and they ended up resorting to
0:22:50.559,0:22:54.799
violence
0:22:51.600,0:22:57.440
since there was no other way i mean
0:22:54.799,0:22:58.080
i’m just glad that they failed at this
0:22:57.440,0:23:01.919
point
0:22:58.080,0:23:06.159
yeah um also the five deaths
0:23:01.919,0:23:08.640
um i definitely think
0:23:06.159,0:23:09.280
that it shouldn’t have resulted in any
0:23:08.640,0:23:12.400
deaths
0:23:09.280,0:23:12.799
even if maybe some of the people who
0:23:12.400,0:23:15.039
were
0:23:12.799,0:23:16.480
writing might have deserved it i don’t
0:23:15.039,0:23:22.240
think anyone deserved
0:23:16.480,0:23:24.960
to die and it always kind of hurts when
0:23:22.240,0:23:26.720
when vi when these kinds of things who
0:23:24.960,0:23:28.000
start up that start out as peaceful
0:23:26.720,0:23:31.039
protests
0:23:28.000,0:23:32.799
end up ending people’s lives yeah and i
0:23:31.039,0:23:35.600
agree it is tragic
0:23:32.799,0:23:36.000
yeah so in addition to that there were a
0:23:35.600,0:23:38.080
number of
0:23:36.000,0:23:39.360
other things that happened that will
0:23:38.080,0:23:43.039
have longer lasting
0:23:39.360,0:23:44.559
impacts i think a number of businesses
0:23:43.039,0:23:46.320
that work with donald trump’s
0:23:44.559,0:23:48.880
organization
0:23:46.320,0:23:50.320
have broken away from him there was a
0:23:48.880,0:23:54.960
pga
0:23:50.320,0:23:57.760
tour that uses one of his
0:23:54.960,0:24:01.039
golf courses in bedminster new jersey
0:23:57.760,0:24:03.120
and they’ve taken that away from him
0:24:01.039,0:24:05.279
organizations that provide political
0:24:03.120,0:24:06.159
donations campaign donations to both
0:24:05.279,0:24:08.640
donald trump
0:24:06.159,0:24:09.679
and the republican party have now pulled
0:24:08.640,0:24:11.279
their support
0:24:09.679,0:24:12.640
so you’re hitting them in the pocketbook
0:24:11.279,0:24:14.799
where it’s going to hurt them probably
0:24:12.640,0:24:17.520
the most
0:24:14.799,0:24:18.559
there’s also going to be a huge security
0:24:17.520,0:24:21.679
presence
0:24:18.559,0:24:24.640
uh at the inauguration on the 20th
0:24:21.679,0:24:25.279
that makes sense uh yes very much so now
0:24:24.640,0:24:27.200
that the
0:24:25.279,0:24:29.200
inauguration itself is going to be much
0:24:27.200,0:24:32.880
smaller and
0:24:29.200,0:24:34.960
less um
0:24:32.880,0:24:36.080
festive i think than normal and that’s
0:24:34.960,0:24:38.799
largely because of the
0:24:36.080,0:24:40.480
pandemic but i think because of that
0:24:38.799,0:24:41.520
it’ll be a little bit easier to secure
0:24:40.480,0:24:43.120
so there’s going to be a
0:24:41.520,0:24:45.840
large contingent of national guard who
0:24:43.120,0:24:47.679
are already in washington
0:24:45.840,0:24:48.880
in fact there was a statistic that came
0:24:47.679,0:24:51.600
out so
0:24:48.880,0:24:52.720
yesterday that said there’s more nash
0:24:51.600,0:24:55.200
there’s more u.s
0:24:52.720,0:24:57.520
troops in washington dc than there are
0:24:55.200,0:25:00.559
in afghanistan and iraq right now
0:24:57.520,0:25:04.240
wow which
0:25:00.559,0:25:07.760
is a alarming sign of the times i think
0:25:04.240,0:25:09.760
yeah that we’ve gotten to that point
0:25:07.760,0:25:11.120
uh local police agencies are also going
0:25:09.760,0:25:13.120
to be involved
0:25:11.120,0:25:15.200
as well as other government agencies
0:25:13.120,0:25:16.799
like the fbi and homeland security and
0:25:15.200,0:25:18.480
such so there’s going to be a
0:25:16.799,0:25:20.799
large securing presence there to make
0:25:18.480,0:25:22.000
sure that there isn’t any violence
0:25:20.799,0:25:24.159
a lot of the people that have been
0:25:22.000,0:25:27.440
identified from the
0:25:24.159,0:25:27.840
protest from the interaction have either
0:25:27.440,0:25:31.120
been
0:25:27.840,0:25:31.600
arraigned arrested charged many of them
0:25:31.120,0:25:34.400
have
0:25:31.600,0:25:35.919
added to the no-fly list so they won’t
0:25:34.400,0:25:37.039
be able to travel during the time of the
0:25:35.919,0:25:39.360
inauguration
0:25:37.039,0:25:39.360
okay
0:25:40.320,0:25:44.000
and a lot of people in president trump’s
0:25:42.159,0:25:46.080
organization have resigned some key
0:25:44.000,0:25:48.240
cabinet members so his government’s kind
0:25:46.080,0:25:49.120
of falling apart right now with his last
0:25:48.240,0:25:52.400
few days in
0:25:49.120,0:25:52.400
office yep
0:25:52.880,0:25:56.240
what are your thoughts on on that the
0:25:54.960,0:25:57.679
fact that we have to have that kind of
0:25:56.240,0:26:00.640
security presence in
0:25:57.679,0:26:01.600
in washington dc for a new president
0:26:00.640,0:26:05.120
well like you said
0:26:01.600,0:26:06.320
it is kind of sad because we’ve never
0:26:05.120,0:26:10.799
really had to have
0:26:06.320,0:26:15.039
so much security during these ins
0:26:10.799,0:26:18.640
during during you know
0:26:15.039,0:26:21.120
inauguration inaugurations yes um
0:26:18.640,0:26:21.679
it’s really kind of sad because the fact
0:26:21.120,0:26:25.120
that
0:26:21.679,0:26:26.320
the violence just from him being
0:26:25.120,0:26:29.440
certified
0:26:26.320,0:26:31.760
joe biden being certified was
