Everyone has or will have to face the prospect of mental, physical or emotional burn out at some point in their lives. With the stress of school and pressures of socializing at an awkward age many teens reach a burn out phase early on. In this episode we’ll look at some of the signs and symptoms to keep an eye on. We’ll talk about some of the common causes of burn out. We will also look at ways to cope with burn out and how to recover from it while also understanding that burn out and stress, while they may be linked are two different and distinct problems to deal with.

- The Definition of Burn Out
- https://www.helpguide.org/articles/stress/burnout-prevention-and-recovery.htm#:~:text=Burnout%20is%20a%20state%20of,unable%20to%20meet%20constant%20demands.

- Burnout is a state of emotional, physical and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress.
- It occurs when you feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and unable to meet constant demands. As the stress continues, you begin to lose the interest and motivation that led you to take on a certain role in the first place.
- The negative effects of burnout spill over into every area of life, whether it be your home, work, and social life. Burnout can also cause long-term changes to your body
[AD 1]
- [SEGMENT 2 (10-15 minutes)]
- Signs and Symptoms of Burnout
Burnout is a gradual process. It doesn’t happen overnight but it can creep on you. You should look out for these symptoms if you fear you might have burn out.
- Signs and Symptoms of Burnout
- You could be close to burnout if:
- Every day is a bad day.
- Caring about your work or home life seems like a total waste of energy.
- You’re exhausted all the time.
- The majority of your day is spent on tasks you find either mind-numbingly dull or overwhelming.
- You feel like nothing you do makes a difference or is appreciated.
- Most days you might feel helpless and overwhelmed
- Physical Symptoms
- Feeling tired and drained most of the time.
- Frequent headaches and muscle pain.
- Lowered immunity, frequent illness.
- Change in appetite and sleep habits.
- Emotional Symptoms
- Sense of failure and self-doubt
- Loss of motivation.
- Feeling helpless, trapped, and defeated.
- Increasingly cynical and negative outlook.
- Detachment, feeling alone in the world.
- Decreased satisfaction and sense of accomplishment.
- Behavioral Symptoms
- Withdrawing from responsibility.
- Using food, drugs, or alcohol to cope.
- Isolating yourself from others.
- Taking out your frustrations on others.
- Procrastinating, taking longer to get things done.
- Skipping work or coming in late and leaving early.
- The difference between stress and burnout.
- Stress involves too much everything. Too many pressures, too much of you physically and mentally. Burnout, on the other hand, is about not enough. Being burned out means feeling empty and mentally exhausted and demote of motivation.
- While people who are stressed see some hope of recovering to change their situation, people who are burned out see no hope of a positive change to their situation. While you may be aware that you are stressed, most people don’t notice when burnout happens.
[AD 2]

- High-achieving, Type A personality.
[TRANSITION]
- [SEGMENT 4 (10-15 Minutes)]
- Dealing with Burnout
- 1. Turn to Others.
- When you’re burned out, it’s difficult to take action or even care to try to help yourself. But, there are positive steps you can take to deal with overwhelming stress and get your life balanced. One way is to reach out to others.
- Social contact is nature’s antidote to stress and talking face to face with a good listener is one of the fastest ways to calm your nervous system. Here are some people you can reach out to.
- The person closest to you; such as your partner, family, and friends. Opening up won’t make you a burden to others. In fact, most friends and family would be flattered that you trust them enough to confide in them, strengthening your relationship with them.
- Be sociable with your co-workers; Developing friendships with the people you work with can help buffer you from job burnout. When you take a break, instead of directing your attention to your smartphone, try engaging your colleagues.
- Limit contact with negative people; Hanging out with negative-minded people who do nothing but complain will only drag down your mood and outlook. If you have to work with a negative person, try to limit the amount of time you spend together.
- Reframe the Way You Look at Work
- Whether you have a job that leaves you rushed or one that is unfulfilling, the most effective way to combat job burnout is to quit and find a job you love instead. Of course, for many of us, changing our job is far from being a practical solution. We have work to pay the bills. Whatever your situation, though, there are still steps you can take to improve your state of mind.
- Try to find some value in your work; Even in some mundane jobs, you can often focus on how your role helps others or provides a much-needed product or service. Focus on aspects of the job that you do enjoy, even if it’s just chatting with your coworkers at lunch. Changing your attitude towards your job can help you regain a sense of purpose and control.
- Dealing with Burnout
- Find balance in your life; If you hate your job, look for meaning and satisfaction elsewhere in your life, like in your family, friends, hobbies, or voluntary work. Focus on the parts of your life that bring you joy.
- Make friends at work; Having strong ties in the workplace can help reduce the counter the effects of burnout. Having friends to chat and joke with during the day can help relieve stress from an unfulfilling or demanding job, improve your job performance, or simply get you through a rough day.
- Take time off; If burnout seems inevitable, try to take a complete break from work. Go on vacation, use up your sick days, ask for a temporary leave-of-absence, anything to remove yourself from the situation. Use the time away to recharge your batteries and pursue other methods of recovery.

0:01:06.159,0:01:09.920
doing all right
0:01:08.000,0:01:12.080
so today we are going to be talking
0:01:09.920,0:01:14.159
about burnout and this was something
0:01:12.080,0:01:17.280
that i had recommended
0:01:14.159,0:01:19.920
um for a podcast idea which is why i’m
0:01:17.280,0:01:22.720
once again hosting just like last week
0:01:19.920,0:01:25.600
very good so today we are going to be
0:01:22.720,0:01:27.439
talking about the definition of burnout
0:01:25.600,0:01:29.360
and what burnout is
0:01:27.439,0:01:30.479
we are going to look at the signs and
0:01:29.360,0:01:33.680
symptoms of
0:01:30.479,0:01:37.280
burnout with the different physical
0:01:33.680,0:01:37.280
emotional and behavioral
0:01:38.479,0:01:44.320
signs and symptoms sorry then we’re
0:01:41.119,0:01:46.880
going to look at the causes of burnout
0:01:44.320,0:01:47.439
and then we’re going to look at the at
0:01:46.880,0:01:51.600
dealing
0:01:47.439,0:01:54.720
with burnout and how you can um
0:01:51.600,0:01:56.880
in a way cure it although
0:01:54.720,0:01:58.320
you know and then we’re going to look
0:01:56.880,0:02:00.159
and then we’re going to go to our
0:01:58.320,0:02:02.960
closing remarks and shout outs
0:02:00.159,0:02:04.000
okay sounds like a good show you ready i
0:02:02.960,0:02:09.840
am ready
0:02:04.000,0:02:09.840
all righty let’s do it
0:02:10.720,0:02:13.760
so first up we have the definition of
0:02:12.800,0:02:17.280
burnout
0:02:13.760,0:02:20.800
and this and everything that i looked up
0:02:17.280,0:02:24.160
came from a website called www
0:02:20.800,0:02:26.800
dot guide and
0:02:24.160,0:02:27.599
all of what we found of what i found is
0:02:26.800,0:02:30.319
on this site
0:02:27.599,0:02:31.040
so burnout is a state of emotional
0:02:30.319,0:02:33.200
physical
0:02:31.040,0:02:35.760
and mental exhaustion caused by
0:02:33.200,0:02:37.599
excessive and prolonged stress
0:02:35.760,0:02:40.000
it occurs when you feel overwhelmed
0:02:37.599,0:02:43.040
emotionally drained and unable to
0:02:40.000,0:02:44.879
meet constant demands as the stress
0:02:43.040,0:02:46.959
continues you begin to lose
0:02:44.879,0:02:48.160
interest and motivation that lead to you
0:02:46.959,0:02:50.400
to take on
0:02:48.160,0:02:52.000
the certain role a certain role in the
0:02:50.400,0:02:55.840
first place
0:02:52.000,0:02:58.959
so basically burnout is
0:02:55.840,0:03:00.959
when you have
0:02:58.959,0:03:02.400
when you’re exhausted you’re losing
0:03:00.959,0:03:05.120
motivation
0:03:02.400,0:03:06.959
and you’re basically tired and don’t
0:03:05.120,0:03:08.480
feel like doing anything
0:03:06.959,0:03:10.239
yeah and i think we’ve all kind of
0:03:08.480,0:03:11.360
experienced burnout at some point in
0:03:10.239,0:03:14.400
time whether it’s
0:03:11.360,0:03:14.959
you know excessive school work in fact i
0:03:14.400,0:03:17.440
think
0:03:14.959,0:03:18.000
thinking from a school standpoint by the
0:03:17.440,0:03:19.760
end of the year
0:03:18.000,0:03:21.360
i think a lot of kids have burned out at
0:03:19.760,0:03:23.519
that point in time and really look
0:03:21.360,0:03:25.120
forward to that long vacation
0:03:23.519,0:03:27.360
but even professionally you know the
0:03:25.120,0:03:28.720
same type of thing happens where
0:03:27.360,0:03:30.319
you always have something to look
0:03:28.720,0:03:32.799
forward to you have some vacation
0:03:30.319,0:03:35.840
sometime off or a holiday
0:03:32.799,0:03:38.319
and you sort of gauge your burnout
0:03:35.840,0:03:40.000
to the occurrence of that so i think
0:03:38.319,0:03:42.159
we’ve all experienced it
0:03:40.000,0:03:44.959
yeah i definitely think that many people
0:03:42.159,0:03:47.280
have experienced it if not everyone has
0:03:44.959,0:03:48.239
well has and will experience it at some
0:03:47.280,0:03:50.959
point
0:03:48.239,0:03:53.599
the negative effects of burnout spill
0:03:50.959,0:03:55.760
over into every area of life
0:03:53.599,0:03:57.599
whether it be your home work and social
0:03:55.760,0:04:00.480
life burnout can also cause
0:03:57.599,0:04:01.439
long-term changes into your body so
0:04:00.480,0:04:03.920
burnout can
0:04:01.439,0:04:04.799
can affect every part of you mentally
0:04:03.920,0:04:08.239
emotionally
0:04:04.799,0:04:09.760
physically and your entire lifestyle can
0:04:08.239,0:04:12.239
change because of burnout
0:04:09.760,0:04:13.840
absolutely and as a result of that it
0:04:12.239,0:04:16.560
can cause it to
0:04:13.840,0:04:18.320
affect other people as well because as
0:04:16.560,0:04:20.720
you start to burn out
0:04:18.320,0:04:21.440
you start to react very differently to
