      • The Walt Disney Studios has set Oscar winner Barry Jenkins to direct the studio’s follow-up to the 2019 blockbuster The Lion King. Jeff Nathanson, who scripted the last installment, is back in the fold and has completed an initial draft of script. 
      • The film will continue with the photo-realistic technology that director Jon Favreau used in the 2019 film and 2016’s The Jungle Book. There is no release date set for The Lion King follow-up or for the production start, but it is understandably a top priority for Sean Bailey’s division after the last film grossed $1.6 billion worldwide.
      • They are keeping the logline under wraps, but I’m told that the story will further explore the mythology of the characters, including Mufasa’s origin story. Moving the story forward while looking back conjures memories of The Godfather: Part II, set on the African plain with a continuation of the tradition of music that was a key part of the 1994 animated classic, the 2019 film and the blockbuster Broadway stage transfer.
      • Along with 2019’s The Lion King, Nathanson’s credits on the blockbuster track include Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Catch Me If You Can, and Rush Hour 2 and Rush Hour 3.

      • A decades-long mainstay at Walt Disney World is coming to an end. The Grand Floridian Society Orchestra is playing its last shows this week.
      • The group was furloughed at the start of the pandemic, but petitions, signed by thousands, have been circulating online in the hopes of keeping them around.
      • We spoke to Corey Paul, who has been playing in the orchestra part time for years.
      • “As a trombonist, there’s only so many types of gigs you can get. A gig where you’re inside playing jazz, that’s kind of the dream,” Paul said.
      • The group announcing on Facebook that “As of October 3rd, 2020, our days at WDW will come to an end.”
      • “A lot of the people’s reasons to stay at The Grand Floridian was that band. Since COVID-19 began, Disney shut down and then when everything started to come back a little bit, they rebranded it as ‘The Disney Society Orchestra,’ and put them at Hollywood Studios as a stage show. Really cute show if you haven’t seen it,” Paul said.
      • From that point on, the group explained they were playing shows and then got notice that the “theater is going dark,” facing their last day of work.
      • They have been together for 32 years.
      • “As much of a bummer as it is to see that band go, anyone will tell you a 32-year run, that’s a long run for any group. That’s incredible,” Paul said.
      • A member of the group told us they hope to play at Disney again one day.
      • In an uncertain future, they have left some great memories for those who have heard their music.
      • The orchestra said, “We’ll never forget you and how wonderful you’ve made us feel. We will miss you! Thank you, thank you, thank you.”
        • Another Resort Favorite, YeHaa Bob Jackson, had been a regular fixture at Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside for 23 years… during the shut down he’d been doing a weekly DIsney Sing a long on Facebook.

    • Disney is laying off 28,000 employees as pandemic hammers its theme parks

      • Disney is laying off 28,000 people in the United States as the coronavirus pandemic hammers its parks and resorts business.
      • The cuts will affect the Disney’s Parks, Experiences and Products unit. The company said 67% of the employees laid off will be part-time workers.
      • Disney’s parks and resorts division has more than 100,000 US employees.
      • Disney’s theme parks shut down globally this spring as the pandemic hit, dealing a huge blow to the company’s bottom line. The company’s profit dropped a whopping 91% during the first three months of 2020.
      • Josh D’Amaro, the chairman of Disney (DIS) Parks, said the staffing cuts were necessary because of the “prolonged impact” of coronavirus on business. That included “limited capacity due to physical distancing requirements and the continued uncertainty regarding the duration of the pandemic.”
      • “As difficult as this decision is today, we believe that the steps we are taking will enable us to emerge a more effective and efficient operation when we return to normal,” D’Amaro said in a statement.
      • D’Amaro added that Disney’s employees have always “been key to our success, playing a valued and important role in delivering a world-class experience.”
      • “We look forward to providing opportunities where we can for them to return,” he said.
      • D’Amaro also placed partial blame on the state of California for its “unwillingness to lift restrictions that would allow Disneyland to reopen.” Disneyland and California Adventure, the company’s flagship resorts in California, have been closed since March.
      • The California governor’s office did not immediately respond to request for comment.
      • Disney originally planned to reopen the resort located in Anaheim, California, on July 17, but that reopening was delayed indefinitely.
      • Disney World, the company’s resort in Florida, closed its doors in March as well, but it began a phased reopening for its parks in July. The resort reopened with with safety protocols and health measures that included reduced capacity at its parks and requiring all employees and guests to wear masks.
      • Disney notified its employees in April that because of coronavirus it would furlough employees “whose jobs aren’t necessary at this time” starting on April 19.
      • “As you can imagine, a decision of this magnitude is not easy,” D’Amaro wrote in a memo to employees that was obtained by CNN Business. “We’ve cut expenses, suspended capital projects, furloughed our cast members while still paying benefits, and modified our operations to run as efficiently as possible, however, we simply cannot responsibly stay fully staffed while operating at such limited capacity.”
      • Disney has been hobbled by the coronavirus pandemic in many ways, but its theme parks and resort business has arguably taken the biggest hit of all.
      • Disney’s parks unit, which brought in more than $26 billion in fiscal 2019, was crushed during the second quarter of this year. The segment’s operating profit fell 58% compared with the previous year, and Disney reported a loss a billion dollars in profit just a few weeks into the global health crisis.

