    • Disneyland Resort has been almost entirely closed for more than six months now. Only the Downtown Disney district is currently open to guests, and even that is only available to a limited number of guests due to capacity restrictions. Disney has lost millions upon millions of dollars in tickets, food, and merchandise sales due to being closed, and so you can certainly understand any decision that the resort makes to try to bolster what business is currently being done. To that end, Disney has found a new spot to sell merchandise that has previously been exclusive to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. This is great news for those that can’t visit the theme park, but bad news if you’re a fan of great Disney art because the location chosen for the pop-up merch stand is Downtown Disney’s WonderGround Gallery.
    • WonderGround Gallery has previously been the home of Disney themed art made by independent artists. The art is there to enjoy if you just want to look, but of course, it’s always there for purchase as well if you see something you like. 
    • Several theme park related media sites, including Touring Plans revealed that all the Disney art has been taken off the walls of Wonderground Gallery, and in its place is merchandise that was previously exclusive to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Because of the design of Galaxy’s Edge, and the attempt at full immersion that Batuu tries to create, the merchandise for sale there isn’t available in any gift shops outside of Galaxy’s Edge. The idea is that everything you can buy there is from an artisan who lives on Batuu, However, it seems that under the circumstances, exceptions are being made.
    • It’s not too hard to understand why this change was made. With Disneyland closed nobody can buy Galaxy’s Edge merchandise and there are certain to be a lot of people who would do just that if they could. And since WonderGround’s stock-in-trade is art, which is frequently not cheap, the income per square foot of WonderGround was probably on the low side compared to most other Downtown Disney locations.
    • This is almost certainly a temporary situation. Once Disneyland is able to reopen then the normal Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge merchandise locations will also be available, and the WonderGround Gallery can go back to being an art gallery. The transition away from being the gallery happened overnight, and so hopefully the shift back can be just as quick. This is just one more reason that day can’t come soon enough.

    • Though it lacks the flash and innovation of many Disney Parks rides, many agree that Fantasyland’s King Arthur Carrousel is a vital part of Disneyland and its history. As the story goes, Walt Disney came up with the idea of building what would eventually become Disneyland while sitting on a bench watching his daughters riding the Merry-Go-Round at Griffith Park in Los Angeles. He wanted to create a park that both children and adults could enjoy together.
    • Disneyland’s King Arthur Carrousel was originally made by a company in Canada and then shipped to California in 1954. Disney’s Imagineers had to do major refurbishments to the ride to meet Walt’s vision, eventually replacing all of the animals on it, which included zebras, giraffes, and lions. Of the 72 galloping horses that ended up on the carousel on opening day, only one was painted white. By 1975, all the other brown, gray, and tan colored horses were repainted white with different color schemes. All of the horses were also then given names. To this day, you can still head to City Hall on Main Street and get a copy of all of their names.
    • Walt‘s favorite horse, however, was named Jingles. As the Lead Horse, she’s located on the outer row of the carousel and was named after all the jingle bells that decorate her saddle. After going through a number of refreshes over the years, Jingles was given a more luxurious makeover in 2008 getting accented with gold leaf paint and given Mary Poppins theming after being dedicated to the film’s lead, Julie Andrews.
    • Special elements to look for on the horse are the image of a flying Mary Poppins, the initials JA (for Julie Andrews), and the character’s umbrella on the saddle blanket of the horse. There’s also a Hidden Mickey comprised of three jewels to be found.
    • So the next time you make a mad dash to one of the newer more exciting rides at Disneyland, make some time to enjoy King Arthur Carrousel. And remember to give Jingles a little love as a tribute to Walt and his dream of creating a place for all to enjoy.

