Insights Into Teens: Episode 89 “Teen Acne”

This week we tackle a common problem in adolescents, acne. Specifically we’re talking about teen acne. We’ll take a look at exactly what acne is from a clinical standpoint and what some of the most common causes of teen acne are.

Then we’ll take a look at the psychosocial impact of acne on teens. We’ll look at how it can trigger depression, low self-esteem and social withdraw. This can lead to negative impact on education and professional work if left unchecked.

Finally we’ll explore twelve simple but helpful ways to help manage acne. From simple face washing, to weather or not to use facial scrubs, how often you should shower and whether or not too much sunlight can make things worse.

[SEGMENT 1]

What is Teen Acne

  • Acne is a condition of the skin that shows up as different types of bumps.

  • These bumps can be blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, or cysts.

  • Teens get acne because of the hormonal changes that come with puberty.

  • If your parents had acne as teens, it’s more likely that you will, too.

  • The good news is that, for most people, acne goes away almost completely by the time they are out of their teens.

  • The type of acne that a lot of teens get is called acne vulgaris it means “of the common type”

  • It usually shows up on the face, neck, shoulders, upper back, and chest.

What causes teen acne

  • The hair follicles, or pores, in your skin contain sebaceous glands (also called oil glands).

  • These glands make sebum, which is an oil that lubricates your hair and skin.

  • Most of the time, the sebaceous glands make the right amount of sebum.

  • As the body begins to mature and develop, though, hormones stimulate the sebaceous glands to make more sebum.

  • Pores become clogged if there is too much sebum and too many dead skin cells.

  • Bacteria can then get trapped inside the pores and multiply.

  • This causes swelling and redness — the start of acne.

  • If a pore gets clogged up and closes but bulges out from the skin, you’re left with a whitehead.

  • If a pore gets clogged up but stays open, the top surface can darken and you’re left with a blackhead.

  • Sometimes the wall of the pore opens, allowing sebum, bacteria, and dead skin cells to make their way under the skin — and you’re left with a small, red bump called a pimple (sometimes pimples have a pus-filled top from the body’s reaction to the bacterial infection).

  • Clogged pores that open up very deep in the skin can cause nodules, which are infected lumps or cysts that are bigger than pimples and can be painful.

  • Occasionally, large cysts that seem like acne may be boils caused by a staph infection.

[SEGMENT 2]

Psychosocial Impact of Acne

  • Acne can trigger depressive tendencies
    • When you consider that over 80 percent of acne sufferers are impressionable teens and young adults who are at the verge of discovering themselves, building self-esteem, and developing vital social skills necessary to function effectively in society, you will appreciate just how much psychological damage acne can do to the sufferer.

  • Acne can lead to low self-esteem
    • Depression is just one out of the several adverse effects of acne. People suffering from  a severe outbreak also struggle with low self-esteem and poor body image.

  • It can cause social withdrawal
    • Social withdrawal is another adverse effect of acne on teenagers. Often, especially in middle and high school, students with acne are exposed to cruel psyche-shattering taunts from others. These taunts if not nipped in the bud could ultimately lead a person with acne to withdraw from all forms of social interactions.

  • It can impact negatively on education and work
    • Not only do young people with acne have to struggle with the physical and psychological effects of the skin ailment. The impact often also spills over into their work and/or academics.

[SEGMENT 3]