0:04:20.720,0:04:23.919
other people
0:04:21.440,0:04:24.560
too so you have to be careful of that
0:04:23.919,0:04:27.440
yeah
0:04:24.560,0:04:28.000
i definitely think that burnout has many
0:04:27.440,0:04:32.400
negative
0:04:28.000,0:04:35.600
effects and i and if you do have burnout
0:04:32.400,0:04:38.800
you kind of need to know what’s
0:04:35.600,0:04:40.000
been going on like burnout can affect
0:04:38.800,0:04:43.199
everyone around you
0:04:40.000,0:04:46.720
and yourself included absolutely
0:04:43.199,0:04:48.880
so so next
0:04:46.720,0:04:49.759
we are going when we come back after a
0:04:48.880,0:04:51.360
quick break
0:04:49.759,0:04:52.880
we are going to look at the signs and
0:04:51.360,0:04:56.790

0:06:06.400,0:06:10.240
today we are going to look right now
0:06:08.960,0:06:13.120
now we’re going to look at the signs and
0:06:10.240,0:06:13.919
symptoms of burnout burnout is a gradual
0:06:13.120,0:06:16.080
process
0:06:13.919,0:06:17.520
it does not happen overnight but it can
0:06:16.080,0:06:19.280
creep up on you
0:06:17.520,0:06:21.039
you should look out for these symptoms
0:06:19.280,0:06:24.639
if you might have burnout
0:06:21.039,0:06:26.319
you could be now i know um sometimes
0:06:24.639,0:06:28.720
with some segments when we have
0:06:26.319,0:06:29.600
like the causes of something you
0:06:28.720,0:06:32.240
normally ask
0:06:29.600,0:06:33.440
me if i’ve experienced these so i’m
0:06:32.240,0:06:35.600
gonna flip the table
0:06:33.440,0:06:39.039
and i’m going to give you the symptoms
0:06:35.600,0:06:42.160
and ask if you’ve had any of them
0:06:39.039,0:06:44.639
so um
0:06:42.160,0:06:49.840
so you could be close to burnout if
0:06:44.639,0:06:49.840
every day is a bad day
0:06:49.919,0:06:54.080
caring about your work or home life
0:06:51.919,0:06:55.919
seems like a total waste of energy
0:06:54.080,0:06:58.240
you’re exhausted all the time the
0:06:55.919,0:06:59.759
majority of your day is spent on tasks
0:06:58.240,0:07:02.319
you find either mind numbing
0:06:59.759,0:07:03.440
dull or overwhelming you feel like
0:07:02.319,0:07:05.680
nothing you do
0:07:03.440,0:07:06.960
makes a difference or is appreciated and
0:07:05.680,0:07:09.199
most days feel
0:07:06.960,0:07:10.800
help and most days you might feel
0:07:09.199,0:07:13.840
helpless and overwhelmed
0:07:10.800,0:07:16.400
so have you gone with any of those um
0:07:13.840,0:07:17.840
symptoms daddy i think it’s fair to say
0:07:16.400,0:07:18.800
that at some point in time i’ve
0:07:17.840,0:07:22.960
experienced
0:07:18.800,0:07:24.319
all of those i don’t think
0:07:22.960,0:07:26.240
i think i’ve been fortunate enough to
0:07:24.319,0:07:26.720
never experience all of them at the same
0:07:26.240,0:07:29.280
time
0:07:26.720,0:07:31.280
in which case i definitely would would
0:07:29.280,0:07:33.039
be totally burn out
0:07:31.280,0:07:34.720
but generally by the time i get up to a
0:07:33.039,0:07:38.000
weekend or i get up to
0:07:34.720,0:07:39.280
a vacation point i’m suffering from one
0:07:38.000,0:07:41.840
or two of those
0:07:39.280,0:07:43.280
now how about you have you experienced
0:07:41.840,0:07:45.120
any of those symptoms
0:07:43.280,0:07:47.199
i mean especially when i had first
0:07:45.120,0:07:48.720
gotten my mood swings i felt like every
0:07:47.199,0:07:51.199
day was going to be a bad day
0:07:48.720,0:07:53.199
especially mondays that was one i
0:07:51.199,0:07:56.879
immediately related to
0:07:53.199,0:08:00.000
um for the second one i didn’t really
0:07:56.879,0:08:03.120
get that i don’t think um
0:08:00.000,0:08:04.240
i think i was just always wanting to try
0:08:03.120,0:08:06.240
my best
0:08:04.240,0:08:07.440
for trying to care about work and home
0:08:06.240,0:08:10.800
life
0:08:07.440,0:08:13.280
um i wasn’t exhausted
0:08:10.800,0:08:14.240
all the time but i did occasionally get
0:08:13.280,0:08:17.440
tired
0:08:14.240,0:08:18.639
at especially in mid um at the start of
0:08:17.440,0:08:22.240
middle school i would get
0:08:18.639,0:08:24.479
kind of tired um
0:08:22.240,0:08:25.360
but yeah i’ve definitely um experienced
0:08:24.479,0:08:28.160
some of these
0:08:25.360,0:08:29.919
but not all of them that’s good i think
0:08:28.160,0:08:31.759
i think anyone who’s experiencing
0:08:29.919,0:08:33.360
all of these has probably got some
0:08:31.759,0:08:35.440
serious issues that they need to take
0:08:33.360,0:08:37.200
care of
0:08:35.440,0:08:38.560
other than just burnout because a lot of
0:08:37.200,0:08:40.240
these things
0:08:38.560,0:08:42.959
could be signs of depression they could
0:08:40.240,0:08:44.720
be signs of physical illness
0:08:42.959,0:08:47.120
there could be a combination of a number
0:08:44.720,0:08:49.040
of things to get you to this point too
0:08:47.120,0:08:51.120
that ultimately do lead you to burnout
0:08:49.040,0:08:52.080
because you know i’ve had situations
0:08:51.120,0:08:55.279
where i’ve had
0:08:52.080,0:08:56.640
prolonged illnesses or injuries
0:08:55.279,0:08:58.240
and they prevent you from doing the
0:08:56.640,0:08:59.600
things that you want to do and over time
0:08:58.240,0:09:01.760
that sort of wears you down
0:08:59.600,0:09:03.839
it wears you down you know where’s your
0:09:01.760,0:09:04.720
spirit down that wears your motivation
0:09:03.839,0:09:07.120
down
0:09:04.720,0:09:08.000
and when that starts to happen all of
0:09:07.120,0:09:11.760
that stuff can
0:09:08.000,0:09:12.720
contribute to burnout so the website
0:09:11.760,0:09:15.120
listed
0:09:12.720,0:09:16.080
three different types of three different
0:09:15.120,0:09:18.240
groups of
0:09:16.080,0:09:19.360
symptoms you can feel if you do have
0:09:18.240,0:09:23.360
burnout
0:09:19.360,0:09:25.200
so first they listed physical symptoms
0:09:23.360,0:09:27.200
and these include feeling tired and
0:09:25.200,0:09:29.440
drained most of the time
0:09:27.200,0:09:32.080
frequent headaches and muscle pain
0:09:29.440,0:09:33.920
lowered immunity frequent illness
0:09:32.080,0:09:36.480
and a change in appetite and sleep
0:09:33.920,0:09:38.160
habits now have you ever experienced any
0:09:36.480,0:09:40.720
of these daddy
0:09:38.160,0:09:41.760
well certainly feeling tired and drained
0:09:40.720,0:09:43.839
most of the time
0:09:41.760,0:09:46.640
i’ve experienced that and again that
0:09:43.839,0:09:48.720
usually goes hand in hand with
0:09:46.640,0:09:50.880
an illness or something you know i had
0:09:48.720,0:09:53.120
bronchitis at one point in time
0:09:50.880,0:09:55.680
and it took me like three months to
0:09:53.120,0:09:57.839
finally shake it to get over it
0:09:55.680,0:09:59.760
and you know you are you still have to
0:09:57.839,0:10:00.160
get up and go to work and do your job
0:09:59.760,0:10:02.000
and
0:10:00.160,0:10:03.600
take care of the stuff around the house
0:10:02.000,0:10:05.600
and all that stuff
0:10:03.600,0:10:07.200
and when you have factors like that
0:10:05.600,0:10:09.440
weighing you down you burn out much
0:10:07.200,0:10:11.920
faster that way
0:10:09.440,0:10:12.959
headaches and muscle pain you know i’m
0:10:11.920,0:10:15.920
old it sort of
0:10:12.959,0:10:17.920
comes with the territory i think but the
0:10:15.920,0:10:19.600
lowered immunity because i’m diabetic
0:10:17.920,0:10:23.200
that weighs on the immunity
0:10:19.600,0:10:24.399
system as well so i’ve improved things
0:10:23.200,0:10:27.680
by taking
0:10:24.399,0:10:30.560
a pretty robust
0:10:27.680,0:10:33.519
vitamin regimen now so fortunately i
0:10:30.560,0:10:35.440
don’t get sick as often as i did
0:10:33.519,0:10:37.519
but changing appetite and sleep habits
0:10:35.440,0:10:39.760
you’ve you’ve seen times where
0:10:37.519,0:10:41.920
i don’t sleep for three days at a time
0:10:39.760,0:10:44.880
you know during the week
0:10:41.920,0:10:46.079
and and you know i can deal with one or
0:10:44.880,0:10:49.040
two days of of
0:10:46.079,0:10:50.640
poor sleep but it catches up you know
0:10:49.040,0:10:51.839
it’s one of those things where if it
0:10:50.640,0:10:54.560
happens too often
0:10:51.839,0:10:56.000
by the end of the week you know i’m
0:10:54.560,0:10:59.200
ready to just
0:10:56.000,0:11:00.720
sleep all day long so yeah
0:10:59.200,0:11:02.240
you get some of those physical symptoms
0:11:00.720,0:11:04.640
how about you i know you’ve had some
0:11:02.240,0:11:06.320
issues with sleep in the past and
0:11:04.640,0:11:07.760
you know you’ve had some issues feeling
0:11:06.320,0:11:09.120
tired and drained so have you
0:11:07.760,0:11:09.839
experienced any of these physical
0:11:09.120,0:11:11.760
symptoms
0:11:09.839,0:11:13.680
well i mean feeling tired and drained
0:11:11.760,0:11:14.000
that was kind of a thing that i’m pretty
0:11:13.680,0:11:16.079
sure
0:11:14.000,0:11:17.360
many people my age at school would feel
0:11:16.079,0:11:18.959
like
0:11:17.360,0:11:20.480
mainly because of the sleep habits
0:11:18.959,0:11:21.120
because we wouldn’t really get enough
0:11:20.480,0:11:24.320
sleep
0:11:21.120,0:11:26.320
and i mean i’ve gotten better but
0:11:24.320,0:11:28.320
before it was kind of hard for me to
0:11:26.320,0:11:29.680
fall asleep and i’ve also noticed the
0:11:28.320,0:11:31.279
change in appetite
0:11:29.680,0:11:34.160
i have actually been changing my
0:11:31.279,0:11:35.920
appetite a lot like sometimes i can eat
0:11:34.160,0:11:37.279
my entire plate and sometimes i can
0:11:35.920,0:11:40.000
barely finish half of it
0:11:37.279,0:11:41.839
so i’ve definitely experienced some of
0:11:40.000,0:11:44.399
these
0:11:41.839,0:11:45.440
next group we have is emotional symptoms
0:11:44.399,0:11:46.800
and
0:11:45.440,0:11:49.519
these have a lot more than just the
0:11:46.800,0:11:51.760
physical symptoms so
0:11:49.519,0:11:53.920
emotional symptoms can include a sense
0:11:51.760,0:11:56.320
of failure and self-doubt
0:11:53.920,0:11:58.079
loss of motivation feeling helpless
0:11:56.320,0:12:00.639
trapped and defeated
0:11:58.079,0:12:02.200
increasingly cynical and negative
0:12:00.639,0:12:05.200
outlook
0:12:02.200,0:12:07.519
detachment or feeling alone in the world
0:12:05.200,0:12:08.480
decreased satisfaction and sense of
0:12:07.519,0:12:10.720
accomplishment
0:12:08.480,0:12:11.519
so have you ever felt any of these
0:12:10.720,0:12:15.680
emotional
0:12:11.519,0:12:16.800
factors um yeah i’ve i’ve experienced a
0:12:15.680,0:12:19.839
good deal of them
0:12:16.800,0:12:22.240
um i don’t think i’ve ever actually
0:12:19.839,0:12:25.680
attributed them to burnout though
0:12:22.240,0:12:27.120
which is kind of interesting um usually
0:12:25.680,0:12:29.920
you know i’ve gone through periods of
0:12:27.120,0:12:32.480
depression loss of a loved one
0:12:29.920,0:12:33.839
