Insights Into Teens: Episode 107 “Perspectives Part II”

I part two of our “Perspectives” series we’re asking Madison’s thoughts on another set of interesting questions. This week we’ll talk about parenting, relationships and technology related questions.

In our first segment we’ll get her perspectives on fathers taking paternity leave, should companies market to children, whether or not there’s too much of an attitude of entitlement in today’s youth and more.

Our second segment will find out of age matters in relationships, is it ok for girls to ask out boys, can you just be friends after breaking up with someone, whether it’s ok to date the ex-partner of you friend and more.

We’ll wrap up with technology when we find out if we’re too dependent on computers, are cell phones dangerous, is technology a convenience or a burden, is technology a threat to privacy and more.

hi everyone how you doing today maddie

0:01:07.520,0:01:12.000

0:01:08.960,0:01:14.400
anything exciting to report i just

0:01:12.000,0:01:15.360
had a quiz in the la and today was

0:01:14.400,0:01:17.600
actually a

0:01:15.360,0:01:19.360
pretty chill day other than that so the

0:01:17.600,0:01:22.799
no nothing exciting the report

0:01:32.560,0:01:35.439

0:01:39.119,0:01:44.799
parenting

0:01:40.799,0:01:44.799

0:01:45.360,0:01:49.600
and then finally we’ll finish off

0:01:47.200,0:01:51.360
talking about technology we’ve got 10

0:01:49.600,0:01:55.439
questions in each

0:01:51.360,0:01:56.719
we will go through those and if there’s

0:01:55.439,0:01:59.759

0:03:02.800,0:03:06.530
are we ready yes we are let’s get

0:03:05.440,0:03:11.599
started

0:03:06.530,0:03:14.000
[Music]