Twelve tops to help manage acne

  1. Have your teen use over-the-counter acne products, and wash problem areas with a gentle cleanser twice daily.

  2. After washing the skin, treat with a tropical product containing adapalene.

  3. Avoid facial scrubs, astringents and masks, as well as excessive scrubbing and washing.

  4. Remind your teen to use their acne treatment, but be careful to only remind them occasionally.

  5. Do not touch or pick at problem areas.

  6. Your teen should use shampoo every day.

  7. Shower after activities that cause sweat and oil production.

  8. Treat acne early.

  9. Protect skin from the sun.

  10. Avoid excessive amounts of cosmetics.

  11. Protect skin from items that create friction or cause pressure.

  12. Help your teenager manage and reduce stress,

0:01:04.159,0:01:08.479
hi everyone how you doing today maddie

0:01:06.560,0:01:10.400
i’m doing pretty well

0:01:08.479,0:01:12.080
so we had a couple of fun episodes in

0:01:10.400,0:01:14.479
between little breaks that we took there

0:01:12.080,0:01:16.960
we did take a couple of weeks off

0:01:14.479,0:01:19.119
i think this week we’re kind of getting

0:01:16.960,0:01:22.240
back into the swing of things

0:01:19.119,0:01:25.520
we’re gonna do another one of our more

0:01:22.240,0:01:26.479
i don’t know informative type of podcast

0:01:25.520,0:01:28.960
less fun

0:01:26.479,0:01:29.680
yeah but i think we’ll have fun doing it

0:01:28.960,0:01:32.240
sure

0:01:29.680,0:01:33.280
before we get into uh anything is there

0:01:32.240,0:01:35.200
any special

0:01:33.280,0:01:36.880
news that you wanted to announce

0:01:35.200,0:01:40.159
possibly

0:01:36.880,0:01:43.119
what would that be um on

0:01:40.159,0:01:44.560
so we actually were debating this for a

0:01:43.119,0:01:47.920
little while

0:01:44.560,0:01:51.280
we were planning on getting a new cat

0:01:47.920,0:01:54.399
yeah um and

0:01:51.280,0:01:57.360
wednesday it was wednesday right

0:01:54.399,0:01:58.640
it was indeed wednesday okay so on

0:01:57.360,0:02:01.759
wednesday

0:01:58.640,0:02:04.960
we ended up adopting our new

0:02:01.759,0:02:08.319
kitten and what’s the kitten’s name

0:02:04.960,0:02:10.800
well i finally picked a name after

0:02:08.319,0:02:12.160
everything and her name’s pumpkin

0:02:10.800,0:02:16.080
pumpkin

0:02:12.160,0:02:18.720
okay now we do have as you might expect

0:02:16.080,0:02:19.360
loads of pictures of pumpkin already and

0:02:18.720,0:02:21.920
videos

0:02:19.360,0:02:22.480
and videos uh we’re not going to show

0:02:21.920,0:02:24.239
him here

0:02:22.480,0:02:26.640
yet i think we’re actually going to do a

0:02:24.239,0:02:30.239
whole podcast dedicated

0:02:26.640,0:02:33.360
to showcasing pumpkin and all her glory

0:02:30.239,0:02:36.239
in one of the coming weeks yay

0:02:33.360,0:02:38.080
so just a little tease until we do the

0:02:36.239,0:02:40.879
really cute kitten episode

0:02:38.080,0:02:43.040
yay but that’s not what we’re talking

0:02:40.879,0:02:45.840
about today today we’re talking about

0:02:43.040,0:02:47.599

now are we ready to talk puss and

0:03:32.319,0:03:38.799
sewers and bumps and all that fun stuff

0:03:34.560,0:03:38.799
really gotta have to freeze it like that

0:03:38.879,0:03:47.040
whatever let’s get into this let’s get

0:03:41.040,0:03:50.239
into it

0:03:47.040,0:03:54.400
so maddie tell us what is teen

0:03:50.239,0:03:56.799
acne okay so acne is a condition of the

0:03:54.400,0:03:57.760
skin that shows up as different types of

0:03:56.799,0:04:00.400
bumps

0:03:57.760,0:04:01.360
these bombs can be blackheads whiteheads

0:04:00.400,0:04:04.799
pimples or

0:04:01.360,0:04:08.000
cysts teens get acne because of the

0:04:04.799,0:04:10.159
hormonal changes that come with puberty

0:04:08.000,0:04:12.319
if your parents had acne as teens it’s

0:04:10.159,0:04:14.640
more likely that you will too

0:04:12.319,0:04:17.040
the good news is that for most people

0:04:14.640,0:04:19.040
acne goes away almost completely by the

0:04:17.040,0:04:21.840
time they are out of their teens

0:04:19.040,0:04:22.720
the the type of acne that a lot of teens

0:04:21.840,0:04:26.479
get is called

0:04:22.720,0:04:27.280
acne vulgaris it means of the common

0:04:26.479,0:04:30.639
type

0:04:27.280,0:04:34.560
it usually shows up on the face neck

0:04:30.639,0:04:37.600
shoulders upper back and chest so

0:04:34.560,0:04:39.919
growing up as a kid i never really had

0:04:37.600,0:04:41.600
acne i’d get a pimple here pimple there

0:04:39.919,0:04:43.199
that type of thing

0:04:41.600,0:04:45.600
and i don’t think mommy really suffered

0:04:43.199,0:04:49.280
from acne all that much either probably

0:04:45.600,0:04:52.479
same thing few pimples here and there

0:04:49.280,0:04:55.759
are you do you suffer from acne um

0:04:52.479,0:04:59.440
i’m pretty sure i do i um

0:04:55.759,0:05:03.039
i get a lot of pimples everywhere

0:04:59.440,0:05:05.360
mainly on my face um so

0:05:03.039,0:05:06.639
i definitely don’t say that like i only

0:05:05.360,0:05:09.520
have one or two

0:05:06.639,0:05:11.360
i i have like at least five on my face

0:05:09.520,0:05:13.840
that i could probably count right now

0:05:11.360,0:05:15.840
right and that’s perfectly normal like a

0:05:13.840,0:05:18.080
high percentage of teens

0:05:15.840,0:05:19.919
you know go through this and it’s part

0:05:18.080,0:05:21.520
of the normal biological process and

0:05:19.919,0:05:23.280
we’ll talk in a few minutes about what

0:05:21.520,0:05:24.479
causes it

0:05:23.280,0:05:26.880
but a lot of teens tend to get

0:05:24.479,0:05:28.320
self-conscious when they get acne

0:05:26.880,0:05:29.840
and you really shouldn’t because it’s a

0:05:28.320,0:05:31.600
normal thing it’s i mean it doesn’t

0:05:29.840,0:05:33.600
happen to everyone

0:05:31.600,0:05:35.520
but it happens to the majority of

0:05:33.600,0:05:38.639
teenagers yeah

0:05:35.520,0:05:40.479
my brother suffer from acne quite

0:05:38.639,0:05:42.080
severely

0:05:40.479,0:05:45.039
and he would get it all through his face

0:05:42.080,0:05:48.160
mostly on his on his cheeks actually

0:05:45.039,0:05:49.840
under his eyes and he went through all

0:05:48.160,0:05:51.360
kinds of different treatments and

0:05:49.840,0:05:52.000
different kind of medications and it was

0:05:51.360,0:05:54.800
one of those things

0:05:52.000,0:05:56.400
where nothing he tried help it just sort

0:05:54.800,0:05:58.000
of had to run its course and by the time

0:05:56.400,0:06:00.160
he was out of his teen years he was

0:05:58.000,0:06:02.960
perfectly fine

0:06:00.160,0:06:05.520
i worked with a woman years ago whose

0:06:02.960,0:06:08.720
daughter had severe acne

0:06:05.520,0:06:11.520
and she was kind of in a uh i don’t know

0:06:08.720,0:06:12.880
kind of an elite crowd sort of like the

0:06:11.520,0:06:15.120
popular kids and

0:06:12.880,0:06:16.080
and she took a lot of harassment from

0:06:15.120,0:06:18.240
that

0:06:16.080,0:06:20.000
because the other kids in her group

0:06:18.240,0:06:23.520
didn’t really suffer from

0:06:20.000,0:06:25.039
acne as severely as she did so it had it

0:06:23.520,0:06:27.759
took an emotional toll

0:06:25.039,0:06:29.600
on her so that’s some of the things we

0:06:27.759,0:06:32.080
kind of have to take into consideration

0:06:29.600,0:06:35.520
here is that one it’s it’s normal

0:06:32.080,0:06:36.800
and and two kids can be mean and they’re

0:06:35.520,0:06:38.160
gonna be mean when they

0:06:36.800,0:06:39.919
when they see anything that’s different

0:06:38.160,0:06:43.919
than what they normally say

0:06:39.919,0:06:45.520
yep so you kind of have to not let that

0:06:43.919,0:06:48.479
get to you though but it’s

0:06:45.520,0:06:49.680
that’s easier said than done right yeah

0:06:48.479,0:06:53.280
so what causes

0:06:49.680,0:06:56.720
teen acne the hair follicles

0:06:53.280,0:06:59.919
or pores in your skin contain

0:06:56.720,0:07:01.680
s sebaceous i can’t even pronounce it

0:06:59.919,0:07:04.000
now we did this beforehand

0:07:01.680,0:07:06.080
they contain sebaceous glands also

0:07:04.000,0:07:08.800
called oil glands

0:07:06.080,0:07:10.800
these glands make something called sebum

0:07:08.800,0:07:11.199
which is an oil that lubricates your

0:07:10.800,0:07:14.400
hair

0:07:11.199,0:07:16.160
and your skin most of the time the

0:07:14.400,0:07:17.840
sebaceous glands make the right amount

0:07:16.160,0:07:19.919
of sebum

0:07:17.840,0:07:22.479
as the body begins to mature and develop

0:07:19.919,0:07:24.720
though hormones stimulate the sebaceous

0:07:22.479,0:07:26.560
glands to make more sebum

0:07:24.720,0:07:30.560
pores become clogged if there’s too much

0:07:26.560,0:07:33.280
sebum and too many dead skin cells

0:07:30.560,0:07:35.360
bacteria can then get trapped inside the

0:07:33.280,0:07:37.680
pores and multiply

0:07:35.360,0:07:40.560
this causes swelling and redness which

0:07:37.680,0:07:43.599
is the start of acne

0:07:40.560,0:07:46.479
the pore gets clogged up and closes but

0:07:43.599,0:07:49.120
bulges out from the skin and you’re left

0:07:46.479,0:07:51.360
with what’s called a white head

0:07:49.120,0:07:52.560
if the pore gets clogged up but stays

0:07:51.360,0:07:54.879
open

0:07:52.560,0:07:56.319
