  • ABC is rounding out its pilot orders with the addition of a new pilot order from longtime ABC collaborators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis. Horowitz and Kitsis are responsible for Disney’s hit show Once Upon A Time, and according to The Hollywood Reporter the OUAT creators have been tapped to develop a new fairy tale anthology called Epic.
  • Like OUAT, Epic will follow the same recipe, incorporating other Disney characters to present a reinvented and reimagined world for them to inhabit.
  • Disney’s massive cast of characters from across all of its properties will give Horowitz and Kitsis an endless supply of new stories to explore. (Remember – Leia and Shuri are both Disney princesses!)
  • Kitsis and Horowitz have had an overall deal with ABC that was renewed in 2018. Now that Shonda Rhimes is working with Netflix, they are at the top of ABC’s stable of showrunners. In addition to developing OUAT, they also worked on Lost and were the minds behind Apple’s brilliant Amazing Stories.
  • Once Upon a Time was centered in fairy tale mythology, borrowing heavily from Disney’s stable of fairy tale characters to create a world where Snow White and Prince Charming’s daughter had been sent to the real world so she would be safe.
  • Epic could use the same formula to bridge the gap between fantasy and reality, or it could remain rooted in fantasy to take more of a deep dive into worldbuilding with beloved characters. It’s not often that creators have so much latitude to work with established characters, but as Once Upon a Time fans know, Horowitz and Kitsis know how to manage a sprawling cast and make their stories make sense.
  • As it stands, ABC has ordered four pilots for consideration for the fall television season. Naturally, COVID-19 has continued to play a big role in making decisions about new shows, as safety protocols and the ability to film safely now factor into a new show’s viability.

  • Some Disney fans will finally have the chance to return to the California Adventure Park next month for a limited-time experience, about a year after the entertainment giant’s theme parks closed because of the pandemic.
  • Disneyland Resort President Ken Potrock announced the plan Monday in a letter to workers sent in honor of California Adventure’s 20th anniversary.
  • Disney (DIS) is not yet permitted by the state to fully reopen all of the park’s attractions, so the event won’t be like typical visits to a theme park. Instead, the park will offer guests food and beverages, merchandise and “carefully crafted entertainment experiences,” Potrock said in the letter, which was reviewed by CNN Business.
  • With this initiative — as well as the recent restart of outdoor dining in Downtown Disney after California’s stay-at-home order was lifted last month — around 1,000 Disney cast members will be able to return to work. Tens of thousands of the company’s workers have been furloughed or laid off since last year because of the prolonged closure.
  • “With limited capacity and enhanced health and safety measures in place, Guests once again will get to step into a magical Disney environment — an environment that will provide memorable and fun experiences our guests are craving,” Potrock said.
  • The ticketed events are expected to take place multiple days a week beginning in mid-March. The limited reopening points to the potential beginning of a recovery for Disney’s California theme park operations after the pandemic hammered the company’s bottom line.
  • Disney closed all 12 of its theme parks around the world last spring as the Covid-19 pandemic spread. While some of its resorts, such as Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, have reopened, the California parks remain closed because of state health and safety protocols. The Anaheim, California, resort is Disney’s oldest location, with Disneyland opening in 1955 (California Adventure Park opened in 2001).
  • Disneyland’s unions have pushed California Governor Gavin Newsom to reopen the parks, which is set to happen at a limited capacity only when Orange County reaches a lower level of Covid-19 cases. A group of California state assembly members also proposed a bill aimed at speeding the reopening of Disneyland and other large theme parks in the state.
  • Potrock called the California Adventure Park limited reopening a “very special opportunity … that speaks to our top priorities: getting more Cast Members back to work and engaging with our guests in different and relevant ways.”

  • Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi will see its titular hero face off against Darth Vader, and depending how it happens that rematch could break a Star Wars record. The upcoming show will take place 10 years after Star Wars: Episode III – A Revenge of the Sith, where, after defeating Anakin Skywalker on Mustafar, Obi-Wan Kenobi went into exile on Tatooine, committing to watching over Anakin and Padmé Amidala’s son, Luke. As far as viewers know, Obi-Wan spent the entire time on the desert planet, but that may change in the show, not least because of a promised rematch with Darth Vader.
  • As well as Ewan McGregor, Hayden Christensen is also returning for Obi-Wan Kenobi, where he will don the Vader suit and helmet for the first time since Revenge of the Sith. The specifics of his role are unknown, but the fact he’s been announced so far in advance suggests it’ll be fairly involved. One thing that has been confirmed is that there will be a “rematch” between Obi-Wan and Vader, which was teased by Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy at the Disney Investor Day back in December 2020. Concept art seemingly confirmed it will indeed be a lightsaber battle, showing the pair crossing laser swords once more, and if that is indeed the case, then it will break a Star Wars record.
  • So far, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader have had two duels in Star Wars movies: their fateful fight on Mustafar, and then the rematch in the original Star Wars, which saw Vader strike down his former master. Vader has also battled Luke Skywalker in two different movies – The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi – while, in the sequel trilogy, Rey and Kylo Ren have had three lightsaber duels in total, but only in two separate movies, with their first clash in Star Wars: The Force Awakens followed by a pair of fights in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. With Obi-Wan and Vader’s rematch a lightsaber duel of some sort – even if it’s carried out via the Force, like Rey and Kylo’s second fight – then this would be the first trilogy of lightsaber battles across three different live-action Star Wars properties.
  • Even when factoring animation into the equation, the fact that Obi-Wan and Darth Vader will be making their rivalry into a trilogy remains an impressive feat, although not a wholly unique one, and indeed both characters factor heavily into looking at who has had the most duels on-screen. Following on from Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Obi-Wan fights Maul several times in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, before their final encounter in Star Wars Rebels. Likewise, between their clashes in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, Anakin duels Count Dooku a number of times in The Clone Wars.
  • In both cases, though, there are some extra caveats, with most of those duels not being the sort of direct one-on-one battles like the live-action fights seen with Obi-Wan and Vader or Vader and Luke. Obi-Wan is heavily involved in most battles with Dooku, while his fights with Maul tend to be against him and his brother, Savage Opress. He fights the duo with Asajj Ventress (The Clone Wars season 4, episode 22, “Revenge”) and Adi Gallia (season 5, episode 1, “Revival”), and later in the show is lured into a trap by Maul, barely even igniting his lightsaber in season 5, episode 16, “The Lawless” before being captured.
  • The rematch between the duo in Obi-Wan Kenobi, then, can give viewers a “true” Star Wars lightsaber trilogy, akin to fabled real world trilogies such as Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier trio of boxing matches. Adding to its epic feel is that this is one that spans across 19 years and three different movies/shows and features the direct, one-vs-one battles that so often make for the saga’s greatest, most memorable duels. It makes sense that such a record would fall to these two characters: after all, they had the very first lightsaber battle in Star Wars, opening up the original trilogy, and the very last of the prequels. As two characters whose relationship and respective journeys defines so much of Star Wars, then as Disney continues to head into its new era, focused more on Disney+ shows than movies, it’s only right another Obi-Wan/Vader fight would be a part of it.

  • Gina Carano, who is best known for playing Cara Dune on the first two seasons of Disney+’s Star Wars: The Mandalorian, will reportedly no longer be part of the franchise’s future. The news was confirmed on Wednesday night in a statement from a Lucasfilm spokesperson, revealing that Carano is not expected to return to the series’ future seasons, or to any other future projects in the franchise. This comes after Carano shared several controversial and anti-Semitic posts on her social media, the backlash off which led to the hashtag #FireGinaCarano trending on Twitter on Wednesday.
  • “Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future,” the statement from Lucasfilm reads. “Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”
  • While Carano has had a history of making controversial posts on social media — including expressing transphobic views and denying the validity of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic — her posts in recent days caught quite a lot of attention. This included an anti-Semitic post comparing the current political climate to Nazi Germany.
  • Carano’s Cara Dune first made her appearance in The Mandalorian Season 1 episode “Sanctuary”, and grew into a fan-favorite across the first season. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lucasfilm had even had aimed to unveil Carano as the star of her own Star Wars spinoff during last December’s Disney Investor Day presentation, but those plans were done away with following her previous social media behavior. While it was never confirmed, many had speculated that she could be at the center of the Rangers of the New Republic spinoff series, which was announced during Disney Investor Day but did not have confirmation of a cast or roster of characters.
  • “They have been looking for a reason to fire her for two months, and today was the final straw,” a source says in the report.

  • Tony Bennett has revealed he has Alzheimer’s disease.
  • In an interview with AARP, the singer, 94, said he was first diagnosed in 2016. According to the story, he has not yet experienced common symptoms like disorientation or episodes of terror, rage or depression, “but there was little doubt that the disease had progressed.”
  • Gayatri Devi, M.D., a neurologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, who diagnosed Bennett, said the singer has some “cognitive issues, but multiple other areas of his brain are still resilient and functioning well.”
  • Devi continued, “He is doing so many things, at 94, that many people without dementia cannot do. He really is the symbol of hope for someone with a cognitive disorder.”
  • In a tweet sharing the story, Bennett thanked the magazine and his family for their support.
  • “Life is a gift – even with Alzheimer’s,” he wrote. “Thank you to Susan and my family for their support, and @AARP The Magazine for telling my story.”
  • Bennett’s wife Susan Crow and eldest son Danny were also part of the interview.
  • Danny said he checked in with Lady Gaga, one of his father’s collaborators, about breaking the silence around his diagnosis.
  • “I wanted to check with her to make sure she was cool,” Danny said. “because she watches his back all the time. She was like, ‘Absolutely, it’s just another gift that he can give to the world.'”
  • Crow explained that there have been challenges.
  • “I have my moments and it gets very difficult,” she said. “It’s no fun arguing with someone who doesn’t understand you… But I feel badly talking about it because we are so much more fortunate than so many people with this diagnosis. We have such a good team. Danny handles Tony’s business affairs. We have great doctors.”
  • The story also revealed that Bennett and Gaga have a new album coming out, following their 2014 album “Cheek to Cheek.” The album, which the story says was recorded between 2018 and early 2020, is set for a spring release.
  • According to Crow, Bennett was already showing clear signs of the disease throughout the recording process, but spoke to what music means to him.
  • “Singing is everything to him,” Crow said. “Everything. It has saved his life many times. Many times. Through divorces and things. If he ever stops singing, that’s when we’ll know.”
  • Crow added that though Bennett is fortunate, he’s still not the same as before.
  • “There’s a lot about him that I miss,” she said. “Because he’s not the old Tony anymore… But when he sings, he’s the old Tony.”