0:03:11.599,0:03:15.120
so we’re gonna start off today with

0:03:14.000,0:03:18.480
parenting

0:03:15.120,0:03:21.519
questions uh so we’re going to kind of

0:03:18.480,0:03:22.959
ask you questions about how your parents

0:03:21.519,0:03:25.360
treat you

0:03:22.959,0:03:28.159
and how you think you would be as a

0:03:25.360,0:03:31.120
parent or your perspective on parenting

0:03:28.159,0:03:32.319
okay okay some of these questions are a

0:03:31.120,0:03:35.440
little

0:03:32.319,0:03:37.280
i don’t know off the wall i guess so

0:03:35.440,0:03:40.480
question number one

0:03:37.280,0:03:43.040
should men get paternity leave

0:03:40.480,0:03:45.360
from work so before we get into that let

0:03:43.040,0:03:47.920
me quickly explain

0:03:45.360,0:03:50.159
that paternity leave when i’m gonna when

0:03:47.920,0:03:53.599
a mother is having a baby

0:03:50.159,0:03:55.280
um there’s what’s called the fmla the

0:03:53.599,0:03:58.959
family medical leave act

0:03:55.280,0:04:02.319
okay and that grants the mothers

0:03:58.959,0:04:05.200
up to 12 weeks of maternity leave

0:04:02.319,0:04:07.120
either before or after the birth of the

0:04:05.200,0:04:10.400
child

0:04:07.120,0:04:12.959
now with that in mind do you think the

0:04:10.400,0:04:16.160
father should get a similar

0:04:12.959,0:04:17.199
block of time off to stay home help the

0:04:16.160,0:04:19.199
mom out

0:04:17.199,0:04:21.440
you know get to know the baby that sort

0:04:19.199,0:04:24.800
of thing i definitely think so

0:04:21.440,0:04:25.680
especially if like they’re a single

0:04:24.800,0:04:29.120
father

0:04:25.680,0:04:32.320
and like they like have

0:04:29.120,0:04:35.280
like they adopt a brand new um baby

0:04:32.320,0:04:36.080
that they um kind of need to get to know

0:04:35.280,0:04:39.040
a bit more

0:04:36.080,0:04:39.919
i would definitely say um for that

0:04:39.040,0:04:43.680
especially

0:04:39.919,0:04:46.880
for um also making sure that um

0:04:43.680,0:04:49.919
their um the mother is well

0:04:46.880,0:04:51.919
and you know getting another kid so i’d

0:04:49.919,0:04:52.960
say that they should get parentality

0:04:51.919,0:04:55.680
leave

0:04:52.960,0:04:57.280
and and i would agree with you when you

0:04:55.680,0:04:59.199
were born

0:04:57.280,0:05:01.280
you had some some issues where you had

0:04:59.199,0:05:04.080
to stay in the hospital

0:05:01.280,0:05:05.520
but mommy had uh delivered via c-section

0:05:04.080,0:05:08.400
so she couldn’t come home

0:05:05.520,0:05:09.360
right after giving birth either so she

0:05:08.400,0:05:11.120
was in

0:05:09.360,0:05:12.639
i don’t know four days five days

0:05:11.120,0:05:14.400
something like that

0:05:12.639,0:05:16.160
uh but when she got home she had the

0:05:14.400,0:05:17.919
physical restrictions because she was

0:05:16.160,0:05:19.520
still healing so

0:05:17.919,0:05:21.039
uh there was a lot of stuff that she

0:05:19.520,0:05:23.520
couldn’t do

0:05:21.039,0:05:25.360
the as much as i can call it an

0:05:23.520,0:05:27.520
advantage the one advantage of you

0:05:25.360,0:05:29.199
having to remain in the hospital even

0:05:27.520,0:05:31.039
after mommy came home

0:05:29.199,0:05:33.199
was that mommy had a chance to rest at

0:05:31.039,0:05:34.240
home and heal up before we actually had

0:05:33.199,0:05:37.039
you home and

0:05:34.240,0:05:38.000
she was on the go constantly so it

0:05:37.039,0:05:41.360
totally makes sense

0:05:38.000,0:05:42.160
and under fmla eligible employees male

0:05:41.360,0:05:44.479
or female

0:05:42.160,0:05:46.080
are allowed up to 12 weeks of unpaid

0:05:44.479,0:05:48.639
leave so that basically your employer

0:05:46.080,0:05:52.080
has to hold your job for you

0:05:48.639,0:05:54.000
so that is there so and i agree with you

0:05:52.080,0:05:56.080
a hundred percent there

0:05:54.000,0:05:57.600
so question number two deals with

0:05:56.080,0:05:59.840
curfews

0:05:57.600,0:06:02.800
do curfews well first of all let me ask

0:05:59.840,0:06:05.919
do we do we put a curfew on you

0:06:02.800,0:06:07.039
i mean kind of by eight i need to be

0:06:05.919,0:06:10.720
downstairs

0:06:07.039,0:06:11.680
to watch um our show or my show with

0:06:10.720,0:06:14.160
mommy

0:06:11.680,0:06:14.880
and by nine is kind of when i go to bed

0:06:14.160,0:06:16.639
yeah but

0:06:14.880,0:06:18.080
because you don’t really go out and

0:06:16.639,0:06:20.319
socialize a lot

0:06:18.080,0:06:22.880
there’s not much occasion to give you a

0:06:20.319,0:06:24.240
curfew like when i when i was your age

0:06:22.880,0:06:26.240
i would go out and hang out with my

0:06:24.240,0:06:27.680
friends and stuff like that but i had a

0:06:26.240,0:06:31.440
10 o’clock curfew

0:06:27.680,0:06:34.080
um during school week

0:06:31.440,0:06:35.840
so i had to be home by 10 o’clock and

0:06:34.080,0:06:37.360
you know usually my best friend lived

0:06:35.840,0:06:39.199
on the next street over so i was never

0:06:37.360,0:06:42.400
very far from home

0:06:39.199,0:06:45.199
so the question here is do curfews keep

0:06:42.400,0:06:46.720
teens out of trouble i would say it

0:06:45.199,0:06:49.680
depends on the teen

0:06:46.720,0:06:50.800
like i definitely think that um teens

0:06:49.680,0:06:54.400
who are a lot more

0:06:50.800,0:06:56.479
obedient um like

0:06:54.400,0:06:58.560
the teens that will abide by it and

0:06:56.479,0:07:00.160
won’t question the parents decision it

0:06:58.560,0:07:02.560
can definitely keep them out of trouble

0:07:00.160,0:07:04.319
especially if they were to

0:07:02.560,0:07:06.080
stay out late at night and something

0:07:04.319,0:07:08.800
would happen to them

0:07:06.080,0:07:10.400
but then we have the teens who kind of

0:07:08.800,0:07:13.280
break their curfews

0:07:10.400,0:07:16.240
and get infuriated by them and it kind

0:07:13.280,0:07:16.720
of gets them into even more trouble not

0:07:16.240,0:07:19.759
just

0:07:16.720,0:07:21.120
in danger but also trouble with peers

0:07:19.759,0:07:23.680
and parents

0:07:21.120,0:07:25.120
so i’d say it really kind of depends on

0:07:23.680,0:07:27.440
how the kid

0:07:25.120,0:07:29.440
how the kid is that’s interesting i

0:07:27.440,0:07:31.440
hadn’t i hadn’t considered the

0:07:29.440,0:07:34.880
the fact that the curfew itself could be

0:07:31.440,0:07:38.400
an aggravating factor there

0:07:34.880,0:07:41.759
next question is child behavior better

0:07:38.400,0:07:44.879
or worse than it was years ago

0:07:41.759,0:07:47.919
so before i answer this couldn’t you um

0:07:44.879,0:07:51.360
give me kind of an overview

0:07:47.919,0:07:52.879
of what trial up child behavior was like

0:07:51.360,0:07:57.199
in the past

0:07:52.879,0:08:00.400
well when i grew up a lot of what we did

0:07:57.199,0:08:01.919
was outside the house so we were

0:08:00.400,0:08:05.120
constantly out

0:08:01.919,0:08:07.840
playing or hanging out or playing sports

0:08:05.120,0:08:09.039
or if you were over somebody’s house you

0:08:07.840,0:08:11.759
were over their house for

0:08:09.039,0:08:12.080
a short period of time that there wasn’t

0:08:11.759,0:08:14.479
as

0:08:12.080,0:08:16.080
much online well there was no online

0:08:14.479,0:08:20.160
activity

0:08:16.080,0:08:22.720
so everything occurred outside and

0:08:20.160,0:08:24.479
when things are you know outside you

0:08:22.720,0:08:25.120
running this stuff where kids get bored

0:08:24.479,0:08:28.080
and they start

0:08:25.120,0:08:29.680
doing things that they probably

0:08:28.080,0:08:32.000
shouldn’t be doing

0:08:29.680,0:08:33.680
trespassing on other people’s property

0:08:32.000,0:08:34.000
damaging people’s property when they

0:08:33.680,0:08:36.000
play

0:08:34.000,0:08:37.839
games like we used to play a game on my

0:08:36.000,0:08:39.680
street called manhunt

0:08:37.839,0:08:42.080
and it was basically a modified version

0:08:39.680,0:08:45.120
of hide and seek in teams

0:08:42.080,0:08:47.200
but you weren’t doing it

0:08:45.120,0:08:49.120
in ju on the street so you were running

0:08:47.200,0:08:50.720
through people’s backyards and all

0:08:49.120,0:08:51.040
people’s properties and stuff like that

0:08:50.720,0:08:53.839
and

0:08:51.040,0:08:55.680
occasionally we would break things but

0:08:53.839,0:08:59.279
that was all a factor of everything

0:08:55.680,0:09:00.560
being outside the house for so nowadays

0:08:59.279,0:09:02.320
you don’t have as much of that

0:09:00.560,0:09:04.080
a lot a lot of times you’re in the house

0:09:02.320,0:09:05.120
a lot more than you are outside the

0:09:04.080,0:09:08.480
house now so

0:09:05.120,0:09:11.920
kind of look at it from that perspective

0:09:08.480,0:09:13.839
so i could definitely say that

0:09:11.920,0:09:15.440
i mean kids haven’t gotten into trouble

0:09:13.839,0:09:16.160
with their neighbors as much as they

0:09:15.440,0:09:18.640
used to

0:09:16.160,0:09:19.519
like i do but i do still see kids

0:09:18.640,0:09:23.040
outside

0:09:19.519,0:09:26.000
so that’s a good thing but

0:09:23.040,0:09:26.800
there’s also a problem with kids when

0:09:26.000,0:09:30.000
they uh

0:09:26.800,0:09:30.480
are on the internet too much some kids

0:09:30.000,0:09:34.560
can be

0:09:30.480,0:09:37.040
pretty cruel and there are a lot of

0:09:34.560,0:09:37.760
like things that kids have kind of

0:09:37.040,0:09:40.240
messed up

0:09:37.760,0:09:41.680
because they are born on the internet

0:09:40.240,0:09:45.200
and don’t really think

0:09:41.680,0:09:48.320
that it their opinion affects people

0:09:45.200,0:09:52.080
um so

0:09:48.320,0:09:54.080
it’s kind of 50 50 at this point um

0:09:52.080,0:09:55.680
they’re probably not doing physical

0:09:54.080,0:09:58.640
damage but

0:09:55.680,0:09:59.279
they’re also still kind of doing damage

0:09:58.640,0:10:02.079
so

0:09:59.279,0:10:03.680
i’d say just watch out for your kids

0:10:02.079,0:10:05.120
yeah and i would agree with you there i

0:10:03.680,0:10:08.160
think

0:10:05.120,0:10:10.000
i think some of the bad behaviors

0:10:08.160,0:10:12.399
or most of the bad behaviors are still

0:10:10.000,0:10:12.880
there they just take on a different form

0:10:12.399,0:10:16.720
now

0:10:12.880,0:10:18.720
yeah um you would

0:10:16.720,0:10:21.680
trespass on people’s property before

0:10:18.720,0:10:25.120
what you may be trespassing on people’s

0:10:21.680,0:10:26.800
social media or their websites or

0:10:25.120,0:10:29.519
something like that now

0:10:26.800,0:10:30.160
and i think the risks probably are a

0:10:29.519,0:10:33.360
little bit

0:10:30.160,0:10:36.399
higher now because

0:10:33.360,0:10:37.680
the exposure that you have in an online

0:10:36.399,0:10:40.720
world

0:10:37.680,0:10:41.839
is significantly greater than you did in

0:10:40.720,0:10:43.680
your neighborhood

0:10:41.839,0:10:45.680
yeah you know when we were growing up

0:10:43.680,0:10:48.240
you always were told to watch out for

0:10:45.680,0:10:49.680
suspicious cars or or people that were

0:10:48.240,0:10:51.600
you know adults that you didn’t know who

0:10:49.680,0:10:55.279
were talking to the kids

0:10:51.600,0:10:55.920
and that was the sort of um predatory

0:10:55.279,0:10:57.760
type

0:10:55.920,0:10:59.519
individual you could see him that was

0:10:57.760,0:11:01.920
very clear

0:10:59.519,0:11:03.200
so you knew who it was and you knew they

0:11:01.920,0:11:06.079
didn’t belong

0:11:03.200,0:11:07.040
whereas online you were exposed to a

0:11:06.079,0:11:09.120
much

0:11:07.040,0:11:10.800
wider array of people that you have to

0:11:09.120,0:11:12.480
be careful with

0:11:10.800,0:11:14.240
and you don’t know who they are because

0:11:12.480,0:11:16.880
they’re hiding behind

0:11:14.240,0:11:19.040
a keyboard somewhere so someone who may

0:11:16.880,0:11:22.160
be pretending to be

0:11:19.040,0:11:25.839
another 14 year old girl who’s trying to

0:11:22.160,0:11:27.839
empathize with you and relate to you

0:11:25.839,0:11:29.440
might be a 50 year old man who’s trying

0:11:27.839,0:11:31.279
to lure you out of the house to do

0:11:29.440,0:11:33.279
something inappropriate

0:11:31.279,0:11:34.959
and you don’t know that because it’s not

0:11:33.279,0:11:37.600
that obvious yeah

0:11:34.959,0:11:38.320
so the dangers are i think significantly

0:11:37.600,0:11:42.560
higher

0:11:38.320,0:11:44.640
yeah question number four

0:11:42.560,0:11:46.560
and again i think this one is also

0:11:44.640,0:11:50.399
really tied to technology

0:11:46.560,0:11:52.390
should companies market to children

0:11:50.399,0:11:54.320
uh

0:11:52.390,0:11:59.440
[Music]