the top surface can darken and you’re

0:07:54.879,0:08:00.400
left with what’s called

0:07:56.319,0:08:01.759
a blackhead sometimes the wall of the

0:08:00.400,0:08:03.759
pore opens

0:08:01.759,0:08:05.360
allowing the sebum bacteria and dead

0:08:03.759,0:08:07.919
skin cells to make their way

0:08:05.360,0:08:09.440
under the skin and you’re left with a

0:08:07.919,0:08:12.000
small red bump

0:08:09.440,0:08:13.680
called a pimple that’s where your pimple

0:08:12.000,0:08:16.160
term comes from

0:08:13.680,0:08:17.680
sometimes pimples have a pus filled top

0:08:16.160,0:08:19.440
from the body’s reaction to the

0:08:17.680,0:08:21.360
bacterial infection

0:08:19.440,0:08:23.919
so anytime you get an infection if you

0:08:21.360,0:08:26.960
get a cut or something like that

0:08:23.919,0:08:28.800
your body attacks that the the germs and

0:08:26.960,0:08:30.160
the bacteria in there with white blood

0:08:28.800,0:08:32.640
cells

0:08:30.160,0:08:35.279
and as the white blood cells kill off

0:08:32.640,0:08:36.719
the bacteria it forms this pots and and

0:08:35.279,0:08:37.440
the pus is what you have to get out of

0:08:36.719,0:08:39.919
the body

0:08:37.440,0:08:41.680
ah so when you pop a pimple that’s all

0:08:39.919,0:08:43.919
that is that’s your body’s natural

0:08:41.680,0:08:45.519
defense against the bacteria that’s in

0:08:43.919,0:08:48.240
the pimple

0:08:45.519,0:08:49.600
so it’s not anything like you’re gooey

0:08:48.240,0:08:54.320
or nasty or anything like that it’s

0:08:49.600,0:08:56.959
it’s it’s your body defending itself

0:08:54.320,0:08:58.080
clogged pores that open up very deep in

0:08:56.959,0:09:00.959
the skin can cause

0:08:58.080,0:09:01.600
nodules which are infected lumps or

0:09:00.959,0:09:03.279
cysts

0:09:01.600,0:09:04.800
that are bigger than pimples and can be

0:09:03.279,0:09:07.120
painful

0:09:04.800,0:09:08.160
occasionally large cysts that seem like

0:09:07.120,0:09:11.440
acting may be

0:09:08.160,0:09:13.600
boils caused by a staph infection

0:09:11.440,0:09:15.200
so i had a friend of mine well he was an

0:09:13.600,0:09:18.800
employee of mine

0:09:15.200,0:09:22.720
many years back and he had suffered from

0:09:18.800,0:09:26.160
from acne and his acne

0:09:22.720,0:09:27.519
kind of moved into adult acne as as he

0:09:26.160,0:09:29.120
got older

0:09:27.519,0:09:31.839
and what would happen is he would get

0:09:29.120,0:09:35.360
these nodules under

0:09:31.839,0:09:36.640
his ears and they were infected pimples

0:09:35.360,0:09:38.800
that would happen

0:09:36.640,0:09:39.839
and it would infect throughout the skin

0:09:38.800,0:09:42.560
and he would get these

0:09:39.839,0:09:43.920
large cysts that would form and he would

0:09:42.560,0:09:45.920
have these bumps on his neck and he

0:09:43.920,0:09:48.160
would have to go to the doctor

0:09:45.920,0:09:50.160
and he’d have to get them drained and

0:09:48.160,0:09:51.279
cleaned and taken care of and stuff like

0:09:50.160,0:09:53.040
that

0:09:51.279,0:09:55.200
so that’s something to keep in mind is

0:09:53.040,0:09:56.160
that if you do get pimples you need to

0:09:55.200,0:09:59.200
keep them

0:09:56.160,0:10:01.360
clean you need to get them clean and

0:09:59.200,0:10:02.880
if they start to get infected you need

0:10:01.360,0:10:05.360
to make sure that you apply proper

0:10:02.880,0:10:08.399
medication or see a doctor

0:10:05.360,0:10:09.760
otherwise they can get worse and they

0:10:08.399,0:10:11.440
can be very painful that was

0:10:09.760,0:10:13.440
for when he used to get those he’d get

0:10:11.440,0:10:15.040
them once a year maybe

0:10:13.440,0:10:16.800
but when he got them they were very

0:10:15.040,0:10:18.480
painful for him until he got him taken

0:10:16.800,0:10:20.320
care of and i had one before

0:10:18.480,0:10:22.800
years ago we were on vacation actually i

0:10:20.320,0:10:26.079
got one on the back of my neck

0:10:22.800,0:10:26.720
and i generally have sensitive skin

0:10:26.079,0:10:29.519
which is

0:10:26.720,0:10:31.040
ironically why i keep the beard because

0:10:29.519,0:10:33.839
if i shave every day

0:10:31.040,0:10:35.200
my face will break out so i had to kind

0:10:33.839,0:10:36.959
of leave the beard there so i didn’t

0:10:35.200,0:10:38.560
shave all the time

0:10:36.959,0:10:41.200
but i would get them on my neck from

0:10:38.560,0:10:42.560
time to time i get pimples on my neck

0:10:41.200,0:10:44.720
and what happened was one of them got

0:10:42.560,0:10:46.399
infected and i got a cyst

0:10:44.720,0:10:48.959
and i went to the doctor and the doctor

0:10:46.399,0:10:50.560
tried to drain it and it wouldn’t drain

0:10:48.959,0:10:52.240
and it got to the point where i couldn’t

0:10:50.560,0:10:53.600
even sleep at night because it hurt so

0:10:52.240,0:10:55.360
much

0:10:53.600,0:10:57.440
and we would happen to be on vacation

0:10:55.360,0:10:59.120
and at the time and i was applying warm

0:10:57.440,0:11:00.640
compresses and all the stuff the doctor

0:10:59.120,0:11:02.560
was saying

0:11:00.640,0:11:03.839
and we were up at great wolf lodge i

0:11:02.560,0:11:05.200
think you were

0:11:03.839,0:11:07.600
you were born at the time i think you

0:11:05.200,0:11:10.959
were just a baby at the time

0:11:07.600,0:11:12.720
and uh you know i kept trying to drain

0:11:10.959,0:11:14.959
it and finally it it popped and it

0:11:12.720,0:11:18.399
drained and it was

0:11:14.959,0:11:21.120
it was a lot mommy was there and

0:11:18.399,0:11:22.000
it was quite alarming but the the relief

0:11:21.120,0:11:25.200
of that was

0:11:22.000,0:11:27.519
was uh very satisfying finally to get

0:11:25.200,0:11:29.200
rid of that pressure on there but

0:11:27.519,0:11:31.200
but yeah i mean if you don’t take care

0:11:29.200,0:11:33.200
of these of the pimples themselves when

0:11:31.200,0:11:34.720
they come up and it’s very important

0:11:33.200,0:11:36.640
you can’t just ignore them i mean don’t

0:11:34.720,0:11:38.480
be self-conscious about them

0:11:36.640,0:11:40.240
but don’t ignore them they are a medical

0:11:38.480,0:11:42.240
condition they can get infected

0:11:40.240,0:11:44.000
make sure you’re applying proper medical

0:11:42.240,0:11:46.399
treatment for them

0:11:44.000,0:11:47.760
so that’s the big thing so we’re going

0:11:46.399,0:11:50.480
to take a quick break

0:11:47.760,0:11:52.399
we’ll come back and we’re going to talk

0:11:50.480,0:11:57.839
about the psychosocial

0:13:06.399,0:13:11.120
welcome back we are talking teen acne

0:13:10.079,0:13:12.279
today

0:13:11.120,0:13:14.399
and we’re going to talk about the

0:13:12.279,0:13:17.600
psychosocial impact of

0:13:14.399,0:13:20.800
acne acne can trigger

0:13:17.600,0:13:22.560
depressive tendencies so when you

0:13:20.800,0:13:23.839
consider that over 80 percent of acne

0:13:22.560,0:13:25.519
sufferers

0:13:23.839,0:13:28.160
are impressionable teens and young

0:13:25.519,0:13:30.320
adults who are at the verge

0:13:28.160,0:13:31.760
of discovering themselves building

0:13:30.320,0:13:34.079
self-esteem

0:13:31.760,0:13:35.920
and developing vital social skills

0:13:34.079,0:13:37.440
necessary to function effectively in

0:13:35.920,0:13:40.560
society

0:13:37.440,0:13:43.120
you’ll appreciate just how much psycho

0:13:40.560,0:13:44.320
psychological damage acne can do to the

0:13:43.120,0:13:45.839
sufferer

0:13:44.320,0:13:47.440
so we already talked about a couple of

0:13:45.839,0:13:49.279
instances i told you about

0:13:47.440,0:13:50.800
the one daughter of the woman that i

0:13:49.279,0:13:53.279
worked with

0:13:50.800,0:13:57.279
and the uh effect that it had on her

0:13:53.279,0:13:57.279
have you encountered any kind of

0:13:57.680,0:14:03.839
social i don’t know attacks

0:14:01.120,0:14:03.839
or

0:14:04.240,0:14:07.440
razzing or anyone making fun of you

0:14:06.160,0:14:10.399
because of the

0:14:07.440,0:14:11.279
the i mean you have mild acne at this

0:14:10.399,0:14:12.880
point but

0:14:11.279,0:14:14.720
has anyone ever said anything about it

0:14:12.880,0:14:18.160
to you in school or anything like that

0:14:14.720,0:14:22.480
um not that i know of actually i mean

0:14:18.160,0:14:25.920
i never really talked with many kids and

0:14:22.480,0:14:29.279
not many kids actually came up to me and

0:14:25.920,0:14:30.959
i didn’t and not that and unless like i

0:14:29.279,0:14:33.680
forgot a time or something

0:14:30.959,0:14:34.800
i don’t think any of them actually ever

0:14:33.680,0:14:37.839
like

0:14:34.800,0:14:40.959
um made fun of me for having acne

0:14:37.839,0:14:41.600
so having acting at this point in time

0:14:40.959,0:14:45.040
does it

0:14:41.600,0:14:47.279
have any kind of effect

0:14:45.040,0:14:49.440
on you feeling negative about yourself

0:14:47.279,0:14:54.240
or your self-image or anything like that

0:14:49.440,0:14:57.839
i mean kind of i still like

0:14:54.240,0:14:58.399
acne definitely like makes me look a

0:14:57.839,0:15:02.000
little

0:14:58.399,0:15:05.440
freaky um and i definitely can say that

0:15:02.000,0:15:08.480
i do have like small problems

0:15:05.440,0:15:11.839
with that but i also remember

0:15:08.480,0:15:12.639
but i also like i also have to think

0:15:11.839,0:15:13.760
about