0:26:29.440,0:26:32.720
honestly really dark and imagined what
0:26:31.760,0:26:35.679
would happen
0:26:32.720,0:26:36.000
when once he’s sworn into office which
0:26:35.679,0:26:38.000
is
0:26:36.000,0:26:40.159
kind of why there’s so much security and
0:26:38.000,0:26:42.240
it is really sad that
0:26:40.159,0:26:43.919
there’s going to be more there’s going
0:26:42.240,0:26:46.559
to be more agents in
0:26:43.919,0:26:48.080
washington than there are in places
0:26:46.559,0:26:51.120
where
0:26:48.080,0:26:54.159
there’s not much safety going on and
0:26:51.120,0:26:56.880
it’s just kind of sad to think about it
0:26:54.159,0:26:57.679
that is that is kind of you know it’s
0:26:56.880,0:27:00.720
scary
0:26:57.679,0:27:02.159
on one side and it’s kind of reassuring
0:27:00.720,0:27:03.600
on the other that
0:27:02.159,0:27:05.279
our government was strong enough to
0:27:03.600,0:27:08.880
withstand this yeah
0:27:05.279,0:27:10.400
and uh you know i think it took everyone
0:27:08.880,0:27:13.840
by surprise
0:27:10.400,0:27:17.039
and you know i it’s hard for me to blame
0:27:13.840,0:27:18.640
donald trump for the insurrection itself
0:27:17.039,0:27:20.880
because i don’t think he fully
0:27:18.640,0:27:22.240
understood the effect that he had on his
0:27:20.880,0:27:26.080
supporters
0:27:22.240,0:27:29.200
and i think what happened on january 6
0:27:26.080,0:27:30.960
was something that he never thought was
0:27:29.200,0:27:32.480
going to happen never even considered
0:27:30.960,0:27:34.399
was going to happen i think he figured
0:27:32.480,0:27:38.559
people would go down there
0:27:34.399,0:27:42.480
they’d protest they’d make a ruckus
0:27:38.559,0:27:44.880
and he would try to delay the inevitable
0:27:42.480,0:27:46.559
and i don’t think he ever certainly not
0:27:44.880,0:27:48.399
intentionally planned on causing an
0:27:46.559,0:27:51.840
insurrection but
0:27:48.399,0:27:51.840
i think that speaks to his
0:27:53.279,0:27:58.559
lack of understanding of his his support
0:27:57.039,0:28:00.640
base
0:27:58.559,0:28:01.600
these you know a lot of the people that
0:28:00.640,0:28:04.880
support him
0:28:01.600,0:28:06.720
have have proven to be violent
0:28:04.880,0:28:08.559
over the past four years they’ve proven
0:28:06.720,0:28:10.159
to be disruptive
0:28:08.559,0:28:12.000
they just haven’t done it on the scale
0:28:10.159,0:28:14.399
like this and
0:28:12.000,0:28:16.240
this looks like it was a very organized
0:28:14.399,0:28:20.159
attempt to disrupt government
0:28:16.240,0:28:22.720
yeah as a result
0:28:20.159,0:28:23.600
donald trump has become the first
0:28:22.720,0:28:26.559
president
0:28:23.600,0:28:28.559
to be impeached twice so the house of
0:28:26.559,0:28:32.000
representatives did
0:28:28.559,0:28:32.880
pass a vote a bipartisan vote meaning
0:28:32.000,0:28:36.000
both
0:28:32.880,0:28:37.279
parties their democrats and support from
0:28:36.000,0:28:40.799
republicans
0:28:37.279,0:28:42.000
voted to impeach trump and they haven’t
0:28:40.799,0:28:44.559
sent those charges
0:28:42.000,0:28:45.279
up to the senate yet they will there
0:28:44.559,0:28:48.960
will be a
0:28:45.279,0:28:51.530
hearing you know an impeachment hearing
0:28:48.960,0:28:54.599
probably after joe biden is sworn in
0:28:51.530,0:28:54.599
[Music]
0:28:55.120,0:28:58.240
so there’s a very real possibility that
0:28:56.960,0:29:03.279
donald trump could be the first
0:28:58.240,0:29:05.279
president impeached for insurrection
0:29:03.279,0:29:08.080
and a lot of things can happen with that
0:29:05.279,0:29:10.559
there’s nothing that’s automatic but
0:29:08.080,0:29:12.399
he could lose his pension from the job
0:29:10.559,0:29:13.850
he could lose his
0:29:12.399,0:29:16.320
secret service protection
0:29:13.850,0:29:18.399
[Music]
0:29:16.320,0:29:20.000
he could be barred from running for
0:29:18.399,0:29:21.520
office again
0:29:20.000,0:29:23.919
a lot of that stuff is still up in the
0:29:21.520,0:29:26.559
air as far as what the penalties are if
0:29:23.919,0:29:28.880
he’s convicted
0:29:26.559,0:29:30.559
but the problem’s not over yet though
0:29:28.880,0:29:32.559
because there’s still an ongoing threat
0:29:30.559,0:29:34.720
of violence not just in washington
0:29:32.559,0:29:36.000
but around the country the fbi released
0:29:34.720,0:29:38.159
information
0:29:36.000,0:29:40.159
saying that there are violent protests
0:29:38.159,0:29:41.600
planned for the capitals of all 50
0:29:40.159,0:29:43.360
states
0:29:41.600,0:29:45.520
so even here in new jersey they’re
0:29:43.360,0:29:48.320
ramping up security in trenton
0:29:45.520,0:29:49.600
our state capitol to deal with any mobs
0:29:48.320,0:29:52.720
like this
0:29:49.600,0:29:55.120
unfortunately we’re pretty far away from
0:29:52.720,0:29:56.880
the state capitals that surround us so
0:29:55.120,0:29:58.159
chances of us having to deal with that
0:29:56.880,0:30:01.600
kind of
0:29:58.159,0:30:04.640
uh violence or uh commotion
0:30:01.600,0:30:05.120
is relatively low but how does that make
0:30:04.640,0:30:08.000
you feel
0:30:05.120,0:30:10.240
knowing that this is still an ongoing
0:30:08.000,0:30:12.080
thing that it didn’t just end on january
0:30:10.240,0:30:15.520
6.