0:11:54.320,0:12:02.800
i mean i think some companies definitely

0:11:59.440,0:12:03.360
shouldn’t because a lot of it’s just

0:12:02.800,0:12:06.160
like

0:12:03.360,0:12:07.920
hey get your parents to get you this and

0:12:06.160,0:12:10.079
spend money on our products

0:12:07.920,0:12:11.839
like i think that’s kind of the main

0:12:10.079,0:12:14.959
thing that people do

0:12:11.839,0:12:16.079
but i think it’s really bad when like

0:12:14.959,0:12:18.959
what the marketing

0:12:16.079,0:12:21.120
is not child friendly and shouldn’t be

0:12:18.959,0:12:23.040
exposed to children

0:12:21.120,0:12:24.800
that’s probably when it really gets to

0:12:23.040,0:12:26.639
be a problem

0:12:24.800,0:12:28.880
um i’m pretty sure we’re not going to be

0:12:26.639,0:12:31.600
able to stop companies from

0:12:28.880,0:12:33.200
marketing the children and i don’t think

0:12:31.600,0:12:34.320
there’s anything wrong with kids wanting

0:12:33.200,0:12:36.399
to have toys

0:12:34.320,0:12:38.720
it’s just the companies clearly just

0:12:36.399,0:12:40.480
want to make money and some companies

0:12:38.720,0:12:43.839
don’t entirely care about the kids

0:12:40.480,0:12:45.839
safety they just want to make money so

0:12:43.839,0:12:47.360
yeah there’s a certain point where they

0:12:45.839,0:12:49.519
should probably not

0:12:47.360,0:12:51.120
yeah and and you know this goes back to

0:12:49.519,0:12:52.560
the technology again you know when i was

0:12:51.120,0:12:54.480
a kid

0:12:52.560,0:12:55.600
the only marketing i was really exposed

0:12:54.480,0:12:57.920
to

0:12:55.600,0:13:00.079
was television or radio or whatever the

0:12:57.920,0:13:02.959
medium happened to me at the time

0:13:00.079,0:13:04.639
so i’d watch saturday morning cartoons

0:13:02.959,0:13:06.160
or whatever i watched when i got home

0:13:04.639,0:13:09.440
from school and you would get

0:13:06.160,0:13:12.720
this influx of product marketing

0:13:09.440,0:13:16.399
to that age group

0:13:12.720,0:13:18.320
and it was a very non it was targeted to

0:13:16.399,0:13:19.279
the age group but it wasn’t targeted to

0:13:18.320,0:13:21.360
me

0:13:19.279,0:13:23.519
whereas with the technology we have

0:13:21.360,0:13:26.240
today

0:13:23.519,0:13:29.440
and the amount of tracking that happens

0:13:26.240,0:13:32.959
with your online presence

0:13:29.440,0:13:35.760
people companies can market directly

0:13:32.959,0:13:37.760
to you now by looking at what websites

0:13:35.760,0:13:41.040
you go to what products you buy

0:13:37.760,0:13:42.560
what videos you watch who your friends

0:13:41.040,0:13:44.959
are

0:13:42.560,0:13:47.360
the region that you live in so they have

0:13:44.959,0:13:49.199
so much information on you now

0:13:47.360,0:13:51.120
that you get these personalized ads

0:13:49.199,0:13:54.079
where it’s almost like

0:13:51.120,0:13:54.639
they’re talking directly to you and that

0:13:54.079,0:13:57.760
can be

0:13:54.639,0:14:00.959
much more intoxicating to

0:13:57.760,0:14:02.480
a teen than seeing a generic ad for a

0:14:00.959,0:14:04.720
new toy yeah

0:14:02.480,0:14:06.079
so it’s a it’s a it’s a more

0:14:04.720,0:14:08.320
personalized but

0:14:06.079,0:14:09.760
in some way more powerful form of

0:14:08.320,0:14:13.600
marketing as well

0:14:09.760,0:14:17.279
yeah question number six

0:14:13.600,0:14:19.120
no question number five counting math is

0:14:17.279,0:14:21.839
so tough

0:14:19.120,0:14:23.360
when should parents let teens make their

0:14:21.839,0:14:25.199
own decisions

0:14:23.360,0:14:27.680
so i don’t think there’s a defined time

0:14:25.199,0:14:28.880
for this and it really just depends on

0:14:27.680,0:14:31.440
how mature the teen

0:14:28.880,0:14:32.880
is when they’re making their decisions

0:14:31.440,0:14:35.360
if they’re mature enough

0:14:32.880,0:14:37.279
and they’ve been and they’ve been shown

0:14:35.360,0:14:38.480
that they can make their own decisions

0:14:37.279,0:14:40.639
i’d say

0:14:38.480,0:14:41.839
then you can let them make their don’t

0:14:40.639,0:14:44.480
their own decisions

0:14:41.839,0:14:46.079
on what they like what they don’t like

0:14:44.480,0:14:48.720
that kind of thing

0:14:46.079,0:14:50.000
um but i do think that there are some

0:14:48.720,0:14:53.199
teens that

0:14:50.000,0:14:54.720
make pretty bad decisions and

0:14:53.199,0:14:56.560
parents kind of have to have a bit more

0:14:54.720,0:14:58.560
control with them and

0:14:56.560,0:15:00.480
not let them make too many of their own

0:14:58.560,0:15:02.639
decisions just to keep them safe

0:15:00.480,0:15:04.720
at least that’s a good point it’s more

0:15:02.639,0:15:06.720
of a judgment call

0:15:04.720,0:15:08.399
than you know saying that you’re 13 you

0:15:06.720,0:15:10.800
can make your own decisions now

0:15:08.399,0:15:12.480
yeah and it’s you know you you invest a

0:15:10.800,0:15:13.680
certain amount of responsibility in the

0:15:12.480,0:15:15.680
child

0:15:13.680,0:15:17.440
and see how they react to it some react

0:15:15.680,0:15:19.519
well and they can handle it some

0:15:17.440,0:15:20.720
some can’t and you kind of have to pull

0:15:19.519,0:15:23.760
back on the reins a little bit until

0:15:20.720,0:15:25.920
they get a little bit more mature

0:15:23.760,0:15:27.120
now question number six it was such a

0:15:25.920,0:15:29.120
good question i wanted to skip

0:15:27.120,0:15:33.440
everything else

0:15:29.120,0:15:33.440
do teens have decent role models today

0:15:34.320,0:15:37.680
i don’t entirely know how to answer this

0:15:36.800,0:15:41.759
because

0:15:37.680,0:15:44.160
personally i don’t entirely have

0:15:41.759,0:15:46.079
role models that i’m pretty sure plenty

0:15:44.160,0:15:47.680
of other people have like

0:15:46.079,0:15:49.279
of course i have the generic you and

0:15:47.680,0:15:52.320
mommy as my role models

0:15:49.279,0:15:55.839
but i don’t entirely i don’t consider

0:15:52.320,0:15:55.839
myself generic at all by the way

0:15:56.800,0:15:59.839
it’s just i don’t

0:16:00.000,0:16:03.519
i don’t entirely know how to answer this

0:16:01.600,0:16:06.560
because i don’t know like

0:16:03.519,0:16:09.040
i really don’t have any experience with

0:16:06.560,0:16:10.320
role models in the media routines at

0:16:09.040,0:16:13.440
least

0:16:10.320,0:16:15.759
um like

0:16:13.440,0:16:17.600
i don’t know really how to answer that

0:16:15.759,0:16:20.800
well and i can tell you that as a

0:16:17.600,0:16:22.639
as a child as a teenager myself most of

0:16:20.800,0:16:26.800
my role models

0:16:22.639,0:16:30.399
i drew on fiction for my role models

0:16:26.800,0:16:33.920
because i don’t know i think

0:16:30.399,0:16:36.160
i think creatively things were a lot

0:16:33.920,0:16:37.839
more black and white when i was a kid

0:16:36.160,0:16:39.839
you know you had good guys and you had

0:16:37.839,0:16:42.399
bad guys there weren’t shades of grey in

0:16:39.839,0:16:45.040
between you rather one or the other

0:16:42.399,0:16:46.000
and it made it very easy to look at

0:16:45.040,0:16:48.959
things

0:16:46.000,0:16:50.160
that i was interested in tv shows for

0:16:48.959,0:16:52.320
instance

0:16:50.160,0:16:54.160
um transformers was a great one i used

0:16:52.320,0:16:57.360
to love transformers

0:16:54.160,0:16:58.880
um optimus prime optimus prime was the

0:16:57.360,0:17:00.639
ultimate good guy

0:16:58.880,0:17:02.240
he was always a good guy he always did

0:17:00.639,0:17:05.360
the right thing

0:17:02.240,0:17:07.360
uh was a cool looking truck had

0:17:05.360,0:17:08.880
you know a really you know peter cullen

0:17:07.360,0:17:10.400
did the voice he did an awesome voice

0:17:08.880,0:17:14.240
for optimus prime

0:17:10.400,0:17:14.880
but you had these moral good versus evil

0:17:14.240,0:17:18.079
plays

0:17:14.880,0:17:21.199
where it made it very easy to

0:17:18.079,0:17:22.720
pick the good guy or to recognize the

0:17:21.199,0:17:25.679
bad guy

0:17:22.720,0:17:28.160
and you know whether it was transformers

0:17:25.679,0:17:29.440
or gi joe or star wars or whatever it

0:17:28.160,0:17:31.440
was

0:17:29.440,0:17:33.200
i never looked at celebrities as role

0:17:31.440,0:17:34.799
models i never

0:17:33.200,0:17:36.480
like a lot of people worship celebrities

0:17:34.799,0:17:40.799
i never really got into that

0:17:36.480,0:17:43.840
yeah right so my thing was always

0:17:40.799,0:17:46.400
either characters from literature or

0:17:43.840,0:17:47.280
um television shows or movies or

0:17:46.400,0:17:49.679
whatever

0:17:47.280,0:17:51.280
that was that was who i relate it to you

0:17:49.679,0:17:52.640
know that was the character that i could

0:17:51.280,0:17:54.960
get into

0:17:52.640,0:17:56.880
and that was where the life lessons were

0:17:54.960,0:17:58.000
a lot of times because it was so black

0:17:56.880,0:18:00.480
and white

0:17:58.000,0:18:01.679
and i don’t think today’s entertainment

0:18:00.480,0:18:05.039
for teens

0:18:01.679,0:18:08.480
is that black and white you have so many

0:18:05.039,0:18:10.799
anti-heroes now so many

0:18:08.480,0:18:12.880
so many heroes or so so many characters

0:18:10.799,0:18:14.559
that play both sides of that fence and

0:18:12.880,0:18:17.919
sometimes

0:18:14.559,0:18:21.120
they’re morally ambiguous

0:18:17.919,0:18:23.440
you have a lot more flawed characters

0:18:21.120,0:18:25.120
that you see in television and movies

0:18:23.440,0:18:28.080
now

0:18:25.120,0:18:30.240
so it’s not as easy to see what what a

0:18:28.080,0:18:33.600
good guy or a bad guy is in