  • Jeffrey Dean Morgan says he’s “counting on” reuniting with his Supernatural alums Jensen Ackles and Eric Kripke in The Boys, where Ackles joins the upcoming third season as Soldier Boy. Last January, Kripke offered Morgan a Season 3 role over Twitter when Morgan tweeted love for the TV-MA-rated superhero satire and said he’d “go play with that gang anytime.” Morgan added he’d suit up for The Boys “in a heartbeat,” and by July, Kripke revealed ongoing talks with the Walking Dead star for an undisclosed role. Weeks later, Kripke cautioned fans that limited availability and the coronavirus pandemic might make Morgan’s Boys role one of the “many things COVID is screwing up in this world.”
  • Asked on Twitter Saturday if he’s still up for joining The Boys, Morgan tweeted, “Counting on it. @therealKripke ya hear me?” In a subsequent tweet, Morgan wrote he’s “super excited” for his Supernatural son and added Ackles is “gonna kill it” as the original superhero Soldier Boy.
  • “I absolutely have [talked to Morgan]. There’s one role we’re already talking about,” Kripke told Collider over the summer, adding both camps have to “coordinate” because of Morgan’s starring role as Negan on The Walking Dead.
  • “He’s on The Walking Dead, so he has another home. But we already talked about one role, and there might be a potential other that we’re talking about,” Kripke said. “But we are [talking], just this past week we were literally texting back and forth about trying to figure out how to get him on the show. I don’t think it’s a done deal yet, but the will is there, and we’re both talking about it.”
  • Asked about Morgan’s potential role in an August update, Kripke pointed out that COVID-19 “could really screw that up.”
  • “He is on The Walking Dead, so he can only come up for a couple of days. If there’s still a two-week quarantine between Canada and the United States, that renders that impossible,” he told Games Radar. “Of the many things COVID is screwing up in this world, a Jeffrey Dean Morgan cameo or a Jeffrey Dean Morgan role may be one of them. But if the quarantine is removed and a couple of things break our way? Then yeah, we’ll try to figure it out.”
  • Last week, star Karl Urban revealed he was en route to Toronto to begin filming “in a highly tested, PPE, zone controlled, socially distanced way.”
  • “I think, because of COVID and because we’re shooting in the winter which is going to be a little difficult, it limits us to interiors, initially. So it’s a very staggered intake of cast to the shooting schedule this season,” Homelander actor Antony Starr told ComicBook.com in January. “I’ll head up soon. Honestly, I’m chomping at the bit to get back into it, but there’s just a lot of new regulations. It’s a whole new world with COVID that we have to adhere to a bunch of new regulations, so very soon. Can’t be soon enough.”
  • Morgan recently wrapped a six-week shoot on the extended Season 10 of The Walking Dead. The pandemic-proofed Georgia set of the zombie drama resumed production in October after spending most of 2020 shuttered by the virus, and The Walking Dead returns to life with six new episodes on Sunday, February 28, on AMC.

  • WandaVision is a blend of classic television and the Marvel Cinematic Universe in which Wanda Maximoff and Vision – two super powered beings living idealized suburban lives – begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems.
  • I had wanted to feature this a few weeks ago. But to be perfectly honest, it had me scratching my head for the first three episodes deciding if it was worth recommending to our audience.
  • The premise of the show was couched in nostalgic TV sitcoms and there seemed to be no rhyme or reason behind it
  • By episode 4 some clarity starts to creep into the series and it began to emerge as the Marvel Universe we know and love.
  • Each episode is loaded with easter eggs if you are careful enough to notice them. Some related to the Marvel Cinematic universe, some related to the original comics but almost all of them play a significant part in telling the story.
  • The show brings several tertiary characters together from other Marvel projects in kind of a B team style non-super powered avengers mash up
  • We even had a cameo appearance by our in studio model mixer the Rodecaster pro that I had a chance to geek out over