loss of a job you know stuff like that
0:12:32.480,0:12:35.680
where there have been trigger points in
0:12:33.839,0:12:37.040
my life that have caused some of these
0:12:35.680,0:12:40.000
symptoms
0:12:37.040,0:12:41.440
but at the time and i i had never
0:12:40.000,0:12:44.079
thought to even attribute them to
0:12:41.440,0:12:46.240
burnout and it’s entirely possible that
0:12:44.079,0:12:47.920
burnout may have led to some of these
0:12:46.240,0:12:49.920
symptoms you know the
0:12:47.920,0:12:51.680
sense of failure and self-doubt comes
0:12:49.920,0:12:52.320
when you when you’re out of work you
0:12:51.680,0:12:53.920
know you’re
0:12:52.320,0:12:55.360
you don’t feel as though you’re serving
0:12:53.920,0:12:58.560
a purpose
0:12:55.360,0:13:01.200
loss of motivation well that happens on
0:12:58.560,0:13:04.720
a fairly regular basis just from
0:13:01.200,0:13:06.560
day-to-day activities feeling helpless
0:13:04.720,0:13:08.079
trapped or defeated
0:13:06.560,0:13:09.600
again that’s one of those things where
0:13:08.079,0:13:13.279
if you have a big project and
0:13:09.600,0:13:17.920
and you feel overwhelmed you you tend to
0:13:13.279,0:13:19.519
self-doubt tends to creep in um
0:13:17.920,0:13:21.120
increasingly cynical and negative
0:13:19.519,0:13:23.120
outlook with the way the world is today
0:13:21.120,0:13:26.240
i don’t know how do you how you not have
0:13:23.120,0:13:27.680
a somewhat cynical outlook on life you
0:13:26.240,0:13:30.320
know it seems the
0:13:27.680,0:13:32.079
the further we get into the pandemic
0:13:30.320,0:13:34.240
here the more cynical and negative
0:13:32.079,0:13:37.279
things seem to be
0:13:34.240,0:13:38.800
the detached feelings and feeling alone
0:13:37.279,0:13:40.720
that’s more of a depression i always
0:13:38.800,0:13:41.680
equate that to more of a depression type
0:13:40.720,0:13:44.000
thing
0:13:41.680,0:13:45.440
and the decreased satisfaction and self
0:13:44.000,0:13:46.880
accomplishment
0:13:45.440,0:13:49.199
that’s one of those things where if you
0:13:46.880,0:13:51.279
don’t have goals set for yourself
0:13:49.199,0:13:53.600
it’s very difficult to generate those
0:13:51.279,0:13:54.160
types of positive feelings so sometimes
0:13:53.600,0:13:57.680
it’s that
0:13:54.160,0:14:00.160
lack of goals that can do that
0:13:57.680,0:14:01.279
but again all these can be signs of
0:14:00.160,0:14:03.440
burner how about you
0:14:01.279,0:14:04.639
what of these have you experienced i
0:14:03.440,0:14:06.399
mean failure
0:14:04.639,0:14:08.000
definitely whenever i never came home
0:14:06.399,0:14:10.240
with a perfect day
0:14:08.000,0:14:11.920
i definitely feel a sense of failure
0:14:10.240,0:14:14.000
loss of motivation i’ve been feeling
0:14:11.920,0:14:17.279
that a lot in quarantine
0:14:14.000,0:14:19.440
because well i really don’t
0:14:17.279,0:14:20.399
have much motivation at this point i’ve
0:14:19.440,0:14:24.000
gotten much
0:14:20.399,0:14:25.920
lazier and it’s kind of hard to stay
0:14:24.000,0:14:28.079
motivated at this time and mommy’s
0:14:25.920,0:14:30.959
definitely tried to get me out and i
0:14:28.079,0:14:32.480
definitely appreciate her for that uh
0:14:30.959,0:14:34.160
helpless trapped and defeated i
0:14:32.480,0:14:34.800
definitely felt that when i was in sixth
0:14:34.160,0:14:36.800
grade
0:14:34.800,0:14:38.320
um once again sixth grade was one of the
0:14:36.800,0:14:41.040
worst times of my life
0:14:38.320,0:14:41.839
that was really when things spiraled
0:14:41.040,0:14:45.839
down
0:14:41.839,0:14:48.320
um i did feel very sad when
0:14:45.839,0:14:50.160
um i felt as though my emotional
0:14:48.320,0:14:52.240
outbreaks would never stop
0:14:50.160,0:14:53.760
that was when puberty immediately hit
0:14:52.240,0:14:55.199
and it was not one of the best years of
0:14:53.760,0:14:57.920
my life so
0:14:55.199,0:14:58.560
um negative outlook i definitely had
0:14:57.920,0:15:01.440
that
0:14:58.560,0:15:02.079
in sixth grade i’m definitely trying to
0:15:01.440,0:15:03.839
get a
0:15:02.079,0:15:05.920
better and more positive outlook but
0:15:03.839,0:15:07.519
like you said with the pandemic going on
0:15:05.920,0:15:08.639
it’s been harder to have that positive
0:15:07.519,0:15:10.560
outlook
0:15:08.639,0:15:12.320
uh feeling alone in the world i never
0:15:10.560,0:15:14.240
really felt that because i had really
0:15:12.320,0:15:15.360
close friends and you and mommy and i
0:15:14.240,0:15:18.880
really felt as though
0:15:15.360,0:15:21.360
i wasn’t alone uh um
0:15:18.880,0:15:22.160
feeling decreased satisfaction and sense
0:15:21.360,0:15:24.240
of a
0:15:22.160,0:15:25.680
sense of accomplishment i never really
0:15:24.240,0:15:29.279
felt that i always
0:15:25.680,0:15:30.320
like had um felt really happy with my
0:15:29.279,0:15:32.240
accomplishments
0:15:30.320,0:15:33.759
i think the only time i’ve seen you feel
0:15:32.240,0:15:37.120
that is the one time
0:15:33.759,0:15:38.959
you came home with a b in your math
0:15:37.120,0:15:40.800
your advanced math class you were very
0:15:38.959,0:15:44.560
dissatisfied
0:15:40.800,0:15:46.480
and disappointed in yourself um and that
0:15:44.560,0:15:49.600
again that’s because of how hard you are
0:15:46.480,0:15:51.519
but being that hard on yourself can very
0:15:49.600,0:15:54.880
easily lead to burnout and a lot of
0:15:51.519,0:15:57.120
these symptoms
0:15:54.880,0:15:58.160
the final group we have is behavioral
0:15:57.120,0:16:00.079
symptoms
0:15:58.160,0:16:01.279
these can include withdrawing from
0:16:00.079,0:16:03.680
responsibility
0:16:01.279,0:16:05.519
using food drugs and alcohol to cope
0:16:03.680,0:16:07.519
isolating yourself from others
0:16:05.519,0:16:09.519
taking out your frustration on others
0:16:07.519,0:16:10.399
procrastinating and taking longer to get
0:16:09.519,0:16:13.279
things done
0:16:10.399,0:16:15.279
or skipping work or coming home late and
0:16:13.279,0:16:16.959
leaving early
0:16:15.279,0:16:19.839
so have you ever experienced any of
0:16:16.959,0:16:22.399
these uh some of them i have
0:16:19.839,0:16:24.720
um withdrawing from responsibility i
0:16:22.399,0:16:27.279
don’t think i’ve had the luxury of that
0:16:24.720,0:16:28.720
um being holding the position i do at
0:16:27.279,0:16:31.279
work and being
0:16:28.720,0:16:32.959
having to be a responsible adult for the
0:16:31.279,0:16:35.839
most part at home
0:16:32.959,0:16:37.920
um you know you can’t get away from your
0:16:35.839,0:16:41.040
responsibilities right
0:16:37.920,0:16:43.519
um using food i mean all you got to do
0:16:41.040,0:16:47.440
is take a look at me you know food is
0:16:43.519,0:16:49.199
typically you know my coping mechanism
0:16:47.440,0:16:51.120
so if i’m burning out or if i’m
0:16:49.199,0:16:53.040
depressed or if something’s bothering me
0:16:51.120,0:16:54.320
that’s usually where i get my comfort
0:16:53.040,0:16:57.600
from and that’s that’s
0:16:54.320,0:16:59.440
probably the biggest crutch that i have
0:16:57.600,0:17:01.680
isolating myself from others well i do
0:16:59.440,0:17:03.440
that on a regular basis so
0:17:01.680,0:17:06.559
that’s really not something that i can
0:17:03.440,0:17:08.880
say is a sign of burnout for me
0:17:06.559,0:17:11.039
i honestly though if i’m burnout i tend
0:17:08.880,0:17:13.039
to congregate around others that’s
0:17:11.039,0:17:15.839
that’s usually when i pull
0:17:13.039,0:17:16.720
people closer to me so i can try and
0:17:15.839,0:17:18.720
feed off of
0:17:16.720,0:17:20.319
you know their energy and enthusiasm and
0:17:18.720,0:17:23.360
stuff like that so
0:17:20.319,0:17:25.280
if you see me showing up for movie
0:17:23.360,0:17:27.280
nights or wanting to do game nights with
0:17:25.280,0:17:29.440
the family and stuff like that when i’m
0:17:27.280,0:17:30.799
or if i want to go out somewhere that’s
0:17:29.440,0:17:31.200
usually because i’m burned out and i
0:17:30.799,0:17:33.840
need a
0:17:31.200,0:17:36.720
i need a break i need to step away and
0:17:33.840,0:17:38.880
have a distraction from what i’m doing
0:17:36.720,0:17:40.320
um taking out my frustrations on others
0:17:38.880,0:17:42.240
i usually don’t do that although
0:17:40.320,0:17:44.320
some of the equipment around here would
0:17:42.240,0:17:45.919
would beg to differ
0:17:44.320,0:17:48.640
if i take out my frustrations it’s
0:17:45.919,0:17:50.400
usually on inanimate objects
0:17:48.640,0:17:52.240
procrastinate well i do that all the
0:17:50.400,0:17:53.679
time anyway so that’s just a character
0:17:52.240,0:17:56.559
trait of mine
0:17:53.679,0:17:57.039
and skipping work or coming in late uh i
0:17:56.559,0:18:00.320
very
0:17:57.039,0:18:02.000
again i very rarely do that because
0:18:00.320,0:18:04.400
there’s too much responsibility at work
0:18:02.000,0:18:05.679
i don’t i don’t have the luxury of just
0:18:04.400,0:18:09.280
leaving earlier or
0:18:05.679,0:18:11.280
coming in whenever i want so i can’t use
0:18:09.280,0:18:13.280
that as a coping mechanism
0:18:11.280,0:18:15.840
but again i throw it back at you of
0:18:13.280,0:18:17.919
these what have you experienced
0:18:15.840,0:18:19.039
well probably not anything with
0:18:17.919,0:18:21.760
strolling
0:18:19.039,0:18:23.679
from responsibility or skipping school
0:18:21.760,0:18:27.120
or anything like that
0:18:23.679,0:18:27.120
um using food
0:18:27.360,0:18:32.400
i mean my main source is chocolate like
0:18:30.880,0:18:34.160
you guys would have spared chocolate
0:18:32.400,0:18:36.240
around the house and whenever i had a
0:18:34.160,0:18:38.720
bad day you just give me chocolate
0:18:36.240,0:18:39.840
and it would make me feel better uh
0:18:38.720,0:18:42.080
isolating myself
0:18:39.840,0:18:43.520
i normally do that when i’m really
0:18:42.080,0:18:45.360
frustrated because i don’t want to
0:18:43.520,0:18:47.679
scream at people
0:18:45.360,0:18:50.080
so i normally isolate myself when i do
0:18:47.679,0:18:52.000
feel sad but normally you come in
0:18:50.080,0:18:54.720
like with your happy energy and try to
0:18:52.000,0:18:57.200
cheer me up and i appreciate that
0:18:54.720,0:18:58.400
on taking frustration out on others same
0:18:57.200,0:19:01.200
thing with you
0:18:58.400,0:19:03.320
not with people inanimate objects i
0:19:01.200,0:19:07.120
scream at inanimate objects
0:19:03.320,0:19:09.440
procrastinating um i mean sometimes
0:19:07.120,0:19:12.160
like i remember sometimes doing the
0:19:09.440,0:19:14.400
notes i would sort of procrastinate
0:19:12.160,0:19:15.679
i’d like have somewhat of a short
0:19:14.400,0:19:17.919
attention span
0:19:15.679,0:19:19.679
and that’s kind of common for most kids
0:19:17.919,0:19:21.280
so procrastinating is definitely