0:30:12.080,0:30:18.960
well it’s definitely not
0:30:15.520,0:30:21.840
good in the slightest and in fact it’s
0:30:18.960,0:30:22.559
kind of infuriating the fact that people
0:30:21.840,0:30:25.679
still
0:30:22.559,0:30:28.720
want to mess up the election
0:30:25.679,0:30:30.480
and the fact that they still they still
0:30:28.720,0:30:32.240
think that violence will solve
0:30:30.480,0:30:36.640
everything
0:30:32.240,0:30:40.159
and it just
0:30:36.640,0:30:43.679
ugh kind of hard to believe
0:30:40.159,0:30:46.480
in some ways so donald trump has been
0:30:43.679,0:30:48.960
probably the most prolific
0:30:46.480,0:30:50.240
president on social media that we’ve
0:30:48.960,0:30:53.360
ever had
0:30:50.240,0:30:55.440
most of his administration has been
0:30:53.360,0:30:58.640
administered through twitter which
0:30:55.440,0:31:00.799
seemed to be his medium of choice
0:30:58.640,0:31:02.559
in the wake of all this he’s basically
0:31:00.799,0:31:03.760
been banned from everything i mean to
0:31:02.559,0:31:05.120
the point that he was banned from
0:31:03.760,0:31:06.640
pinterest too which
0:31:05.120,0:31:09.679
wow i mean i don’t know how you get
0:31:06.640,0:31:09.679
banned from pinterest but
0:31:09.840,0:31:13.679
so he doesn’t have this outlet he had
0:31:12.159,0:31:16.240
been using these outlets
0:31:13.679,0:31:18.880
facebook and twitter and and other
0:31:16.240,0:31:21.919
social media outlets
0:31:18.880,0:31:24.960
to pass on these these
0:31:21.919,0:31:27.200
carefully worded messages that would
0:31:24.960,0:31:30.960
rile up his supporters
0:31:27.200,0:31:32.240
but largely keep him within the letter
0:31:30.960,0:31:34.320
of the law
0:31:32.240,0:31:36.559
like free speech only gets you so far
0:31:34.320,0:31:39.039
yeah
0:31:36.559,0:31:40.000
you can’t you know stand up in a crowded
0:31:39.039,0:31:41.919
theater and scream
0:31:40.000,0:31:44.000
fire if there isn’t a fire because
0:31:41.919,0:31:47.360
you’re going to get people hurt
0:31:44.000,0:31:49.200
and a lot of people use that analogy to
0:31:47.360,0:31:50.399
kind of parallel with some of the things
0:31:49.200,0:31:52.320
that that
0:31:50.399,0:31:53.919
donald trump has done on twitter and
0:31:52.320,0:31:55.679
other outlets
0:31:53.919,0:31:58.880
so they’ve taken that away from him too
0:31:55.679,0:31:58.880
that’s another consequence
0:31:59.279,0:32:02.399
donald trump’s also begun to soften his
0:32:01.279,0:32:05.519
language
0:32:02.399,0:32:08.000
and curb his
0:32:05.519,0:32:09.519
tendency to rile his people up and i
0:32:08.000,0:32:10.559
think a lot of that has to do with
0:32:09.519,0:32:14.559
people around him
0:32:10.559,0:32:16.240
trying to bring him in line uh he’s also
0:32:14.559,0:32:19.519
stated he’s not going to attend
0:32:16.240,0:32:22.559
the swearing-in ceremony so it’s fairly
0:32:19.519,0:32:25.440
traditional for the seating president um
0:32:22.559,0:32:27.440
on a inauguration day typically what
0:32:25.440,0:32:31.440
happens is
0:32:27.440,0:32:33.600
the president-elect and the president
0:32:31.440,0:32:36.080
will usually meet at the white house and
0:32:33.600,0:32:38.399
have a a brief meeting there
0:32:36.080,0:32:40.159
they might have breakfast they might not
0:32:38.399,0:32:42.240
and then what they’ll do is they’ll
0:32:40.159,0:32:45.039
get in the car together they go off to
0:32:42.240,0:32:46.720
the inauguration
0:32:45.039,0:32:48.159
they’re both in attendance obviously at
0:32:46.720,0:32:50.640
the inauguration
0:32:48.159,0:32:52.000
and then the president-elect returns to
0:32:50.640,0:32:53.840
the white house
0:32:52.000,0:32:56.960
he’s now the president and the former
0:32:53.840,0:32:58.960
president goes off and does his thing
0:32:56.960,0:33:01.039
and one of the traditions also is for
0:32:58.960,0:33:04.240
the former president to leave a
0:33:01.039,0:33:06.000
a letter of passing on some words of
0:33:04.240,0:33:08.080
wisdom
0:33:06.000,0:33:09.360
and it seems donald trump is going to
0:33:08.080,0:33:12.799
avoid
0:33:09.360,0:33:16.000
all of that the last account that i saw
0:33:12.799,0:33:17.279
said he’s going to be flying on air
0:33:16.000,0:33:19.600
force one
0:33:17.279,0:33:22.000
in the morning down to mar-a-lago where
0:33:19.600,0:33:25.039
his residence is
0:33:22.000,0:33:26.320
because he did not want to ask joe biden
0:33:25.039,0:33:29.200
to use the jet to
0:33:26.320,0:33:33.279
to head home nor did he want to leave
0:33:29.200,0:33:33.279
washington as a former president
0:33:33.679,0:33:39.440
so as a result he’s not going to be
0:33:36.840,0:33:41.360
there and he’ll be out of the picture
0:33:39.440,0:33:43.120
they’ve already started moving all of
0:33:41.360,0:33:44.640
his staff out
0:33:43.120,0:33:46.960
there were some pictures in the news
0:33:44.640,0:33:48.559
yesterday about that
0:33:46.960,0:33:50.880
um what do you think about that do you
0:33:48.559,0:33:54.000
think that kind of makes him a
0:33:50.880,0:33:55.519
sore loser or do you think it’s
0:33:54.000,0:33:56.720
like what what do you what’s your
0:33:55.519,0:33:57.600
mindset with that what do you what do
0:33:56.720,0:33:59.519
you think he’s
0:33:57.600,0:34:00.880
his thoughts are i mean the fact that
0:33:59.519,0:34:03.679
he’s breaking
0:34:00.880,0:34:04.480
a lot of the old traditions that used to
0:34:03.679,0:34:06.880
happen
0:34:04.480,0:34:08.560
and the fact that he’s not going to try
0:34:06.880,0:34:11.440
and make peace with joe biden
0:34:08.560,0:34:12.879
is kind of immature of him i’m not going
0:34:11.440,0:34:15.040
to lie
0:34:12.879,0:34:16.079
yeah i would agree i think it’s
0:34:15.040,0:34:19.440
disappointing that
0:34:16.079,0:34:20.960