    • The first ever virtual 2020 Emmys Awards is set for this weekend, but as is tradition, a few statues have already been handed out. The Creative Arts Emmys, which honor the costumers, production designers, visual effects artists, makeup and hair stylists, and other craftspeople who bring television to life, took place on Wednesday night. One of the big winners was The Mandalorian, thanks in no small part to the wonder of “Baby Yoda.”
    • Competing against Netflix’s Lost in Space and Stranger Things, along with HBO’s Watchmen and Westworld, the first major Disney Plus series took home the award for Outstanding Special Visual Effects, specifically for work accomplished in episode 2, “The Child.” The award went to a number of the show’s visual effects artists, including VFX supervisors Richard Bluff, Jason Porter, and Hayden Jones, VFX producer Abbigail Keller, animation supervisor Hal Hickel, special effects supervisor Roy Cancino, supervisor John Rosengrant, environment supervisor Enrico Damm, and virtual production visualization supervisor Landis Fields. The effects in The Mandalorian stretch from those tiny details with the Child all the way to the backdrops — many of which were designed using the Unreal engine.
    • Along with the visual effects award, The Mandalorian also received accolades for Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Program (Half-Hour) for “Chapter 1: The Mandalorian”; Outstanding Sound Editing for a Comedy or Drama Series (Half-Hour) or Animation for “Chapter 1: The Mandalorian”; Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Comedy or Drama Series (Half-Hour) or Animation for “Chapter 2: The Child”; and Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series (Half-Hour) for “Chapter 7: The Reckoning.”
    • The other networks didn’t go empty-handed: HBO picked up five Creative Arts Emmys between Watchmen and Succession, while Netflix came out on top with wins for Stranger Things, The Crown, and The Ranch. A full list of winners is available on the Emmys website.
    • The Mandalorian may not be done charting the awards path just yet: The series is set to compete for Outstanding Drama when the traditional Emmys ceremony airs on Sunday, Sept. 20. The second season of the series will premiere on Oct. 30.
  • The Mandalorian Star Reportedly Quit The Show Halfway Through Season 2

    • After months of radio silence, the promotional campaign for The Mandalorian has kicked up several gears over the last couple of weeks. The premiere date was revealed along with a new logo – then a batch of official images arrived, and the set was completed with the debut of the first trailer earlier this week.
    • From the outside looking in, everything seems to be pretty rosy surrounding Mando and Baby Yoda’s latest adventure, but there’ve been murmurings of behind the scenes discontent bubbling just below the surface for a while. It was rumored a few weeks back that the show had encountered some pretty serious problems and now, insider Grace Randolph has claimed that leading man Pedro Pascal left the production halfway through shooting.
    • According to her, Pascal had numerous disagreements with the creative team and went to the studio behind their backs to plead his case, which allegedly resulted in the former Game of Thrones star being given his marching orders.
    • “While filming Season 2 Pedro Pascal really wanted to have some scenes with his helmet off,” says Randolph. “The Mandalorian creative team wouldn’t budge on this. So Pedro Pascal, from what I’ve heard from two sources now, was frustrated about this and also was pretty darn uncomfortable in the Mando suit on set. So, he became difficult.
    • And the final straw, even though he was difficult to be around on set, the final straw was that he went to Lucasfilm, from what I’ve heard from my sources, to try and get them to intervene on his behalf. And you combine that with Lucasfilm already trying to get involved with story aspects of Season 2, which I’ve also heard. Including focusing more on standalone episodes rather than making them more connected, which I’ve heard The Mandalorian creative team wanted to do, which was kind of happening at the end of Season 1. So, when Pedro Pascal went to Lucasfilm, the Mando team was like, ‘You know what, you should just go’. And Pedro Pascal did. And that happened halfway through filming. Now, as I said, I’ve heard the break up was pretty bad with both sides upset.”
    • Randolph usually has a decent track record when it comes to the inside scoop on major franchise projects, but this one seems a little far-fetched. After all, Pascal surely would have known full well when he was first in talks to join The Mandalorian that he’d be required to keep his helmet on for the majority of his scenes, something he didn’t seem to have an issue with the last time out.
    • If it does turn out to be true, though, and Jon Favreau is keeping it under wraps, that could explain why season 2 is set to widen the scope to focus on other characters and subplots. Also, no offense to Pedro Pascal, but it wouldn’t be too difficult to replace him on The Mandalorian given that you could essentially have anyone under the costume and then hire a soundalike to do a voice-over in post production.