0:19:19.679,0:19:22.880
something that i sometimes do
0:19:21.280,0:19:25.200
but not on school work i don’t normally
0:19:22.880,0:19:28.400
do that in school work
0:19:25.200,0:19:30.559
so yeah okay uh now we’re
0:19:28.400,0:19:33.360
gonna quickly talk about the difference
0:19:30.559,0:19:36.400
between stress and burnout
0:19:33.360,0:19:38.640
um stress it involves
0:19:36.400,0:19:39.440
too much of everything too many
0:19:38.640,0:19:42.480
pressures
0:19:39.440,0:19:43.360
too much of you of you physically and
0:19:42.480,0:19:45.360
mentally
0:19:43.360,0:19:47.200
burnout on the other hand is about not
0:19:45.360,0:19:49.160
enough being burned out
0:19:47.200,0:19:50.400
means feeling empty and mentally
0:19:49.160,0:19:53.280
exhausted
0:19:50.400,0:19:54.960
and demote of motivation while people
0:19:53.280,0:19:57.360
who are stressed see some hope in
0:19:54.960,0:19:59.600
recovering to change their situation
0:19:57.360,0:20:02.159
people who are burned out see no hope of
0:19:59.600,0:20:03.919
a positive change to their situation
0:20:02.159,0:20:06.000
while you may be aware that you are
0:20:03.919,0:20:07.919
stressed most people don’t notice when
0:20:06.000,0:20:09.840
burnout happens kind of similar to what
0:20:07.919,0:20:12.000
you said like you saw some of the
0:20:09.840,0:20:13.360
symptoms like the emotional symptoms and
0:20:12.000,0:20:13.919
you had no idea that they could have
0:20:13.360,0:20:15.919
been caused
0:20:13.919,0:20:17.360
to burn out exactly yeah and we’ve
0:20:15.919,0:20:19.760
talked about stress we’ve done a whole
0:20:17.360,0:20:22.400
podcast on stress in the past
0:20:19.760,0:20:24.159
so we know how to identify stress and
0:20:22.400,0:20:26.240
recognize stress
0:20:24.159,0:20:27.440
and i think the important takeaway here
0:20:26.240,0:20:29.679
is that
0:20:27.440,0:20:31.679
like you said in the beginning burnout
0:20:29.679,0:20:34.400
is a gradual process
0:20:31.679,0:20:36.400
and that gradual process is influenced
0:20:34.400,0:20:39.280
by the different stressors that you
0:20:36.400,0:20:40.400
encounter in life so the more stress you
0:20:39.280,0:20:42.400
have
0:20:40.400,0:20:44.080
the quicker you’ll burn out everyone
0:20:42.400,0:20:46.799
burns out eventually
0:20:44.080,0:20:47.200
you can’t keep going it at a breakneck
0:20:46.799,0:20:50.880
pace
0:20:47.200,0:20:54.640
constantly without burning out and
0:20:50.880,0:20:57.600
what determines that obviously is your
0:20:54.640,0:20:59.039
ability to cope with stress and how much
0:20:57.600,0:21:01.280
dress you’re under
0:20:59.039,0:21:03.840
but stress itself even though some of
0:21:01.280,0:21:06.159
the symptoms may appear to be burnout
0:21:03.840,0:21:07.600
stress itself is not burnout but it can
0:21:06.159,0:21:09.200
lead to burnout i think that’s the
0:21:07.600,0:21:12.240
important takeaway here
0:21:09.200,0:21:14.840
yeah um that’s probably why the
0:21:12.240,0:21:17.120
article included it because people can
0:21:14.840,0:21:20.080
probably um
0:21:17.120,0:21:20.880
mislead burn out as stress and stress as
0:21:20.080,0:21:23.760
burnout
0:21:20.880,0:21:25.600
absolutely so we’re gonna take a quick
0:21:23.760,0:21:28.840
break and when we come back we’ll look
0:21:25.600,0:21:31.840
at the causes of burnout
0:21:28.840,0:21:31.840

0:22:38.159,0:22:41.679
so there are many different causes of
0:22:39.760,0:22:43.440
burnout whether it be from your job
0:22:41.679,0:22:46.000
school or even at home
0:22:43.440,0:22:47.600
and once again the website put these in
0:22:46.000,0:22:51.120
the different categories
0:22:47.600,0:22:54.320
for work related causes lifestyle causes
0:22:51.120,0:22:56.880
and even personal traits
0:22:54.320,0:22:58.640
so let’s look at work related slash
0:22:56.880,0:23:03.280
probably school related
0:22:58.640,0:23:06.159
so tell me if you felt any of these so
0:23:03.280,0:23:06.799
um workout related work related causes
0:23:06.159,0:23:08.320
can be
0:23:06.799,0:23:09.840
feeling like you have little to no
0:23:08.320,0:23:12.559
control of your work
0:23:09.840,0:23:13.280
lack of recognization or reward for good
0:23:12.559,0:23:15.280
work
0:23:13.280,0:23:16.559
unclear or overly demanding job
0:23:15.280,0:23:19.919
expectations
0:23:16.559,0:23:19.919
doing work that is
0:23:20.320,0:23:26.159
monotonous monotonous or unchallenging
0:23:23.440,0:23:27.679
or working in a chaotic or
0:23:26.159,0:23:30.080
pressure-filled environment
0:23:27.679,0:23:30.880
high pressure phil hybrids are filled
0:23:30.080,0:23:32.880
and
0:23:30.880,0:23:35.039
you know it’s funny pretty much all of
0:23:32.880,0:23:38.159
those kind of define what my
0:23:35.039,0:23:39.200
work is with the exception of monotonous
0:23:38.159,0:23:41.200
and unchallenging
0:23:39.200,0:23:42.240
the work that i do is always challenging
0:23:41.200,0:23:44.159
and it’s not
0:23:42.240,0:23:46.400
monotonous but when they say monotonous
0:23:44.159,0:23:48.559
it’s like the boring work the
0:23:46.400,0:23:49.740
the simple tedious stuff you do over and
0:23:48.559,0:23:51.039
over
0:23:49.740,0:23:54.080
[Music]
0:23:51.039,0:23:57.279
but you know i don’t own the company
0:23:54.080,0:23:58.080
so i don’t make the final decisions on
0:23:57.279,0:24:00.320
things
0:23:58.080,0:24:02.240
although i’m in a position that i have
0:24:00.320,0:24:05.120
to make decisions
0:24:02.240,0:24:06.960
sometimes i can’t make those decisions
0:24:05.120,0:24:08.880
but that’s just a factor of
0:24:06.960,0:24:11.760
middle management in the way that work
0:24:08.880,0:24:15.120
you know industry tends to work
0:24:11.760,0:24:17.120
um lack of recognition or reward
0:24:15.120,0:24:18.400
that’s not so much usually at work
0:24:17.120,0:24:20.000
they’re very keen
0:24:18.400,0:24:22.880
you know the owners of the company are
0:24:20.000,0:24:25.600
very keen on recognizing
0:24:22.880,0:24:26.640
the efforts that their employees put in
0:24:25.600,0:24:29.919
so there’s never been an
0:24:26.640,0:24:33.919
issue with that they’re very generous
0:24:29.919,0:24:36.240
very understanding i kind of have a
0:24:33.919,0:24:37.919
unique relationship
0:24:36.240,0:24:40.320
with the owner of the company the one
0:24:37.919,0:24:44.000
owner of the company and and we kind of
0:24:40.320,0:24:45.760
have a love-hate relationship
0:24:44.000,0:24:48.400
but we i think we both respect each
0:24:45.760,0:24:50.440
other we understand what each other does
0:24:48.400,0:24:51.919
um and and a lot of it is just
0:24:50.440,0:24:55.840
stereotypical
0:24:51.919,0:24:58.080
you know your i.t so you know you’re
0:24:55.840,0:24:59.279
you’re a drain on the company and i i
0:24:58.080,0:25:01.360
tolerate you and
0:24:59.279,0:25:03.200
you know that’s sort of how he portrays
0:25:01.360,0:25:05.440
himself but
0:25:03.200,0:25:06.880
i’m very fortunate to work at a company
0:25:05.440,0:25:09.200
where
0:25:06.880,0:25:11.039
the owners recognize your value and
0:25:09.200,0:25:13.600
they’re willing to invest
0:25:11.039,0:25:15.919
in the projects and the things that that
0:25:13.600,0:25:17.360
we need to take care of where
0:25:15.919,0:25:20.799
other companies i’ve worked at before
0:25:17.360,0:25:23.120
don’t they don’t have the foresight to
0:25:20.799,0:25:24.880
or haven’t had the foresight to invest
0:25:23.120,0:25:27.679
in that and see that
0:25:24.880,0:25:30.799
the work that i do even though i don’t
0:25:27.679,0:25:32.960
directly make money for the company
0:25:30.799,0:25:35.520
the company is dependent on the
0:25:32.960,0:25:37.039
infrastructure that i support
0:25:35.520,0:25:38.960
and a lot of companies a lot of company
0:25:37.039,0:25:42.000
owners don’t recognize that and i’m very
0:25:38.960,0:25:43.760
fortunate where i’m at where they do
0:25:42.000,0:25:45.200
there’s always overly demanding
0:25:43.760,0:25:46.559
expectations
0:25:45.200,0:25:47.760
especially when it comes to the type of
0:25:46.559,0:25:49.600
work i do because not everyone
0:25:47.760,0:25:51.039
understands what i do
0:25:49.600,0:25:53.120
we get a lot of people that come in and
0:25:51.039,0:25:55.279
say you know they want to tell me how to
0:25:53.120,0:25:57.840
do things and
0:25:55.279,0:25:59.760
sometimes you have to stop them and
0:25:57.840,0:26:02.400
explain that it’s not as simple as just
0:25:59.760,0:26:06.159
flipping a switch it doesn’t just work
0:26:02.400,0:26:06.159
there’s a lot of magic that goes on
0:26:06.240,0:26:11.279
um working in a chaotic and high
0:26:10.159,0:26:14.159
pressure environment
0:26:11.279,0:26:15.200
that’s kind of what i like you know it’s
0:26:14.159,0:26:16.640
it’s
0:26:15.200,0:26:18.320
something different every day every day
0:26:16.640,0:26:19.840
i walk in there’s a different scenario
0:26:18.320,0:26:23.200
that i’m dealing with
0:26:19.840,0:26:26.559
um and that chaos
0:26:23.200,0:26:28.880
making order from that chaos is what i
0:26:26.559,0:26:31.360
thrive on it’s what i do best
0:26:28.880,0:26:33.919
you know when i come in and the sky is
0:26:31.360,0:26:37.360
falling and the building’s burning down
0:26:33.919,0:26:39.919
you know i’m i and i’m at my best
0:26:37.360,0:26:41.600
under those circumstances where i can
0:26:39.919,0:26:43.919
come in and crisis manage and
0:26:41.600,0:26:46.000
put all the pieces together and
0:26:43.919,0:26:48.480
recognize what resources i have and
0:26:46.000,0:26:50.559
utilize those resources
0:26:48.480,0:26:52.320
and it’s that very reason that it’s not
0:26:50.559,0:26:54.080
a very monotonous or unchallenging
0:26:52.320,0:26:55.760
environment it’s challenging every day
0:26:54.080,0:26:58.799
and that’s what keeps me interested
0:26:55.760,0:27:02.320
yeah like you also get a satisfaction
0:26:58.799,0:27:04.240
from helping the chaos absolutely
0:27:02.320,0:27:06.240
what about you do you experience those
0:27:04.240,0:27:08.880
things when it comes to your school work
0:27:06.240,0:27:09.600
um having little or no control of my
0:27:08.880,0:27:11.039
work
0:27:09.600,0:27:13.600
i definitely feel as though i have
0:27:11.039,0:27:16.640
control of it i have control on one
0:27:13.600,0:27:18.240
of when i do it how i do it um
0:27:16.640,0:27:20.000
and that’s where my creative liberty
0:27:18.240,0:27:21.919
comes in especially in like some of my
0:27:20.000,0:27:22.320
more ela classes where i was able to
0:27:21.919,0:27:25.279
write
0:27:22.320,0:27:27.360
a creative story i was i definitely felt
0:27:25.279,0:27:29.919
in control i was able to use my creative
0:27:27.360,0:27:33.600
liberty and make a really nice story
0:27:29.919,0:27:35.120
so a lack of recognization for or reward
0:27:33.600,0:27:38.000