that we’re kind of throwing away so many
0:34:19.440,0:34:22.879
years of tradition because
0:34:20.960,0:34:24.560
he doesn’t want to accept the results
0:34:22.879,0:34:26.560
yeah
0:34:24.560,0:34:28.639
so when he gets out of office on the
0:34:26.560,0:34:30.879
20th because
0:34:28.639,0:34:33.839
transfer of power happens at noon on
0:34:30.879,0:34:35.839
january 20th
0:34:33.839,0:34:38.000
still be facing his impeachment charges
0:34:35.839,0:34:41.520
which could have
0:34:38.000,0:34:43.200
federal consequences to it but he’s also
0:34:41.520,0:34:45.919
facing another
0:34:43.200,0:34:48.000
set of legal challenges with his income
0:34:45.919,0:34:51.119
tax and some
0:34:48.000,0:34:51.679
business practice issues and a bunch of
0:34:51.119,0:34:53.359
other things
0:34:51.679,0:34:55.200
at the state level so there’s a number
0:34:53.359,0:34:57.920
of uh
0:34:55.200,0:35:02.079
lawsuits that are swirling around donald
0:34:57.920,0:35:03.760
trump when he gets out of office
0:35:02.079,0:35:07.920
there’s been over a hundred arrests so
0:35:03.760,0:35:07.920
far from the rioters
0:35:08.480,0:35:15.520
which doesn’t strike me as odd because
0:35:11.920,0:35:16.160
these people were brazen enough to do
0:35:15.520,0:35:18.160
these things
0:35:16.160,0:35:19.839
with cameras rolling i mean some of
0:35:18.160,0:35:22.560
these people waved to the cameras and
0:35:19.839,0:35:25.040
posed for the cameras and
0:35:22.560,0:35:26.800
and i have to wonder you know i’ve
0:35:25.040,0:35:29.839
struggled to put myself in the mindset
0:35:26.800,0:35:31.440
of what one of these rioters was like
0:35:29.839,0:35:32.800
when you know you’re doing something
0:35:31.440,0:35:34.560
wrong you know you’re doing something
0:35:32.800,0:35:35.839
illegal and yet you’re trying to show
0:35:34.560,0:35:40.079
off on the camera
0:35:35.839,0:35:42.960
as if it’s a reality tv show
0:35:40.079,0:35:45.280
yeah what are your thoughts on that when
0:35:42.960,0:35:45.760
and and what would have riled these
0:35:45.280,0:35:49.599
people
0:35:45.760,0:35:52.960
up to go to the extreme that they did
0:35:49.599,0:35:57.680
just your thoughts and opinions on that
0:35:52.960,0:36:01.520
well i’ve been thinking about it and
0:35:57.680,0:36:02.640
it’s kind of a message about how bad
0:36:01.520,0:36:05.920
society
0:36:02.640,0:36:08.800
about how bad modern society is
0:36:05.920,0:36:09.760
like they don’t feel like they’re doing
0:36:08.800,0:36:11.839
anything wrong
0:36:09.760,0:36:13.359
they feel like like you said before they
0:36:11.839,0:36:15.680
feel like they’re patriots
0:36:13.359,0:36:16.400
they’re with the country they’re going
0:36:15.680,0:36:19.680
they’re doing
0:36:16.400,0:36:20.800
something that the paid that people that
0:36:19.680,0:36:22.960
people would
0:36:20.800,0:36:24.000
that people who want the country to
0:36:22.960,0:36:27.119
succeed would do
0:36:24.000,0:36:30.480
yet it’s the complete opposite
0:36:27.119,0:36:33.040
and the fact that they’re like like
0:36:30.480,0:36:35.599
showing off in front of the cameras just
0:36:33.040,0:36:37.440
makes them seem entirely immature and
0:36:35.599,0:36:39.440
the fact that
0:36:37.440,0:36:42.079
they don’t care if they’re causing
0:36:39.440,0:36:44.240
violence they think it’s fun
0:36:42.079,0:36:45.359
they trying to show off they’re trying
0:36:44.240,0:36:48.640
to make it seem
0:36:45.359,0:36:52.000
cool but it’s not
0:36:48.640,0:36:54.560
and it’s just like a bad it’s just like
0:36:52.000,0:36:58.160
a bad metaphor for our society now
0:36:54.560,0:37:00.640
like like people think
0:36:58.160,0:37:02.480
like when people do bad things they
0:37:00.640,0:37:04.400
think it’s cool they want to make other
0:37:02.480,0:37:05.200
people think it’s cool when it’s really
0:37:04.400,0:37:08.079
not
0:37:05.200,0:37:11.119
when you think about it it’s especially
0:37:08.079,0:37:14.320
when i try to put myself in their shoes
0:37:11.119,0:37:14.960
nothing any one could do would ever make
0:37:14.320,0:37:18.320
me be
0:37:14.960,0:37:20.800
like if i was going to do something bad
0:37:18.320,0:37:22.000
i wasn’t going to try and show off and
0:37:20.800,0:37:24.800
say oh hey this
0:37:22.000,0:37:26.400
is good maybe i’d say that to myself
0:37:24.800,0:37:29.680
even though i know i’d be down
0:37:26.400,0:37:30.720
i know i’d be lying but i’d never have
0:37:29.680,0:37:33.760
the gold
0:37:30.720,0:37:34.320
i would never have the ability to show
0:37:33.760,0:37:37.359
off
0:37:34.320,0:37:38.480
and make it seem as though oh it’s just
0:37:37.359,0:37:42.480
something that we
0:37:38.480,0:37:45.200
we’re gonna do it’s not that bad
0:37:42.480,0:37:46.880
i just can’t i agree and i’ve had a
0:37:45.200,0:37:48.480
difficult time wrapping my head around
0:37:46.880,0:37:50.640
it too
0:37:48.480,0:37:51.680
let’s take a quick break when we come
0:37:50.640,0:37:53.040
back
0:37:51.680,0:37:55.520

can help their teens cope with
0:37:55.520,0:38:05.410
stuff like this and and how to talk to

0:39:09.680,0:39:14.240
welcome back this week we are talking
0:39:11.599,0:39:17.359
about the insurrection
0:39:14.240,0:39:19.359
on january 6 at the capitol in
0:39:17.359,0:39:22.400
washington dc
0:39:19.359,0:39:23.680
talking about uh what happened what the
0:39:22.400,0:39:24.800
aftermath was and
0:39:23.680,0:39:27.599
we’re going to talk a little bit about
0:39:24.800,0:39:29.839
how parents can help their teens
0:39:27.599,0:39:30.720
cope with the the insurrection and
0:39:29.839,0:39:33.119
events sort of
0:39:30.720,0:39:35.359
of this nature so the first thing that
0:39:33.119,0:39:37.359
we talk about here is
0:39:35.359,0:39:39.280