0:18:30.240,0:18:34.400
in fictional accounts so i think a lot

0:18:33.600,0:18:37.600
of teens

0:18:34.400,0:18:40.160
turn towards athletes

0:18:37.600,0:18:41.520
or celebrities and they see oh you know

0:18:40.160,0:18:44.559
this guy

0:18:41.520,0:18:47.120
uh a basketball player who uh

0:18:44.559,0:18:48.400
grew up poor and got his big shot and

0:18:47.120,0:18:50.480
now he’s

0:18:48.400,0:18:52.240
uh a multi-millionaire and he’s got his

0:18:50.480,0:18:54.320
own shoe line that’s who i want to be

0:18:52.240,0:18:56.400
because he’s so successful

0:18:54.320,0:18:57.440
and i think the reason behind some of

0:18:56.400,0:19:00.559
that motivation

0:18:57.440,0:19:02.880
for using them as a role model might

0:19:00.559,0:19:05.200
not might be disingenuous from what role

0:19:02.880,0:19:08.320
models were when i was a kid at least

0:19:05.200,0:19:09.520
i mean yeah i can understand that um

0:19:08.320,0:19:11.760
and i definitely think that some

0:19:09.520,0:19:13.520
fictional characters might like it’s

0:19:11.760,0:19:17.440
definitely hard to depict

0:19:13.520,0:19:19.919
who’s good and who’s bad um

0:19:17.440,0:19:21.520
so yeah i can definitely understand your

0:19:19.919,0:19:25.120
aspect of that

0:19:21.520,0:19:28.480
okay so the next question we have

0:19:25.120,0:19:32.160
is is there too much of an attitude

0:19:28.480,0:19:34.000
of entitlement in today’s youth

0:19:32.160,0:19:36.640
you know what me what i mean by that

0:19:34.000,0:19:40.000
yeah and

0:19:36.640,0:19:42.960
yeah i’m pretty sure that lots of

0:19:40.000,0:19:46.320
kids at this point have kind of gotten

0:19:42.960,0:19:49.679
the feeling of being really entitled

0:19:46.320,0:19:51.280
um there are plenty of kids who are

0:19:49.679,0:19:54.160
demanding

0:19:51.280,0:19:54.880
who are spoiled who want everything in

0:19:54.160,0:19:56.880
the world

0:19:54.880,0:19:58.400
and don’t think they need to work hard

0:19:56.880,0:20:01.440
for it

0:19:58.400,0:20:02.720
there’s a lot of kids like that that

0:20:01.440,0:20:06.480
i’ve been seeing

0:20:02.720,0:20:07.919
recently and there’s

0:20:06.480,0:20:10.960
i definitely think there’s a bit too

0:20:07.919,0:20:13.679
much entitlement and attitude

0:20:10.960,0:20:15.039
in today’s youth of course there are

0:20:13.679,0:20:17.760
exceptions to that

0:20:15.039,0:20:18.640
but overall when you take a group of

0:20:17.760,0:20:20.480
kids

0:20:18.640,0:20:22.880
most of them are more than likely going

0:20:20.480,0:20:26.240
to have some form of entitlement

0:20:22.880,0:20:27.600
okay fair enough so the next question

0:20:26.240,0:20:31.520
has to deal

0:20:27.600,0:20:34.400
with chores and getting paid for them

0:20:31.520,0:20:36.240
which you do so the question is should

0:20:34.400,0:20:40.400
teens get paid to do chores

0:20:36.240,0:20:41.039
around the house so i think teens should

0:20:40.400,0:20:42.880
be

0:20:41.039,0:20:44.960
at least somewhat rewarded for their

0:20:42.880,0:20:47.120
chores like i can definitely see a

0:20:44.960,0:20:48.480
family who can’t entirely afford to pay

0:20:47.120,0:20:50.559
their teen for the chores

0:20:48.480,0:20:51.600
so you don’t actually have to give them

0:20:50.559,0:20:53.280
money for it

0:20:51.600,0:20:55.200
but i would say at least giving them

0:20:53.280,0:20:57.360
some type of reward so that they can

0:20:55.200,0:21:00.640
still stay motivated and it’s like

0:20:57.360,0:21:02.720
oh hey if i do my chores i get this

0:21:00.640,0:21:04.080
and it’s a good way of teaching them

0:21:02.720,0:21:06.640
hard work and

0:21:04.080,0:21:07.760
how to motivate you and giving them

0:21:06.640,0:21:11.039
motivation

0:21:07.760,0:21:13.200
and and a reward for doing hard work and

0:21:11.039,0:21:15.039
and i agree with you 100 which is why we

0:21:13.200,0:21:18.640
do pay to do yours be and

0:21:15.039,0:21:21.280
i’ll even go a little bit beyond that is

0:21:18.640,0:21:22.880
it teaches you the value of a dollar and

0:21:21.280,0:21:25.120
this kind of goes hand in hand with that

0:21:22.880,0:21:27.039
sense of entitlement where

0:21:25.120,0:21:28.320
a lot of kids the kids that don’t have

0:21:27.039,0:21:30.480
to work

0:21:28.320,0:21:32.559
for the things that they want and just

0:21:30.480,0:21:34.960
have it handed to them

0:21:32.559,0:21:36.400
generally and and there are exceptions

0:21:34.960,0:21:38.480
but generally there’s a lack of

0:21:36.400,0:21:39.919
appreciation for what it takes to get

0:21:38.480,0:21:41.679
the things you want

0:21:39.919,0:21:43.360
you know you want a new game system you

0:21:41.679,0:21:45.520
want a new book bag you want a new

0:21:43.360,0:21:48.720
bicycle whatever it is

0:21:45.520,0:21:49.120
if it’s just given to you then you don’t

0:21:48.720,0:21:51.200
have an

0:21:49.120,0:21:52.880
investment in it and you don’t treat it

0:21:51.200,0:21:54.080
with the respect you would if you would

0:21:52.880,0:21:56.320
earned it

0:21:54.080,0:21:58.000
but when you work and you earn the money

0:21:56.320,0:22:01.360
and you take your money and spend

0:21:58.000,0:22:04.559
it either on yourself or someone else

0:22:01.360,0:22:07.520
there’s a much greater investment

0:22:04.559,0:22:09.679
in what you’re spending that on you

0:22:07.520,0:22:13.360
respect your property more

0:22:09.679,0:22:16.159
when you’ve worked to earn that property

0:22:13.360,0:22:18.159
and and i think kids that don’t have

0:22:16.159,0:22:22.640
that

0:22:18.159,0:22:24.840
reward motivation to do chores

0:22:22.640,0:22:27.600
don’t gain the benefit of that

0:22:24.840,0:22:29.600
appreciation

0:22:27.600,0:22:31.600
but you clearly appreciate the things

0:22:29.600,0:22:32.960
that you have which is

0:22:31.600,0:22:34.640
which is a good thing it means that

0:22:32.960,0:22:35.360
mommy and i are doing something right

0:22:34.640,0:22:37.679
around here

0:22:35.360,0:22:37.679
yay

0:22:38.480,0:22:42.480
question nine how should parents

0:22:40.640,0:22:44.799
discipline their children in today’s

0:22:42.480,0:22:48.000
society

0:22:44.799,0:22:48.960
okay so this also kind of depends on the

0:22:48.000,0:22:52.080
kid

0:22:48.960,0:22:54.640
um if the kid has shown to be

0:22:52.080,0:22:56.720
well you don’t really have to just like

0:22:54.640,0:22:57.840
the discipline doesn’t have to entirely

0:22:56.720,0:23:00.240
be harsh

0:22:57.840,0:23:01.120
if the kid like doesn’t care and doesn’t

0:23:00.240,0:23:04.640
understand

0:23:01.120,0:23:07.840
and really doesn’t have any um

0:23:04.640,0:23:09.280
really once again doesn’t care then i

0:23:07.840,0:23:12.480
definitely think the punishment

0:23:09.280,0:23:15.840
like the uh not punishment discipline

0:23:12.480,0:23:18.559
should be a bit harder on them um

0:23:15.840,0:23:19.360
but there’s definitely one thing that i

0:23:18.559,0:23:22.320
can agree

0:23:19.360,0:23:24.240
that should never be implemented in

0:23:22.320,0:23:27.200
discipline

0:23:24.240,0:23:27.840
don’t harm your kid violence physically

0:23:27.200,0:23:31.840
you mean

0:23:27.840,0:23:33.200
physically and mentally

0:23:31.840,0:23:34.320
we shouldn’t harm you either yeah we

0:23:33.200,0:23:36.000
shouldn’t i’ll write that out you

0:23:34.320,0:23:38.640
shouldn’t hurt your kids in any

0:23:36.000,0:23:40.480
way that’s pretty much what i’m saying

0:23:38.640,0:23:41.520
like don’t hurt them emotionally don’t

0:23:40.480,0:23:43.840
hurt them physically

0:23:41.520,0:23:44.880
don’t hurt them mentally violence in

0:23:43.840,0:23:47.279
either sense

0:23:44.880,0:23:48.799
is never the option so bearing that in

0:23:47.279,0:23:52.559
mind what do you

0:23:48.799,0:23:56.159
consider to be acceptable disciplined

0:23:52.559,0:23:59.919
um i definitely think that

0:23:56.159,0:24:03.440
um like taking away

0:23:59.919,0:24:06.480
small benefits is an exceptional no

0:24:03.440,0:24:08.400
way to discipline your kids like taking

0:24:06.480,0:24:09.360
away one of their toys or taking away

0:24:08.400,0:24:11.520
their device

0:24:09.360,0:24:13.440
so so no you do something wrong and you

0:24:11.520,0:24:16.559
don’t get your game system for this week

0:24:13.440,0:24:18.240
well if it is an extreme thing

0:24:16.559,0:24:19.840
i definitely think that you should

0:24:18.240,0:24:22.960
probably have a talk

0:24:19.840,0:24:26.320
a bit more and like

0:24:22.960,0:24:30.559
some small form of punishment um maybe

0:24:26.320,0:24:32.400
like maybe say this time that you

0:24:30.559,0:24:34.000
maybe do your chores but you don’t get

0:24:32.400,0:24:36.559
paid that kind of thing okay

0:24:34.000,0:24:37.360
so deprivation rather than anything

0:24:36.559,0:24:38.960
harsh

0:24:37.360,0:24:41.039
yeah and like maybe you should work with

0:24:38.960,0:24:44.400
your teen a bit more and you can then

0:24:41.039,0:24:45.039
kind of decide which punishment would be

0:24:44.400,0:24:48.799
better

0:24:45.039,0:24:49.760
well punishment wait form of discipline

0:24:48.799,0:24:53.039
i prefer to say

0:24:49.760,0:24:55.440
sure um so yeah okay

0:24:53.039,0:24:57.039
that works so the last question we had

0:24:55.440,0:24:58.880
in this category

0:24:57.039,0:25:00.960
and then we can give you your your uh

0:24:58.880,0:25:04.000
parenting certificate

0:25:00.960,0:25:06.559
is at what age do you think

0:25:04.000,0:25:06.559
excuse me

0:25:08.240,0:25:12.080
what age is it okay for kids to stay

0:25:10.480,0:25:14.240
home by themselves

0:25:12.080,0:25:16.000
okay going along with the other question