0:15:12.639,0:15:15.839
i shouldn’t really care what other

0:15:13.760,0:15:17.519
people think about me and that this is a

0:15:15.839,0:15:18.880
normal process that should hopefully

0:15:17.519,0:15:21.360
stop when i get older

0:15:18.880,0:15:23.360
right right well one of the other things

0:15:21.360,0:15:25.120
they talk about is that acne can lead to

0:15:23.360,0:15:26.959
low self-esteem

0:15:25.120,0:15:29.040
depression is just one out of several

0:15:26.959,0:15:31.600
adverse effects of acne

0:15:29.040,0:15:34.000
people suffering from a severe outbreak

0:15:31.600,0:15:35.680
also struggle with low self-esteem and

0:15:34.000,0:15:38.880
poor body image

0:15:35.680,0:15:41.360
so the the mild acne that you have now

0:15:38.880,0:15:42.639
does it have any kind of negative effect

0:15:41.360,0:15:45.360
on your

0:15:42.639,0:15:47.120
body image of yourself i mean i always

0:15:45.360,0:15:49.360
think i look kind of weird with the fact

0:15:47.120,0:15:52.160
that i have a bunch of red dots over my

0:15:49.360,0:15:52.639
a few red dots over my face but i never

0:15:52.160,0:15:56.000
really

0:15:52.639,0:15:58.160
like contributed that to my body image

0:15:56.000,0:15:59.040
like i know i looked a little weird but

0:15:58.160,0:16:02.320
i never really

0:15:59.040,0:16:03.279
took that in to like my overall body

0:16:02.320,0:16:06.240
image i didn’t

0:16:03.279,0:16:07.040
it didn’t impact my self-esteem too much

0:16:06.240,0:16:08.560
sure

0:16:07.040,0:16:10.560
it kind of did lower a bit of my

0:16:08.560,0:16:12.399
confidence but

0:16:10.560,0:16:14.160
i still had to remember that this was

0:16:12.399,0:16:16.320
normal and

0:16:14.160,0:16:18.639
other people have it and i shouldn’t

0:16:16.320,0:16:21.279
care what other people think about it

0:16:18.639,0:16:22.959
now most cases of acne usually come in

0:16:21.279,0:16:25.040
in waves like some day

0:16:22.959,0:16:26.560
some some weeks may be better than

0:16:25.040,0:16:27.279
others some weeks you may have an

0:16:26.560,0:16:29.920
outbreak

0:16:27.279,0:16:31.040
it could be attributed to physical

0:16:29.920,0:16:33.920
activity if you’re

0:16:31.040,0:16:34.880
sweating a lot if it’s hot out do you

0:16:33.920,0:16:37.440
find that

0:16:34.880,0:16:38.320
it comes in waves for you or do you

0:16:37.440,0:16:40.240
always have

0:16:38.320,0:16:42.320
basically the same level of acne all the

0:16:40.240,0:16:44.800
time i mean i have the same level of

0:16:42.320,0:16:46.880
acne most of the time like

0:16:44.800,0:16:49.360
except with my forehead like for some

0:16:46.880,0:16:51.199
reason my forehead is where most my acne

0:16:49.360,0:16:53.440
resides

0:16:51.199,0:16:55.199
probably because i scratch my head a lot

0:16:53.440,0:16:57.199
maybe i’m not sure

0:16:55.199,0:16:58.720
um but occasionally there are the times

0:16:57.199,0:17:01.519
where i have acne

0:16:58.720,0:17:04.640
in the more uncomfortable places like

0:17:01.519,0:17:07.839
where my nose is or my ears or my mouth

0:17:04.640,0:17:10.400
um and at that point like that’s the

0:17:07.839,0:17:13.600
only time where i really notice it

0:17:10.400,0:17:17.600
um i don’t like i don’t really keep

0:17:13.600,0:17:19.600
um i don’t really keep much um

0:17:17.600,0:17:21.199
i don’t give much attention to the acne

0:17:19.600,0:17:23.679
going on around me

0:17:21.199,0:17:26.400
but when it’s in an uncomfortable spot

0:17:23.679,0:17:28.079
on my body and where i can feel the pain

0:17:26.400,0:17:30.640
that’s when i kind of pay more attention

0:17:28.079,0:17:32.480
to it makes sense

0:17:30.640,0:17:34.400
so they go on to say that it can cause

0:17:32.480,0:17:37.200
social withdrawal

0:17:34.400,0:17:39.760
so social withdrawal is another adverse

0:17:37.200,0:17:41.520
effect of acne on teenagers

0:17:39.760,0:17:43.760
often especially in middle and high

0:17:41.520,0:17:44.320
school students with acne are exposed to

0:17:43.760,0:17:47.520
cruel

0:17:44.320,0:17:49.679
acne shattering taunts from others

0:17:47.520,0:17:51.840
these taunts if not nipped in the bud

0:17:49.679,0:17:54.160
could ultimately lead a person with acne

0:17:51.840,0:17:55.520
to withdraw from all forms of social

0:17:54.160,0:17:57.600
interaction

0:17:55.520,0:17:58.559
have you ever felt compelled to not

0:17:57.600,0:18:00.799
partake

0:17:58.559,0:18:02.960
in a social activity or something like

0:18:00.799,0:18:06.000
that because of your acne

0:18:02.960,0:18:08.160
yeah no i haven’t acne hasn’t

0:18:06.000,0:18:10.960
ever been a cause for me not wanting to

0:18:08.160,0:18:14.240
do a social activity with other people

0:18:10.960,0:18:17.120
i mean like i never really um had much

0:18:14.240,0:18:19.360
problem with people um referring to my

0:18:17.120,0:18:21.760
acne it was more just like

0:18:19.360,0:18:22.799
my own kind of thing that still wasn’t

0:18:21.760,0:18:24.880
too bad

0:18:22.799,0:18:26.000
but overall it never really stopped me

0:18:24.880,0:18:28.720
from

0:18:26.000,0:18:29.679
um doing social interactions of course

0:18:28.720,0:18:32.080
there were

0:18:29.679,0:18:33.840
other things that did stop me from doing

0:18:32.080,0:18:35.039
social interactions but i don’t think

0:18:33.840,0:18:37.919
acne was one of them

0:18:35.039,0:18:39.679
i see well the last thing they talk

0:18:37.919,0:18:42.960
about here is that it can impact

0:18:39.679,0:18:45.200
negatively on education and work

0:18:42.960,0:18:46.720
not only do young people with acne have

0:18:45.200,0:18:48.880
to struggle with the physical

0:18:46.720,0:18:49.919
and psychological effects of the skin

0:18:48.880,0:18:52.240
ailment

0:18:49.919,0:18:53.039
the impact often spills over into their

0:18:52.240,0:18:56.160
work or

0:18:53.039,0:18:56.880
academics so do you find at any point in

0:18:56.160,0:18:59.600
time that

0:18:56.880,0:18:59.919
you know acne that you’ve had has caused

0:18:59.600,0:19:03.760
you

0:18:59.919,0:19:07.440
to not be able to perform at school

0:19:03.760,0:19:08.960
or not want to go to school or

0:19:07.440,0:19:10.400
or anything like that that would have

0:19:08.960,0:19:11.360
caused a negative effect on your

0:19:10.400,0:19:13.520
schoolwork

0:19:11.360,0:19:15.280
actually no i never even knew it really

0:19:13.520,0:19:18.480
impacted your schoolwork

0:19:15.280,0:19:19.039
honestly um that never really has

0:19:18.480,0:19:21.760
happened

0:19:19.039,0:19:23.679
i never like never one i didn’t i never

0:19:21.760,0:19:24.080
like not wanted to go to school because

0:19:23.679,0:19:26.080
of my

0:19:24.080,0:19:28.080
acne and i didn’t know like it can be

0:19:26.080,0:19:31.280
like that like deep

0:19:28.080,0:19:31.679
in the acne well and and referring to

0:19:31.280,0:19:33.280
the

0:19:31.679,0:19:34.799
the gentleman who had worked for me

0:19:33.280,0:19:36.960
years ago

0:19:34.799,0:19:38.640
there were times that when his the cysts

0:19:36.960,0:19:40.080
that he would grow

0:19:38.640,0:19:41.600
would get to a point where he had to

0:19:40.080,0:19:42.880
seek medical treatment he’d have to take

0:19:41.600,0:19:46.000
time off from work

0:19:42.880,0:19:48.240
to to go and have that taken care of

0:19:46.000,0:19:50.559
and we also we worked in a call center

0:19:48.240,0:19:52.640
so we had headsets on a lot

0:19:50.559,0:19:53.919
and there was you know it would get to

0:19:52.640,0:19:55.760
the point where he couldn’t wear the

0:19:53.919,0:19:57.600
headsets anymore because it was very

0:19:55.760,0:19:59.360
uncomfortable for him until he had got

0:19:57.600,0:20:02.480
it taken care of

0:19:59.360,0:20:06.320
so at least from that perspective it can

0:20:02.480,0:20:09.600
certainly cause negative impacts on work

0:20:06.320,0:20:11.440
and i think from a school standpoint

0:20:09.600,0:20:13.360
you may get kids and i know this

0:20:11.440,0:20:16.320
happened with

0:20:13.360,0:20:18.320
my friend’s daughter where she doesn’t

0:20:16.320,0:20:19.120
want to be seen in public because she

0:20:18.320,0:20:21.440
would have

0:20:19.120,0:20:22.880
outbreaks that are that are so severe it

0:20:21.440,0:20:26.400
would literally look like her

0:20:22.880,0:20:29.039
face had been mauled by a dog

0:20:26.400,0:20:29.679
you know not to be cruel or anything but

0:20:29.039,0:20:33.120
it would get

0:20:29.679,0:20:36.960
so bad and she she tried some

0:20:33.120,0:20:39.440
extreme treatments for it as well some

0:20:36.960,0:20:41.360
of which probably weren’t the best

0:20:39.440,0:20:43.120
and some of those treatments would cause

0:20:41.360,0:20:47.120
burning on the skin itself

0:20:43.120,0:20:49.600
as as it tried to work and

0:20:47.120,0:20:51.600
that combination of an outbreak plus the

0:20:49.600,0:20:53.280
wrong treatment

0:20:51.600,0:20:54.960
would leave her feeling very

0:20:53.280,0:20:56.080
self-conscious and she would take time

0:20:54.960,0:20:57.919
off from school because she didn’t want

0:20:56.080,0:21:01.200
to be seen in public

0:20:57.919,0:21:01.200
i think that’s a lot of the

0:21:01.280,0:21:06.080
impact that you see there and i suppose

0:21:04.480,0:21:07.200
some of it has to be discomfort like

0:21:06.080,0:21:08.799
you’ve mentioned

