Disney College Program returning to Walt Disney World Resort this June

Disney has today announced that the Disney College Program will be returning to the Walt Disney World Resort in June 2021.
On the official website, Disney said, “As our industry and community continue to bounce back, we have welcomed back thousands of cast members to work and have also restarted our recruitment efforts amid a tight labor market at Walt Disney World. Both of these measures are important indicators toward fully reopening our businesses and getting more people back to work. Right now, we are also ready to welcome back students and are excited to announce the relaunch of the Disney College Program this June. We are inviting participants whose program ended early or was suspended in 2020 to reapply and join us. Today, May 3, these participants will receive exclusive communication via email about this exciting opportunity.
Disney has also today commented on other programs, including the International Program, “Right now, we’re focused on bringing the Disney College Program back to Walt Disney World Resort and will have more to share about Disney International Programs, Disney Culinary Program, and those at Disneyland® Resort later.”
Disney sent its vast workforce of College Program Cast Members home on March 18 2020 as the pandemic began to impact the world. The Disney College Program, Disney Culinary Program, Disney Cultural Exchange Program and Disney Academic Exchange Program were suspended from March 16.
The temporary suspension was then extended in July 2020 to “until further notice.”
In 2020, Walt Disney World’s College Program comprised of more than 5500 Cast Members deployed to a variety of roles from attraction hosts to character performers.
The new Disney College Program participants will also be among the first to stay at the new Flamingo Crossings Village complex which was built to house Disney’s college workforce.

Disney’s real-life lightsaber looks incredible. Here’s how it could work

In a not-so-long time from now, in a theme park not so far away, you’ll get the chance to see a realistic lightsaber instantly extend out of a hilt, glowing before your very eyes. Disney has built working lightsabers that mimic the look and sound of the laser sword from the Star Wars movies, announcing Tuesday that the prop will be part of its new Star Wars-themed hotel at Walt Disney World after teasing it to a small group of reporters in a streamed video presentation last month.
The Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser hotel will open in 2022, featuring a two-day, two-night “storyliving” adventure where guests are transported aboard the Halcyon starcruiser. Guests will be immersed in lightsaber training, learn the navigation and defense systems of the spaceship, enjoy fine dining and be escorted on a field trip to the Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge area of Disney World.
The windows of the hotel will show always-changing views of the galaxy, and character interactions will include heroes of the Resistance. Guests will be able to choose alliances within the storyline, and meet with the ship’s captain and mechanic. Also included in the resort stay package is one dinner with a live performance from a Twi’lek dancer in the Crown of Corellia Dining Room. The dining room will offer breakfast and lunch daily, and a multi-course dinner menu.
But one of the focal points of your stay at the new Star Wars resort? Interacting with Rey, who will wield Disney’s new realistic lightsaber. A video of the lightsaber in action shows the shaft of light extend out of the hilt, making the same humming sounds you hear in the Star Wars onscreen universe.
The lightsaber was first announced by Disney Parks Chairman Josh D’Amaro. At the end of a video presentation in April, he picked up a hilt-like box from which a light blade shot out in one second as he said, “It’s real.” No video evidence of it was previously shared online, with reporters asked not to record the presentation. All we had to go on were stories from those who witnessed the spectacle.
Cue the shock from reporters blowing up Twitter who were taken by surprise by what they saw. (I, alas, was not one of those reporters. During the presentation I was busy covering another part of my childhood coming to life: a Transformer that transforms on its own.)
Shortly afterward, one of Disney’s top creative executives, Scott Trowbridge, tweeted that yes, it is really real.
Disney has now confirmed the lightsaber was designed by Disney Imagineering Research and Development.
So how did Disney pull off this feat of engineering? There are some clues in a patent Disney filed for a working lightsaber back in 2017. (No, it doesn’t chop off limbs, but it does have a retractable, internally illuminated blade.) In it, we see that inspiration for the design comes from a very basic tool: a tape measure. But with multiple spools of materials that need to extend and retract in an instant, the build itself is far from basic.
In the video embedded above, I show off Disney’s new footage of the lightsaber and break down the materials Disney may be using to create the effect as described in its patent — including an LED light strip. And by trying to make my own sample, I hopefully demonstrate how complicated it really is to make everything work perfectly when you don’t have the Force on your side.
You can bet an effect like this would be perfect for live entertainment at the Galaxy’s Edge themed land at Disney’s theme parks, along with the Galactic Starcruiser.
Thanks to reporter Carlye Wisel, host of the podcast Very Amusing with Carlye Wisel, for joining in to explain what she saw in the presentation. And if you’re feeling inspired to mess around with making your own lightsaber, you can find a strip of color-changing LEDs for $20 (and you can cut it to the length you want).