0:25:14.240,0:25:19.520
i don’t think there is a defined

0:25:16.000,0:25:23.120
age for um

0:25:19.520,0:25:24.080
for a teen to have to stay home by

0:25:23.120,0:25:26.000
themselves

0:25:24.080,0:25:29.039
it’s more or less if the parents feel

0:25:26.000,0:25:32.159
they are responsible enough

0:25:29.039,0:25:32.720
it can they stay home by themselves

0:25:32.159,0:25:35.760
without

0:25:32.720,0:25:37.200
causing harm to the house or themselves

0:25:35.760,0:25:40.240
that’s basically kind of what the

0:25:37.200,0:25:42.480
parents have to think about because

0:25:40.240,0:25:44.159
i definitely think some teens can’t stay

0:25:42.480,0:25:45.760
home by themselves who are about the

0:25:44.159,0:25:48.720
same age as me

0:25:45.760,0:25:50.799
um and i definitely think that there are

0:25:48.720,0:25:52.080
some teens who are about my age that are

0:25:50.799,0:25:54.720
probably mature enough

0:25:52.080,0:25:56.080
that they can stay home alone so it

0:25:54.720,0:25:58.799
really just depends

0:25:56.080,0:26:00.640
if they can handle the responsibility so

0:25:58.799,0:26:04.400
another judgment call by the parents

0:26:00.640,0:26:07.440
based on how the child reacts to it yep

0:26:04.400,0:26:08.080
understood sounds good that’s all we had

0:26:07.440,0:26:10.960
for this

0:26:08.080,0:26:12.000
uh series of questions we’ll be right

welcome back to insights into teens

0:27:26.960,0:27:32.240
we’re getting perspectives

0:27:28.720,0:27:33.840
teen perspectives up next is actually

0:27:32.240,0:27:35.600
relationships we’re not going to talk

0:27:33.840,0:27:38.240
about technology yet that was just a

0:27:35.600,0:27:42.080
tease for the end of the show

0:27:38.240,0:27:43.679
so our first question on relationships

0:27:42.080,0:27:45.760
because i know you love talking about

0:27:43.679,0:27:49.679
relationships

0:27:45.760,0:27:52.320
does age matter in a relationship

0:27:49.679,0:27:53.760
definitely that is probably one of the

0:27:52.320,0:27:56.720
only factors

0:27:53.760,0:27:59.440
that matters in a relationship you can

0:27:56.720,0:28:02.480
like whatever gender you want

0:27:59.440,0:28:05.919
you can have whatever preference

0:28:02.480,0:28:08.399
but one thing that should

0:28:05.919,0:28:09.600
matter probably one of the only things

0:28:08.399,0:28:13.039
that matters

0:28:09.600,0:28:13.039
is age like

0:28:14.159,0:28:19.600
like hands down i don’t i don’t care if

0:28:17.520,0:28:21.039
you say oh it’s okay for someone who’s

0:28:19.600,0:28:24.480
10 years younger to date some

0:28:21.039,0:28:28.000
no age matters in a relationship and

0:28:24.480,0:28:28.320
you cannot change my mind so explain to

0:28:28.000,0:28:31.440
me

0:28:28.320,0:28:34.559
why age matters

0:28:31.440,0:28:37.200
because because

0:28:34.559,0:28:37.200
okay so

0:28:38.240,0:28:42.000
the main problem with this is when you

0:28:40.320,0:28:45.840
think about someone who

0:28:42.000,0:28:48.480
could be someone kind of young

0:28:45.840,0:28:51.039
dating someone who’s old enough to be

0:28:48.480,0:28:54.480
their parent

0:28:51.039,0:28:57.840
like that feeling just makes

0:28:54.480,0:29:01.600
many people myself included

0:28:57.840,0:29:04.159
extremely uncomfortable and

0:29:01.600,0:29:05.039
especially if you’re going if we’re

0:29:04.159,0:29:08.240
thinking about

0:29:05.039,0:29:10.000
younger kids yes age definitely matters

0:29:08.240,0:29:10.799
in a relationship no one’s gonna change

0:29:10.000,0:29:13.200
my mind

0:29:10.799,0:29:15.039
age is the only factor that would matter

0:29:13.200,0:29:17.120
in any type of relationship

0:29:15.039,0:29:18.320
well you seem very strong about this

0:29:17.120,0:29:20.000
definitely yes

0:29:18.320,0:29:21.919
well i have to tell my brother who

0:29:20.000,0:29:24.799
married someone who was younger

0:29:21.919,0:29:26.000
he’s 10 years older than me he married

0:29:24.799,0:29:29.760
someone who was younger than

0:29:26.000,0:29:31.840
i was and to the best of my knowledge

0:29:29.760,0:29:35.760
you’re still happily married

0:29:31.840,0:29:37.760
you have certain marriages you have um

0:29:35.760,0:29:39.039
michael douglas i think is is a good

0:29:37.760,0:29:40.720
example

0:29:39.039,0:29:43.200
his wife i think is almost 20 years

0:29:40.720,0:29:45.919
younger than he is

0:29:43.200,0:29:47.919
and they have a very successful very

0:29:45.919,0:29:52.840
happy productive marriage

0:29:47.919,0:29:54.880
i mean i guess in certain

0:29:52.840,0:29:58.080
instances but still

0:29:54.880,0:29:59.840
kind of the thought of that like yeah i

0:29:58.080,0:30:05.120
get it people can be happy

0:29:59.840,0:30:08.240
but i think there’s probably a point

0:30:05.120,0:30:11.840
where age starts to matter less and less

0:30:08.240,0:30:12.480
i guess and and i think i totally agree

0:30:11.840,0:30:16.159
with you

0:30:12.480,0:30:18.000
from a teen standpoint that i would not

0:30:16.159,0:30:19.919
feel comfortable with you ever dating

0:30:18.000,0:30:21.679
someone who was significantly older than

0:30:19.919,0:30:22.880
you and when i say significantly older

0:30:21.679,0:30:25.279
i’m saying

0:30:22.880,0:30:26.080
maybe five years or more is too much

0:30:25.279,0:30:29.120
yeah

0:30:26.080,0:30:32.240
um but i think once you hit

0:30:29.120,0:30:35.360
adulthood and

0:30:32.240,0:30:36.399
you meet somebody regardless of their

0:30:35.360,0:30:40.320
age if they

0:30:36.399,0:30:43.360
are someone who you can relate to that

0:30:40.320,0:30:45.120
that you fall in love with

0:30:43.360,0:30:47.360
and that you enjoy being around i don’t

0:30:45.120,0:30:50.000
think age should be a limiting factor

0:30:47.360,0:30:52.240
i think what you might find is that if

0:30:50.000,0:30:54.880
that age gap is too great

0:30:52.240,0:30:55.600
the two have very the two individuals

0:30:54.880,0:30:58.640
have

0:30:55.600,0:31:00.720
less in common

0:30:58.640,0:31:03.200
to build a relationship on because as

0:31:00.720,0:31:04.960
that age gap increases

0:31:03.200,0:31:06.960
the difference in personality and

0:31:04.960,0:31:08.159
experience and preferences and all that

0:31:06.960,0:31:11.440
stuff starts to

0:31:08.159,0:31:12.480
to get different and for some people

0:31:11.440,0:31:15.120
that difference

0:31:12.480,0:31:16.640
is exactly what they thrive on because

0:31:15.120,0:31:18.159
they offer each other something that

0:31:16.640,0:31:20.000
they never could have experienced with

0:31:18.159,0:31:23.279
someone their own age

0:31:20.000,0:31:26.720
because you know the the maybe the older

0:31:23.279,0:31:27.360
person in that relationship is feels

0:31:26.720,0:31:28.799
younger

0:31:27.360,0:31:31.760
with that younger person and that

0:31:28.799,0:31:34.159
younger person feels more entitled more

0:31:31.760,0:31:34.799
privileged being with an older person

0:31:34.159,0:31:38.080
who’s more

0:31:34.799,0:31:40.640
established professionally and mature

0:31:38.080,0:31:43.200
wise and attitude-wise so there’s

0:31:40.640,0:31:45.679
there’s trade-offs there but i agree to

0:31:43.200,0:31:47.600
a certain extent that there’s a

0:31:45.679,0:31:49.440
an age where that probably starts

0:31:47.600,0:31:52.720
becoming less of a factor

0:31:49.440,0:31:55.279
uh yeah i guess i can understand that so

0:31:52.720,0:31:55.760
sticking with the whole age thing what

0:31:55.279,0:31:58.080
age

0:31:55.760,0:31:59.039
is appropriate for dating and i’ll say

0:31:58.080,0:32:02.640
that

0:31:59.039,0:32:06.080
with a caveat that we live in new jersey

0:32:02.640,0:32:08.640
and state the state that age varies

0:32:06.080,0:32:12.000
the age of consent and when i say

0:32:08.640,0:32:15.919
consent we’re talking about

0:32:12.000,0:32:19.120
sex yes i know i said that nasty word

0:32:15.919,0:32:21.679
it’s okay so most states it’s either 16

0:32:19.120,0:32:22.480
17 or 18 in new jersey the age of

0:32:21.679,0:32:24.960
consent is

0:32:22.480,0:32:27.200

  1. just because you’re dating someone

0:32:24.960,0:32:30.320
doesn’t mean that that becomes a factor

0:32:27.200,0:32:32.080
but for the purpose of this discussion

0:32:30.320,0:32:34.880
it’s important to know what those legal

0:32:32.080,0:32:38.240
ramifications are

0:32:34.880,0:32:40.960
okay so with that in mind what age is

0:32:38.240,0:32:44.480
appropriate for dating do you think

0:32:40.960,0:32:49.200
so consent aside

0:32:44.480,0:32:50.000
i would think that maybe at 16 would be

0:32:49.200,0:32:52.080
a decent

0:32:50.000,0:32:54.159
time to date of course you don’t have to

0:32:52.080,0:32:58.320
date immediately when you’re 16

0:32:54.159,0:33:01.440
you don’t have to date at all in fact um

0:32:58.320,0:33:04.480
but i would definitely say that

0:33:01.440,0:33:05.360
give yourself time to figure out who you

0:33:04.480,0:33:08.080
want to date

0:33:05.360,0:33:08.399
if you want a date that kind of thing

0:33:08.080,0:33:11.600
and

0:33:08.399,0:33:15.600
if you do want to date i’d say at least

0:33:11.600,0:33:16.000
16 consent i feel should probably be a

0:33:15.600,0:33:19.200
bit

0:33:16.000,0:33:21.519
higher though not gonna lie but

0:33:19.200,0:33:24.320
if you just want to date someone then

0:33:21.519,0:33:26.240
i’d say 16 should be the minimum and i

0:33:24.320,0:33:27.760
would tend to agree with that

0:33:26.240,0:33:29.760
and i would also agree with the

0:33:27.760,0:33:31.519
statement you made that you don’t need

0:33:29.760,0:33:34.080
to

0:33:31.519,0:33:36.000
immediately start dating when you’re 16.