0:21:07.200,0:21:10.159
there are certain areas that you would

0:21:08.799,0:21:12.159
get it where it would be very

0:21:10.159,0:21:15.440
uncomfortable for you

0:21:12.159,0:21:18.240
um have you had any severe

0:21:15.440,0:21:19.600
experiences where it’s been painful or

0:21:18.240,0:21:21.600
uncomfortable and you haven’t been able

0:21:19.600,0:21:24.799
to do certain activities as a result

0:21:21.600,0:21:27.679
well there was one time that

0:21:24.799,0:21:29.520
when i’d gone in in my ear i had

0:21:27.679,0:21:30.720
headphones in and i was listening to

0:21:29.520,0:21:33.120
music

0:21:30.720,0:21:34.720
and you know how like sometimes when it

0:21:33.120,0:21:38.000
pops like

0:21:34.720,0:21:40.640
you get like some of the pus

0:21:38.000,0:21:42.960
stuff coming out and occasionally it can

0:21:40.640,0:21:44.640
even lead to a little bit of blood

0:21:42.960,0:21:47.039
well that’s kind of what happened to me

0:21:44.640,0:21:50.640
i ended up taking the earphones out

0:21:47.039,0:21:51.600
and my ears were based and my ear was

0:21:50.640,0:21:54.320
basically bleeding

0:21:51.600,0:21:56.400
yeah um but although it it didn’t really

0:21:54.320,0:21:59.360
stop me from doing too many activities

0:21:56.400,0:22:03.440
it was just kind of a shock

0:21:59.360,0:22:06.559
i guess um but i definitely know that

0:22:03.440,0:22:10.159
um in certain parts like

0:22:06.559,0:22:11.679
sometimes like i would have to like not

0:22:10.159,0:22:14.080
do a certain

0:22:11.679,0:22:15.280
interaction like i wouldn’t have to i

0:22:14.080,0:22:16.880
wouldn’t be able to move my

0:22:15.280,0:22:19.840
i wouldn’t be able to move certain parts

0:22:16.880,0:22:21.760
of my body due to the acne i had

0:22:19.840,0:22:23.760
um in the certain parts but normally it

0:22:21.760,0:22:25.360
was mainly just my face and it wasn’t

0:22:23.760,0:22:27.840
too hard

0:22:25.360,0:22:29.679
but i can definitely see how it would be

0:22:27.840,0:22:32.240
discomforting

0:22:29.679,0:22:32.880
too discomforting to where you can

0:22:32.240,0:22:35.520
completely

0:22:32.880,0:22:37.280
stop an entire activity yeah and

0:22:35.520,0:22:40.000
sometimes it really depends on

0:22:37.280,0:22:41.440
where the acting occurs because there

0:22:40.000,0:22:43.760
are certain areas

0:22:41.440,0:22:45.200
you know just take the face for instance

0:22:43.760,0:22:46.320
you know there’s certain areas on your

0:22:45.200,0:22:49.360
face that have more

0:22:46.320,0:22:50.960
nerve endings than others so your

0:22:49.360,0:22:52.559
forehead for instance

0:22:50.960,0:22:53.520
not so many nerve endings there so when

0:22:52.559,0:22:54.960
you get in there it’s not that

0:22:53.520,0:22:57.280
uncomfortable

0:22:54.960,0:22:58.799
but if you get one like on the rim of

0:22:57.280,0:23:00.159
your nose or on the inside of your nose

0:22:58.799,0:23:01.120
there’s a lot of nerve endings there

0:23:00.159,0:23:03.760
because it’s one of your

0:23:01.120,0:23:06.799
sense organs yeah and as a result they

0:23:03.760,0:23:08.559
can be extremely painful

0:23:06.799,0:23:10.080
and that’s usually like if i get them

0:23:08.559,0:23:11.440
because i have a i have a deviated

0:23:10.080,0:23:14.320
septum

0:23:11.440,0:23:15.919
on the one side so as a result i i tend

0:23:14.320,0:23:18.480
to get

0:23:15.919,0:23:20.720
pimples on the inside on the one side

0:23:18.480,0:23:23.120
and when i get them on the nose they are

0:23:20.720,0:23:23.919
very painful they’re the ones that i

0:23:23.120,0:23:26.559
mean i don’t

0:23:23.919,0:23:26.960
like call out a work for it or anything

0:23:26.559,0:23:29.120
uh

0:23:26.960,0:23:30.480
but you know even without touching it

0:23:29.120,0:23:34.400
they can be very painful

0:23:30.480,0:23:36.320
yeah so just some things to keep in mind

0:23:34.400,0:23:39.039
so uh we’re going to take another quick

0:23:36.320,0:23:42.559
break and we will come back

0:23:39.039,0:23:45.679
and we’re going to talk about the 12

0:23:42.559,0:23:47.360
top things to help manage acne because i

0:23:45.679,0:23:49.279
think

0:23:47.360,0:23:52.240
and i think most medical experts agree

0:23:49.279,0:23:55.520
that you’re not going to solve acne

0:23:52.240,0:23:57.279
it happens it’s it’s a it’s a chemical

0:23:55.520,0:23:58.799
reaction that your body has from

0:23:57.279,0:24:02.400
hormones

0:23:58.799,0:24:04.159
so it’s less about figuring out how to

0:24:02.400,0:24:06.559
stop it from happening and more about

0:24:04.159,0:24:08.480
how to manage it when it does happen

0:24:06.559,0:24:09.919
and a lot of the techniques that we talk

0:24:08.480,0:24:13.279
about here

0:24:09.919,0:24:15.679
will help to minimize the impact that it

0:24:13.279,0:24:17.360
has on you

0:24:15.679,0:24:20.559
but it won’t prevent acne there’s

0:24:17.360,0:24:22.080
there’s really no known cure for acne

0:24:20.559,0:24:23.919
so let’s take a quick break and we’ll

0:24:22.080,0:24:33.840
come back and we’ll talk about

0:24:23.919,0:24:33.840
how to manage your acne

0:25:36.480,0:25:42.960
welcome back we are talking teen acne

0:25:40.480,0:25:45.039
and we’re talking techniques to manage

0:25:42.960,0:25:47.440
teen acne now as we talked about in our

0:25:45.039,0:25:50.080
opening segment

0:25:47.440,0:25:51.600
acne is often caused from clogged pores

0:25:50.080,0:25:54.400
now the pores will clog

0:25:51.600,0:25:56.640
naturally as your body produces an

0:25:54.400,0:25:58.720
excess amount of oil

0:25:56.640,0:26:00.159
as part of a hormonal reaction as you go

0:25:58.720,0:26:02.799
through puberty

0:26:00.159,0:26:03.520
however during day-to-day activity you

0:26:02.799,0:26:06.240
get dirt

0:26:03.520,0:26:06.559
dust and dead skin and everything else

0:26:06.240,0:26:09.039
that

0:26:06.559,0:26:11.600
attaches itself to your skin too so one

0:26:09.039,0:26:13.440
of the important things they talk about

0:26:11.600,0:26:15.360
is to have your teen use over the

0:26:13.440,0:26:17.760
counter acne products

0:26:15.360,0:26:18.400
and wash problem areas with a gentle

0:26:17.760,0:26:21.360
cleanser

0:26:18.400,0:26:21.840
twice daily and this is something you

0:26:21.360,0:26:24.640
should do

0:26:21.840,0:26:25.679
if you’ve got acne and it will help to

0:26:24.640,0:26:28.320
minimize

0:26:25.679,0:26:30.080
the spread of the acne and it will also

0:26:28.320,0:26:32.960
help to heal the

0:26:30.080,0:26:34.400
the problem areas that you have already

0:26:32.960,0:26:37.120
what else do we have

0:26:34.400,0:26:40.279
uh we also have after washing the skin

0:26:37.120,0:26:42.720
treat with a tropical product containing

0:26:40.279,0:26:45.360
amphetamine

0:26:42.720,0:26:48.480
adipolene adipolene okay adipole so

0:26:45.360,0:26:48.480
that’s that’s like a

0:26:48.640,0:26:54.080
alcohol-based substance

0:26:52.080,0:26:55.840
that helps to do deep cleaning on the

0:26:54.080,0:26:56.960
pores because the thing

0:26:55.840,0:26:59.679
the other thing you have to keep in mind

0:26:56.960,0:27:01.360
is you’re you have dead skin cells you

0:26:59.679,0:27:03.760
produce dead skin cells

0:27:01.360,0:27:04.960
on a regular basis and you replace them

0:27:03.760,0:27:06.960
and so forth

0:27:04.960,0:27:08.960
so by cleaning off those dead skin cells

0:27:06.960,0:27:11.200
it reduces the opportunity for them to

0:27:08.960,0:27:14.240
get clogged into the pores

0:27:11.200,0:27:16.960
and that’s what this substance does

0:27:14.240,0:27:19.440
they say to avoid facial scrubs

0:27:16.960,0:27:21.200
astringents and masks

0:27:19.440,0:27:23.039
as well as excessive scrubbing and

0:27:21.200,0:27:24.559
washing now when we talk about masks

0:27:23.039,0:27:27.440
here we’re not talking about

0:27:24.559,0:27:29.679
you know covered style masks we’re

0:27:27.440,0:27:32.080
talking about the type of facial masks

0:27:29.679,0:27:33.440
that people use women use to exfoliate

0:27:32.080,0:27:36.480
the skin

0:27:33.440,0:27:38.880
and uh you know pull off that dead skin

0:27:36.480,0:27:40.320
oh yeah that’s the kind of mass that

0:27:38.880,0:27:42.240
we’re talking about here so they’re

0:27:40.320,0:27:43.679
saying avoid those

0:27:42.240,0:27:46.240
because one of the things that can

0:27:43.679,0:27:47.600
happen with those and with the scrubbing

0:27:46.240,0:27:49.919
is you can actually break

0:27:47.600,0:27:51.279
open the pores themselves and expose

0:27:49.919,0:27:53.120
them to

0:27:51.279,0:27:56.159
outside dirt and grime and stuff like

0:27:53.120,0:27:56.960
that so you don’t want to exacerbate the

0:27:56.159,0:27:59.120
problem

0:27:56.960,0:28:00.720
by scraping off the protective layer

0:27:59.120,0:28:02.080
that you do have

0:28:00.720,0:28:04.640
that’s kind of what they’re referring to

0:28:02.080,0:28:06.880
here oh what’s number four

0:28:04.640,0:28:08.559
number four is remind your teen to use

0:28:06.880,0:28:10.399
their acne treatment

0:28:08.559,0:28:11.919
but be careful to only remind them

0:28:10.399,0:28:14.559
occasionally

0:28:11.919,0:28:16.000
so you don’t want to nag right yeah what

0:28:14.559,0:28:17.590
happens when daddy dies you you

0:28:16.000,0:28:19.120
just sort of tune me out

0:28:17.590,0:28:20.640
[Music]