‘Mandalorian’ Star Gina Carano Reportedly in Talks to Return to Disney+ Series

Could Gina Carano be returning to the Star Wars universe? After Lucasfilm fired Carano in February and said “there are no plans for her” to be employed by the studio in the future over several controversial social media posts, including one that likened the experience of Jews during the Holocaust to the U.S. political climate, a new rumor suggests the powers that be are considering bringing Carano back to Disney+’s The Mandalorian.
Could Gina Carano make her return to “The Mandalorian” on Disney+? We have no idea, but there are a lot of rumors floating around that it’s going to happen.
Multiple entertainment news blogs and websites have reported that Carano and Disney have reached an agreement that will bring her back to “The Mandalorian” and the “Star Wars” franchise.
So where do the rumors come from? YouTuber Overlord DVD started the rumor, saying he had heard from two “Hollywood agents,” who said Disney is in talks with Carano about a return as Cara Dune in the “Star Wars” franchise. Per We Got This Covered, Overlord DVD “goes on to make it clear that he backs Carano in this matter, defending the controversial post that ultimately cost the actress her career.”
So far, we don’t know anything. I’ve reached out to Disney+ for comment on the rumors and have not received a response yet.
However, Carano — who was fired from Lucasfim over months of controversial social media posts — has already seen a change in her relationship with Disney+. Her episode of “Running Wild with Bear Grylls” was believed to have been cut from Disney+ before she revealed that it was coming back, as I wrote for the Deseret News.
“Want to hear something cool? Just so happens you WILL be able to see my @beargrylls episode on @natgeo after all!! Bear is a real one. I’m so glad you’re going to get to see it. My heart is so full.”
The rumor comes from YouTuber Overlord DVD. According to We Got This Covered, the YouTuber recently alleged that “Hollywood agents” informed them that Disney is currently quietly in talks with the actress about the “possibility” of her returning to not only reprise her role as former Rebel Alliance soldier Cara Dune on The Mandalorian but also in various spinoffs. The outlet notes that the claim should be taken “with a pinch of salt,” and Overlord DVD also cast some doubt, suggesting that Carano may not be willing to return even if the chance arose, stating, “Disney certainly must have offended Gina” when they fired her.
However, nobody linked to Lucasfilm has made any indication that Carano will ever return to the series, and Overlord DVD’s claims contradict those of one insider who said in April that the actress would “never return” to the Star Wars universe. According to that April report from We Got This Covered, the studio’s decision to fire the actress is final. When Lucasfilm confirmed Carano’s firing in February, they said in a statement that the actress “is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future.” The studio went on to label her social media posts “denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities” as “abhorrent and unacceptable.”
Carano starred in The Mandalorian as Cara Dune since the show’s premiere on the streaming service back in 2019. Her character instantly becoming a fan favorite, and according to sources, Lucasfilm planned to unveil Carano as the star of her own Disney+ series during a December investor’s day presentation. However, those plans were scrapped following her November social media posts, which sparked the hashtag “Fire Gina Carano.” Addressing the firing shortly after, Walt Disney Co. CEO Bob Chapek said Disney stands “for values that are universal: Values of respect, values of decency, values of integrity and values of inclusion. And we seek to have the content that we make reflective of the rich diversity of the world we live in. And I think that’s a world we should all live in harmony and peace.”