give your children the space to ask
0:39:37.359,0:39:40.560
questions you need to have an open
0:39:39.280,0:39:42.320
dialogue
0:39:40.560,0:39:45.520
you need to create a safe space for your
0:39:42.320,0:39:47.839
kids to discuss these things
0:39:45.520,0:39:48.720
and for the parents that that means
0:39:47.839,0:39:51.440
being calm
0:39:48.720,0:39:52.480
in the discussion don’t be judgmental
0:39:51.440,0:39:54.320
and
0:39:52.480,0:39:56.000
you have to approach the conversation
0:39:54.320,0:39:58.320
with your listening hat on so to
0:39:56.000,0:39:59.119
speak kinda like we’re doing here today
0:39:58.320,0:40:02.000
you know it’s
0:39:59.119,0:40:04.079
everyone develops their own feelings
0:40:02.000,0:40:04.880
when things like this happen and a lot
0:40:04.079,0:40:08.079
of times
0:40:04.880,0:40:11.839
you just need that safe space to
0:40:08.079,0:40:11.839
to discuss those feelings
0:40:12.319,0:40:16.640
how do you feel about this deep down
0:40:14.480,0:40:18.560
inside what do you think
0:40:16.640,0:40:19.839
this means what do you think the
0:40:18.560,0:40:23.119
implications are
0:40:19.839,0:40:24.960
for you for the country and everyone
0:40:23.119,0:40:27.359
moving forward
0:40:24.960,0:40:29.440
well i definitely feel as though this
0:40:27.359,0:40:30.560
day is not going to be forgotten anytime
0:40:29.440,0:40:32.560
soon
0:40:30.560,0:40:34.640
might go it might even go down in
0:40:32.560,0:40:38.240
history who knows
0:40:34.640,0:40:41.520
because well it’s extremely major
0:40:38.240,0:40:44.720
and i definitely think that
0:40:41.520,0:40:47.839
this transition of presidency is
0:40:44.720,0:40:49.839
going to be probably one of the more the
0:40:47.839,0:40:51.680
more infamous ones
0:40:49.839,0:40:53.119
yeah and i agree and having lived
0:40:51.680,0:40:55.760
through some
0:40:53.119,0:40:57.200
significant historical events myself you
0:40:55.760,0:41:00.240
know the
0:40:57.200,0:41:02.319
the i remember the challenger
0:41:00.240,0:41:03.920
blowing up on my birthday you know i
0:41:02.319,0:41:08.240
remember
0:41:03.920,0:41:11.119
9 11. there are there is certain
0:41:08.240,0:41:14.000
gravitas that’s associated with
0:41:11.119,0:41:16.000
significant historical events
0:41:14.000,0:41:17.040
where they become footnotes in history
0:41:16.000,0:41:19.839
and
0:41:17.040,0:41:22.800
the world sort of pivots around those
0:41:19.839,0:41:26.400
and it changes the world for everyone
0:41:22.800,0:41:29.680
and i think this particular event is
0:41:26.400,0:41:31.520
going to be one of those moving forward
0:41:29.680,0:41:34.240
the next thing we talk about is limiting
0:41:31.520,0:41:36.400
your media exposure
0:41:34.240,0:41:37.839
and that’s really based on the age of
0:41:36.400,0:41:40.000
your child
0:41:37.839,0:41:41.920
you know there can be a lot of tension
0:41:40.000,0:41:44.319
between shielding your child from
0:41:41.920,0:41:47.200
real life exposure and too much exposure
0:41:44.319,0:41:49.680
a lot of parents have that conflict
0:41:47.200,0:41:51.839
but by limiting your media exposure and
0:41:49.680,0:41:55.040
your social media exposure you can avoid
0:41:51.839,0:41:59.119
that flood of information
0:41:55.040,0:42:01.520
that it depends on the source
0:41:59.119,0:42:03.440
how accurate and true that information
0:42:01.520,0:42:05.920
is
0:42:03.440,0:42:07.920
and and teens and kids don’t always have
0:42:05.920,0:42:09.119
the capacity or the time or the
0:42:07.920,0:42:11.040
attention
0:42:09.119,0:42:13.359
to sift through multiple pieces of
0:42:11.040,0:42:15.599
information to find that truth
0:42:13.359,0:42:19.599
so by limiting that truth the parents at
0:42:15.599,0:42:21.200
least can present a unified front
0:42:19.599,0:42:23.280
and the other concern is that children
0:42:21.200,0:42:26.319
tend to emulate what they see
0:42:23.280,0:42:29.440
and you really don’t want kids seeing
0:42:26.319,0:42:30.480
what these rioters did and thinking that
0:42:29.440,0:42:32.880
it’s okay
0:42:30.480,0:42:33.760
to do that sort of thing yeah like how
0:42:32.880,0:42:36.400
they make it
0:42:33.760,0:42:38.240
seem yeah like i mentioned before
0:42:36.400,0:42:40.480
exactly
0:42:38.240,0:42:40.480
so
0:42:41.680,0:42:46.720
talk together with your kids explain it
0:42:45.040,0:42:48.480
to them the best you can try to be
0:42:46.720,0:42:51.760
unbiased about it
0:42:48.480,0:42:54.800
present the facts as they are which is
0:42:51.760,0:42:56.800
largely what we try to do here today
0:42:54.800,0:42:59.680
and then you know the next obvious thing
0:42:56.800,0:43:02.080
is to reassure them that they’re safe
0:42:59.680,0:43:03.359
you know for us washington dc is
0:43:02.080,0:43:05.760
[Music]
0:43:03.359,0:43:08.319
a long ways away you know we’re in new
0:43:05.760,0:43:10.160
jersey so it’s not too far but
0:43:08.319,0:43:12.480
it’s far enough that riots aren’t going
0:43:10.160,0:43:16.560
to spill over into our streets here
0:43:12.480,0:43:17.920
hopefully but seeing things like this
0:43:16.560,0:43:21.280
can be scary
0:43:17.920,0:43:23.760
you know it’s the thought of of
0:43:21.280,0:43:25.520
your government being taken down you
0:43:23.760,0:43:26.079
know we see stuff like this on the news
0:43:25.520,0:43:28.160
but it’s
0:43:26.079,0:43:29.520
far away it’s in third world countries
0:43:28.160,0:43:32.480
in latin america
0:43:29.520,0:43:34.160
or africa or something like that where
0:43:32.480,0:43:36.079
you have military coups and
0:43:34.160,0:43:37.920
and people are being dragged into the
0:43:36.079,0:43:41.440
streets and violence and
0:43:37.920,0:43:42.880
all that scary stuff and when you see it
0:43:41.440,0:43:45.760