      • Star Wars: Squadrons has arrived, debuting on consoles and PC. Starting today, the new video game will put you at the controls inside the cockpit of an X-wing (or a TIE fighter if you’re an Imperial at heart) for a first-person dogfighting experience and original storyline set after the events of Star Wars: Return of Jedi.
      • Who are the daring pilots taking to the skies and the stars during the final days of the Galactic Empire? Learn all about some of the main characters, gorgeous ships, and other new details in the official StarWars.com Databank entries for the game.
      • Fighting for the New Republic as part of Vanguard Squadron — an elite response unit whose motto is “Fearless to the finish” — we’ll meet combat pilot Lindon Javes. There also squad members: Grace Sienar, a hero of the Rebellion who chose the side of the righteous after being raised in the lap of Imperial luxury; Kierah “Gunny” Koovah, a survivor who lost an arm in the Clone Wars and survived imprisonment by the enemy to continue the fight long after the fall of the Empire; the Trandoshan pilot Feresk “Frisk” Tssat, and Keo Venzee, who found fame and fortune on the galactic racing circuit before turning those talents into assets of the New Republic.
      • Keeping Vanguard Squadron flying high, you’ll find the New Republic’s intelligence chief, Ardo Barodai, a handsome Mon Calamari who knows how to play dumb to get the intel he needs, and dedicated and skilled maintenance crew member Zerelda Sage.
      • But Imperial remnants remain organized and intent on bringing down the New Republic. Among those fighters we find Titan Squadron, led by Terisa Kerrill. Like many loyal Imperial soldiers, Terisa credits the Empire for giving her purpose in life. Among her fearless crew are Havina Vonreg, who lost her brothers in a rebel attack and won’t rest until she has revenge; Rella Sol, an ambitious strategist with family in the Imperial Senate; and the mysterious Shen.
      • Titan Squadron is led by Admiral Rae Sloane, a decorated veteran in her own right with a vision for the Empire’s future, and aided by the rank-and-file including LT-514, an Imperial Information Officer enhanced with a cybernetic implant, and Willard Waylin, who only needs the right wrench in hand to keep the Star Destroyer Overseer going strong.
      • Players will also see an array of new ships in the Rebel Alliance and Imperial fleets, including the Temperance, the Overseer, and the Starhawk.

  • CASSIAN ANDOR GETS A NEW DIRECTION

    • Tony Gilroy is known to be the man who saved Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. 
    • Gareth Edwards, the director of that film, delivered a great first pass, but it was the reshoots that Tony Gilroy wrote and filmed that secured Rogue One a place as one of the best Star Wars films of all time. 
    • It was no surprise, then, that Gilroy was tapped to be the man who brought the prequel show starring Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) to life for Disney+.
    • Naturally, the global pandemic has caused delays for production, which had originally been scheduled to begin shooting already.
    • Deadline is now reporting that there’s one more change because of the pandemic: Tony Gilroy will no longer be directing the first three episodes of the series, thanks to COVID-related travel restrictions.
      Reportedly, Gilroy is going to remain on as showrunner and executive producer, but he will be stepping aside from directing duties to allow Toby Haynes to step in. 
    • Haynes directed the Star Trek meets Twilight Zone episode of Black Mirror, “U.S.S. Callister,” and had the benefit of already being in the U.K., where the untitled Cassian show will film.
    • There’s no official word on when the Cassian Andor show will start shooting and there’s no revised release schedule for it. 
    • Will we see it in 2021? 2022? At this point, who knows? 
  • THE MANDALORIAN RUMORS

    • Did Pedro Pascal leave The Mandalorian?
    • This is a question we’ve covered rumors of over the past few weeks. 
    • New opinions on the subject have surfaced from Syfy.com that suggest there’s really nothing to them.
    • The rumors began when YouTuber Grace Randolph (who has had a history of reporting fake stories) broke the “news” in her reaction video to the new trailer for The Mandalorian. 
    • In it, she claims that leading actor Pedro Pascal walked off The Mandalorian midseason over concerns that he wasn’t getting to act with his helmet off enough. 
    • This doesn’t pass the smell test on a lot of levels. 
    • Aside from Pascal’s delight in interviews for the first season about learning how to act with the mask on, the second season had begun shooting well before the first season even premiered and finished before the COVID-19 lockdown. 
    • And then you have Lucasfilm mainstay Phil Szostak tweeting just last month that he was on set in the final month of shooting and he was able to interact with Pascal.
    • Then, when you add to that this People interview from Giancarlo Esposito (Moff Gideon) saying that they’re laying the groundwork for seasons three and four, it makes it hard to imagine that the lead character would just walk away.
    • For now, take these rumors with hefty grains of salt and wait to see how The Mandalorian unfolds for yourself. 
    • Season 2 premieres on Oct. 30 on Disney+.