Woody Harrelson ‘Insisted’ On Helping Complete Strangers Move Out Of Apartment

Wall Street Journal reporter Alex Janin and her boyfriend, music producer and audio engineer Grant Jefferson, were moving their stuff out of their New York City apartment over the weekend when they got some very random help from the very famous actor Woody Harrelson.
On Saturday, Janin posted a photo of her and the “Zombieland” star holding houseplants and smiling for the camera on Twitter. The caption, which quickly went viral, read:
“Woody Harrelson helped us move out of our apartment today. Love you, NYC.”
“I was just thinking to myself, ‘Only in New York,’” Jefferson told HuffPost of the experience via email. “Naturally, I didn’t want to burden him with helping us but could not turn down having the story to tell my friends.”
Jefferson added that the kind encounter with the actor shifted the way he views celebrity.
“I realized that letting fame harden you or make you pretentious may be more an internal thing than just the outcome of fame,” Jefferson told HuffPost.
In a follow-up tweet, Janin explained that Harrelson was leaving a store next to their building when he saw the couple moving. Janin said she just happened to be moving her bike into a U-Haul at the exact moment Harrelson was on a hunt for a Citibike station. He asked the couple if they knew where the closest one was, they all got to talking and Harrelson — whom Jefferson described as having “total dad vibes” — eventually “insisted” upon helping them move.
And although the act was sweet (especially since Janin also admitted that she lives in a walk-up building), some folks on Twitter were distracted by one particular aspect of Janin’s photo — the state of her fiddle leaf fig plant.
Apparently, Harrleson didn’t beat around the bush when he saw the plant, either.
In response to many Twitter users taking issue with the condition of her plant, Janin wrote: “YES I am aware that my fiddle leaf is basically dead. And yes, Woody did tell me I should water it more.”
Jefferson told HuffPost that after Harrelson helped the couple move, the “True Detective” star “resumed his search for a citi bike.”
And although the couple eventually made their way to their new home, apparently the pathetic plant did not.
“We left it on the street for a (hopefully) better home,” Jefferson said. “I have a fantasy Woody came back later and saved it. He was concerned.”

The God of Mischief is at it again.
On Wednesday, May 5, Disney+ revealed that their highly anticipated Loki series will be arriving sooner than planned. As the new teaser below revealed, the upcoming series will now debut on Wednesday, June 9 instead of Friday, June 11.
Of course, Disney+ had Loki himself Tom Hiddleston break the change of date news. “Hi. Hello, it’s me. It’s Tom,” the Thor actor said while interrupting a montage of the Marvel superheroes. “Look, I’m sorry to interrupt. Um, it’s just I’ve noticed that in these long superhero montages, Loki tends to get a bit left out.”
As he continued, Tom reminded viewers that Loki is “incredibly heroic himself.” After mischievously adding “cunning” and “charming” to his praise of Loki, Tom shared some big TV news.
“I could go on,” he added with a smirk. “But maybe, why don’t I just prove it to you? Wednesdays are the new Fridays.”
This update comes a month after Disney+ revealed the first trailer for the next Marvel series. And, since the new series has quite a bit to do with time, we can’t say we’re surprised by the date switch up.
From what we could understand from the trailer, Loki follows the troublesome adopted brother of Thor (Chris Hemsworth) as he’s tasked with fixing a broken reality. In addition to Tom, Loki stars Owen Wilson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Sophia Di Martino, Wunmi Mosaku and Richard E. Grant.

As the year we all want to end finally does, take a look back at 2020’s mad glory in this comedic retrospective from the creators of “Black Mirror.”
Death to 2020 is a 2020 British mockumentary by Black Mirror creators Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones under their Broke and Bones production company as a Netflix original production. The special features a series of fictional characters discussing US and UK events of 2020 including the COVID-19 pandemic and US presidential election. It was released on Netflix on 27 December 2020. The mockumentary received mostly negative critical reception, with reviewers criticising the jokes as obvious, though some of the cast performances were praised.
In mockumentary format, characters discuss events of 2020 with a mixture of true information and satire. The overarching topic is the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in the US and UK. The 2020 United States presidential election is also heavily featured. Events in the early part of the year include the latter part of the 2019–20 Australian bushfire season, Greta Thunberg’s environmental speeches at the World Economic Forum, Prince Harry and his wife Meghan stepping down from the British royal family and the 2020 Oscars. The May 2020 killing of George Floyd and subsequent US protests are summarized, with commentary on the Donald Trump photo op at St. John’s Church and protesters removing the statue of Edward Colston in Bristol, England.
On the topic of coronavirus, characters comment on the 2020 royal addresses to the nation in the UK, two national lockdowns in England, online circulation of false information, vaccine trials and the first uses of the Pfizer–BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine outside of a clinical trial. With regards to the US election, topics under discussion include acquittal of the impeached Donald Trump, Democratic primaries between Bernie Sanders and the successful Joe Biden, presidential debates between Biden and Trump, The New York Times’ reports on Trump’s tax returns and Biden’s choice of Kamala Harris as running mate. After Biden won the election, Trump attempted to overturn results with a series of false claims and unsuccessful lawsuits.
The mockumentary closes with characters delivering lines that jokingly predict events of 2021.