happening on your own
0:43:42.880,0:43:47.359
city streets and your own capital it’s
0:43:45.760,0:43:48.640
kind of alarming isn’t it what are your
0:43:47.359,0:43:52.079
thoughts on that
0:43:48.640,0:43:52.960
yeah i definitely say like although it’s
0:43:52.079,0:43:55.520
scary
0:43:52.960,0:43:57.359
when it happens in other third world
0:43:55.520,0:43:59.280
third world countries
0:43:57.359,0:44:01.040
you know at least it might not spill
0:43:59.280,0:44:03.599
over towards you
0:44:01.040,0:44:04.720
but i i can’t imagine what would happen
0:44:03.599,0:44:08.319
when the people
0:44:04.720,0:44:11.040
on january 6 at washington dc
0:44:08.319,0:44:12.160
knew the capital saw what was happening
0:44:11.040,0:44:15.040
and
0:44:12.160,0:44:16.079
were around and just saw the violence
0:44:15.040,0:44:19.200
and just
0:44:16.079,0:44:22.319
the horror of it yeah
0:44:19.200,0:44:23.119
yeah so parents need to be transparent
0:44:22.319,0:44:25.920
and honest
0:44:23.119,0:44:26.960
you know don’t sugarcoat what’s going on
0:44:25.920,0:44:28.640
here but
0:44:26.960,0:44:30.720
you don’t necessarily have to go into
0:44:28.640,0:44:32.800
the grueling detail we talked about some
0:44:30.720,0:44:34.960
stuff in here that was
0:44:32.800,0:44:37.680
graphic to a certain extent about the
0:44:34.960,0:44:39.280
deaths of the people that were involved
0:44:37.680,0:44:41.839
you might not need to go into that level
0:44:39.280,0:44:43.680
of detail with your kids
0:44:41.839,0:44:45.440
and in some cases it’s better to say
0:44:43.680,0:44:49.200
nothing than to try
0:44:45.440,0:44:53.040
to be vague and leave
0:44:49.200,0:44:54.480
your kids confused but kids can tell
0:44:53.040,0:44:58.240
when you’re not being honest
0:44:54.480,0:45:01.599
yeah and and times like this you need to
0:44:58.240,0:45:05.680
have that
0:45:01.599,0:45:07.280
authority of honesty
0:45:05.680,0:45:10.319
you need to have that credibility that
0:45:07.280,0:45:10.319
honesty presents
0:45:10.480,0:45:13.680
and the other thing is talk about bad
0:45:12.400,0:45:16.880
actions not bad
0:45:13.680,0:45:18.960
people people
0:45:16.880,0:45:20.400
can do bad things but it doesn’t make
0:45:18.960,0:45:23.200
them bad people
0:45:20.400,0:45:25.440
yeah labeling people is bad or good can
0:45:23.200,0:45:27.520
be confusing
0:45:25.440,0:45:29.520
talking about the actions and behaviors
0:45:27.520,0:45:32.400
can help to highlight
0:45:29.520,0:45:33.760
what you do and don’t condone without
0:45:32.400,0:45:36.319
confusing your children
0:45:33.760,0:45:37.119
yeah so you know we talked about
0:45:36.319,0:45:40.240
protests
0:45:37.119,0:45:42.319
protests are okay it’s it’s a good thing
0:45:40.240,0:45:44.640
in fact we encourage you to protest
0:45:42.319,0:45:46.800
things that you think are wrong or need
0:45:44.640,0:45:48.640
to be changed
0:45:46.800,0:45:50.880
but when those protests turn violent
0:45:48.640,0:45:52.319
they turn into riots that’s where you’ve
0:45:50.880,0:45:54.079
crossed the line that’s where you have
0:45:52.319,0:45:57.119
to back off and you have to not be
0:45:54.079,0:45:57.119
associated with that
0:45:58.319,0:46:03.119
highlight the helpers we kind of did
0:46:01.520,0:46:04.400
that when we talked about our capitol
0:46:03.119,0:46:06.400
police here
0:46:04.400,0:46:08.160
yep there’s typically a lot of helpers
0:46:06.400,0:46:09.760
during times of crisis and highlighting
0:46:08.160,0:46:12.560
them can help instill a hope
0:46:09.760,0:46:14.079
in your child it also helps keep the
0:46:12.560,0:46:16.079
balance that
0:46:14.079,0:46:17.920
your child’s not left with only negative
0:46:16.079,0:46:19.520
memories of the situation
0:46:17.920,0:46:22.160
there are people there who have who
0:46:19.520,0:46:25.200
stood up who became heroes
0:46:22.160,0:46:26.839
who defended other people
0:46:25.200,0:46:29.520
the republicans there were 10
0:46:26.839,0:46:31.040
republicans in congress who voted for
0:46:29.520,0:46:33.440
impeachment because they
0:46:31.040,0:46:35.520
thought that the president crossed the
0:46:33.440,0:46:38.319
line and went too far
0:46:35.520,0:46:40.839
it took a tremendous amount of courage
0:46:38.319,0:46:43.440
for those 10 republicans to stand up
0:46:40.839,0:46:45.119
against who was really a popular
0:46:43.440,0:46:46.319
president in their party and a very
0:46:45.119,0:46:48.720
powerful president
0:46:46.319,0:46:50.079
it took real courage to stand up to them
0:46:48.720,0:46:52.800
and vote
0:46:50.079,0:46:54.319
to stop the madness you know to impeach
0:46:52.800,0:46:56.319
this president once and for all for what
0:46:54.319,0:46:57.920
he did
0:46:56.319,0:47:00.560
those are the people that need to have
0:46:57.920,0:47:02.240
credit that need to get the support
0:47:00.560,0:47:04.000
and the recognition for having the
0:47:02.240,0:47:04.800
courage to stand up sometimes that’s all
0:47:04.000,0:47:07.200
it takes
0:47:04.800,0:47:09.440
you know in situations like this
0:47:07.200,0:47:12.480
everybody’s shocked everybody’s scared
0:47:09.440,0:47:14.110
and having someone that has the carriage
0:47:12.480,0:47:15.520
to stand up and do the right thing
0:47:14.110,0:47:20.160
[Music]
0:47:15.520,0:47:22.160
can really alter and change the dynamic
0:47:20.160,0:47:23.280
who else do you think deserves credit in
0:47:22.160,0:47:26.880
this case here
0:47:23.280,0:47:31.200
and some praise well
0:47:26.880,0:47:32.480
to anyone well i’m glad that the people
0:47:31.200,0:47:35.590
who originally
0:47:32.480,0:47:37.280
did support um
0:47:35.590,0:47:41.200
[Music]
0:47:37.280,0:47:45.040
you know like some of these like
0:47:41.200,0:47:47.599