0:28:19.120,0:28:23.360
and your acne treatment could be over

0:28:20.640,0:28:24.559
the counter it could be a prescription

0:28:23.360,0:28:26.000
uh you just want to make sure that

0:28:24.559,0:28:27.440
they’re they’re keeping up with their

0:28:26.000,0:28:30.080
treatments just like

0:28:27.440,0:28:31.039
any other kind of medication but you

0:28:30.080,0:28:34.559
don’t want to be a

0:28:31.039,0:28:36.000
pain in the neck about yeah because

0:28:34.559,0:28:37.919
you know everyone knows i can be a pain

0:28:36.000,0:28:41.039
in the neck regardless of

0:28:37.919,0:28:45.520
whether we’re talking acne or not yep

0:28:41.039,0:28:47.200
don’t touch or pick at problem areas

0:28:45.520,0:28:49.279
and this is something that i think a lot

0:28:47.200,0:28:53.039
of people tend to have problems with

0:28:49.279,0:28:55.679
is i’m the type of person i

0:28:53.039,0:28:56.159
if i have a sore or a scratch or a bug

0:28:55.679,0:28:57.919
bite

0:28:56.159,0:29:01.279
i’m constantly picking at it and

0:28:57.919,0:29:05.360
scratching it and making it worse

0:29:01.279,0:29:07.679
it’s just i don’t know human nature

0:29:05.360,0:29:08.880
but the problem you have is when you do

0:29:07.679,0:29:10.799
that

0:29:08.880,0:29:12.720
your fingers and your hands are dirty

0:29:10.799,0:29:13.600
they have germs they have bacteria on

0:29:12.720,0:29:16.080
them

0:29:13.600,0:29:17.840
so as you’re touching these areas you’re

0:29:16.080,0:29:19.600
inducing

0:29:17.840,0:29:22.240
more of a problem to an area that’s

0:29:19.600,0:29:25.520
already infected with something

0:29:22.240,0:29:26.640
or you’re you’re inducing germs and

0:29:25.520,0:29:28.399
bacteria

0:29:26.640,0:29:30.159
to parts of your skin that might not be

0:29:28.399,0:29:32.960
affected

0:29:30.159,0:29:34.240
that will now become infected so you

0:29:32.960,0:29:36.000
don’t want to do that you want to make

0:29:34.240,0:29:38.240
sure that you try to keep things clean

0:29:36.000,0:29:40.080
even when you’re doing your regular

0:29:38.240,0:29:41.600
cleansing activities make sure you wash

0:29:40.080,0:29:44.399
your hands first

0:29:41.600,0:29:46.559
before you apply anything even if you’re

0:29:44.399,0:29:48.399
popping a pimple make sure you

0:29:46.559,0:29:50.480
you wash your hands before you pop a

0:29:48.399,0:29:52.320
pimple make sure you have

0:29:50.480,0:29:54.080
a skin cleanser or something like that

0:29:52.320,0:29:56.640
or peroxide or something to apply

0:29:54.080,0:29:57.760
to it after you popped it you want to

0:29:56.640,0:30:00.159
make sure

0:29:57.760,0:30:01.919
you know it’s medical just like surgery

0:30:00.159,0:30:02.640
everything that that’s exposed to the

0:30:01.919,0:30:06.000
air from

0:30:02.640,0:30:08.960
inside your body needs to be cleansed

0:30:06.000,0:30:10.559
what’s number six number six is your

0:30:08.960,0:30:13.679
teen should use shampoo

0:30:10.559,0:30:16.720
every day do you use shampoo every day

0:30:13.679,0:30:17.919
well when i shower but you don’t shower

0:30:16.720,0:30:20.399
every day right

0:30:17.919,0:30:23.200
yeah what’s it like every other day or

0:30:20.399,0:30:25.919
so at this point and as you get older

0:30:23.200,0:30:27.120
and your body starts to mature and

0:30:25.919,0:30:31.200
starts to produce

0:30:27.120,0:30:34.559
more bodily fluids it’ll say

0:30:31.200,0:30:36.240
uh sweat and so forth

0:30:34.559,0:30:39.440
you’re picking up that face and you’re

0:30:36.240,0:30:41.919
going to keep picking up that piece

0:30:39.440,0:30:42.960
but shampoo because one of the areas

0:30:41.919,0:30:45.840
that produces

0:30:42.960,0:30:47.279
a lot of oil are your hair follicles

0:30:45.840,0:30:49.200
that’s why if you go without

0:30:47.279,0:30:51.840
showering for a few days your hair

0:30:49.200,0:30:54.240
starts to get very greasy

0:30:51.840,0:30:55.760
because it produces a protective coating

0:30:54.240,0:30:58.880
on your hair

0:30:55.760,0:30:59.679
but that protective coating can also you

0:30:58.880,0:31:01.039
know

0:30:59.679,0:31:03.360
spread from your hair like for instance

0:31:01.039,0:31:07.120
you have long hair obviously

0:31:03.360,0:31:08.960
so if you let your hair down

0:31:07.120,0:31:11.120
and it’s rubbing against your face and

0:31:08.960,0:31:12.080
your cheeks and your ears and everything

0:31:11.120,0:31:14.320
else

0:31:12.080,0:31:15.919
it’s got oil on it so it’s rubbing that

0:31:14.320,0:31:18.799
oil all over your

0:31:15.919,0:31:20.080
skin you’re you’re fortunate enough that

0:31:18.799,0:31:21.600
you tend to keep your hair back for the

0:31:20.080,0:31:23.200
most part

0:31:21.600,0:31:24.640
so any area that’s really exposed to

0:31:23.200,0:31:26.880
that’s really probably the back of your

0:31:24.640,0:31:29.519
neck that you’d have to worry about

0:31:26.880,0:31:30.000
but other people tend to keep their hair

0:31:29.519,0:31:32.320
you know

0:31:30.000,0:31:34.240
down and loose and that’s where that

0:31:32.320,0:31:37.279
problem comes from so by using

0:31:34.240,0:31:40.000
shampoo on a regular basis you keep

0:31:37.279,0:31:42.559
cleansing that oil off of the skin

0:31:40.000,0:31:44.000
it also helps to prevent the hair

0:31:42.559,0:31:46.159
follicles from producing an

0:31:44.000,0:31:47.840
excess amount of oil too as you keep

0:31:46.159,0:31:50.640
removing the oil from

0:31:47.840,0:31:52.880
the hair so just something to keep in

0:31:50.640,0:31:55.840
mind

0:31:52.880,0:31:56.880
number seven shower after activities

0:31:55.840,0:31:59.760
that cause sweat

0:31:56.880,0:32:00.080
and oil production and i think you do

0:31:59.760,0:32:02.320
this

0:32:00.080,0:32:04.080
because as you when you do your gym

0:32:02.320,0:32:05.519
class and stuff like that if you get

0:32:04.080,0:32:06.080
very sweaty you’re going to go get a

0:32:05.519,0:32:09.279
shower because

0:32:06.080,0:32:11.039
you just feel uncomfortable right do you

0:32:09.279,0:32:13.039
have a situation or have you had

0:32:11.039,0:32:15.519
situations where

0:32:13.039,0:32:17.760
you’ve done a strenuous exercise and

0:32:15.519,0:32:21.279
then not got the shower afterwards

0:32:17.760,0:32:24.240
uh sometimes yeah and and does that have

0:32:21.279,0:32:25.200
any kind of negative effect on the acne

0:32:24.240,0:32:28.320
i mean

0:32:25.200,0:32:32.240
it might i’m not entirely sure um

0:32:28.320,0:32:34.720
i haven’t had like a verdict um because

0:32:32.240,0:32:35.360
like i haven’t done like a full-on exp

0:32:34.720,0:32:37.039
like

0:32:35.360,0:32:38.720
i haven’t done a full-on scientific

0:32:37.039,0:32:41.919
method experiment on it yet

0:32:38.720,0:32:42.480
so uh is there any activity you do that

0:32:41.919,0:32:46.399
you see

0:32:42.480,0:32:49.519
does cause an increase in acne um

0:32:46.399,0:32:52.240
not that i know of my acne’s

0:32:49.519,0:32:53.600
kind of like i kind of said before my

0:32:52.240,0:32:56.000
acne like

0:32:53.600,0:32:58.159
it’s kind of the same most the time

0:32:56.000,0:33:00.080
right um

0:32:58.159,0:33:02.159
so and the act that you have is is

0:33:00.080,0:33:04.240
fairly mild so you’re very fortunate

0:33:02.159,0:33:06.480
when it comes to that

0:33:04.240,0:33:08.399
what’s number eight number eight is

0:33:06.480,0:33:10.799
treat acne early

0:33:08.399,0:33:12.000
yes this is important because if you

0:33:10.799,0:33:14.559
don’t treat it early

0:33:12.000,0:33:17.519
it’s one of these things that has what’s

0:33:14.559,0:33:20.720
what we refer to as a cascade effect

0:33:17.519,0:33:22.880
so the more you have the more you get

0:33:20.720,0:33:25.600
so if you don’t control it early it can

0:33:22.880,0:33:28.880
very quickly get out of control

0:33:25.600,0:33:30.320
so when it starts to sprout that’s a key

0:33:28.880,0:33:33.519
to you

0:33:30.320,0:33:34.480
that one your skin’s conducive to it so

0:33:33.519,0:33:36.000
that you need to take

0:33:34.480,0:33:37.679
proper steps to make sure you keep your

0:33:36.000,0:33:41.360
skin clean

0:33:37.679,0:33:42.880
and the other is that if you have it now

0:33:41.360,0:33:44.559
and you don’t treat it then it’s going

0:33:42.880,0:33:47.360
to get worse

0:33:44.559,0:33:49.919
so it’s almost like a warning sign at

0:33:47.360,0:33:52.960
that point

0:33:49.919,0:33:54.240
number nine is to protect the skin from

0:33:52.960,0:33:57.440
the sun now this is

0:33:54.240,0:33:57.440
kind of an interesting one

0:33:58.240,0:34:04.080
people that have certain skin conditions

0:34:02.000,0:34:05.279
it’s recommended that they get light

0:34:04.080,0:34:07.840
treatments

0:34:05.279,0:34:08.480
where the ultraviolet light from the sun

0:34:07.840,0:34:11.520
or from

0:34:08.480,0:34:13.119
from a lamp can actually help with some

0:34:11.520,0:34:17.200
of their skin conditions

0:34:13.119,0:34:20.399
when it comes to acne though

0:34:17.200,0:34:22.480
the direct sunlight can actually cause

0:34:20.399,0:34:25.280
skin cells to die your surface skin

0:34:22.480,0:34:26.720
cells will die

0:34:25.280,0:34:28.800
this is what happens when you get

0:34:26.720,0:34:32.399
sunburned for instance

0:34:28.800,0:34:32.879
so the idea of protecting the skin from

0:34:32.399,0:34:35.919
the sun

0:34:32.879,0:34:38.399
is to avoid the excess

0:34:35.919,0:34:39.280
of dead skin cells so that you reduce

0:34:38.399,0:34:42.800
the chances

0:34:39.280,0:34:46.159
of clogging up your pores okay

0:34:42.800,0:34:49.679
if for instance you are at the beach

0:34:46.159,0:34:51.359
or outside of the pool

0:34:49.679,0:34:54.720
you’re probably going to put some kind

0:34:51.359,0:34:56.879
of sunblock on as well

0:34:54.720,0:34:58.400
and any chemicals that you apply to your

0:34:56.879,0:35:02.720
face whether it’s makeup

0:34:58.400,0:35:04.880
sunscreen suntan oil whatever it is

0:35:02.720,0:35:05.920
that has the potential to cause your

0:35:04.880,0:35:08.960
skin to

0:35:05.920,0:35:11.040
your pores to clog up as well um if

0:35:08.960,0:35:13.599
you’re swimming in a pool the chlorine

0:35:11.040,0:35:14.960
can get into your skin and get into your

0:35:13.599,0:35:17.599
poor

0:35:14.960,0:35:18.079
uh if you’re down at the ocean the sea

0:35:17.599,0:35:20.720
water

0:35:18.079,0:35:22.079
you know there’s there’s tons of various

0:35:20.720,0:35:24.160
chemicals and minerals that are

0:35:22.079,0:35:25.680
in the ocean that can then get into your

0:35:24.160,0:35:29.119
pores as well

0:35:25.680,0:35:30.000
so should you go out in the sun for a

0:35:29.119,0:35:31.920
period of time and do

0:35:30.000,0:35:33.119
any of these activities it’s very

0:35:31.920,0:35:33.760
important that when you’re out of the

0:35:33.119,0:35:35.680
sun you

0:35:33.760,0:35:37.040
you go through that cleansing process

0:35:35.680,0:35:37.440
again and make sure you get all that

0:35:37.040,0:35:38.250
stuff

0:35:37.440,0:35:41.040
off of your skin

0:35:38.250,0:35:44.960
[Music]

0:35:41.040,0:35:48.000
what is what are we on number 10

0:35:44.960,0:35:49.200
so number 10 is avoid excessive amounts

0:35:48.000,0:35:50.640
of cosmetics

0:35:49.200,0:35:53.359
that kind of goes back to what i was

0:35:50.640,0:35:55.599
saying you know the fewer chemicals that

0:35:53.359,0:35:57.280
you can put on your skin the better off

0:35:55.599,0:36:00.079
you are

0:35:57.280,0:36:00.870
all this stuff can cause problems even

0:36:00.079,0:36:02.400
even you know

0:36:00.870,0:36:04.960
[Music]