0:33:34.080,0:33:37.440
i didn’t seriously date until i got out

0:33:36.000,0:33:38.159
of high school because i was involved in

0:33:37.440,0:33:40.640
so many different

0:33:38.159,0:33:43.200
things and i was working and you know

0:33:40.640,0:33:45.120
all kinds of personal stuff going on

0:33:43.200,0:33:46.799
you know i dated a little bit but it

0:33:45.120,0:33:49.440
wasn’t anything serious

0:33:46.799,0:33:50.960
i didn’t look to really date until i was

0:33:49.440,0:33:53.360
a little bit more

0:33:50.960,0:33:54.960
established let’s let’s be honest it’s

0:33:53.360,0:33:58.240
it’s expensive dating

0:33:54.960,0:33:59.760
so if you can’t finance that and don’t

0:33:58.240,0:34:01.120
want to depend on your parents then you

0:33:59.760,0:34:03.440
might want to wait before you start

0:34:01.120,0:34:03.440
dating

0:34:03.679,0:34:09.919
uh let’s see question number three

0:34:06.799,0:34:13.119
another age-related one here should

0:34:09.919,0:34:15.280
young couples be able to marry now again

0:34:13.119,0:34:17.839
a caveat with that

0:34:15.280,0:34:20.240
in the united states i don’t know about

0:34:17.839,0:34:22.879
other countries but in the united states

0:34:20.240,0:34:24.800
an individual can marry at the age of 18

0:34:22.879,0:34:27.679
without parental consent or

0:34:24.800,0:34:29.839
authorization younger than that your

0:34:27.679,0:34:33.200
parents have to consent to it

0:34:29.839,0:34:34.720
now i’ll say with that in mind that

0:34:33.200,0:34:36.480
there are people that have been married

0:34:34.720,0:34:37.839
as young as 12 years old

0:34:36.480,0:34:41.200
over the course of history in this

0:34:37.839,0:34:44.960
country so

0:34:41.200,0:34:48.399
should young couples be able to marry i

0:34:44.960,0:34:52.480
mean not very very young

0:34:48.399,0:34:55.119
couples i don’t entirely feel like

0:34:52.480,0:34:55.839
marriage is a big thing and basically

0:34:55.119,0:34:57.599
you’re saying

0:34:55.839,0:34:59.119
okay this is the person i want to spend

0:34:57.599,0:35:01.040
the rest of my life with

0:34:59.119,0:35:03.040
yes it can get a divorce but that’s a

0:35:01.040,0:35:04.480
whole nother can of worms you probably

0:35:03.040,0:35:07.839
don’t want to open

0:35:04.480,0:35:10.560
um so i mean

0:35:07.839,0:35:11.119
i guess as long as they really figure

0:35:10.560,0:35:13.280
out

0:35:11.119,0:35:14.880
like as long as they know what they’re

0:35:13.280,0:35:18.000
in for i guess that

0:35:14.880,0:35:20.960
it would be okay but i would say

0:35:18.000,0:35:23.000
um i would kind of prefer it if the

0:35:20.960,0:35:26.320
youngest age was maybe

0:35:23.000,0:35:27.920
2021 it’s it’s kind of the same thing

0:35:26.320,0:35:31.440
with the military thing we

0:35:27.920,0:35:34.800
talked about in the last um video

0:35:31.440,0:35:36.400
um i don’t entirely feel comfortable

0:35:34.800,0:35:40.160
with like

0:35:36.400,0:35:42.000
older teens marrying because

0:35:40.160,0:35:43.440
like you don’t make the best decisions

0:35:42.000,0:35:44.720
when like you make a lot of life

0:35:43.440,0:35:46.560
decisions at 18

0:35:44.720,0:35:48.560
and i don’t feel as though marriage

0:35:46.560,0:35:51.040
should be one of them

0:35:48.560,0:35:52.400
and i would agree with you there i think

0:35:51.040,0:35:54.880
i think

0:35:52.400,0:35:57.200
depending on the gender dynamic of the

0:35:54.880,0:35:59.119
relationship

0:35:57.200,0:36:01.920
half of that relationship may not be

0:35:59.119,0:36:03.440
mature enough to make that decision

0:36:01.920,0:36:05.440
and there’s a lot of other world

0:36:03.440,0:36:07.280
decisions that have to get made before

0:36:05.440,0:36:09.680
you get to that point

0:36:07.280,0:36:11.760
and not only is dating expensive

0:36:09.680,0:36:13.760
marriage is very expensive

0:36:11.760,0:36:15.680
so if you don’t have the means to

0:36:13.760,0:36:16.960
support yourself and your family you’re

0:36:15.680,0:36:19.359
probably better off

0:36:16.960,0:36:20.640
waiting to get married and waiting to

0:36:19.359,0:36:24.320
start a family until

0:36:20.640,0:36:27.839
you’re a little bit more established

0:36:24.320,0:36:27.839
but that’s just my philosophy

0:36:28.640,0:36:35.680
so is it okay for girls to ask boys

0:36:32.320,0:36:37.760
out sure i don’t see a problem with it

0:36:35.680,0:36:40.320
same thing with girls proposing to guys

0:36:37.760,0:36:42.960
i really don’t see any problem with it

0:36:40.320,0:36:46.240
like girls can make the first move i

0:36:42.960,0:36:48.400
don’t really see a problem with that

0:36:46.240,0:36:50.079
okay well moving right along i mean yeah

0:36:48.400,0:36:51.280
i don’t really know not much discussion

0:36:50.079,0:36:53.040
to happen there

0:36:51.280,0:36:54.320
yeah i don’t really have much else to

0:36:53.040,0:36:56.800
say like i

0:36:54.320,0:36:58.480
i kind of thought that girls would like

0:36:56.800,0:37:00.240
sometimes ask guys out on the

0:36:58.480,0:37:02.240
like on their own so you’re not a

0:37:00.240,0:37:04.480
traditional you know

0:37:02.240,0:37:05.520
romantic person where you expect

0:37:04.480,0:37:08.640
chivalry to be

0:37:05.520,0:37:10.480
still alive and guys to hold doors open

0:37:08.640,0:37:12.720
and pull chairs out for women and stuff

0:37:10.480,0:37:15.200
oh trust me no that

0:37:12.720,0:37:18.320
like that is not equal rights people my

0:37:15.200,0:37:21.040
people might think it’s nice at first

0:37:18.320,0:37:22.480
but then you realize yeah why can’t the

0:37:21.040,0:37:25.359
woman do that

0:37:22.480,0:37:25.920
so you’re more for equal rights and less

0:37:25.359,0:37:29.119
for

0:37:25.920,0:37:31.839
chivalrous conduct yeah pretty much

0:37:29.119,0:37:33.760
okay i think that’s a fair way to go

0:37:31.839,0:37:34.640
through life i think it’s it sets the

0:37:33.760,0:37:38.160
expectations

0:37:34.640,0:37:38.160
much more realistic at that point

0:37:38.240,0:37:44.560
so online dating so according to a study

0:37:42.240,0:37:47.760
published by the pew research center

0:37:44.560,0:37:50.079
roughly 60 percent of participants

0:37:47.760,0:37:51.680
have had positive experiences with

0:37:50.079,0:37:54.240
dating platforms

0:37:51.680,0:37:56.480
now before i ask the question i will put

0:37:54.240,0:37:58.000
the caveat out there

0:37:56.480,0:38:00.000
that your mother and i met through an

0:37:58.000,0:38:03.200
online dating service

0:38:00.000,0:38:04.079
and we are she’s going to hit me if i

0:38:03.200,0:38:07.680
get this wrong

0:38:04.079,0:38:10.720
18 years i want to say into into

0:38:07.680,0:38:12.400
being together now i’m waiting for her

0:38:10.720,0:38:13.520
to bang the door down now to tell me i’m

0:38:12.400,0:38:16.800
wrong

0:38:13.520,0:38:20.160
um so i think it was successful

0:38:16.800,0:38:20.560
for the most part so the question is do

0:38:20.160,0:38:24.160
you

0:38:20.560,0:38:27.839
think online dating sites are effective

0:38:24.160,0:38:29.520
i mean considering like that my parents

0:38:27.839,0:38:30.800
who are having a really successful

0:38:29.520,0:38:32.079
relationship and that we have a

0:38:30.800,0:38:35.119
successful relationship

0:38:32.079,0:38:38.320
as a family i’d say yeah they’re

0:38:35.119,0:38:39.520
pretty effective like especially since

0:38:38.320,0:38:42.000
you can meet

0:38:39.520,0:38:44.240
people that on the internet that you’d

0:38:42.000,0:38:46.560
probably never meet in real life

0:38:44.240,0:38:48.560
um i definitely think that online dating

0:38:46.560,0:38:49.359
can be very effective for plenty of

0:38:48.560,0:38:52.000
people

0:38:49.359,0:38:53.280
okay and obviously i’ll agree with that

0:38:52.000,0:38:58.079
otherwise

0:38:53.280,0:38:58.079
mommy will divorce me um

0:38:58.800,0:39:03.520
is there sufficient relationship

0:39:01.520,0:39:04.880
counseling for teens do you feel that if

0:39:03.520,0:39:07.920
you have

0:39:04.880,0:39:09.920
questions or confusions or

0:39:07.920,0:39:11.440
um just want to have something explained

0:39:09.920,0:39:13.040
to you do you feel that there are

0:39:11.440,0:39:16.160
sufficient resources for you

0:39:13.040,0:39:18.079
either i don’t want to say at home but

0:39:16.160,0:39:20.560
in school for instance do you think

0:39:18.079,0:39:22.079
there’s there’s

0:39:20.560,0:39:24.480
counselors guidance counselors or

0:39:22.079,0:39:27.359
whatever or any kind of resources that

0:39:24.480,0:39:30.320
you can go and ask questions

0:39:27.359,0:39:31.520
i mean i guess maybe with the guidance

0:39:30.320,0:39:34.240
counselors

0:39:31.520,0:39:35.119
i don’t know i’ve never really asked

0:39:34.240,0:39:38.079
them

0:39:35.119,0:39:40.480
about like they never came up that about

0:39:38.079,0:39:42.800
relationship specifically

0:39:40.480,0:39:44.720
um they never really discussed it with

0:39:42.800,0:39:47.280
me it was kind of just

0:39:44.720,0:39:48.000
okay tell me if you’re like tell me

0:39:47.280,0:39:50.880
about

0:39:48.000,0:39:52.160
like just kind of tell me about what you

0:39:50.880,0:39:55.400
like and stuff

0:39:52.160,0:39:56.560
um it never really came up like about

0:39:55.400,0:39:59.760
relationships

0:39:56.560,0:40:01.280
and about how i wanted to have a

0:39:59.760,0:40:03.359
relationship

0:40:01.280,0:40:06.480
i’m guessing if i asked they would

0:40:03.359,0:40:07.680
probably have some answers it’s just

0:40:06.480,0:40:09.680
that kind of thing was never really

0:40:07.680,0:40:11.520
discussed in school with me

0:40:09.680,0:40:12.720
so the jury’s kind of still out on that

0:40:11.520,0:40:16.000
one yeah

0:40:12.720,0:40:18.079
just for the record um mommy did confirm

0:40:16.000,0:40:19.599
first of all she put 2004 up like i’m

0:40:18.079,0:40:20.800
going to be able to do math because math

0:40:19.599,0:40:24.560
is hard

0:40:20.800,0:40:26.800
but she did confirm 17 years last month

0:40:24.560,0:40:29.200
so i was one year off that’s not bad

0:40:26.800,0:40:31.359
that’s not fair

0:40:29.200,0:40:32.640
that’s not to say it feels longer i

0:40:31.359,0:40:33.200
don’t want to say that because i could

0:40:32.640,0:40:34.800
come across

0:40:33.200,0:40:38.079
wrong but 17 years is a pretty

0:40:34.800,0:40:41.599
successful relationship so far

0:40:38.079,0:40:44.560
uh let’s see question seven

0:40:41.599,0:40:46.319
are social events at school a good place

0:40:44.560,0:40:49.119
to take a date

0:40:46.319,0:40:52.640
understanding this question relates to

0:40:49.119,0:40:54.720
non-coveted related conditions

0:40:52.640,0:40:56.240
uh um

0:40:54.720,0:40:59.520
[Music]