the republican party well not
0:47:45.040,0:47:48.960
the people who did support the president
0:47:47.599,0:47:52.079
not knowing about
0:47:48.960,0:47:55.680
the actions of what he said and
0:47:52.079,0:47:58.240
what could lead to it it’s kind of
0:47:55.680,0:47:59.520
it’s kind of nice to see those people
0:47:58.240,0:48:03.280
finally realizing
0:47:59.520,0:48:06.880
okay something has to be done and
0:48:03.280,0:48:10.079
stepping down and trying to
0:48:06.880,0:48:11.440
go the other side yeah somebody else i
0:48:10.079,0:48:13.040
think deserves some credit here
0:48:11.440,0:48:14.720
are some of the news cancers who were in
0:48:13.040,0:48:16.640
the middle of this yeah
0:48:14.720,0:48:18.000
you know president trump has spent four
0:48:16.640,0:48:20.079
years vilifying
0:48:18.000,0:48:22.960
the media in general and certain
0:48:20.079,0:48:25.440
networks specifically like cnn
0:48:22.960,0:48:28.559
and you had some reporters who were on
0:48:25.440,0:48:32.480
scene doing their job trying to report
0:48:28.559,0:48:34.319
and they were the target of violence and
0:48:32.480,0:48:35.760
the carriage that they had to stand
0:48:34.319,0:48:37.119
there and stand their ground and do
0:48:35.760,0:48:39.200
their job
0:48:37.119,0:48:40.480
i think is definitely worth mentioning
0:48:39.200,0:48:42.720
yeah i definitely
0:48:40.480,0:48:44.160
have to say when i was watching the news
0:48:42.720,0:48:47.520
and saw like
0:48:44.160,0:48:49.920
the news people at the scene and just
0:48:47.520,0:48:52.319
seeing the violence behind them
0:48:49.920,0:48:54.079
i mean they had a lot of courage like
0:48:52.319,0:48:57.520
still being able to go once
0:48:54.079,0:49:00.640
beyond script and still remaining calm
0:48:57.520,0:49:02.480
yeah absolutely so you also want to keep
0:49:00.640,0:49:03.920
your own feelings in check as a parent
0:49:02.480,0:49:05.760
when you’re talking to your kids about
0:49:03.920,0:49:08.480
these sorts of things
0:49:05.760,0:49:10.079
i know i tend to get very riled up with
0:49:08.480,0:49:11.920
these sorts of things
0:49:10.079,0:49:13.520
when i sat there and watched what was
0:49:11.920,0:49:17.040
happening
0:49:13.520,0:49:21.359
i was outraged i was angry i was
0:49:17.040,0:49:24.960
annoyed i had all kinds of feelings
0:49:21.359,0:49:26.960
as i watched everything unfurl
0:49:24.960,0:49:28.480
but it’s one of those things where when
0:49:26.960,0:49:30.480
you sit down with your kids to have this
0:49:28.480,0:49:33.839
kind of discussion you can’t let those
0:49:30.480,0:49:36.800
feelings dictate the conversation
0:49:33.839,0:49:37.599
you have to let your your sort of put
0:49:36.800,0:49:40.960
those feeling
0:49:37.599,0:49:43.920
feelings aside for a little bit
0:49:40.960,0:49:45.920
and and convey the information and give
0:49:43.920,0:49:47.839
your children a chance to express their
0:49:45.920,0:49:51.359
feelings and to name their feelings
0:49:47.839,0:49:53.440
that’s a that’s another important thing
0:49:51.359,0:49:55.920
you know situations like this are a
0:49:53.440,0:49:57.440
chance to teach kids emotional literacy
0:49:55.920,0:50:00.000
where they can’t
0:49:57.440,0:50:02.240
necessarily express their feelings or
0:50:00.000,0:50:05.200
describe their feelings in general
0:50:02.240,0:50:07.760
this is the time to help those kids
0:50:05.200,0:50:10.640
define what those feelings are
0:50:07.760,0:50:12.720
and and give definition to what some of
0:50:10.640,0:50:14.079
those feelings are like outrage you know
0:50:12.720,0:50:16.720
most kids
0:50:14.079,0:50:18.160
most kids don’t feel outraged you know
0:50:16.720,0:50:20.559
you these are
0:50:18.160,0:50:21.599
mature emotions that surface later in
0:50:20.559,0:50:23.440
life
0:50:21.599,0:50:25.280
that when you see something like this
0:50:23.440,0:50:26.000
and you see somebody out there trying to
0:50:25.280,0:50:28.559
destroy your
0:50:26.000,0:50:29.520
government you may have feelings that
0:50:28.559,0:50:31.920
you don’t
0:50:29.520,0:50:33.119
quite understand or or know what they
0:50:31.920,0:50:34.960
mean and
0:50:33.119,0:50:36.720
this is a good opportunity to give the
0:50:34.960,0:50:38.160
kids a chance to learn about those
0:50:36.720,0:50:41.200
feelings
0:50:38.160,0:50:42.559
what were your feelings when you saw
0:50:41.200,0:50:45.119
this happening
0:50:42.559,0:50:46.720
well at first i was kind of shocked and
0:50:45.119,0:50:49.760
didn’t entirely believe
0:50:46.720,0:50:52.000
mommy at first because like
0:50:49.760,0:50:54.000
i didn’t think it was actually going to
0:50:52.000,0:50:57.440
happen and then when i started
0:50:54.000,0:51:02.480
seeing it i started feeling sad
0:50:57.440,0:51:05.920
upset angry all at the same time and
0:51:02.480,0:51:07.920
i just and since i was getting so many
0:51:05.920,0:51:10.000
negative emotions i just wanted to turn
0:51:07.920,0:51:12.160
it off and just
0:51:10.000,0:51:13.839
you know distract myself with something
0:51:12.160,0:51:15.920
else or do something else that way i
0:51:13.839,0:51:17.920
didn’t have to think about it too much
0:51:15.920,0:51:19.760
yeah and that’s that’s a coping
0:51:17.920,0:51:21.680
mechanism and the last thing that we
0:51:19.760,0:51:24.000
talk about here
0:51:21.680,0:51:26.000
is to teach healthy coping mechanisms
0:51:24.000,0:51:26.720
you know teach kids how to navigate some
0:51:26.000,0:51:29.400
of these big
0:51:26.720,0:51:31.359
feelings you know whether it’s breathing
0:51:29.400,0:51:34.079
exercises
0:51:31.359,0:51:36.880
or doing some exercise or music to
0:51:34.079,0:51:38.960
distract you from it
0:51:36.880,0:51:40.960
you know a lot of the stuff that we’ve