  • Avengers: Endgame set up arrival of next Marvel villain without anybody realising

    • Marvel is about to introduce what could be its most pivotal – and fearsome – character yet.
    • With the Infinity Saga officially over following 2019 blockbuster Avengers: Endgame, fans are patiently waiting for the next era of Marvel films, so they can see what surprises studio president Kevin Feige has in store.
    • Recent reports have claimed that the forthcoming third Ant-Man film will introduce a character named Kang the Conqueror, who will be played by Jonathan Majors.
    • Those unfamiliar with the comics may be interested to know that Kang is actually one of the most powerful and important villains to have ever been created by Marvel.
    • His addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), while rumoured for some time, comes as a surprise considering it possibly reveals the direction the film series will be going in once it returns.
    • Essentially, Kang is a time-hopping antagonist who will no doubt appear as a consequence of the Avengers’ creation of alternate timelines in Endgame.
    • His character’s power comes from the fact he can manipulate the course of history by freely moving through time. 
    • It’s possible that the actions of Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr) and Captain America (Chris Evans) will open a window for Kang’s introduction.
    • Most importantly, Kang features in several character’s storylines, making him the natural successor to Thanos (Josh Brolin) as the MCU’s main villain.
    • In news that will serve as the most exciting for fans, Kang is primarily a character from the Fantastic Four comics, meaning that his introduction could set up their arrival.
    • His ties to other factions also hints that Marvel could introduce the X-Men into the fold sooner than expected, as well as a young version of the Avengers, which includes Ant-Man’s daughter, Cassie.
    • Backing up this is the fact that Kang’s ability to manipulate the course of history means he comes in different incarnations. 
    • One such version is Iron Lad, who just happens to be leader of the young Avengers. Another version is Loki (Tom Hiddleston), who will be fronting his own TV show for Disney+ in 2021.
    • It sounds likely that Kang is also going to cause havoc for characters including Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Spider-Man (Tom Holland).
  • Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade 2020 Will Not Be Live Event, De Blasio Says

    • The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, as fans have come to know it, has been formally canceled for 2020, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. New York City mayor Bill de Blasio made the announcement on Monday, saying that instead of a live event, the team behind the parade is working on something unique. “It will not be the same parade we’re used to, it will be a different kind of event,” de Blasio said during his daily briefing, per WCBS.
    • The NYC mayor added, “They’re reinventing the event for this moment in history and you will be able to feel the spirit and the joy of that day on television, online, not a live parade but something that will really give us that warmth and that great feeling we have on Thanksgiving Day.” In a statement on its website, Macy’s also addressed the live parade cancellation. “For more than 90 years, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has kicked off the holiday season with its signature entertainment spectacle, making it one of the world’s most beloved events,” the statement read. “Following our successful, safe and innovative production of Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks, it is our intention to similarly reimagine Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade this November. Stay tuned for more details later this fall.”
    • The Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade is not the only big New York City holiday event to be canceled due to COVID-19 concerns, as the Rockettes’ Radio City Christmas Spectacular has also been postponed this year. In a statement, MSG Entertainment — the owner of New York City’s Radio City Music Hall — said, “We regret that the 2020 production of the Christmas Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes presented by Chase has been canceled due to continued uncertainty associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.”
    • The company added, “We are disappointed for everyone involved with the show, as well as for the many fans who make the Christmas Spectacular a cherished part of their holiday tradition. We look forward to welcoming audiences back for the 2021 production, which is on sale now. All tickets for the 2020 production will be automatically refunded at the point of purchase.” This marks the first time in almost 90 years that the Rockettes will not take the stage at Radio City Music Hall.

        • They are some of the most advanced Audio-Animatronics created, on average each car performs 1.5 million times a year
        • Each ride vehicle will travel 36,000 miles a year

  • We talk about comic book heroes and superheroes a lot on this podcast. And while the various works of fiction that feature these characters is a source of relief, inspiration and hope for us this week we lost a real hero that embodied all of those qualities and more.
    
  • Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Champion of Gender Equality has died at the age of 87 after a long and surprisingly successful struggle with cancer.
    
  • Architect of the legal fight for women’s rights in the 1970’s, the Notorious RBG as she was affectionately called in recent years subsequently served 27 years on the nation’s highest court, becoming it’s most prominent member.
    
  • The Notorious RBG has been many things to many people in her 87 years. But most importantly she was an inspiration to women and girls everywhere that no matter how difficult it might be to stand up for yourself and the rights of others, one person can make a difference. She proved that to the world on more than one occasion.
    
  • We have lost a leader, an inspiration, a hero and an amazing woman. Hopefully the legacy that she left behind will live on through our daughter and others from her generation.