0:40:56.240,0:41:02.240
i’m not entirely sure

0:40:59.520,0:41:04.400
once again there was never really like a

0:41:02.240,0:41:06.480
bunch of talk about relationships and

0:41:04.400,0:41:10.240
stuff like i can see a bunch of people

0:41:06.480,0:41:13.520
taking their dates to the prom but

0:41:10.240,0:41:13.520
i don’t know like

0:41:13.599,0:41:16.640
i don’t know how the teachers would

0:41:15.040,0:41:19.440
react i guess

0:41:16.640,0:41:20.640
and since we never really brought up

0:41:19.440,0:41:23.119
that kind of stuff

0:41:20.640,0:41:24.720
i don’t i’m not entirely sure if it

0:41:23.119,0:41:25.520
would have been a good idea like they

0:41:24.720,0:41:28.560
could definitely be

0:41:25.520,0:41:31.280
fun but if i

0:41:28.560,0:41:31.920
personally wanted to date i’d probably

0:41:31.280,0:41:35.040
just

0:41:31.920,0:41:37.920
do something outside of school just the

0:41:35.040,0:41:40.800
reason i put this in here is

0:41:37.920,0:41:42.240
in my youth that was a lot of what your

0:41:40.800,0:41:45.680
socializing was

0:41:42.240,0:41:47.200
dances at school taking your date to the

0:41:45.680,0:41:50.000
football game

0:41:47.200,0:41:50.400
hanging out with your friends a lot of

0:41:50.000,0:41:52.319
what

0:41:50.400,0:41:54.240
dating was for me as a kid was hanging

0:41:52.319,0:41:56.800
out with my friends i

0:41:54.240,0:41:58.880
i might be dating one of them but it was

0:41:56.800,0:42:00.319
mostly hanging out with friends

0:41:58.880,0:42:02.160
so a lot of times it was going to

0:42:00.319,0:42:05.040
concerts at school

0:42:02.160,0:42:06.640
uh going to the school play stuff like

0:42:05.040,0:42:08.400
that they were all

0:42:06.640,0:42:10.400
and it came from a small town too so

0:42:08.400,0:42:13.200
there wasn’t a lot of socializing

0:42:10.400,0:42:14.880
that could be had around town really

0:42:13.200,0:42:16.640
everything revolved around what we did

0:42:14.880,0:42:19.920
at school

0:42:16.640,0:42:23.440
i don’t think schools are are quite that

0:42:19.920,0:42:24.720
center of social society anymore though

0:42:23.440,0:42:27.760
are they

0:42:24.720,0:42:30.960
uh not really um

0:42:27.760,0:42:34.560
like i only like i had a dance in

0:42:30.960,0:42:38.000
um sixth grade and there were

0:42:34.560,0:42:41.040
two dances that you could go to um in

0:42:38.000,0:42:44.720
when i was in seventh grade um

0:42:41.040,0:42:45.520
there are like a few um dances but the

0:42:44.720,0:42:50.160
thing is

0:42:45.520,0:42:52.400
like like i mean we had games and stuff

0:42:50.160,0:42:54.560
but i was the type of person who really

0:42:52.400,0:42:57.440
didn’t go to that kind of stuff like we

0:42:54.560,0:43:01.119
did have social events it’s just

0:42:57.440,0:43:01.920
um i don’t know i just didn’t go to the

0:43:01.119,0:43:04.160
social media

0:43:01.920,0:43:05.520
yeah that’s just my okay nothing wrong

0:43:04.160,0:43:06.640
with that i didn’t go to a lot of myself

0:43:05.520,0:43:09.839
either but

0:43:06.640,0:43:11.920
yeah i had to ask um

0:43:09.839,0:43:14.319
question number eight can you just be

0:43:11.920,0:43:15.119
friends after breaking things off with a

0:43:14.319,0:43:17.760
romantic

0:43:15.119,0:43:19.520
interest the dreaded let’s just be

0:43:17.760,0:43:22.000
friends line

0:43:19.520,0:43:24.240
i mean i think it’s possible especially

0:43:22.000,0:43:27.359
if you two were really good friends

0:43:24.240,0:43:29.040
um before you started dating and then

0:43:27.359,0:43:32.000
you can kind of figure that

0:43:29.040,0:43:33.920
hey maybe it might not work we don’t

0:43:32.000,0:43:34.560
work in a romantic sense but we work in

0:43:33.920,0:43:36.880
a friendship

0:43:34.560,0:43:38.079
sense why don’t we just be friends and

0:43:36.880,0:43:40.800
sure there can be

0:43:38.079,0:43:41.359
instances where it’s a bit awkward but i

0:43:40.800,0:43:43.839
definitely

0:43:41.359,0:43:43.839
would

0:43:44.480,0:43:48.240
but i definitely think people can move

0:43:46.079,0:43:49.760
past that and i’m pretty sure people

0:43:48.240,0:43:52.720
have and they can be

0:43:49.760,0:43:55.040
friends with their ex partners okay so

0:43:52.720,0:43:57.520
here’s another good question

0:43:55.040,0:43:59.119
is it okay to date the ex-partner of

0:43:57.520,0:44:00.960
your friend

0:43:59.119,0:44:03.200
okay there’s a couple things that factor

0:44:00.960,0:44:07.440
into this one

0:44:03.200,0:44:09.119
do you is the ex-partner a good person

0:44:07.440,0:44:10.800
well well we’re not going to get deep

0:44:09.119,0:44:12.960
we’re not doing psychoanalysis

0:44:10.800,0:44:13.839
yeah if your best friend breaks up with

0:44:12.960,0:44:16.400
their friend

0:44:13.839,0:44:17.520
their their significant other is it okay

0:44:16.400,0:44:20.000
for you to date their

0:44:17.520,0:44:20.640
their former significant significant

0:44:20.000,0:44:22.720
other

0:44:20.640,0:44:23.920
i’d say as long as their friend’s okay

0:44:22.720,0:44:26.720
with it

0:44:23.920,0:44:28.560
so you need to ask permission first like

0:44:26.720,0:44:31.599
i think you can have like a well

0:44:28.560,0:44:33.680
talked discussion about it like

0:44:31.599,0:44:36.079
a civilized discussion i definitely

0:44:33.680,0:44:36.960
think it could be possible a lot of

0:44:36.079,0:44:39.520
people probably

0:44:36.960,0:44:40.800
think that oh it’s go it’s just gonna

0:44:39.520,0:44:44.079
end in disaster

0:44:40.800,0:44:45.920
well i think that it that it could also

0:44:44.079,0:44:48.079
not end in disaster so

0:44:45.920,0:44:49.520
okay so there’s a chance that it might

0:44:48.079,0:44:51.359
work yeah

0:44:49.520,0:44:53.599
gosh you got to be tactful with this

0:44:51.359,0:44:54.640
yeah so the last question we have i

0:44:53.599,0:44:56.079
think we’ve

0:44:54.640,0:44:58.960
kind of already answered this but i’ll

0:44:56.079,0:45:02.160
give you a chance to expound on it

0:44:58.960,0:45:03.040
is it okay not to date at all while in

0:45:02.160,0:45:05.760
high school

0:45:03.040,0:45:08.000
of course like a lot of people can be

0:45:05.760,0:45:09.119
too busy for a relationship a lot of

0:45:08.000,0:45:12.319
people

0:45:09.119,0:45:15.119
like can probably um

0:45:12.319,0:45:16.160
not care for being in a relationship and

0:45:15.119,0:45:17.280
there’s a bunch of people who can

0:45:16.160,0:45:19.760
probably just

0:45:17.280,0:45:20.960
be okay with just having friends and not

0:45:19.760,0:45:22.160
really feel as though they need a

0:45:20.960,0:45:25.359
significant other

0:45:22.160,0:45:26.800
okay sounds good that’s it for this

0:45:25.359,0:45:33.839
segment we’ll be right back and we’ll

0:45:26.800,0:45:33.839
finish off with our technology question

0:46:39.760,0:46:43.440
welcome back to insights into teens

0:46:41.839,0:46:46.000
we’re getting team perspectives today

0:46:43.440,0:46:47.520
we’re talking about technology now

0:46:46.000,0:46:49.440
this lightning round we’re up against

0:46:47.520,0:46:51.680
the clock here so we got to run through

0:46:49.440,0:46:55.200
these quickly

0:46:51.680,0:46:57.760
are we too dependent on computers today

0:46:55.200,0:46:58.640
i’m pretty sure yeah we probably have a

0:46:57.760,0:47:02.079
little too much

0:46:58.640,0:47:05.760
dependence on technology at this point

0:47:02.079,0:47:09.040
so yeah the answer is yes okay

0:47:05.760,0:47:10.960
speaking in general terms are parents

0:47:09.040,0:47:13.359
clueless about child predators on the

0:47:10.960,0:47:13.359
internet

0:47:13.680,0:47:17.200
i mean i’m pretty sure lots of parents

0:47:15.440,0:47:18.960
are aware some parents are probably more

0:47:17.200,0:47:21.599
clueless than others because

0:47:18.960,0:47:23.040
one they either don’t care or to they’re

0:47:21.599,0:47:25.440
just clueless

0:47:23.040,0:47:26.880
they don’t entirely have a lot of

0:47:25.440,0:47:28.240
knowledge of that

0:47:26.880,0:47:29.920
but i definitely think that there are

0:47:28.240,0:47:31.359
ways that parents can learn

0:47:29.920,0:47:33.440