of good work
0:27:35.120,0:27:38.559
um i actually don’t feel that because my
0:27:38.000,0:27:42.320
school
0:27:38.559,0:27:45.120
um definitely um
0:27:42.320,0:27:46.799
knows the good work i do and for others
0:27:45.120,0:27:49.279
and the good work other students do and
0:27:46.799,0:27:51.679
they definitely reward us so i
0:27:49.279,0:27:52.480
i definitely feel as though i wouldn’t
0:27:51.679,0:27:56.480
have this
0:27:52.480,0:27:58.559
so unclear overly demanding expectations
0:27:56.480,0:27:59.600
i mean that’s kind of the harder middle
0:27:58.559,0:28:01.600
school you get
0:27:59.600,0:28:03.520
as you get older things get harder you
0:28:01.600,0:28:05.760
get more responsibilities and they’re
0:28:03.520,0:28:08.320
going to be higher expectations
0:28:05.760,0:28:09.360
it’s just the way it goes honestly so
0:28:08.320,0:28:11.200
i’m
0:28:09.360,0:28:12.559
honestly it’s no real problem with that
0:28:11.200,0:28:15.279
it’s just
0:28:12.559,0:28:16.000
nature of it it’s just the nature of it
0:28:15.279,0:28:19.039
doing work
0:28:16.000,0:28:19.919
that’s unchallenging i really want to
0:28:19.039,0:28:21.520
say
0:28:19.919,0:28:23.760
like they had a good amount of
0:28:21.520,0:28:26.720
unchallenging and challenging
0:28:23.760,0:28:28.840
work so i never really felt that working
0:28:26.720,0:28:30.080
in a chaotic and high pressured
0:28:28.840,0:28:33.279
environment
0:28:30.080,0:28:34.720
um definitely when we had to go into
0:28:33.279,0:28:36.640
quarantine that’s
0:28:34.720,0:28:38.399
that was definitely a chaotic and high
0:28:36.640,0:28:39.120
pressure environment because we were all
0:28:38.399,0:28:42.000
new to it
0:28:39.120,0:28:43.279
so yeah i guess that’s the only thing i
0:28:42.000,0:28:47.679
actually felt out of it
0:28:43.279,0:28:50.480
okay so next up we have lifestyle causes
0:28:47.679,0:28:51.840
and once again i’m going to ask um if
0:28:50.480,0:28:55.200
you’ve experienced any of these
0:28:51.840,0:28:57.440
so lifestyle causes can include
0:28:55.200,0:29:00.000
working too much without enough time for
0:28:57.440,0:29:01.679
socializing or relaxing
0:29:00.000,0:29:04.039
lack of close and supportive
0:29:01.679,0:29:05.360
relationships taking on too many
0:29:04.039,0:29:08.000
responsibilities
0:29:05.360,0:29:10.720
with without enough help from others and
0:29:08.000,0:29:14.000
not getting enough sleep
0:29:10.720,0:29:18.000
well i can definitely attest to probably
0:29:14.000,0:29:20.240
one um i tend to
0:29:18.000,0:29:22.559
again it’s the nature of the of the work
0:29:20.240,0:29:24.240
i do i tend to
0:29:22.559,0:29:25.919
it requires a lot of time especially if
0:29:24.240,0:29:28.159
there’s a lot of after hours work that i
0:29:25.919,0:29:29.360
do
0:29:28.159,0:29:31.039
as far as not enough time for
0:29:29.360,0:29:31.520
socializing i’m not much of a social
0:29:31.039,0:29:33.200
light
0:29:31.520,0:29:34.960
you know i’m not the type of person who
0:29:33.200,0:29:38.080
who spends a lot of time with others but
0:29:34.960,0:29:39.440
i do like my relaxation time so if i
0:29:38.080,0:29:40.000
don’t get enough of that i get very
0:29:39.440,0:29:43.279
cranky
0:29:40.000,0:29:45.279
very quickly close support of
0:29:43.279,0:29:48.720
relationships that one i can’t say i
0:29:45.279,0:29:50.480
i have a problem with the
0:29:48.720,0:29:53.360
the family relationships that we have
0:29:50.480,0:29:54.799
here are incredibly rewarding
0:29:53.360,0:29:57.440
and that’s what i look forward to you
0:29:54.799,0:29:58.720
know i go to work all week long
0:29:57.440,0:30:01.360
you know there’s not a lot of
0:29:58.720,0:30:02.720
interaction that happens during the week
0:30:01.360,0:30:04.960
but that’s because we all have our own
0:30:02.720,0:30:06.640
things to do and i look forward to the
0:30:04.960,0:30:08.480
weekends because the weekends are where
0:30:06.640,0:30:09.039
i get to recharge we get to hang out we
0:30:08.480,0:30:11.039
get to
0:30:09.039,0:30:13.279
podcast together we get to have our
0:30:11.039,0:30:16.320
talks at meal time
0:30:13.279,0:30:18.320
and that’s really what i live for um
0:30:16.320,0:30:20.080
taking on too many responsibilities with
0:30:18.320,0:30:22.399
not enough help
0:30:20.080,0:30:24.559
that happens you know and that’s sort of
0:30:22.399,0:30:27.120
the nature of things that’s why i try
0:30:24.559,0:30:28.720
and i tell you to whatever it is that
0:30:27.120,0:30:30.240
you’re doing break it up into smaller
0:30:28.720,0:30:32.080
chunks
0:30:30.240,0:30:33.520
so managing those types of things
0:30:32.080,0:30:35.039
project management is
0:30:33.520,0:30:36.559
is really what helped me get through
0:30:35.039,0:30:37.919
those
0:30:36.559,0:30:40.640
and i don’t think i could ever get
0:30:37.919,0:30:42.399
enough sleep um
0:30:40.640,0:30:44.080
my problem is i can only sleep for so
0:30:42.399,0:30:45.760
long before you know
0:30:44.080,0:30:48.399
my back hurts or this hurts or that
0:30:45.760,0:30:51.360
hurts and i have to get up
0:30:48.399,0:30:54.000
but yeah i’m always always looking to
0:30:51.360,0:30:55.840
get more sleep if i can get more sleep
0:30:54.000,0:30:57.600
but again i’ll throw it back at you what
0:30:55.840,0:31:00.320
are your thoughts um
0:30:57.600,0:31:01.360
working too much i never really had that
0:31:00.320,0:31:04.880
problem
0:31:01.360,0:31:06.799
um i mean of course i would push myself
0:31:04.880,0:31:08.880
to always finish my homework before i
0:31:06.799,0:31:10.399
did anything else and sometimes it was a
0:31:08.880,0:31:12.880
bit draining but
0:31:10.399,0:31:15.039
um it wasn’t a constant thing so i
0:31:12.880,0:31:17.200
wouldn’t say working too much
0:31:15.039,0:31:18.720
um i had enough time for relaxing
0:31:17.200,0:31:21.760
especially in the summer
0:31:18.720,0:31:24.799
like i’m relaxing almost 24
0:31:21.760,0:31:25.519
- socializing i mean i do call my
0:31:24.799,0:31:28.000
friends
0:31:25.519,0:31:30.240
and i do talk to you so even though it’s
0:31:28.000,0:31:33.600
harder to have the whole social life
0:31:30.240,0:31:34.640
now but you know we are still able to
0:31:33.600,0:31:36.440
manage
0:31:34.640,0:31:38.000
uh lack of close supportive
0:31:36.440,0:31:39.919
relationships
0:31:38.000,0:31:41.919
um i definitely say i have very
0:31:39.919,0:31:42.880
supportive relationships including my
0:31:41.919,0:31:46.240
friends and
0:31:42.880,0:31:49.840
you guys and like i like we said
0:31:46.240,0:31:51.679
in the in our last podcast
0:31:49.840,0:31:52.880
um good healthy and supportive
0:31:51.679,0:31:55.200
relationships are
0:31:52.880,0:31:56.880
very good for your mental health and
0:31:55.200,0:31:58.559
especially in the friends one that we
0:31:56.880,0:32:01.039
did a little while ago
0:31:58.559,0:32:02.880
that was it was definitely definitely
0:32:01.039,0:32:03.440
having good and healthy relationships
0:32:02.880,0:32:06.960
proves
0:32:03.440,0:32:08.880
very positive effects uh taking on too
0:32:06.960,0:32:09.919
many responsibilities without enough
0:32:08.880,0:32:13.440
help
0:32:09.919,0:32:16.640
i mean i sometimes felt like that
0:32:13.440,0:32:19.279
like especially in the beginning
0:32:16.640,0:32:20.480
with especially with math i had no idea
0:32:19.279,0:32:23.600
what square
0:32:20.480,0:32:26.080
what script square roots were
0:32:23.600,0:32:27.279
i had to actually get mommy’s help for
0:32:26.080,0:32:29.120
that because
0:32:27.279,0:32:30.559
i really had no idea what square roots
0:32:29.120,0:32:34.240
were but once i was eight
0:32:30.559,0:32:37.760
months um she told me i was able to um
0:32:34.240,0:32:38.640
do the work much easier so um i kind of
0:32:37.760,0:32:42.159
had that
0:32:38.640,0:32:43.919
not getting enough sleep it’s something
0:32:42.159,0:32:44.799
that i’m pretty sure many people suffer
0:32:43.919,0:32:48.159
from
0:32:44.799,0:32:50.399
and i mean i’ve gotten better but i
0:32:48.159,0:32:51.600
i don’t have a specific sleep schedule
0:32:50.399,0:32:55.200
anymore so
0:32:51.600,0:32:57.840
i kind of need to work on that okay
0:32:55.200,0:32:58.720
so next so the final group we have for
0:32:57.840,0:33:01.200
this segment
0:32:58.720,0:33:02.399
is personality traits that contribute to
0:33:01.200,0:33:05.760
burnout
0:33:02.399,0:33:06.960
now um this was something interesting i
0:33:05.760,0:33:08.799
found because i had no idea that
0:33:06.960,0:33:11.120
personality traits could have
0:33:08.799,0:33:12.960
influence so let me know if you have any
0:33:11.120,0:33:15.440
of these personality traits
0:33:12.960,0:33:16.399
and if you can understand why they’d be
0:33:15.440,0:33:19.200
called
0:33:16.399,0:33:21.279
why they’d be connected to burnout so
0:33:19.200,0:33:24.080
some personality traits can be
0:33:21.279,0:33:25.200
perfectionist tendencies nothing is ever
0:33:24.080,0:33:27.120
good enough
0:33:25.200,0:33:28.320
pessimistic view of yourself and the
0:33:27.120,0:33:32.240
world
0:33:28.320,0:33:35.919
then you needing to be in control
0:33:32.240,0:33:39.039
or reluctance to delegate to others
0:33:35.919,0:33:42.080
a high achieving type a personality
0:33:39.039,0:33:42.960
so are any of the personalities some
0:33:42.080,0:33:45.679
things that
0:33:42.960,0:33:47.120
you’ve experienced uh some of these
0:33:45.679,0:33:50.720
things yeah um
0:33:47.120,0:33:55.120
i don’t think i’m a perfectionist myself
0:33:50.720,0:33:57.919
um i’m a mostly good enough type of
0:33:55.120,0:34:01.039
person i tend to impose some of the
0:33:57.919,0:34:02.799
perfectionist stuff on other people
0:34:01.039,0:34:04.399
and i think some of my employees at work
0:34:02.799,0:34:06.399
would attest to that i can be pretty
0:34:04.399,0:34:08.480
annoying with that
0:34:06.399,0:34:10.159
the pessimistic side of things yeah i
0:34:08.480,0:34:12.399
mean i don’t think
0:34:10.159,0:34:14.399
i don’t think i’m pessimistic i consider
0:34:12.399,0:34:17.280
myself realistic
0:34:14.399,0:34:18.960
you have a lot of people who are
0:34:17.280,0:34:20.240
optimistic to the point of being
0:34:18.960,0:34:22.000
delusional
0:34:20.240,0:34:24.159
where they always think it’s going to
0:34:22.000,0:34:26.639
turn out right in the end
0:34:24.159,0:34:28.960
and i come from a background in
0:34:26.639,0:34:32.720
emergency management
0:34:28.960,0:34:35.359
where i learned that you always have to
0:34:32.720,0:34:37.119
hope for the best but plan for the worst
0:34:35.359,0:34:39.280
and that planning for the worst tends to
0:34:37.119,0:34:40.320
have get me labeled as a pessimist a lot
0:34:39.280,0:34:42.240
of times
0:34:40.320,0:34:44.000
and really it’s just a matter of making