0:36:02.400,0:36:06.720
perfume you know if you apply perfume or

0:36:04.960,0:36:08.000
deodorant it’s an aerosol-based

0:36:06.720,0:36:10.720
deodorant

0:36:08.000,0:36:12.800
you know it gets in the air and it gets

0:36:10.720,0:36:15.200
on your skin

0:36:12.800,0:36:17.599
so if you have acne you probably want to

0:36:15.200,0:36:18.640
use a roll-on or a stick deodorant so

0:36:17.599,0:36:20.960
you can avoid

0:36:18.640,0:36:23.119
putting that excess chemical in the air

0:36:20.960,0:36:25.760
to get on your skin

0:36:23.119,0:36:28.079
do you use aerosol deodorant or roll-on

0:36:25.760,0:36:31.119
no i use roll-on right now

0:36:28.079,0:36:34.000
and that’s probably the safest thing i

0:36:31.119,0:36:35.280
tend to use aerosol and and you can see

0:36:34.000,0:36:36.800
like especially if you stand in front of

0:36:35.280,0:36:39.280
a window when you spray you

0:36:36.800,0:36:40.960
see the gas you know with the propellant

0:36:39.280,0:36:44.240
that comes out and everything

0:36:40.960,0:36:46.320
all that stuff can cause problems

0:36:44.240,0:36:47.520
so number 11 they say protect skin from

0:36:46.320,0:36:50.720
items that create

0:36:47.520,0:36:52.400
friction or cause pressure glasses is an

0:36:50.720,0:36:54.320
example of this

0:36:52.400,0:36:55.839
when you wear glasses all the time you

0:36:54.320,0:36:57.520
you have pressure on the bridge of your

0:36:55.839,0:36:58.480
nose you could have it down underneath

0:36:57.520,0:37:02.320
your eyes

0:36:58.480,0:37:05.520
depending on how it sits on your

0:37:02.320,0:37:06.240
on your face a headphones is another one

0:37:05.520,0:37:08.000
if you wear

0:37:06.240,0:37:09.440
over-the-ear headphones a lot to listen

0:37:08.000,0:37:11.680
to music

0:37:09.440,0:37:13.280
you let you have over your headphones on

0:37:11.680,0:37:14.800
an hour a week i don’t think that’s

0:37:13.280,0:37:16.560
excessive

0:37:14.800,0:37:18.240
there are those who don’t use earbuds

0:37:16.560,0:37:20.320
but even earbuds could cause

0:37:18.240,0:37:23.280
pressure and problems with pimples

0:37:20.320,0:37:24.960
inside the ear like you’ve run into

0:37:23.280,0:37:26.720
but over the year headphones can if you

0:37:24.960,0:37:28.400
wear a hat a lot

0:37:26.720,0:37:30.320
there are people that like to wear keep

0:37:28.400,0:37:31.440
their heads covered especially in the

0:37:30.320,0:37:33.839
winter time

0:37:31.440,0:37:36.079
so in the winter time what happens is

0:37:33.839,0:37:37.520
your skin dries out

0:37:36.079,0:37:39.599
because you have the heat on them in the

0:37:37.520,0:37:42.079
house and

0:37:39.599,0:37:42.720
most heat like we have forced air heat

0:37:42.079,0:37:46.079
here

0:37:42.720,0:37:47.839
it’s a dry heat so it dries the skin out

0:37:46.079,0:37:50.000
which can open the pores up and then you

0:37:47.839,0:37:53.200
put a hat on when you go outside so that

0:37:50.000,0:37:55.680
the oil that your body secretes doesn’t

0:37:53.200,0:37:57.599
have a chance to evaporate

0:37:55.680,0:37:59.680
so what happens is it clings to the skin

0:37:57.599,0:38:02.800
can clog the pores up

0:37:59.680,0:38:04.240
so again another good example of when

0:38:02.800,0:38:06.000
you should make sure that you’re keeping

0:38:04.240,0:38:08.160
your skin clean

0:38:06.000,0:38:09.920
and keeping it well treated now the

0:38:08.160,0:38:10.480
winter time you might see your acne drop

0:38:09.920,0:38:13.680
off a bit

0:38:10.480,0:38:15.920
because it’s so dry because that dryness

0:38:13.680,0:38:17.680
of the air will cause the oil itself to

0:38:15.920,0:38:20.560
evaporate but when it evaporates it

0:38:17.680,0:38:22.400
still leaves a residue on the skin

0:38:20.560,0:38:24.400
so the moisture part of it will

0:38:22.400,0:38:28.480
evaporate

0:38:24.400,0:38:31.760
okay just like when you sweat

0:38:28.480,0:38:33.680
same thing when you sweat

0:38:31.760,0:38:35.200
it’s not just water that you’re

0:38:33.680,0:38:36.079
excreting from your body there’s

0:38:35.200,0:38:39.760
chemicals there’s

0:38:36.079,0:38:42.320
there’s salts that excrete and when

0:38:39.760,0:38:44.400
you sweat the whole purpose of of

0:38:42.320,0:38:46.560
sweating is to cool the body

0:38:44.400,0:38:48.320
and it cools the body by evaporating

0:38:46.560,0:38:51.040
that liquid off of your skin

0:38:48.320,0:38:54.000
every time a drop of sweat evaporates it

0:38:51.040,0:38:55.839
takes a little bit of the heat with it

0:38:54.000,0:38:58.560
the problem is is that it doesn’t take

0:38:55.839,0:39:00.880
those chemicals with it those salts

0:38:58.560,0:39:02.720
so if you’re out and working out and

0:39:00.880,0:39:05.680
sweating when your body dries you’ll

0:39:02.720,0:39:07.599
feel almost like a crust on your body

0:39:05.680,0:39:09.200
and that’s those salts that your body

0:39:07.599,0:39:10.880
excretes and that’s what can clog the

0:39:09.200,0:39:12.800
pores up

0:39:10.880,0:39:14.800
so that’s why it’s very important when

0:39:12.800,0:39:16.800
you’re when the oil is excreted and it

0:39:14.800,0:39:18.640
evaporates off it leaves chemicals

0:39:16.800,0:39:20.800
behind as well

0:39:18.640,0:39:23.040
so again very important to keep those

0:39:20.800,0:39:24.640
things clean

0:39:23.040,0:39:26.640
and the last thing that they talk about

0:39:24.640,0:39:29.680
here is help your teen

0:39:26.640,0:39:31.280
manage and reduce stress

0:39:29.680,0:39:33.599
now we haven’t talked about this at all

0:39:31.280,0:39:34.480
yet you know we’ve talked about the

0:39:33.599,0:39:37.680
chemical

0:39:34.480,0:39:40.880
effects of puberty and so forth but

0:39:37.680,0:39:44.720
stress is another thing that can cause

0:39:40.880,0:39:46.000
acne and and do you have any idea why

0:39:44.720,0:39:49.440
that is

0:39:46.000,0:39:50.640
um no not really well the main reason

0:39:49.440,0:39:52.800
for that is that

0:39:50.640,0:39:54.079
it causes a chemical imbalance in the

0:39:52.800,0:39:57.839
body

0:39:54.079,0:39:59.839
your body excretes chemicals uh it’ll

0:39:57.839,0:40:02.400
when you’re stressed out you can your

0:39:59.839,0:40:05.839
body will burn through adrenaline

0:40:02.400,0:40:08.160
you’ll your body will generate

0:40:05.839,0:40:09.359
endorphins to help you cope with the

0:40:08.160,0:40:11.359
stress

0:40:09.359,0:40:12.480
and all these chemical changes that

0:40:11.359,0:40:15.680
happen

0:40:12.480,0:40:18.079
as a result of stress are manifested

0:40:15.680,0:40:20.079
externally in your body you may sweat

0:40:18.079,0:40:22.560
you’re nervous and stressed out

0:40:20.079,0:40:24.480
you might get sweaty palms you might get

0:40:22.560,0:40:25.599
heat flashes or something like that as a

0:40:24.480,0:40:27.359
result

0:40:25.599,0:40:30.400
of all the chemicals that are firing off

0:40:27.359,0:40:32.640
in your body to deal with that stress

0:40:30.400,0:40:34.319
so stressful situations can actually

0:40:32.640,0:40:36.319
cause

0:40:34.319,0:40:37.680
acne just as much as stressful

0:40:36.319,0:40:40.560
situations

0:40:37.680,0:40:42.319
can cause issues with your heart or

0:40:40.560,0:40:43.440
other parts of your body as your body

0:40:42.319,0:40:46.960
tends to

0:40:43.440,0:40:49.680
try and cope with it so

0:40:46.960,0:40:52.079
they were the 12 things that we had for

0:40:49.680,0:40:54.319
coping or managing with stress

0:40:52.079,0:40:57.119
did you have anything to to add or any

0:40:54.319,0:41:00.720
questions or anything

0:40:57.119,0:41:03.200
not really um i

0:41:00.720,0:41:05.040
i have found i have been learning though

0:41:03.200,0:41:07.200
that a lot of stuff that you did

0:41:05.040,0:41:10.640
originally you need to stop

0:41:07.200,0:41:13.359
yeah like don’t go swimming anywhere

0:41:10.640,0:41:14.800
don’t go outside oh you don’t have to do

0:41:13.359,0:41:16.640
that like

0:41:14.800,0:41:18.480
the i guess the point is is that if

0:41:16.640,0:41:20.560
you’re going to do things you just have

0:41:18.480,0:41:23.040
to be mindful of the effects that the

0:41:20.560,0:41:26.720
after effects that they have

0:41:23.040,0:41:29.119
you know if you’re gonna go swimming

0:41:26.720,0:41:31.200
when you get done you should rinse that

0:41:29.119,0:41:33.599
that chlorine off of your body

0:41:31.200,0:41:35.280
you know if you’re if you go to the

0:41:33.599,0:41:37.839
beach for instance

0:41:35.280,0:41:39.359
you’ll find that if you go to the beach