0:51:38.960,0:51:42.559
we talked about on this podcast really
0:51:40.960,0:51:45.839
are coping mechanisms for
0:51:42.559,0:51:48.079
different triggers so a lot of things
0:51:45.839,0:51:51.280
that we’ve talked about some of the
0:51:48.079,0:51:52.000
meditation stuff we’ve talked about just
0:51:51.280,0:51:53.599
talking about
0:51:52.000,0:51:56.000
getting it out in the open asking
0:51:53.599,0:51:59.520
questions getting those feelings exposed
0:51:56.000,0:52:01.920
and talking about them is
0:51:59.520,0:52:03.520
a very good coping mechanism and you do
0:52:01.920,0:52:05.839
that through some of the normal
0:52:03.520,0:52:08.000
family rituals that you do having your
0:52:05.839,0:52:09.599
dinners together
0:52:08.000,0:52:11.280
you know family dinner in the evening is
0:52:09.599,0:52:11.920
a great time to talk about these types
0:52:11.280,0:52:15.359
of things
0:52:11.920,0:52:18.319
and sharing these feelings and working
0:52:15.359,0:52:21.440
through them is an important thing
0:52:18.319,0:52:23.680
have you felt that you’ve been getting
0:52:21.440,0:52:25.440
those outlets that you’ve had a chance
0:52:23.680,0:52:28.559
to to try to cope with these
0:52:25.440,0:52:29.920
feelings yourself yeah i definitely
0:52:28.559,0:52:31.760
think that
0:52:29.920,0:52:34.640
the facts that i’m able to talk with you
0:52:31.760,0:52:36.559
guys very openly with our feelings is
0:52:34.640,0:52:40.079
something that i’m very hap
0:52:36.559,0:52:44.240
that has definitely helped me a lot um
0:52:40.079,0:52:46.559
although distractions do kind of help
0:52:44.240,0:52:48.400
at some point you gotta have to you
0:52:46.559,0:52:52.480
gotta have those feelings come out
0:52:48.400,0:52:55.520
you can’t just boil them up or ignore
0:52:52.480,0:52:56.640
keep them bottled up or ignore them
0:52:55.520,0:52:59.599
entirely
0:52:56.640,0:53:00.079
they’re gonna pop up at some point and i
0:52:59.599,0:53:02.480
definitely
0:53:00.079,0:53:04.240
think that having the outlet to talk
0:53:02.480,0:53:05.359
with you guys about it has definitely
0:53:04.240,0:53:08.960
given me a much
0:53:05.359,0:53:11.280
calmer approach to it i agree
0:53:08.960,0:53:13.040
i think that was really all we had today
0:53:11.280,0:53:14.000
i really just wanted to kind of talk
0:53:13.040,0:53:16.880
about what happened
0:53:14.000,0:53:18.720
and what the outcomes were and make sure
0:53:16.880,0:53:20.000
that we’re on the same page here about
0:53:18.720,0:53:21.520
how we’re going to deal with it and
0:53:20.000,0:53:22.960
where we think we’re going to go moving
0:53:21.520,0:53:24.480
forward
0:53:22.960,0:53:26.480
there’s still a lot that’s going to come
0:53:24.480,0:53:28.079
out from these events
0:53:26.480,0:53:29.520
there’s still a lot to happen with the
0:53:28.079,0:53:30.240
inauguration and everything and
0:53:29.520,0:53:32.480
hopefully we
0:53:30.240,0:53:34.800
we stay away from the violent side of
0:53:32.480,0:53:38.160
things
0:53:34.800,0:53:40.559
but i think we’ve kind of crossed a
0:53:38.160,0:53:41.520
threshold so to speak
0:53:40.559,0:53:44.240
you know with the change of
0:53:41.520,0:53:45.920
administrations here i think
0:53:44.240,0:53:48.079
we’re going to see a little bit more
0:53:45.920,0:53:49.920
normalcy return
0:53:48.079,0:53:52.319
at least to our country but hopefully to
0:53:49.920,0:53:54.839
the world in general
0:53:52.319,0:53:56.720
the last four years under trump have
0:53:54.839,0:54:01.920
been
0:53:56.720,0:54:01.920
different chaotic
0:54:02.079,0:54:09.440
unpredictable and i think that’s
0:54:05.839,0:54:11.760
largely what he wanted you know he
0:54:09.440,0:54:13.839
he wanted to come into the presidency
0:54:11.760,0:54:16.880
and sort of shake things up and
0:54:13.839,0:54:18.720
stir up the status quo and and
0:54:16.880,0:54:20.480
show that you know the politicians that
0:54:18.720,0:54:24.240
you keep electing in the office
0:54:20.480,0:54:26.559
aren’t out for your best interest and
0:54:24.240,0:54:27.839
and i think he largely accomplished a
0:54:26.559,0:54:30.800
lot of
0:54:27.839,0:54:31.520
the attitude of what he wanted to i
0:54:30.800,0:54:34.160
don’t know if
0:54:31.520,0:54:36.559
the practical side of things really came
0:54:34.160,0:54:38.960
out the way he wanted
0:54:36.559,0:54:40.799
but he’s going to be leaving office
0:54:38.960,0:54:43.200
probably is the most disgraced president
0:54:40.799,0:54:46.400
in the history of this country
0:54:43.200,0:54:48.319
twice impeached lawsuits pending as he
0:54:46.400,0:54:52.079
leaves office he may wind up going to
0:54:48.319,0:54:53.599
jail at some point in time
0:54:52.079,0:54:55.359
i don’t know it’s not the kind of legacy
0:54:53.599,0:54:59.359
i would have wanted if i was a president
0:54:55.359,0:55:00.799
definitely not so so that was all we had
0:54:59.359,0:55:02.319
we’ll take a quick break we’ll come back
0:55:00.799,0:55:07.839
we’ll get your closing thoughts
0:55:02.319,0:55:07.839
and finish up the podcast business
0:55:10.640,0:55:17.040
go for your closing remarks yeah
0:55:13.680,0:55:19.119
kind of difficult today um i guess i’ll
0:55:17.040,0:55:23.200
just say that any parents
0:55:19.119,0:55:26.319
going through this with their kids
0:55:23.200,0:55:29.440
please do use the tactics we offered um
0:55:26.319,0:55:32.240
and try to make sure your kids
0:55:29.440,0:55:32.640
understand that this is bad but don’t
0:55:32.240,0:55:36.240
like
0:55:32.640,0:55:39.599
shove it down their throats okay
0:55:36.240,0:55:40.960
i think sound sage advice that we
0:55:39.599,0:55:44.640
normally get from you
0:55:40.960,0:55:47.599
in these closing remarks uh before we go
0:55:44.640,0:55:50.160