0:34:42.240,0:34:46.159
sure that you’re prepared for when
0:34:44.000,0:34:48.399
things happen
0:34:46.159,0:34:49.440
but you hope they don’t you know i would
0:34:48.399,0:34:53.119
much rather spend
0:34:49.440,0:34:54.159
10 hours preparing for a storm that’s
0:34:53.119,0:34:55.919
coming
0:34:54.159,0:34:57.440
you know battening down the hatches
0:34:55.919,0:34:59.520
cleaning up stuff that’s in the air all
0:34:57.440,0:35:02.720
that type of stuff
0:34:59.520,0:35:04.480
rather than do nothing and then have
0:35:02.720,0:35:06.560
you know thousands of dollars in storm
0:35:04.480,0:35:08.320
damage afterwards
0:35:06.560,0:35:10.079
so i i don’t have a problem putting the
0:35:08.320,0:35:11.839
effort in
0:35:10.079,0:35:14.560
and appearing pessimistic because i
0:35:11.839,0:35:18.079
think something’s going to go wrong
0:35:14.560,0:35:21.280
the need to be in control i
0:35:18.079,0:35:23.119
i do when i don’t um i’ve never been the
0:35:21.280,0:35:26.160
type of person who was a very good
0:35:23.119,0:35:27.760
follower um because i tend to be very
0:35:26.160,0:35:29.200
critical of the decisions that other
0:35:27.760,0:35:31.520
people make
0:35:29.200,0:35:34.560
and i just assume take on the
0:35:31.520,0:35:36.720
responsibility of making those decisions
0:35:34.560,0:35:38.640
because i have a very analytical way of
0:35:36.720,0:35:41.200
looking at things
0:35:38.640,0:35:43.680
a lot of people that i’ve worked with or
0:35:41.200,0:35:47.839
worked for in the past
0:35:43.680,0:35:50.800
tend to make uneducated decisions
0:35:47.839,0:35:52.800
which when they make them i i have the
0:35:50.800,0:35:54.720
luxury of sitting back and saying well i
0:35:52.800,0:35:56.640
wouldn’t do that because these five
0:35:54.720,0:35:58.400
things could happen
0:35:56.640,0:36:00.079
and then when one of those five things
0:35:58.400,0:36:02.400
happen
0:36:00.079,0:36:04.800
i you know invariably on the type of
0:36:02.400,0:36:06.320
person who will say i told you so
0:36:04.800,0:36:07.599
you know so you should have listened to
0:36:06.320,0:36:09.520
me in the first place and again that
0:36:07.599,0:36:10.079
also makes me look like a pessimist too
0:36:09.520,0:36:11.440
because
0:36:10.079,0:36:14.160
up front i’m telling you what’s going to
0:36:11.440,0:36:15.920
go wrong but it’s really a matter of
0:36:14.160,0:36:19.839
planning ahead
0:36:15.920,0:36:22.560
um high achieving type a personality
0:36:19.839,0:36:23.200
that’s probably not me i think i’m a
0:36:22.560,0:36:26.800
type a
0:36:23.200,0:36:30.800
from a don’t like to
0:36:26.800,0:36:33.920
follow people um but it’s not because
0:36:30.800,0:36:35.599
i need to be the best i’m not very i’m
0:36:33.920,0:36:38.320
competitive in certain things
0:36:35.599,0:36:40.000
like a type a personality but there are
0:36:38.320,0:36:41.760
other things that i’m willing to to
0:36:40.000,0:36:43.520
sit back and delegate and let other
0:36:41.760,0:36:45.280
people do
0:36:43.520,0:36:47.280
what about you what is your how does
0:36:45.280,0:36:51.280
your personality fit into these
0:36:47.280,0:36:53.839
models well for perfectionist tendencies
0:36:51.280,0:36:55.040
most of the time things are good enough
0:36:53.839,0:36:58.640
unless
0:36:55.040,0:37:00.160
it mainly requires my creative ability
0:36:58.640,0:37:02.560
at that point my perfectionist
0:37:00.160,0:37:04.079
tendencies are in full swing
0:37:02.560,0:37:05.920
like i can look at a drawing i made and
0:37:04.079,0:37:07.040
i’m like oh there’s a mistake there
0:37:05.920,0:37:09.359
gotta fix that
0:37:07.040,0:37:11.040
the eyes are too close together or the
0:37:09.359,0:37:12.079
eyes don’t look right or something like
0:37:11.040,0:37:14.880
that
0:37:12.079,0:37:16.560
um but when i’m tired and i’m doing
0:37:14.880,0:37:20.079
something creative i’m like
0:37:16.560,0:37:23.680
uh whatever good enough good enough
0:37:20.079,0:37:26.400
um for the pessimistic view um
0:37:23.680,0:37:27.280
definitely before um i had a very
0:37:26.400,0:37:30.400
negative
0:37:27.280,0:37:31.760
look on myself and the world well mainly
0:37:30.400,0:37:35.040
the world
0:37:31.760,0:37:37.920
um i never really was able to see
0:37:35.040,0:37:38.960
the ups i’ve definitely gotten better i
0:37:37.920,0:37:41.280
have more of a
0:37:38.960,0:37:42.320
realistic standard like you have but
0:37:41.280,0:37:45.760
what’s changed
0:37:42.320,0:37:46.320
what caused that to change well um for
0:37:45.760,0:37:49.680
one thing
0:37:46.320,0:37:52.000
the influence of you i um
0:37:49.680,0:37:53.680
i noticed how you saw the world like
0:37:52.000,0:37:54.720
there’s always going to be ups and downs
0:37:53.680,0:37:58.560
to everything
0:37:54.720,0:38:00.480
and especially the main example like
0:37:58.560,0:38:03.280
some people see the glass out full some
0:38:00.480,0:38:07.440
people see it half empty you see it is
0:38:03.280,0:38:07.440
you see it as there’s
0:38:07.680,0:38:12.079
how did you see it again how how you
0:38:10.480,0:38:13.760
know how did that liquid get there
0:38:12.079,0:38:15.440
yeah did it get there by pouring it in
0:38:13.760,0:38:17.680
or to get it by pouring it out
0:38:15.440,0:38:20.240
yeah you have the more realistic view
0:38:17.680,0:38:22.079
and that was definitely a big influencer
0:38:20.240,0:38:23.040
for me to stop thinking about the
0:38:22.079,0:38:25.280
negatives
0:38:23.040,0:38:26.240
and you also said that if you think
0:38:25.280,0:38:28.320
about the negatives
0:38:26.240,0:38:30.400
everything’s gonna go wrong for that day
0:38:28.320,0:38:32.240
and i mean you were right when i started
0:38:30.400,0:38:33.520
thinking more positive things started to
0:38:32.240,0:38:36.240
go better
0:38:33.520,0:38:38.240
um so it was sort of a mental um
0:38:36.240,0:38:40.320
inspiration from you so awesome
0:38:38.240,0:38:42.240
well i’m glad to hear that um for the
0:38:40.320,0:38:46.000
need to be in control
0:38:42.240,0:38:47.920
before i kinda had that tendency
0:38:46.000,0:38:49.839
it was sort of more of when i was
0:38:47.920,0:38:51.920
definitely a more perfectionist
0:38:49.839,0:38:54.000
and it was mainly with group projects
0:38:51.920,0:38:56.160
because there’s always going to be that
0:38:54.000,0:38:58.560
one person who wants everything
0:38:56.160,0:39:00.160
to be right so they get a good grade and
0:38:58.560,0:39:03.599
i was kind of that person
0:39:00.160,0:39:06.880
like i was focused on the project
0:39:03.599,0:39:09.599
and i wanted everything to get done and
0:39:06.880,0:39:10.320
even and like even now i kind of have
0:39:09.599,0:39:13.440
that
0:39:10.320,0:39:16.160
but i’m way less controlling i
0:39:13.440,0:39:18.079
like i give everyone different parts i
0:39:16.160,0:39:20.240
help them out if they need it
0:39:18.079,0:39:21.920
um i’m definitely way less controlling
0:39:20.240,0:39:23.599
than i used to be
0:39:21.920,0:39:25.760
um but i still have that sense of
0:39:23.599,0:39:27.680
control especially when people don’t do
0:39:25.760,0:39:28.000
their parts i’m that person who has to
0:39:27.680,0:39:30.480
do
0:39:28.000,0:39:32.160
most of the project and everyone gets
0:39:30.480,0:39:35.200
the credits so
0:39:32.160,0:39:38.320
yeah i understand that
0:39:35.200,0:39:38.800
all righty uh for the high achieving i
0:39:38.320,0:39:42.079
mean
0:39:38.800,0:39:42.880
i set pretty high expectations for
0:39:42.079,0:39:46.960
myself
0:39:42.880,0:39:49.359
and i don’t normally always achieve them
0:39:46.960,0:39:50.480
and that kind of has a negative effect
0:39:49.359,0:39:54.960
on my
0:39:50.480,0:39:57.359
um mental on my mental aspect of it
0:39:54.960,0:39:59.359
but um i’m not entirely sure i’d be
0:39:57.359,0:40:01.920
extremely high achieving
0:39:59.359,0:40:03.680
like i’m still somewhat saying good
0:40:01.920,0:40:06.079
enough but with certain things
0:40:03.680,0:40:06.960
my perfect like i said my perfectionist
0:40:06.079,0:40:08.480
is like
0:40:06.960,0:40:11.440
okay we gotta make sure we’re good
0:40:08.480,0:40:14.960
enough we’ve got to make sure everything
0:40:11.440,0:40:18.160
is good and perfect and great
0:40:14.960,0:40:18.880
and amazing um and for some other things
0:40:18.160,0:40:23.280
it’s just like
0:40:18.880,0:40:26.720
eh it’s good enough right so yeah
0:40:23.280,0:40:29.200
um when we um
0:40:26.720,0:40:30.640
come back we are going to talk about
0:40:29.200,0:40:38.000
dealing with burnout
0:40:30.640,0:40:40.720
okay sounds good
0:40:38.000,0:40:42.079
so once again i have this sort of split
0:40:40.720,0:40:44.480
into smaller groups
0:40:42.079,0:40:46.400
so there are many different ways on how
0:40:44.480,0:40:48.880
you can deal with burnout
0:40:46.400,0:40:50.400
and the first way is to turn to others
0:40:48.880,0:40:52.560
when you are burned out is
0:40:50.400,0:40:54.640
it is difficult to take action you even
0:40:52.560,0:40:56.319
care to try and help yourself
0:40:54.640,0:40:58.079
but there are some positive steps you
0:40:56.319,0:40:59.040
can take to deal with overwhelming
0:40:58.079,0:41:01.839
stress
0:40:59.040,0:41:03.520
and get your life balanced one way is to
0:41:01.839,0:41:06.480
reach out to others
0:41:03.520,0:41:06.960
um and i definitely agree with that
0:41:06.480,0:41:09.680
because
0:41:06.960,0:41:10.800
other people like like you said you
0:41:09.680,0:41:13.599
normally turn uh
0:41:10.800,0:41:14.480
us to ha when you are burned out um to
0:41:13.599,0:41:18.880
have
0:41:14.480,0:41:21.760
our positive energy and excessive energy
0:41:18.880,0:41:22.800
flow through you to make you feel better
0:41:21.760,0:41:25.359
absolutely and i
0:41:22.800,0:41:26.560
and i think a lot of people who are
0:41:25.359,0:41:29.760
fortunate enough to
0:41:26.560,0:41:30.720
have the kind of support structure that
0:41:29.760,0:41:33.839
we have
0:41:30.720,0:41:35.520
from a close family can lean on that
0:41:33.839,0:41:37.040
family a lot some people lean on
0:41:35.520,0:41:39.200
extended family
0:41:37.040,0:41:41.359
some people lean on their friends some
0:41:39.200,0:41:43.839
it’s just their co-workers
0:41:41.359,0:41:46.560
but i think everyone at some point in
0:41:43.839,0:41:48.720
time needs someone that they can turn to
0:41:46.560,0:41:50.800
if for no other reason to just confide
0:41:48.720,0:41:52.720
in and unload
0:41:50.800,0:41:55.280
when you when you talk to someone about
0:41:52.720,0:41:57.119
the burdens that you face
0:41:55.280,0:41:58.800
you sort of spread that burden out
0:41:57.119,0:42:00.480
across multiple people and you don’t
0:41:58.800,0:42:03.040
feel like the world is all
0:42:00.480,0:42:04.000