0:41:37.839,0:41:41.040
you leave the beach they usually have

0:41:39.359,0:41:44.079
these shower areas

0:41:41.040,0:41:45.359
outside the beach that allow you to wash

0:41:44.079,0:41:47.920
all that stuff off

0:41:45.359,0:41:49.040
it could be as simple as that or it

0:41:47.920,0:41:51.680
could be as simple as

0:41:49.040,0:41:53.200
i got out of this i got out of the pool

0:41:51.680,0:41:55.040
let me go take a shower just to make

0:41:53.200,0:41:58.480
sure i got everything off of me

0:41:55.040,0:41:59.839
all right so it’s about knowing what to

0:41:58.480,0:42:00.960
do if you’re gonna do these things if

0:41:59.839,0:42:02.400
you wear makeup

0:42:00.960,0:42:04.240
you know when mommy was going to work

0:42:02.400,0:42:05.839
she would she would put makeup on every

0:42:04.240,0:42:07.359
day to go out

0:42:05.839,0:42:10.400
it’s about coming home at the end of the

0:42:07.359,0:42:13.440
day and cleaning that makeup off using

0:42:10.400,0:42:16.160
the proper tools to clean the makeup off

0:42:13.440,0:42:17.599
if you do gym class and you get home and

0:42:16.160,0:42:19.119
you’re all sweaty and gym clean

0:42:17.599,0:42:19.839
especially if it’s the middle of summer

0:42:19.119,0:42:21.359
or you know

0:42:19.839,0:42:22.880
in the summer time in june and you’re in

0:42:21.359,0:42:24.480
gym class

0:42:22.880,0:42:27.920
and you get home from school and you’re

0:42:24.480,0:42:29.680
sweating go take a shower

0:42:27.920,0:42:31.920
it’s it’s simple things like that that i

0:42:29.680,0:42:35.599
think go a long way

0:42:31.920,0:42:37.200
now do you do anything for your acne now

0:42:35.599,0:42:39.760
is there any kind of treatment or

0:42:37.200,0:42:41.200
special care that you take or anything i

0:42:39.760,0:42:44.400
mean there is this soap

0:42:41.200,0:42:47.599
that um i can wash my face with

0:42:44.400,0:42:50.880
and of course i also shower in order to

0:42:47.599,0:42:52.960
um have my um body get clean and

0:42:50.880,0:42:53.440
sometimes when i don’t use the soap i

0:42:52.960,0:42:57.440
just

0:42:53.440,0:42:58.960
wash my face with a washcloth and water

0:42:57.440,0:43:00.560
but i know that i should probably be

0:42:58.960,0:43:03.119
using the soap more than that

0:43:00.560,0:43:03.920
so well even that even that approach

0:43:03.119,0:43:06.960
works just

0:43:03.920,0:43:09.680
just a damp cloth to wipe off any

0:43:06.960,0:43:10.640
excess chemicals or sweat or anything

0:43:09.680,0:43:13.359
that’s on your skin

0:43:10.640,0:43:14.880
is a step in the right direction now the

0:43:13.359,0:43:16.640
soap that you use is it

0:43:14.880,0:43:18.400
a prescription soap or is it over the

0:43:16.640,0:43:20.240
counter over the counter

0:43:18.400,0:43:21.920
so it’s something that anybody can use

0:43:20.240,0:43:23.760
at that point

0:43:21.920,0:43:26.319
and i think that’s the way to go and how

0:43:23.760,0:43:30.079
often do you wash your face

0:43:26.319,0:43:32.000
when i remember to which isn’t a lot

0:43:30.079,0:43:33.599
okay so that’s one area that we can

0:43:32.000,0:43:36.640
improve on that might help

0:43:33.599,0:43:38.240
yeah they’re saying you know twice a day

0:43:36.640,0:43:40.400
you should be doing this

0:43:38.240,0:43:42.560
that might be excessive depending on on

0:43:40.400,0:43:44.319
the effect that the soap has

0:43:42.560,0:43:47.119
some of the medicated soaps can dry your

0:43:44.319,0:43:48.720
skin out too much and be uncomfortable

0:43:47.119,0:43:50.560
and you don’t want to make the situation

0:43:48.720,0:43:53.440
worse you don’t want to

0:43:50.560,0:43:56.240
replace one problem with another in

0:43:53.440,0:43:58.720
order to solve the first one

0:43:56.240,0:44:00.560
but if things get to the point where you

0:43:58.720,0:44:02.000
can’t manage them

0:44:00.560,0:44:04.240
or if they’re uncomfortable or if

0:44:02.000,0:44:06.000
they’re having any of these psychosocial

0:44:04.240,0:44:07.520
effects or physical effects that we

0:44:06.000,0:44:10.400
talked about

0:44:07.520,0:44:10.880
you should probably see a doctor there’s

0:44:10.400,0:44:14.240
a

0:44:10.880,0:44:14.880
lot of various medications that can be

0:44:14.240,0:44:16.160
used

0:44:14.880,0:44:18.720
these days in different techniques

0:44:16.160,0:44:22.319
there’s even you know there’s even

0:44:18.720,0:44:24.720
techniques where they use co2

0:44:22.319,0:44:25.760
liquid co2 to actually freeze the skin

0:44:24.720,0:44:27.920
cells

0:44:25.760,0:44:30.160
and can actually remove the dead skin

0:44:27.920,0:44:32.560
cells forcefully that way to

0:44:30.160,0:44:34.560
to ease the thing one of the weirdest

0:44:32.560,0:44:37.520
ones i ever heard

0:44:34.560,0:44:38.400
and it was it worked and this was one

0:44:37.520,0:44:41.200
that i told

0:44:38.400,0:44:43.760
the woman that i’d work with whose

0:44:41.200,0:44:45.680
daughter had severe acne

0:44:43.760,0:44:47.920
it was and this is gonna sound

0:44:45.680,0:44:52.000
disgusting

0:44:47.920,0:44:55.520
baby urine yeah

0:44:52.000,0:44:58.079
so baby urine

0:44:55.520,0:45:00.960
that is applied to the face and left on

0:44:58.079,0:45:05.839
for 15 minutes and washed off

0:45:00.960,0:45:05.839
had a miraculous effect on her daughter

0:45:06.240,0:45:09.760
the the her other daughter had a had an

0:45:08.640,0:45:12.240
infant and

0:45:09.760,0:45:13.839
they would put cloth diapers on her and

0:45:12.240,0:45:16.880
when the baby

0:45:13.839,0:45:18.720
urinated just urinate it not defecated

0:45:16.880,0:45:20.960
just urinated

0:45:18.720,0:45:21.920
she would actually apply it to her face

0:45:20.960,0:45:24.560
and

0:45:21.920,0:45:27.040
she saw a marked improvement in her acne

0:45:24.560,0:45:30.720
within the first three weeks

0:45:27.040,0:45:32.079
now whether that’s the ammonia that’s in

0:45:30.720,0:45:36.160
the urine or something

0:45:32.079,0:45:38.079
else i don’t know you could probably i’m

0:45:36.160,0:45:38.880
guessing you could probably recreate the

0:45:38.079,0:45:43.200
same effect

0:45:38.880,0:45:45.440
using the the raw chemicals

0:45:43.200,0:45:47.119
but that was an old wives tale she tried

0:45:45.440,0:45:50.079
and it worked and i’m not saying it

0:45:47.119,0:45:50.079
works for everybody

0:45:50.720,0:45:54.640
but it’s worthwhile if if you’re

0:45:52.960,0:45:56.240
suffering from acne it’s worthwhile to

0:45:54.640,0:45:58.880
go out and do the research

0:45:56.240,0:46:00.000
seek the professional help there’s

0:45:58.880,0:46:03.520
there’s solutions out

0:46:00.000,0:46:04.880
there you know don’t let it become don’t

0:46:03.520,0:46:06.960
let it take over

0:46:04.880,0:46:08.160
don’t let it make you depressed don’t

0:46:06.960,0:46:09.760
let it

0:46:08.160,0:46:11.680
stop you from doing the things that you

0:46:09.760,0:46:12.160
want to do there’s a solution out there

0:46:11.680,0:46:14.319
and

0:46:12.160,0:46:15.680
and you’ll find one eventually and if

0:46:14.319,0:46:17.760
not

0:46:15.680,0:46:19.200
you’ll eventually grow out of it and

0:46:17.760,0:46:20.319
that’s that sort of thing there’s light

0:46:19.200,0:46:21.920
there’s always light at the end of the

0:46:20.319,0:46:24.960
tunnel i think that’s the most important

0:46:21.920,0:46:26.880
thing when it comes to acne

0:46:24.960,0:46:29.280
so that was all we had for today we’ll

0:46:26.880,0:46:31.599
come back after a very quick break

0:46:29.280,0:46:33.810
and we’ll give you your closing remarks

0:46:31.599,0:46:38.880
and shout outs

0:46:33.810,0:46:42.560
[Music]

0:46:38.880,0:46:45.280
go for closing remarks okay so to anyone

0:46:42.560,0:46:46.720
out there who is suffering from acne

0:46:45.280,0:46:48.480
i’m kind of just gonna sound like a

0:46:46.720,0:46:50.079
broken record here kind of repeating

0:46:48.480,0:46:51.599
what you already said

0:46:50.079,0:46:53.839
you should definitely seek some medical

0:46:51.599,0:46:56.000
help especially if it’s severe

0:46:53.839,0:46:57.200
and if it’s just mild stuff and you’re

0:46:56.000,0:46:59.599
still like me

0:46:57.200,0:47:02.079
and you still have the acne you should

0:46:59.599,0:47:04.960
still clean it in order to

0:47:02.079,0:47:05.760
manage it and hey when you get older

0:47:04.960,0:47:09.200
hopefully

0:47:05.760,0:47:12.240
um it’ll be gone okay

0:47:09.200,0:47:15.119
sage words of advice there

0:47:12.240,0:47:17.839
um before we go we just need to finish