      • The second season of Cobra Kai left things up in the air for some of its characters, as the two schools found themselves in all out brawl. In the end, despite showing mercy to his opponent, Xolo Maridueña’s Miguel is left in the hospital ICU after being kicked off a higher level and landing on his back. Not only that but William Zabka’s Johnny has lost control of Cobra Kai and a hint of a character from his past was teased. So what’s in store for the next season? Zabka took to Twitter with a special teaser, which may not spell good news for Miguel in the new episodes. Check it out for yourself below!
      • “Nothing is as it seems, I can tell you that,” Zabka told ComicBook.com earlier this month in an exclusive interview about the new season. “Listen, for the character of Johnny, Ali, I’ve been saying this for the last two seasons, she’s a big missing piece of his life. She’s the love that got away and, in some form, would love to reconnect. But the show is full of surprises.”
      • He continued, “The end of season two is a car wreck essentially. There’s a lot of pieces to put back together. There’s a lot of healing that has to happen. There’s a lot of growing that needs to happen. I’ve seen a lot of fan theories out there and heard a lot of fan theories. Nice tries. It’s awesome. I mean, season three is fireworks. And I think it’s season one and two combined on steroids. And it was a blast to shoot, and it’s going to be worth the wait. It’s hard. We were hoping it would be out before now, but the world is what it is right now, and we’re so happy to be at a great home like Netflix. And for our fans that have already seen the show to watch it and watch it again, and the new fans to come on board. There’s a lot of work to get season three ready. It’s getting translated for 30 countries and all that stuff.”

    • Exclusive: The Orville Isn’t Cancelled, Seth MacFarlane Is Quitting On It

      • Recently rumors have been swirling that The Orville may be cancelled, and we’ve exclusively uncovered the reason why: Seth MacFarlane just doesn’t want to make it anymore.
      • Contrary to what some outlets have reported, that Hulu doesn’t want more of the show past season 3, the truth according to our source is that Hulu would love to have more of the show but they can’t convince Seth MacFarlane to sign another deal. 
      • In the email sent to us by our source they explain, “Seth keeps telling them he’s ready to move on to other things and he thinks he’s done enough. He’s been pitching the idea of killing off his character and handing the show over to someone else to run but Hulu does not want more of The Orville if Seth MacFarlane isn’t a part of it.”
      • Apparently the battle over whether or not to kill off Seth MacFarlane’s Ed Mercer character is also a part of why it’s taking so long to get The Orville season 3 done. Seth wants to kill off Ed Mercer in The Orville season 3 finale, and Hulu doesn’t want him to, because they still hope they can convince MacFarlane to come back for The Orville season 4.
      • Earlier this week when MacFarlane was asked in an Instagram Live if The Orville was being cancelled, he was evasive. The non-answer he gave was, “There has been a lot of speculation online: Will the show come back? The show is still a huge priority for me and for the cast and everyone else. We do have a season to finish, and we are going to finish it.” Those aren’t exactly the words of a man who sees himself doing a lot more of his show. Instead it sounds like someone who’s trying to wrap things up so he can move on. 
      • Meanwhile, Seth MacFarlane is already busy signing up to work on other projects which are not The Orville.  He’s working on the series Skywatch for the new Peacock streaming service. Skywatch is set in a future world where delivery drones are ubiquitous and also turning evil and attacking people.
      • Seth is also working on a limited series called The Winds of War for NBC.  It’s an adaptation of a book by Herman Wouk. It’s a deadly serious, fictional telling of World War II.
      • Actually both of those future projects Seth is working on are deadly serious, without a trace of comedy, humor, or lightness to them. That’s a sure hint to where MacFarlane’s at, it seems he’s trying to leave comedy behind him. Even though The Orville has become more serious as it goes on, the show will always be lighter in tone than what it seems Seth MacFarlane is currently interested in.
      • Being the creator and executive producer of The Orville has helped give MacFarlane a launching pad into the world of live-action TV where he’s now in-demand and networks are offering him lucrative deals. If he stays with The Orville he’ll miss his window to do even bigger projects elsewhere. Given that, getting MacFarlane to focus on The Orville season 3 is hard enough. Convincing him to return for The Orville season 4 may be nearly impossible, no matter how much Hulu wants it.