squarely you know on your shoulders at
0:42:03.040,0:42:07.359
that point
0:42:04.000,0:42:08.880
yeah definitely so um
0:42:07.359,0:42:10.400
there are a few ways on how you can
0:42:08.880,0:42:13.040
reach out to other people
0:42:10.400,0:42:14.480
and i’ll give you each one and you can
0:42:13.040,0:42:18.400
tell me if you agree with it
0:42:14.480,0:42:21.440
so the person closest to you such as a
0:42:18.400,0:42:24.160
such as your partner family and friends
0:42:21.440,0:42:24.720
opening up won’t make you a burden to
0:42:24.160,0:42:27.520
others
0:42:24.720,0:42:29.200
in fact most friends and family would be
0:42:27.520,0:42:30.000
flattered that you trust them enough to
0:42:29.200,0:42:32.319
con
0:42:30.000,0:42:34.000
to confide in them strengthening your
0:42:32.319,0:42:34.720
relationship with them now do you agree
0:42:34.000,0:42:37.520
with that
0:42:34.720,0:42:39.520
absolutely um you know you don’t want to
0:42:37.520,0:42:41.440
be a burden to other people
0:42:39.520,0:42:42.960
but just the ability to talk about these
0:42:41.440,0:42:46.079
things can help
0:42:42.960,0:42:47.920
and you may not expect or need any kind
0:42:46.079,0:42:50.480
of response or anything that
0:42:47.920,0:42:52.800
that comes back from that other person
0:42:50.480,0:42:54.880
but just the ability to talk through the
0:42:52.800,0:42:55.760
issues themselves can be a huge
0:42:54.880,0:42:57.920
improvement
0:42:55.760,0:42:59.359
yeah definitely with you i definitely
0:42:57.920,0:43:01.760
felt like with you guys
0:42:59.359,0:43:04.079
i like you already know i felt as though
0:43:01.760,0:43:06.480
it was a burden to you guys because
0:43:04.079,0:43:09.280
i’d constantly come home with my
0:43:06.480,0:43:11.599
problems i tell you guys about it and
0:43:09.280,0:43:13.119
you try your best to try and fix it and
0:43:11.599,0:43:14.720
at that point i kind of felt like a
0:43:13.119,0:43:17.119
burden to you guys but
0:43:14.720,0:43:18.000
you you’re my parents i’m meant to be a
0:43:17.119,0:43:19.920
burden on you guys
0:43:18.000,0:43:21.280
right and that is why we described you
0:43:19.920,0:43:25.680
as our little burden
0:43:21.280,0:43:28.079
yep uh next up is being social with your
0:43:25.680,0:43:30.079
co-workers
0:43:28.079,0:43:31.839
developing friendships with the people
0:43:30.079,0:43:34.880
you work with can help you
0:43:31.839,0:43:36.720
can help buffer you from job burnout
0:43:34.880,0:43:38.000
when you take a break instead of
0:43:36.720,0:43:39.839
directing your attention
0:43:38.000,0:43:41.839
to your smartphone try engaging with
0:43:39.839,0:43:44.800
your colleague colleagues now
0:43:41.839,0:43:46.400
this might not be um you know relevant
0:43:44.800,0:43:48.960
in your case since you’re not the most
0:43:46.400,0:43:50.480
sociable person like you stated before
0:43:48.960,0:43:53.359
but do you at least agree with it for
0:43:50.480,0:43:54.000
other people i do and i have a friendly
0:43:53.359,0:43:56.560
relationship
0:43:54.000,0:43:58.480
the i think the reason this is less
0:43:56.560,0:44:02.319
applicable to me
0:43:58.480,0:44:04.880
is the people that i interact with most
0:44:02.319,0:44:06.160
at work are the people that are on my
0:44:04.880,0:44:08.880
staff
0:44:06.160,0:44:11.040
and i’m the type of person i’m a very
0:44:08.880,0:44:14.480
old-fashioned person when it comes to
0:44:11.040,0:44:16.880
you know management like that where
0:44:14.480,0:44:18.960
i don’t think a manager should have a
0:44:16.880,0:44:21.680
very close personal relationship with
0:44:18.960,0:44:23.680
his employees his or her employees
0:44:21.680,0:44:26.400
because it makes doing your job as a
0:44:23.680,0:44:28.800
manager much more difficult
0:44:26.400,0:44:30.000
sometimes you have to make difficult
0:44:28.800,0:44:32.079
decisions at work
0:44:30.000,0:44:33.119
sometimes you have to say no or you have
0:44:32.079,0:44:36.160
to discipline your
0:44:33.119,0:44:39.119
employees and when
0:44:36.160,0:44:40.480
you have a very close personal
0:44:39.119,0:44:42.160
relationship with them it makes that
0:44:40.480,0:44:44.240
difficult so
0:44:42.160,0:44:45.599
while i’m friendly with my employees i
0:44:44.240,0:44:49.280
can’t
0:44:45.599,0:44:51.920
have this kind of interaction with them
0:44:49.280,0:44:53.119
and i don’t really interact frequently
0:44:51.920,0:44:56.000
with other people
0:44:53.119,0:44:56.400
in the organization we’re kind of we’re
0:44:56.000,0:44:57.760
i.t
0:44:56.400,0:44:59.920
we’re the weird guys that are kept in
0:44:57.760,0:45:01.760
the corner you know so
0:44:59.920,0:45:03.200
there’s not a lot of interaction that i
0:45:01.760,0:45:06.079
have
0:45:03.200,0:45:06.800
but should i need to go and talk to my
0:45:06.079,0:45:09.359
manager
0:45:06.800,0:45:10.640
or one of the other uh executives in the
0:45:09.359,0:45:12.800
company i
0:45:10.640,0:45:14.560
i feel totally confident that i could if
0:45:12.800,0:45:16.720
i needed to
0:45:14.560,0:45:18.160
i just don’t do it because i don’t i
0:45:16.720,0:45:20.000
don’t interact with them on a regular
0:45:18.160,0:45:20.240
basis as it is but there are times that
0:45:20.000,0:45:23.920
i
0:45:20.240,0:45:27.119
i have had to do that but it’s less
0:45:23.920,0:45:30.000
applicable to me i think
0:45:27.119,0:45:32.400
um and the final part for this one is
0:45:30.000,0:45:34.400
limit your contact with negative people
0:45:32.400,0:45:36.640
hanging out with negative minded people
0:45:34.400,0:45:37.520
who do nothing but complain will only
0:45:36.640,0:45:40.720
drag you
0:45:37.520,0:45:43.040
down your mood and outlook if you have
0:45:40.720,0:45:44.960
to work with a negative person try to
0:45:43.040,0:45:48.079
limit the amount of time you spend
0:45:44.960,0:45:50.480
together now would you agree with
0:45:48.079,0:45:51.760
limiting contact with negative people
0:45:50.480,0:45:54.880
absolutely i don’t
0:45:51.760,0:45:55.359
even you know i go beyond the limiting
0:45:54.880,0:45:58.960
to
0:45:55.359,0:46:02.880
eliminating contact with negative people
0:45:58.960,0:46:06.400
you know i run a gaming group online and
0:46:02.880,0:46:07.200
we have you know three 400 people in our
0:46:06.400,0:46:10.079
gaming group
0:46:07.200,0:46:11.839
that i interact with on a regular basis
0:46:10.079,0:46:13.839
and the people that are the negative
0:46:11.839,0:46:16.079
ones tend to work themselves out of that
0:46:13.839,0:46:18.319
group pretty quickly because
0:46:16.079,0:46:19.520
the core group of people that are in the
0:46:18.319,0:46:22.560
in that
0:46:19.520,0:46:24.720
guild are like-minded to me
0:46:22.560,0:46:26.319
you know we’re very accepting we’re very
0:46:24.720,0:46:28.560
positive or very
0:46:26.319,0:46:30.720
i’d even say outgoing but outgoing in an
0:46:28.560,0:46:32.400
online sort of way
0:46:30.720,0:46:34.560
and the people that come in that are
0:46:32.400,0:46:36.800
negative they get into the group because
0:46:34.560,0:46:38.960
we’re open and accepting
0:46:36.800,0:46:40.720
but when they see that the group really
0:46:38.960,0:46:42.800
doesn’t support that kind of personality
0:46:40.720,0:46:44.400
they work their way out quickly
0:46:42.800,0:46:46.800
and i try to adhere to that same
0:46:44.400,0:46:48.079
philosophy in life and and not be around
0:46:46.800,0:46:49.280
negative people because they’re just
0:46:48.079,0:46:52.480
going to drag you down
0:46:49.280,0:46:56.240
yeah so the
0:46:52.480,0:46:59.119
second way you can how you can um
0:46:56.240,0:47:00.400
deal with burnout is reframe the way you
0:46:59.119,0:47:02.560
look at work
0:47:00.400,0:47:03.440
whether you have a job that leaves you
0:47:02.560,0:47:06.079
rushed
0:47:03.440,0:47:08.560
or one that is unfulfilling the most
0:47:06.079,0:47:11.680
effective way to combat
0:47:08.560,0:47:13.599
to combat job burnout is to either quit
0:47:11.680,0:47:15.599
and find a job you love instead
0:47:13.599,0:47:17.599
of course for many of us changing our
0:47:15.599,0:47:18.720
job is far from being a practical
0:47:17.599,0:47:21.839
situation
0:47:18.720,0:47:23.920
we have to work to pay the bills
0:47:21.839,0:47:25.599
whatever your situation though there are
0:47:23.920,0:47:27.040
still some steps you can take to improve
0:47:25.599,0:47:29.680
your state of mind
0:47:27.040,0:47:30.960
now once again i want to see if you can
0:47:29.680,0:47:34.480
agree with these
0:47:30.960,0:47:37.119
so try to find some value in your work
0:47:34.480,0:47:38.000
even if in some mundane jobs you can
0:47:37.119,0:47:40.079
often focus
0:47:38.000,0:47:42.160
on how your role helps others or
0:47:40.079,0:47:43.200
provides a much needed product of
0:47:42.160,0:47:47.200
service
0:47:43.200,0:47:50.720
focus focus on aspects of the job that
0:47:47.200,0:47:52.319
you do that you do enjoy even if it’s
0:47:50.720,0:47:53.119
just chatting with your co-workers at
0:47:52.319,0:47:55.599
lunch
0:47:53.119,0:47:56.559
changing your attitude towards your job
0:47:55.599,0:47:59.920
can help you
0:47:56.559,0:48:03.040
regain a sense of purpose and control
0:47:59.920,0:48:05.280
now do you agree with this i do and and
0:48:03.040,0:48:06.880
that can be challenging at times
0:48:05.280,0:48:10.000
and it’s one of those things where you
0:48:06.880,0:48:11.920
have to find the positive in things
0:48:10.000,0:48:13.040
when you get cynical and you get
0:48:11.920,0:48:15.599
negative and you get
0:48:13.040,0:48:16.800
beat down it’s hard to find the
0:48:15.599,0:48:20.720
positives
0:48:16.800,0:48:22.319
now i would turn this around and ask you
0:48:20.720,0:48:23.839
to look at it from the perspective of
0:48:22.319,0:48:26.079
school you know
0:48:23.839,0:48:27.200
how would you find value in your
0:48:26.079,0:48:29.760
schoolwork
0:48:27.200,0:48:30.400
if you reach a situation like this i
0:48:29.760,0:48:33.599
mean
0:48:30.400,0:48:35.839
i would say look at how your
0:48:33.599,0:48:37.040
look at like find enjoyment that you
0:48:35.839,0:48:40.319
find like
0:48:37.040,0:48:42.800
in your work like do you enjoy
0:48:40.319,0:48:43.920
what in part of your work do you enjoy
0:48:42.800,0:48:46.800
do you enjoy
0:48:43.920,0:48:48.720
having creative liberty and projects do
0:48:46.800,0:48:50.240
you enjoy
0:48:48.720,0:48:52.160
giving your opinion on certain
0:48:50.240,0:48:54.800
situations and
0:48:52.160,0:48:57.119
outside of school work do you enjoy
0:48:54.800,0:49:00.160
hanging out with your friends at lunch
0:48:57.119,0:49:01.040
do you enjoy some of the extracurricular
0:49:00.160,0:49:05.119
activities like
0:49:01.040,0:49:08.720
art or music or do you enjoy
0:49:05.119,0:49:10.800