about this and make sure that they

0:47:31.359,0:47:36.640
protect their child from child predators

0:47:33.440,0:47:39.359
good point cell phones are

0:47:36.640,0:47:40.880
cell phones dangerous or detrimental to

0:47:39.359,0:47:45.119
teens

0:47:40.880,0:47:47.680
i mean to some teens they could be

0:47:45.119,0:47:48.800
like but to others they can definitely

0:47:47.680,0:47:52.240
be helpful

0:47:48.800,0:47:54.480
like maybe some teens can

0:47:52.240,0:47:56.079
do something on their phone that can

0:47:54.480,0:47:58.640
cause them to have

0:47:56.079,0:48:00.559
it can cause them to be put in danger

0:47:58.640,0:48:03.040
but normally it’s be probably because

0:48:00.559,0:48:05.599
they weren’t mature enough to have it

0:48:03.040,0:48:07.920
um but it can also be beneficial to

0:48:05.599,0:48:10.240
plenty of other teens so

0:48:07.920,0:48:11.599
it can be but i don’t think it’s

0:48:10.240,0:48:15.520
entirely dangerous

0:48:11.599,0:48:18.400
so situational yes okay

0:48:15.520,0:48:19.440
do violent video games cause behavioral

0:48:18.400,0:48:22.000
problems

0:48:19.440,0:48:23.760
i don’t think so i used to play a

0:48:22.000,0:48:24.640
violent video game with you called call

0:48:23.760,0:48:27.040
of duty

0:48:24.640,0:48:28.319
and normally we would um play this game

0:48:27.040,0:48:31.839
whenever i would have

0:48:28.319,0:48:34.559
a bad day and usually playing with you

0:48:31.839,0:48:35.200
making some kind of comedy and shooting

0:48:34.559,0:48:37.760
pixels

0:48:35.200,0:48:38.960
made me happier and i was no longer that

0:48:37.760,0:48:40.720
stressed

0:48:38.960,0:48:42.400
um it didn’t turn me into like a

0:48:40.720,0:48:45.200
bloodthirsty killer

0:48:42.400,0:48:46.640
um that’s good tonight for some reason

0:48:45.200,0:48:49.119
people believe

0:48:46.640,0:48:50.400
but playing that game just kind of let

0:48:49.119,0:48:53.200
me blow up some steam

0:48:50.400,0:48:54.400
and it’s probably better to have a way

0:48:53.200,0:48:57.280
to blow off steam

0:48:54.400,0:48:59.440
instead of bursting around other people

0:48:57.280,0:49:02.720
where you really can get a bit violent

0:48:59.440,0:49:05.119
good point so do you

0:49:02.720,0:49:08.319
think about cyber security before you

0:49:05.119,0:49:13.520
use technology

0:49:08.319,0:49:16.800
not really i kind of just figured that

0:49:13.520,0:49:18.880
like you being the tech guy that you are

0:49:16.800,0:49:21.839
you would kind of make sure

0:49:18.880,0:49:23.839
that you would kind of take care of that

0:49:21.839,0:49:26.160
in a way

0:49:23.839,0:49:28.800
as well that’s my problem i mean as a

0:49:26.160,0:49:30.160
teen myself i really never thought that

0:49:28.800,0:49:33.520
i had to worry

0:49:30.160,0:49:35.520
about that and i never did so

0:49:33.520,0:49:37.280
okay we’re gonna have to have an offline

0:49:35.520,0:49:42.839
discussion about that then

0:49:37.280,0:49:45.280
okay are passwords a poor way to secure

0:49:42.839,0:49:47.599
technology as long as you’re safe for

0:49:45.280,0:49:50.319
the password i don’t think so

0:49:47.599,0:49:52.000
um especially but if you end up leaking

0:49:50.319,0:49:53.599
your password it could definitely be a

0:49:52.000,0:49:55.839
poor way of security so you should

0:49:53.599,0:49:59.040
probably have a backup in case

0:49:55.839,0:50:00.240
like especially if you’re you kind of

0:49:59.040,0:50:02.160
have your past

0:50:00.240,0:50:03.839
you have a way of your password out to

0:50:02.160,0:50:05.440
other people you should have another

0:50:03.839,0:50:07.040
wall of defense

0:50:05.440,0:50:08.559
um but for the most part i’m pretty sure

0:50:07.040,0:50:10.079
as long as you keep your passwords

0:50:08.559,0:50:14.160
hidden from other people

0:50:10.079,0:50:17.920
then i’m pretty sure that’s fine okay

0:50:14.160,0:50:21.040
uh is technology important in schools

0:50:17.920,0:50:23.520
today well today yes

0:50:21.040,0:50:25.599
when we were in school i would say that

0:50:23.520,0:50:28.480
was still pretty important

0:50:25.599,0:50:29.280
we could use technology as a tool for

0:50:28.480,0:50:32.640
learning

0:50:29.280,0:50:36.640
and um being

0:50:32.640,0:50:40.400
in a school that had that use technology

0:50:36.640,0:50:42.000
for learning i don’t entirely think i um

0:50:40.400,0:50:43.520
i don’t know what it would be like if we

0:50:42.000,0:50:45.680
had no type of technology

0:50:43.520,0:50:48.400
so okay yeah i think it’s definitely

0:50:45.680,0:50:51.440
essential right now

0:50:48.400,0:50:54.559
so thinking in broader terms of

0:50:51.440,0:50:58.400
all technology is technology

0:50:54.559,0:51:00.319
a tool a convenience or a burden for you

0:50:58.400,0:51:02.640
well it can definitely be a tool

0:51:00.319,0:51:05.680
especially when it comes to school

0:51:02.640,0:51:06.800
um i use my laptop for school i use a

0:51:05.680,0:51:10.079
calculator and

0:51:06.800,0:51:12.559
for math in case like in case like it’s

0:51:10.079,0:51:16.240
a larger number that i can’t entirely

0:51:12.559,0:51:19.920
um uh you know enough fingers

0:51:16.240,0:51:24.559
yeah yeah i guess we can do with that

0:51:19.920,0:51:27.359
um and uh it can also be a convenience

0:51:24.559,0:51:29.920
for entertainment purposes stress

0:51:27.359,0:51:33.119
relieving purposes that kind of thing

0:51:29.920,0:51:37.040
um and a burden in some

0:51:33.119,0:51:39.680
ways uh um

0:51:37.040,0:51:41.200
like if it doesn’t work properly if i’m

0:51:39.680,0:51:43.359
trying to do something and it just

0:51:41.200,0:51:45.920
frustrates me

0:51:43.359,0:51:46.720
um it’s definitely kind of all of the

0:51:45.920,0:51:50.079
above

0:51:46.720,0:51:53.760
okay good answer well-rounded answer

0:51:50.079,0:51:56.960
is technology a threat to privacy

0:51:53.760,0:51:58.400
more than likely yes because using

0:51:56.960,0:52:01.200
technology

0:51:58.400,0:52:02.480
there’s a lot of your personal data that

0:52:01.200,0:52:05.920
is on the internet

0:52:02.480,0:52:09.200
that everyone can see at this point so

0:52:05.920,0:52:10.240
in a way yes it’s a pretty big threat to

0:52:09.200,0:52:11.920
privacy

0:52:10.240,0:52:15.280
and the last question that we have for

0:52:11.920,0:52:16.079
today is facial recognition in public

0:52:15.280,0:52:18.880
places

0:52:16.079,0:52:20.319
okay could you give me an example of

0:52:18.880,0:52:22.880
where that can be applied

0:52:20.319,0:52:24.960
a great example right now you walk into

0:52:22.880,0:52:26.880
a supermarket walk into walmart and you

0:52:24.960,0:52:28.880
see a big tv screen up there

0:52:26.880,0:52:30.480
and you see it draw little boxes around

0:52:28.880,0:52:32.720
your face as you’re walking around and

0:52:30.480,0:52:35.119
it’s doing facial recognition

0:52:32.720,0:52:36.800
uh you go to an airport and the airports

0:52:35.119,0:52:38.880
all have cameras and the cameras are

0:52:36.800,0:52:41.040
doing facial recognition

0:52:38.880,0:52:42.319
you go to a concert at a at an

0:52:41.040,0:52:44.000
auditorium

0:52:42.319,0:52:47.839
and there’s cameras that do facial

0:52:44.000,0:52:47.839
recognition and they run your facial

0:52:47.920,0:52:52.880
images against the database of known

0:52:51.200,0:52:54.400
criminals or wanted individuals or

0:52:52.880,0:52:57.520
something like that

0:52:54.400,0:53:00.319
and if your face turns up a match

0:52:57.520,0:53:02.079
they wind up pulling you out of line and

0:53:00.319,0:53:04.400
taking you in and you talk to security

0:53:02.079,0:53:06.240
or the police or something like that

0:53:04.400,0:53:07.599
cameras are everywhere today which means

0:53:06.240,0:53:11.200
a facial recognition

0:53:07.599,0:53:14.640
potentially is everywhere today

0:53:11.200,0:53:17.760
ah i definitely think in

0:53:14.640,0:53:19.920
a lot of instances it is kind of okay

0:53:17.760,0:53:23.200
because it is just a way to be

0:53:19.920,0:53:24.800
safe but on the other hand yeah it is

0:53:23.200,0:53:25.599
kind of weird having yourself be

0:53:24.800,0:53:28.319
recorded