or you do enjoy being active at gym
0:49:08.720,0:49:12.800
not exactly relevant to me but you know
0:49:10.800,0:49:15.119
right
0:49:12.800,0:49:16.880
okay so yeah i definitely agree with
0:49:15.119,0:49:18.960
looking for the positives in any
0:49:16.880,0:49:22.000
situation
0:49:18.960,0:49:22.559
so next up we have find balance in your
0:49:22.000,0:49:25.760
life
0:49:22.559,0:49:29.040
if you hate your job look for meaningful
0:49:25.760,0:49:30.559
s and satisfaction everywhere else in
0:49:29.040,0:49:33.440
your life
0:49:30.559,0:49:34.400
like in your family friends hobbies or
0:49:33.440,0:49:37.440
volunteering
0:49:34.400,0:49:39.200
or voluntary work focus on the parts of
0:49:37.440,0:49:40.480
your life that bring you joy now would
0:49:39.200,0:49:43.440
you agree with that
0:49:40.480,0:49:45.280
i think that’s probably the the best
0:49:43.440,0:49:46.160
coping mechanism that you could come up
0:49:45.280,0:49:49.119
with
0:49:46.160,0:49:49.520
um not everyone i’m very fortunate in my
0:49:49.119,0:49:54.079
work
0:49:49.520,0:49:56.640
in in that i get to do what i love to do
0:49:54.079,0:49:59.599
working with technology and i get to do
0:49:56.640,0:50:02.400
it for a company that respects me
0:49:59.599,0:50:04.000
and owners that i respect not
0:50:02.400,0:50:05.520
everybody’s that fortune
0:50:04.000,0:50:07.119
you know sometimes especially when
0:50:05.520,0:50:08.559
you’re early on in your career and
0:50:07.119,0:50:10.880
you’re starting out
0:50:08.559,0:50:12.800
you kind of have to do your turn in the
0:50:10.880,0:50:13.920
trenches and i did that there were a lot
0:50:12.800,0:50:16.800
of
0:50:13.920,0:50:18.559
jobs that i had that i didn’t like but i
0:50:16.800,0:50:20.800
had to pay the bills
0:50:18.559,0:50:23.200
so you sort of grin and bear it you go
0:50:20.800,0:50:25.119
you do your work you come home
0:50:23.200,0:50:26.960
and it’s that support system you have at
0:50:25.119,0:50:29.280
home that kind of keeps you going
0:50:26.960,0:50:30.000
that’s what you look forward to i like
0:50:29.280,0:50:32.480
to this day
0:50:30.000,0:50:34.559
even though i love what i do i don’t
0:50:32.480,0:50:37.760
work to live
0:50:34.559,0:50:39.599
i don’t live to work i work to live
0:50:37.760,0:50:41.599
and it’s when i when i walk out of the
0:50:39.599,0:50:44.880
office and i come home
0:50:41.599,0:50:49.599
that’s when you know that
0:50:44.880,0:50:51.200
peaceful relaxing enjoyment time starts
0:50:49.599,0:50:53.440
how do you feel about that when it comes
0:50:51.200,0:50:56.160
to school work i mean yeah
0:50:53.440,0:50:58.319
i’m pretty sure many of my many students
0:50:56.160,0:51:01.200
my age would definitely agree with that
0:50:58.319,0:51:03.040
like going home after a really long day
0:51:01.200,0:51:04.960
of work especially if you had a bunch of
0:51:03.040,0:51:06.800
tests that you had to study for
0:51:04.960,0:51:09.119
realizing that you can now have the
0:51:06.800,0:51:11.440
satisfaction of relaxing and especially
0:51:09.119,0:51:13.599
if you have a good supportive family
0:51:11.440,0:51:14.800
um it’s definitely one of the best
0:51:13.599,0:51:17.520
things that happened
0:51:14.800,0:51:19.839
especially when i was in sixth grade
0:51:17.520,0:51:22.480
coming home was the best part of the day
0:51:19.839,0:51:23.520
i was able to unwind from anything bad
0:51:22.480,0:51:25.359
that would have happened
0:51:23.520,0:51:28.079
and i was able to hang out with you guys
0:51:25.359,0:51:31.119
so i definitely would support it as well
0:51:28.079,0:51:33.599
nice um next up
0:51:31.119,0:51:34.400
we have once again making friends at
0:51:33.599,0:51:36.559
work
0:51:34.400,0:51:37.760
having strong ties in the workplace can
0:51:36.559,0:51:42.559
help reduce the
0:51:37.760,0:51:46.079
counter the account reduce the counter
0:51:42.559,0:51:49.040
effects of burnout many friends
0:51:46.079,0:51:50.079
having friends to chat and joke with
0:51:49.040,0:51:53.200
during the day
0:51:50.079,0:51:55.200
can help can help relieve stress from an
0:51:53.200,0:51:57.920
unfulfilling or demanding job
0:51:55.200,0:51:58.880
improving your job performance or simply
0:51:57.920,0:52:00.880
get you through
0:51:58.880,0:52:03.760
through a rough day would you agree with
0:52:00.880,0:52:04.640
that i would agree with the concept of
0:52:03.760,0:52:07.520
it
0:52:04.640,0:52:10.720
um i don’t practice that myself because
0:52:07.520,0:52:14.000
i really don’t have any friends
0:52:10.720,0:52:16.319
but do you find that that works for you
0:52:14.000,0:52:17.119
when coping with school stress and
0:52:16.319,0:52:20.400
burnout
0:52:17.119,0:52:23.680
i mean yeah whenever i um when we were
0:52:20.400,0:52:24.960
able to go in school normally um lunch
0:52:23.680,0:52:26.640
was one of the best parts of the day
0:52:24.960,0:52:28.640
because i was able to see one of my best
0:52:26.640,0:52:31.119
friends we were able to talk and
0:52:28.640,0:52:32.319
unwind with each other about what had
0:52:31.119,0:52:35.520
happened through the day
0:52:32.319,0:52:38.160
and we were able to get um through
0:52:35.520,0:52:38.640
our whatever small issues we were going
0:52:38.160,0:52:41.119
through
0:52:38.640,0:52:42.640
and we were just having a good time and
0:52:41.119,0:52:44.400
i also look forward to the end of the
0:52:42.640,0:52:46.079
day not because i was able to go home
0:52:44.400,0:52:48.000
but because that was another time where
0:52:46.079,0:52:50.480
i saw one of my other friends
0:52:48.000,0:52:51.440
um and we walked the bus to our buses
0:52:50.480,0:52:53.839
together
0:52:51.440,0:52:55.760
able to talk about what happened
0:52:53.839,0:52:58.640
unwinding with each other and
0:52:55.760,0:53:00.000
especially in and when i was in sixth
0:52:58.640,0:53:02.640
grade even like
0:53:00.000,0:53:03.119
at recess that same friend we would just
0:53:02.640,0:53:05.440
sit
0:53:03.119,0:53:07.119
um at the side while the other people
0:53:05.440,0:53:08.000
played and we just talked with each
0:53:07.119,0:53:11.760
other
0:53:08.000,0:53:15.440
so i definitely would um agree with that
0:53:11.760,0:53:18.400
nice um and for the final one
0:53:15.440,0:53:19.040
um for this segment we have take time
0:53:18.400,0:53:21.680
off
0:53:19.040,0:53:23.440
if run out seems inevitable try to take
0:53:21.680,0:53:26.000
a complete break from work
0:53:23.440,0:53:28.079
go on vacation use up your sick days ask
0:53:26.000,0:53:29.680
for a temporary leave of absence
0:53:28.079,0:53:32.800
anything to remove yourself from the
0:53:29.680,0:53:34.400
situation use the time away to recharge
0:53:32.800,0:53:37.040
your batteries and
0:53:34.400,0:53:38.319
and pursue other methods of recovery now
0:53:37.040,0:53:41.680
would you agree with that
0:53:38.319,0:53:42.559
i would agree 100 with this this is that
0:53:41.680,0:53:44.319
thing
0:53:42.559,0:53:46.000
and mommy will even tell you that you
0:53:44.319,0:53:47.599
kind of have to have something to look
0:53:46.000,0:53:49.440
forward to
0:53:47.599,0:53:51.520
you can’t just go to work five days a
0:53:49.440,0:53:53.200
week come home go back to work five days
0:53:51.520,0:53:54.559
a week and just keep doing that cycle
0:53:53.200,0:53:56.000
over and over
0:53:54.559,0:53:58.160
you need to have something whether it’s
0:53:56.000,0:54:01.440
spring break in school
0:53:58.160,0:54:02.000
summer vacation uh a trip to disney
0:54:01.440,0:54:03.839
whatever it
0:54:02.000,0:54:05.760
is you have to have that goal that
0:54:03.839,0:54:08.160
you’re shooting for
0:54:05.760,0:54:10.800
that you know that’s the line you’ve
0:54:08.160,0:54:12.640
drawn in the sand once you get to that
0:54:10.800,0:54:14.480
point you’re going to de-stress
0:54:12.640,0:54:15.839
you’re going to clear out you know all
0:54:14.480,0:54:17.280
the cobwebs that in your head you’re
0:54:15.839,0:54:18.800
going to go off
0:54:17.280,0:54:20.000
you’re going to enjoy yourself and then
0:54:18.800,0:54:22.640
you’re going to come back and start it
0:54:20.000,0:54:25.599
all over again
0:54:22.640,0:54:27.359
life is cyclic for us you know up until
0:54:25.599,0:54:29.599
the point that you retire probably and
0:54:27.359,0:54:32.880
then you go into a different cycle
0:54:29.599,0:54:34.880
but you have to work to survive and
0:54:32.880,0:54:36.839
in order to cope with that you have to
0:54:34.880,0:54:39.200
have these little breaks
0:54:36.839,0:54:40.720
um what would happen to you if you
0:54:39.200,0:54:43.440
didn’t have
0:54:40.720,0:54:44.559
uh a winter break or a spring break or a
0:54:43.440,0:54:46.640
summer break what
0:54:44.559,0:54:48.640
like how stressful would that be if you
0:54:46.640,0:54:51.839
just went to school endlessly
0:54:48.640,0:54:54.799
i mean like for one it’d be very
0:54:51.839,0:54:57.920
confusing because you just be working 24
0:54:54.799,0:54:59.680
7 and you definitely have way more and
0:54:57.920,0:55:01.920
you’d have a higher chance of getting
0:54:59.680,0:55:04.839
burnout with all the stress that you
0:55:01.920,0:55:08.319
have to go through
0:55:04.839,0:55:12.720
like you couldn’t be working like 24
0:55:08.319,0:55:16.799
7 like like if you don’t have any breaks
0:55:12.720,0:55:20.000
like even in other things like
0:55:16.799,0:55:22.160
you would have to um
0:55:20.000,0:55:23.520
you’d have to take breaks taking breaks
0:55:22.160,0:55:26.160
is the most important thing
0:55:23.520,0:55:27.040
and you just need to take breaks and
0:55:26.160,0:55:30.319
everything
0:55:27.040,0:55:30.880
i agree so when we come back we’ll go
0:55:30.319,0:55:33.200
with
0:55:30.880,0:55:34.250
my closing remarks and shout outs
0:55:33.200,0:55:40.000
alrighty
0:55:34.250,0:55:42.400
[Music]
0:55:40.000,0:55:43.040
so for my closing remarks today i’m just
0:55:42.400,0:55:45.200

0:55:43.040,0:55:47.280
that if you are experiencing any of the
0:55:45.200,0:55:50.559
symptoms of burnout
0:55:47.280,0:55:51.920
um please do try any of the methods that
0:55:50.559,0:55:55.040
we’ve listed today
0:55:51.920,0:55:58.000
and if they don’t help then try looking
0:55:55.040,0:55:59.280
for professional help we aren’t the most
0:55:58.000,0:56:02.799
professional podcast
0:55:59.280,0:56:03.920
ever um and we we just give out
0:56:02.799,0:56:06.319
suggestions
0:56:03.920,0:56:08.559
so hopefully if you are experiencing
0:56:06.319,0:56:09.520
burnout you do get out of it as quickly
0:56:08.559,0:56:12.799
as possible
0:56:09.520,0:56:16.000

0:58:02.480,0:58:05.920
very good we’re gonna have to record

that so that you can plug all the other
0:58:05.920,0:58:10.079

so we’re gonna have to we’re gonna have
0:58:11.520,0:58:14.480
